I met my best friend in seventh grade. We ended up at the same school and the same church, and before long we were both in the church choir, him on drums, me on piano. We spent countless rehearsals across the room from each other, him keeping time behind me while I found my chords, both of us learning to listen for each other before we ever really talked about anything that mattered. One of the moments I remember most is a teens concert where he sang lead while I played keys behind him. I can still picture it: him nervous backstage, me running through the chord progression one more time to steady both of us, and then the two of us locking eyes right before he stepped up to the mic, a silent "we've got this." When it was over, we looked at each other and just knew. No words needed. That night is one of the epic memories I carry from those years, the two of us on a stage we'd earned together, one note and one beat at a time. Outside of music, we did everything together. Homework, church events, the ordinary daily stuff that doesn't sound like much until you realize it's most of what a friendship actually is. When one of us was struggling, whether it was a hard class, a bad week, or just needing someone to talk to, the other was there. Help wasn't a big gesture between us. It was just what we did, automatically, the way you'd help a sibling. Then college pulled us apart, geographically. I left for one place, he left for another, and the daily version of our friendship ended. For a while I wondered if that meant the friendship itself would fade the way some do, quietly, without anyone deciding it. It hasn't. We call each other now and then, not on any schedule, just when one of us thinks of the other or needs to talk. And every time, no matter how many weeks or months have passed, the conversation picks up like no time passed at all. There's no small talk to wade through. We're just right with each other again, the same way we used to lock eyes before a song, already in sync. That's what makes this friendship matter to me. It's easy to be close to someone when you see them every day, or every rehearsal. It's harder, and more telling, to stay close when you don't. What we have isn't held together by proximity anymore. It's held together by something steadier: years of actually showing up for each other, back when it was easy, that built a trust strong enough to survive when it got harder. I think that's the real test of any relationship. Not whether people show up when it's convenient, but whether the bond holds when the convenience is gone. My best friend and I built our foundation early, one rehearsal, one concert, one favor at a time. Now it just holds. I don't know exactly where either of us will end up. But I know that whenever I call, or whenever he does, we'll be right with each other again, keeping time the same way we always did.

Showing Up Every week, before the teens arrived, I sat down at the church piano and played through the songs alone. When I first started volunteering as the pianist for our teens ministry, I thought my job was to make the music sound good. I learned quickly that my real job was to make the room feel safe. Teenagers can be hard to reach. Some came because their parents made them, and some sat in the back with their arms crossed. But when the music started, something shifted. Shoulders relaxed. Voices, at first hesitant, joined in. I realized that a steady, welcoming sound could give people permission to show up as themselves, and I took that responsibility seriously. I played every week for three years, through exams, busy seasons, and days when I would rather have stayed home. Reliability is a form of care, and I wanted those teens to know someone would always be there. Over time, my role grew. I arrived early to set up and stayed late to help clean up. I started noticing which students seemed quiet or left out, and I made a point of talking to them. Some told me they played instruments or wrote lyrics but had never shared them. I encouraged them to try. One student who had never performed in front of anyone accompanied our closing song on guitar while I played piano, and the whole room cheered. Watching someone realize they belong is the best reward service can offer. I also tried to pass on what I could. I started with a music teacher, then kept learning by watching people and videos, so I know how much learning depends on access and encouragement. When teens asked me to show them chords, I sat with them after service and taught them the basics, the same way people once taught me. Sharing what I know has never felt like giving something away. It feels like it multiplies. This instinct comes from my home. My family taught me that when you have a little, you share it, and it grows. We didn't always have extra, but we always had room for someone else. I never saw that as charity. I saw it as how a community holds together. Now, as a freshman at UC Riverside and a cadet in AFROTC, I'm bringing that mindset into new communities. I joined AFROTC because I do my best work with structure and accountability, and I've found that service is part of that structure. Our detachment volunteers at local food drives and community events, and I sign up whenever my schedule allows. "Service before self" isn't a new idea for me. I learned it at a piano bench, playing for kids who needed a reason to walk through the door. I want to become an electrical engineer in the Air Force, building the systems people rely on without thinking about them. To me, that goal and my church work come from the same place: strengthening the foundation for the people standing on it. Strong communities aren't built by grand gestures. They're built by people who keep showing up, whether to play the first chord, welcome the quiet kid in the back, or stay to help stack the chairs. I plan to keep showing up.

