Growing up in a Nigerian household has shaped the way I see responsibility, success, and my future. In many Nigerian families, being the firstborn comes with expectations. You are not only expected to do well for yourself, but you are also expected to set an example for everyone coming after you. I grew up understanding that my choices would not only affect me. There was an expectation that I would make my family proud, succeed in school, and eventually become someone my younger siblings could look up to.
Being the firstborn has sometimes felt like carrying a responsibility before I was fully ready for it. There were times when I felt like I could not afford to fail because I knew my family was counting on me. In a typical Nigerian household, education is taken very seriously because it is seen as one of the strongest paths toward a better future. I grew up hearing about the importance of getting a good education, building a stable career, and becoming independent. Those expectations have influenced the way I approach school and my career.
At the same time, my family’s story has taught me that success is not just about making money or having an impressive job. It is about creating opportunities and making the sacrifices of the people who came before you mean something. My family has made sacrifices to give me opportunities they did not always have, and that motivates me to make the most of them.
Moving from Nigeria to the United States also changed the way I see the world. I had to adapt to a new environment, a different school system, and a different culture. That experience taught me that I cannot be afraid of change. It also made me appreciate how many different paths people can take to reach their goals. I learned to become more independent and comfortable figuring things out when I did not have all the answers.
These experiences have influenced my career aspirations. I want to become an electrical engineer because I enjoy understanding how things work and solving problems. But I also have a larger vision for my future. Music has always been an important part of my life, and I eventually want to build a music studio and creative enterprise where young people can learn, create, and showcase their talents.

The most exciting project I have worked on was designing a simple digital logic chip. When I first entered college, I believed determination alone would be enough to help me succeed. I was excited about the opportunities ahead of me and eager to build a better future through education. What I failed to realize was how quickly life could change. As my family's responsibilities increased, I found myself trying to balance school with obligations at home that demanded more and more of my time. I became someone my family relied on, and while I wanted to be there for them, I slowly watched my education move further down my list of priorities.
At first, I convinced myself I could handle everything. I stayed up late trying to finish assignments after taking care of responsibilities at home, but exhaustion eventually caught up with me. Missing one assignment turned into falling behind in a class, and before long I felt overwhelmed.
