My name is Olga, and my first language is Russian. Growing up in a bilingual household shaped so much of who I am today and inspired the path I have chosen for my future. Learning English was not easy, and there were times when I felt caught between two worlds, one at home where Russian was spoken, and another outside where English was expected. As a child, I often had to act as a translator for my parents, whether it was at school meetings, doctor’s appointments, or other situations where understanding every detail was so important. At times, it felt like an enormous responsibility, especially when I was still learning English myself.
I remember moments when I struggled to find the right words or felt frustrated when I couldn’t express myself as clearly as I wanted. It was intimidating to navigate a new language while also helping my family bridge the gap. But those challenges taught me so much about perseverance and empathy. Over time, I became confident in switching between two languages and learned to see it not as a burden, but as one of my greatest strengths.
Being bilingual has given me a unique perspective on communication and connection. I understand what it feels like to not be understood and how isolating that can be. At the same time, I know how empowering it feels when someone finally hears you, understands you, and validates your voice. This understanding is what led me to pursue a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. After graduation, I plan to become a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and work with children and families who face speech and language challenges. My goal is to help others overcome barriers to communication so they can express themselves confidently and be truly heard.
There are so many benefits to being bilingual. It has allowed me to connect with people from different cultures, support my family and community, and understand the world from multiple perspectives. It has also made me more adaptable and open-minded, qualities that I know will help me as both a student and a future clinician. Every language carries its own culture, traditions, and way of seeing the world, and I feel grateful to have grown up with access to two.
Looking back, the challenges I faced as a bilingual child, the confusion, the frustration, and the responsibility, helped shape my identity and inspired my passion for helping others. I know what it feels like to struggle with communication, and I know how life-changing it can be when someone takes the time to help you find your voice. That is exactly what I hope to do for others through my career.
Being bilingual is not just a skill for me; it is a part of my story, my identity, and my purpose. It has shaped my journey, strengthened my determination, and given me a vision for my future. I am proud of where I come from, grateful for the opportunities my bilingualism has given me, and committed to using my experiences to make a difference in the lives of others.