Every Sunday, the smell of frying plantain reached me before my mother's voice did. "Come and help me, o," she'd call, and I knew that meant peeling onions until my eyes stung while the generator hummed outside, standing in for a power company that had forgotten us again. I grew up in a crowded three-bedroom flat that held my parents, two sisters, my grandmother, and for one long year a cousin preparing for his exams. Dinner was a negotiation of elbows and stories. Whenever I complained that something was hard, my father, a civil servant, offered the same proverb: "The river that forgets its source will dry up." I nodded politely and understood nothing. What I understood was responsibility. At nine, I read my grandmother's medicine labels aloud because her eyes had weakened. At twelve, I tutored my sister in math at the kitchen table, using bottle caps as counters. Respect was the language of our home: greet elders first, listen before speaking, disagree without disrespect. Music was the other language. I started piano with a teacher who drilled scales, posture, and patience into me. After that, I kept learning the way many people do now, by watching others play and pausing videos to copy what their hands were doing. At fourteen, my church's band lost its bassist, and I volunteered to fill in with a borrowed bass and one weekend of practice. I was terrible, then less terrible. The bass taught me something the piano hadn't: it rarely gets the spotlight, but without it the song falls apart. It holds everything together, quietly. Beats came next. A friend showed me a free music program on his laptop, and I stayed up too late layering drums, chords, and bass lines, chasing a sound I could hear in my head. I became fascinated by how a tiny shift in timing or frequency could transform a track. Without realizing it, I was learning how signals behave. And when the power cut out mid-session, as it often did, I felt the question I'd felt doing homework by lamplight: why is something so basic so fragile, and who builds the systems that fix it? That question brought me to the University of California, Riverside, where I am now a freshman studying electrical engineering. College has been humbling. Circuits and calculus don't care how hard you worked before, and for the first time I'm surrounded by people as driven as I am. I've learned to show up early, ask questions in office hours, and treat confusion as information rather than failure. I've also learned that I do my best work with structure. I improved fastest at piano when a teacher gave me a plan, and I stalled when left to wander. Freedom is wonderful for creating, but it doesn't build discipline on its own. That is why I joined AFROTC. During my first 6:00 a.m. physical training session, I was tired, cold, and questioning my choices, until the cadet next to me, a stranger an hour earlier, said, "Just get to the next cone." We finished together. Nobody in that line was there to perform. They were there because each person's effort carried the others. I realized that was the kind of accountability I'd been looking for. Now I'm striving to become an electrical engineer in the Air Force. The Air Force builds and maintains the systems others depend on without thinking about them: communications, power, radar, satellites. I want to do engineering that keeps people connected and safe, held to a standard where failure isn't an option. It asks for discipline, integrity, and service before self, values I recognized right away because I grew up inside them. I'm also striving to become a braver speaker and a better leader. Growing up, I held my tongue out of respect. Now I'm learning when to use it, to raise a concern, to lead a team, to make a call under pressure. Playing bass taught me to support the group. I'm learning that sometimes you also have to step forward and take the solo. My father's proverb makes sense to me now. Everything I am flows from that crowded flat, that noisy kitchen, those stubborn generators, and the people who taught me that ambition and gratitude can live in the same heart. I don't plan to forget my source. I plan to build something that keeps the lights on for people who, like my family once did, were waiting in the dark.

Selected Paragraph — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 5 “At every hour devote yourself, as a Roman and a man, to doing what you have in hand with precise and unaffected dignity, and with natural affection, freedom, and justice; and give yourself relief from all other thoughts. And you will give yourself relief, if you do every act of your life as if it were the last, laying aside every careless and idle thought, and every action which is not according to the dictates of reason, and the part which you have received from nature.” Essay Marcus Aurelius’s central argument in this passage is that a meaningful life is built by giving your full attention to the responsibilities directly in front of you and carrying them out with discipline, integrity, and purpose. He is not arguing that a person must accomplish something extraordinary every day. Instead, he suggests that the quality of a person’s life depends on how seriously they approach ordinary responsibilities. To Marcus, character is not something demonstrated only during major moments; it is built through the way a person handles every task, decision, and responsibility. The phrase “at every hour devote yourself” establishes the seriousness of his argument. Marcus does not tell the reader to devote themselves only when they feel motivated. He emphasizes every hour because he understands that discipline cannot depend on emotion. There will always be moments when a person is tired, distracted, frustrated, or uncertain. If our actions depend entirely on how we feel, then our values become inconsistent. Marcus instead argues that we should repeatedly return our attention to what we are supposed to do. This idea becomes especially important when he says to do what is “in your hand.” I understand this as a reminder to focus on what is actually within our control. A person can spend hours worrying about the future, comparing themselves to others, or thinking about circumstances they cannot change. None of that changes the responsibility directly in front of them. Marcus’s point is that our attention is valuable, and wasting it on things outside our control prevents us from doing what we can actually influence. The passage also challenges the idea that success requires constantly thinking about the final result. Marcus tells the reader to focus on the act itself. If a student is studying, the responsibility is to study seriously. If someone is caring for their family, they should give that responsibility genuine attention. If someone is building a career, they should focus on developing the skills required rather than becoming consumed by how quickly they will reach their ultimate goal. His reference to doing each act “as if it were the last” is particularly powerful. I do not think Marcus is telling us to live recklessly or assume that every moment will literally be our final one. Instead, he is asking us to recognize the value of the present moment. If we knew we would never get another opportunity to perform a particular task, we would probably approach it differently. We would be less careless. We would pay closer attention. We would take the responsibility more seriously. This connects directly to his criticism of “careless and idle thought.” Marcus recognizes that distraction is not harmless. When our minds constantly move toward irrelevant concerns, we become less capable of giving our best effort to the things that matter. His argument is therefore partly about attention. What we repeatedly choose to pay attention to eventually shapes who we become. The final part of the passage is also important because Marcus connects personal discipline with “the part which you have received from nature.” He believes that human beings have a responsibility to live according to reason and virtue. For him, being a good person is not simply about achieving personal success. It means fulfilling the responsibilities that come with being a human being: acting fairly, treating others with respect, controlling selfish impulses, and contributing to the larger community. That idea makes the passage more meaningful than a simple lesson about productivity. Marcus is not saying, “Work hard so that you can become successful.” He is saying that the way you perform your responsibilities is itself a reflection of your character. A person who becomes successful through dishonesty has not necessarily lived well. Likewise, someone who performs an ordinary responsibility with integrity may be living according to Marcus’s philosophy. I find this distinction important because it changes the way I think about ambition. It is easy to become focused on a future version of yourself: the career you want, the accomplishments you want, or the person you hope to become. But Marcus argues that the future is built through present actions. Becoming the person you want to be is not one dramatic transformation. It is the result of repeatedly choosing to take the responsibility in front of you seriously. Ultimately, Marcus Aurelius is arguing that we should stop waiting for the perfect circumstances to become the people we want to be. We cannot control everything that happens to us, but we can control how we approach what is immediately in front of us. By giving our attention to the present, acting with reason, and treating even ordinary responsibilities with dignity, we gradually build our character. The underlying meaning of the passage is therefore not simply “work hard.” It is more demanding: live each moment in a way that makes your actions worthy of the person you want to become.

Growing up in a single-parent household has shaped my educational journey by teaching me the value of sacrifice, responsibility, and determination. I have seen firsthand how difficult it can be to provide for a family while also trying to create a better future. Because of this, I have never viewed education as something I am simply entitled to. I see it as an opportunity that I have a responsibility to make the most of. My family’s circumstances have motivated me to take my education seriously. There have been financial challenges and moments when I had to become more independent, but I refused to let those circumstances determine how far I could go. Instead, they became motivation. I pushed myself academically, became involved in leadership and service, and looked for opportunities that would help me grow. Whether I was serving on my school’s Black Student Union board, helping plan events, tutoring other students, or serving through my church, I learned that progress comes from consistently showing up and putting in the work. My educational journey has also required me to adapt to major changes. Moving to the United States during high school meant adjusting to a new environment and educational system while building a future for myself. I had to learn how to navigate unfamiliar situations, advocate for myself, and continue moving forward even when things were difficult. Those experiences strengthened my independence and made me more determined to pursue higher education. Now, as I begin my journey at the University of California, Riverside, I am pursuing Electrical Engineering because I want to develop skills that can be used to solve real problems and create opportunities. I want to build a career that allows me to provide for my family while also making an impact beyond myself. My goal is not simply to earn a degree and find a job. I want to become someone who can use knowledge, resources, and experience to help others reach opportunities that may have once seemed out of reach. Giving back to my community will be an important part of that future. I want to mentor younger students, especially those who come from families facing financial challenges, and encourage them to pursue education even when their circumstances make the path difficult. I also want to support programs that provide students with access to STEM education, mentorship, and career opportunities. As I become established in my career, I hope to give back financially as well, helping create opportunities for students who need additional support. Coming from a single-parent household has shown me that success is rarely achieved alone. It is built on sacrifice, support, and the determination to keep going. I want to honor the sacrifices made for me by turning my education into something bigger than myself. I am determined to succeed, but I am equally determined to make my success useful to the people and communities around me.

To me, integrity means staying true to my values and doing what is right even when no one is watching. It means being honest with myself and others, taking responsibility for my actions, and following through when people depend on me. I believe integrity is not something you simply claim to have; it is something you demonstrate through the choices you make every day. My core values of responsibility, service, and perseverance have played a major role in shaping who I am. One place where I have been able to put these values into practice is through my involvement with my school’s Black Student Union. As a board member, I have helped plan events, communicate information to students, and create opportunities for people to come together. Being part of the board taught me that leadership is not just about having a position. It is about being willing to put in the work behind the scenes and making sure people can rely on you. When we plan an event, there are many small responsibilities that have to be handled correctly, and I have learned to take those responsibilities seriously because I know they affect the experience of other students. My commitment to service also comes from my church. I have served as a music director and pianist, helped with church maintenance, and spent time checking in on younger students. Some of the work I have done is not something that receives much recognition. Whether I am helping prepare for a church program, helping a younger student with something they are struggling with, or working on something that needs to be fixed, I have learned that service is often about doing what needs to be done rather than waiting to be noticed. That mindset has become an important part of how I contribute to the communities I am part of. Perseverance has also become one of my strongest values because of my experience moving to the United States during high school. I had to adjust to a new country, school system, and environment while also trying to figure out where I belonged. There were moments when I felt different or uncertain, but I chose to keep pushing forward. Instead of allowing those challenges to discourage me, I focused on my education, became involved in my school, and looked for ways to help others. These experiences have shown me that integrity is reflected in consistency. It is keeping your word, serving others without expecting recognition, and continuing to do your best when circumstances are difficult. As I move forward in my education and career, I want my accomplishments to be matched by the character behind them. I want people to know that when I commit to something, I will take it seriously and give it my best effort. To me, that is what integrity looks like.

Growing up in a low-income family taught me to appreciate things that others might take for granted. It taught me that opportunities are not guaranteed and that sometimes you have to work harder to reach the same starting line as everyone else. Most importantly, it taught me resilience, gratitude, and responsibility. One of the biggest sacrifices my family made for my future was allowing me to leave Nigeria and come to the United States for high school. I moved here to live with my aunt while my parents remained in Nigeria. Leaving my parents was not easy. I was entering a completely different country, school system, and environment without having my parents there to guide me through it every day. There were moments when I missed them more than I could explain. When something difficult happened at school or I simply wanted to talk to my parents, they were thousands of miles away. But I understood why they made that sacrifice. They gave up being close to me because they believed that giving me access to a better education could give me a better future. That realization changed how I viewed school. Education became more than just getting good grades. Every assignment I completed and every accomplishment I earned reminded me of the people who were sacrificing for me. I wanted my hard work to mean something. I wanted to show my parents that their decision to send me away was worth it. Growing up with limited resources also taught me how to be grateful for what I have. I learned to make the most of what was available to me instead of focusing on what I did not have. It made me resourceful and taught me that setbacks do not have to determine my future. My experiences have also influenced how I treat other people. I know what it feels like to struggle, so I try to help others when I can. As a basketball team manager, I spent time helping my teammates with math, Spanish, and English because I genuinely wanted to see them succeed. I did not do it for recognition. I understood how meaningful it can be when someone chooses to invest their time in you. Today, my goals are bigger than simply creating a successful life for myself. I want to become an Electrical Engineer, serve as an Air Force officer, and eventually use my skills to create opportunities for others. I want my younger siblings to have opportunities that my family had to sacrifice to give me. My family’s financial circumstances have shaped me, but they do not define me. They taught me that success is not only about where you end up, but remembering the people and sacrifices that helped you get there. I carry my parents' sacrifice with me every day, and I want to honor it by making the most of every opportunity I receive and creating opportunities for others in the future.

My interest in Electrical Engineering comes from something I have always enjoyed: understanding how things work and figuring out how to make them work better. A big part of that started at my church. I have spent years playing piano and helping with music, but I also became interested in the equipment behind the music. I helped work with speakers, audio equipment, and wiring, and I began to realize how much electrical systems affect the way a building functions. When something was not working correctly, I wanted to understand why instead of simply working around the problem. That experience changed the way I looked at buildings. I started noticing that a building is more than its walls, rooms, and appearance. Behind everything are electrical systems that provide lighting, power, communication, sound, and other functions that people depend on every day. My experience at church gave me an early connection to that side of construction and made me interested in eventually helping design and improve these systems. As I study Electrical Engineering, I want to bring that curiosity into the construction industry. I am especially interested in electrical systems, automation, energy efficiency, and smart-building technology. I want to help create buildings that are safer, more reliable, and better prepared for the technology people will use in the future. My church experience also taught me that the systems I work on can affect an entire community. When the sound system works properly, everyone in the building can hear and participate. When the lighting, power, or equipment has a problem, it can affect the experience of everyone using the space. That showed me that engineering is not just about wires, circuits, or technology. It is about creating systems that people can depend on. I want to bring that same mindset into my career. My goal is to become an engineer who contributes to the construction of buildings that are efficient, reliable, and designed with the people who use them in mind. Whether it is a church, school, workplace, or another community space, I want my work to help create places where people can learn, work, connect, and grow. This scholarship would help me take an important step toward that goal. As I begin my Electrical Engineering education, the cost of college is one of the challenges I have to manage while trying to stay focused on my studies. This support would reduce some of that financial pressure and allow me to focus more on developing the technical skills I will need for my future career. I am still at the beginning of my journey, but I know where my curiosity started: in my church, looking beyond what people could see and wondering how everything worked behind the walls. I hope to turn that curiosity into a career where I can help design the buildings and electrical systems that communities depend on.

To me, selflessness is being willing to help someone because you genuinely want to see them do well, not because you expect something in return. One of the biggest examples of this for me was when I was a manager for my school’s varsity basketball team. At first, I thought being a team manager mostly meant helping with things around the team, like equipment and practices. But as I got closer to my teammates, I realized that I could help them in other ways too. Some of my teammates were having a hard time keeping up with their schoolwork, and because their grades affected their ability to play, I wanted to help them stay on track. I remember one time sitting with one of my teammates after school while he was working on an assignment he was struggling with. He kept saying that he did not understand the work, and I could tell he was getting frustrated. Instead of just giving him the answers, I went through the problems with him step by step until it finally started to make sense. When he eventually looked at his work and realized he could do it on his own, I remember feeling genuinely happy for him. It was a small moment, but it reminded me why I enjoyed helping people. I also helped other teammates with math, Spanish, and English. Sometimes I would sit down with them and go through an assignment, explain something they did not understand, or help them prepare for a test. There were times when I could have gone home or focused on my own work, but I chose to stay and help because I knew how important their grades were to them. What made it meaningful was that I genuinely wanted to see them succeed. I was not doing it for recognition, and I did not expect anything from them in return. I just wanted to know that I had done something that could make their situation a little easier. Being a team manager taught me that you do not have to be the person scoring points or getting attention to have an impact. Sometimes, helping someone behind the scenes can be just as meaningful. I learned that selflessness can be as simple as giving someone your time, being patient with them, and caring about their success as if it were your own. That experience is something I still carry with me. I want to be the kind of person who notices when someone needs help and is willing to step up. To me, selflessness is not about what I can get from helping someone. It is about knowing that I helped another person move one step closer to where they want to be.

Growing up in a Nigerian household has shaped the way I see responsibility, success, and my future. In many Nigerian families, being the firstborn comes with expectations. You are not only expected to do well for yourself, but you are also expected to set an example for everyone coming after you. I grew up understanding that my choices would not only affect me. There was an expectation that I would make my family proud, succeed in school, and eventually become someone my younger siblings could look up to. Being the firstborn has sometimes felt like carrying a responsibility before I was fully ready for it. There were times when I felt like I could not afford to fail because I knew my family was counting on me. In a typical Nigerian household, education is taken very seriously because it is seen as one of the strongest paths toward a better future. I grew up hearing about the importance of getting a good education, building a stable career, and becoming independent. Those expectations have influenced the way I approach school and my career. At the same time, my family’s story has taught me that success is not just about making money or having an impressive job. It is about creating opportunities and making the sacrifices of the people who came before you mean something. My family has made sacrifices to give me opportunities they did not always have, and that motivates me to make the most of them. Moving from Nigeria to the United States also changed the way I see the world. I had to adapt to a new environment, a different school system, and a different culture. That experience taught me that I cannot be afraid of change. It also made me appreciate how many different paths people can take to reach their goals. I learned to become more independent and comfortable figuring things out when I did not have all the answers. These experiences have influenced my career aspirations. I want to become an electrical engineer because I enjoy understanding how things work and solving problems. But I also have a larger vision for my future. Music has always been an important part of my life, and I eventually want to build a music studio and creative enterprise where young people can learn, create, and showcase their talents. Being the firstborn has taught me to think beyond myself. I want my career to give me stability and allow me to support my family, but I also want to use what I build to help others. I want the younger people in my family and community to see that they can create their own path, even when expectations are high. My family has taught me to work hard and carry responsibility, but it has also taught me why that work matters. I do not want to succeed just so I can say I succeeded. I want to succeed so I can open doors for the people who come after me.

When I think about what I want to build, I do not just think about buildings, machines, or businesses. I think about building a place where people can discover what they are capable of. I want to become an electrical engineer, but I also have another dream that is just as important to me: building my own music studio and creative enterprise. I want it to be a place where people can come to learn music, create without being judged, and have their talents heard. Music has been a huge part of my life. I started playing piano when I was young, and over time, music became more than just something I did for fun. I began producing beats, playing for others, and teaching music. Every time I make something from scratch, there is something exciting about taking an idea that only existed in my head and turning it into something other people can hear. That feeling is something I want to give to other people. I know that not everyone has access to instruments, recording equipment, lessons, or someone who believes in their creativity. I want to help change that. My studio would not just be a place to record songs. I want it to be a place where someone can learn piano or music production, work with other artists, perform their work, or simply walk in with an idea and have the tools to bring it to life. Becoming an electrical engineer is part of how I plan to make this dream possible. Engineering will teach me how to solve problems, understand technology, and build things that actually work. I also want to use what I learn to better understand the technology behind music production and eventually help build the studio I imagine. I know this dream will take time. I will have to learn, make mistakes, work hard, and probably change my plans along the way. But that does not discourage me. It motivates me. I want to build something that gives people the same feeling music has given me: the feeling that their ideas matter and that they have something worth sharing. If I can create a place that helps even one person find their voice, then I will know I built something meaningful.

Growing up, I learned that change can either hold you back or push you to become stronger. I spent most of my secondary education in Nigeria before moving to the United States during high school. Adjusting to a new country, a different education system, and a new culture was difficult. At first, I was nervous to speak in class because I worried people would judge my accent. Even when I knew the answer, I sometimes stayed quiet. Over time, I realized that confidence comes from being willing to step outside your comfort zone. Those experiences taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of believing in myself. Since then, I have worked hard to make the most of every opportunity. I challenged myself academically, earned a 4.1 GPA, and took rigorous courses like AP Calculus. Outside the classroom, I looked for ways to serve my school and community. As the Secretary of my school's Black Student Union and Vice President of the Chess Club, I learned how to communicate with different people, organize events, and support those around me. I also serve as the lead pianist and teenage music director at my church, where I mentor younger musicians and help lead rehearsals. These experiences showed me that leadership is not about having a title but about helping others grow. My passion for electrical engineering comes from my curiosity about how technology works and my desire to solve real-world problems. I enjoy learning how systems are designed and finding creative ways to improve them. Engineering combines analytical thinking with creativity, and I am excited by the idea of designing technology that can make people's lives better. My goal is to become an electrical engineer and commission as an officer in the United States Air Force, where I can use my technical skills to contribute to meaningful projects while continuing to develop as a leader. Music has also shaped who I am. Producing beats and playing piano have taught me patience, discipline, and persistence. Creating music is similar to engineering because both require problem-solving, creativity, and attention to detail. Every mistake becomes an opportunity to learn and improve. In the future, I hope to start a music business where I can teach piano, music production, and other instruments to young people. I want to create opportunities for students who may not have access to quality music education and inspire them to pursue their passions. Earning a degree in electrical engineering will provide me with the technical knowledge and hands-on experience needed to achieve these goals. It will prepare me to solve complex engineering challenges, contribute to technological innovation, and serve my country through the Air Force. At the same time, it will give me the foundation to build my own business and mentor the next generation of musicians. I believe education is most meaningful when it is used to help others. My goal is not only to build a successful career but also to use what I learn to create opportunities for my community. Whether I am designing new technology, serving in the military, or teaching music, I want to make a lasting impact. The challenges I have overcome have strengthened my determination, and they continue to motivate me to work hard, lead with humility, and give back whenever I can.

As a student from a low-income household, I understand that borrowing for college is a serious financial responsibility. My goal is not simply to repay student loans after graduation but to minimize the amount I borrow in the first place through careful planning and responsible financial decisions. I believe that every dollar I can earn through scholarships, grants, internships, or work is one less dollar I will have to repay with interest. Because of this mindset, I have actively searched for scholarship opportunities and continue applying for financial aid to reduce the overall cost of my education. Receiving scholarship support would allow me to spend more time focusing on my studies and professional development instead of worrying about financial stress. One of the most important parts of my plan is pursuing Air Force ROTC while earning my Electrical Engineering degree. My long-term goal is to commission as an officer in the United States Air Force after graduation. In addition to allowing me to serve my country, this career path provides a stable salary, valuable benefits, and opportunities for career advancement that will help me meet my financial responsibilities. If I qualify for ROTC scholarships or educational assistance, those resources will further reduce the amount I need to borrow. Even if I still graduate with student loan debt, beginning my career as an Air Force officer will provide the financial stability needed to make consistent loan payments while continuing to build savings for the future. During college, I also plan to gain practical experience through paid engineering internships and research opportunities. These experiences will strengthen my resume while providing income that can be used toward tuition, books, housing, and other educational expenses. Outside of engineering, I plan to continue teaching piano lessons, producing music, and creating educational content online. Music has been an important part of my life, and turning my skills into an additional source of income will help reduce my reliance on loans while allowing me to continue serving my community through music education. Any earnings I receive during college will first be used to reduce educational expenses before considering unnecessary personal spending. If I graduate with student loans, I intend to follow a disciplined repayment strategy. I will create a monthly budget that prioritizes loan payments, housing, transportation, savings, and other essential expenses before discretionary purchases. Whenever my income allows, I plan to pay more than the required minimum payment to reduce interest costs and shorten the repayment period. I also intend to build an emergency fund so unexpected expenses do not force me to rely on additional debt. Living within my means will remain a priority even after I begin my engineering career because financial discipline is essential for achieving long-term stability. Ultimately, I view my education as an investment that will create opportunities for lifelong success. My degree in Electrical Engineering, combined with military leadership experience and my long-term goal of building a music education business, will provide multiple sources of income and financial security. Rather than relying on one solution, I have developed a comprehensive plan that includes scholarships, financial aid, ROTC opportunities, internship earnings, music instruction, careful budgeting, and responsible repayment. By remaining disciplined and committed to my goals, I am confident that I can successfully manage any student loan debt while building a career dedicated to engineering, service, and giving back to my community.

My long-term goal is to become an Electrical Engineer, earn a commission as an officer in the United States Air Force, and eventually establish a music education business that teaches young people piano, music production, and other musical skills while encouraging creativity and self-expression. Although these goals are ambitious, they complement one another. Engineering will allow me to solve technical problems and contribute to national defense, the Air Force will strengthen my leadership and technical abilities while allowing me to serve my country, and my music business will provide a way to give back to my community by mentoring the next generation. My first step is to earn a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Riverside. During college, I plan to maintain a strong GPA, participate in engineering projects, and complete internships that provide practical experience in electronics, semiconductor design, and electrical systems. I also plan to participate in Air Force ROTC to develop leadership skills and compete for a commission upon graduation. These experiences will prepare me both academically and professionally while helping reduce educational expenses through scholarships and, if awarded, ROTC financial assistance. The resources necessary to achieve these goals include tuition, textbooks, engineering software, a reliable laptop, transportation, and living expenses during college. I estimate annual educational costs, after financial aid, at approximately $8,000-$12,000 for remaining tuition and fees, books, supplies, and personal expenses. I also expect to budget approximately $1,500 annually for engineering materials, software, and professional development opportunities such as conferences or certifications. To cover these costs, I plan to combine scholarships, grants, savings, part-time work, and any educational benefits available through Air Force ROTC. Careful financial planning will allow me to focus on my education without accumulating unnecessary debt. After earning my degree, I plan to commission as an Air Force officer and serve as an Electrical Engineer. This career will provide advanced technical training, leadership experience, financial stability, and opportunities to work on projects that have a meaningful impact. During my military service, I also intend to continue developing my musical abilities by producing music, teaching piano lessons, and building an online audience through educational content. By growing my reputation gradually instead of waiting until after my service, I can create a strong foundation for my future business. My long-term vision is to open a music education business that offers affordable lessons in piano, music production, songwriting, and music technology for young people, particularly those from underserved communities. I plan to invest in digital pianos, recording equipment, computers, studio software, and a dedicated teaching space. My initial startup budget is approximately $15,000-$25,000, which would cover instruments, recording equipment, furniture, marketing, business registration, insurance, and website development. I also hope to use online platforms to reach students beyond my local community, making lessons accessible through virtual instruction and educational videos. I understand that plans do not always unfold exactly as expected, so I have considered alternative paths. If I am not immediately selected for an Air Force commission, I will pursue engineering employment while continuing to strengthen my qualifications and reapply. If my music business grows more slowly than expected, I will continue teaching privately, creating online content, and reinvesting profits until it becomes self-sustaining. No matter which path I take, my goals remain the same: to use engineering to solve meaningful problems, to serve my country with integrity, and to inspire young people through music. By combining technical expertise, military leadership, and a passion for creativity, I hope to build a career that allows me to make a lasting impact on both my community and the world.

One of the books that has had the greatest impact on my personal growth is "The 48 Laws of Power" by Robert Greene. While the book is often associated with strategy and influence, what stood out to me most was not the pursuit of power itself, but the importance of discipline, self-awareness, and intentional decision-making. Reading it challenged me to think beyond immediate results and instead focus on developing habits, emotional control, and long-term planning. It taught me that success is rarely accidental. It is built through preparation, patience, and the ability to learn from both achievements and mistakes. These lessons have shaped the way I approach school, leadership, and my future career. One of the biggest lessons I took from the book is that discipline is more valuable than talent alone. Talent can create opportunities, but discipline determines whether those opportunities lead to meaningful success. I began applying this mindset to every area of my life. In school, I committed myself to maintaining a strong academic record by staying organized and consistent, even when assignments became challenging. Rather than waiting until the last minute, I learned to plan ahead and remain focused on my long-term goals. This approach has helped me become a more dependable student and leader while strengthening my confidence in my ability to overcome obstacles. The book also reinforced the importance of continuous self-improvement. It encouraged me to evaluate my strengths and weaknesses honestly instead of becoming comfortable with where I was. As a result, I challenged myself to grow both academically and personally. I pursued leadership opportunities, continued developing my passion for music, and explored engineering through projects that expanded my technical knowledge. Each new experience reminded me that growth requires stepping outside of my comfort zone. Instead of fearing failure, I began to see it as an opportunity to improve and become more prepared for future challenges. These lessons have directly influenced my career goals. I plan to study Electrical Engineering because I enjoy solving complex problems and creating technologies that can improve people's lives. Engineering demands persistence, attention to detail, and a willingness to keep learning—qualities that I have worked to develop through the mindset I gained from reading. Whether I am working on a semiconductor design, studying difficult concepts, or collaborating with others, I understand that long-term success comes from consistent effort rather than short-term recognition. My goal is not only to build a successful career but also to become someone whose work positively impacts society through innovation and service. Beyond my own success, I hope to use these lessons to encourage others who are pursuing ambitious goals. Many students face setbacks that make them question their abilities, especially those from challenging financial or personal circumstances. I want to demonstrate that discipline, perseverance, and a commitment to self-improvement can create opportunities that may initially seem out of reach. Reading "The 48 Laws of Power" helped me realize that while circumstances may influence our starting point, our daily choices shape where we ultimately end up. By continuing to learn, improve, and work toward meaningful goals, I hope to make a lasting impact in engineering while inspiring others to believe that success is earned through consistent effort, resilience, and a lifelong commitment to growth.

Growing up in a low-income household taught me resilience long before I fully understood its meaning. Financial limitations meant that I could not take every opportunity for granted, so I learned to work hard, stay disciplined, and make the most of every resource available to me. Rather than allowing my circumstances to define my future, I used them as motivation to pursue academic excellence and develop skills that could create a better life for myself and my family. Despite financial challenges, I remained committed to my goals by maintaining a strong academic record, taking on leadership roles, and pursuing my passion for engineering and technology. I served as Secretary of my school's Black Student Union and Vice President of the Chess Club while also dedicating time to music and engineering projects. These experiences taught me perseverance, time management, and the importance of serving others. Every achievement reminded me that success comes from consistency, not circumstance. My experiences have inspired me to use education and technology to create opportunities for others. As I pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering, I hope to develop innovative technologies that improve lives while mentoring students from low-income backgrounds who may doubt their potential. I want to show them that financial hardship does not determine their future. By giving back to my community, advocating for educational opportunities, and using my skills to solve meaningful problems, I hope to create lasting change and inspire others to believe that perseverance can overcome even the most difficult obstacles.

Women's empowerment is about ensuring that every woman has the opportunity, confidence, and support to pursue her goals without being limited by stereotypes or unequal treatment. I believe that creating this kind of environment begins with everyday actions, especially from leaders who are willing to speak up for fairness and inclusion. Throughout my leadership and volunteer experiences, I have worked to advocate for positive change by encouraging respect, equal opportunities, and meaningful conversations about the importance of empowering women. While I may not have led a large-scale campaign, I have learned that consistent advocacy and intentional leadership can influence how people think and treat one another. My goal has always been to create spaces where women feel heard, valued, and encouraged to reach their full potential. As a student leader, I understood that leadership is not only about organizing events or making decisions but also about representing the interests of everyone in the community. I made a conscious effort to advocate for fairness by encouraging open dialogue and ensuring that different perspectives, including those of women, were acknowledged and respected. During meetings, group projects, and school activities, I promoted an environment where everyone felt comfortable contributing ideas. I believe that many barriers women face are reinforced when their voices are overlooked, so I intentionally encouraged participation and emphasized that strong leadership comes from diverse perspectives. These experiences taught me that empowering others often starts with listening, treating people with respect, and creating opportunities for them to succeed. The greatest impact of my efforts has been raising awareness among my peers. Advocacy is not always measured by large numbers or public recognition; sometimes it is reflected in the conversations that change perspectives and encourage people to think differently. By consistently promoting inclusion and equality, I helped foster discussions about why women's voices matter in leadership, education, and professional settings. These conversations encouraged classmates to become more mindful of how they collaborated with others and reinforced the importance of treating everyone as equals. I realized that awareness is the foundation of lasting change because people cannot challenge inequality until they recognize it. Through my actions and leadership, I sought to inspire others to become allies who actively support women in achieving their goals. Looking ahead, I plan to continue advocating for women's empowerment throughout my education and future career in engineering. As someone pursuing a STEM field where women have historically been underrepresented, I want to contribute to building a more inclusive environment that encourages women to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. I hope to mentor younger students, support organizations that promote women in STEM, and use my leadership skills to create opportunities for women to develop confidence in their abilities. I believe that true empowerment is achieved when people use their influence to remove barriers, amplify voices, and create opportunities for others to succeed. By continuing to advocate for equality and inclusion, I hope to contribute to a future where women are recognized not for overcoming unnecessary obstacles but for their talents, leadership, and achievements.

The most exciting project I have worked on was designing a simple digital logic chip. What began as a curiosity about how tiny pieces of silicon could power everything from smartphones to satellites quickly became an experience that changed the way I viewed technology. Before working on the project, I had always appreciated technology as a user. Afterward, I began appreciating the engineering behind it. At first, I underestimated how much planning went into designing even the simplest chip. Every decision mattered. A small mistake in the logic could affect the entire design, forcing me to go back, analyze the problem, and rethink my approach. There were moments when I spent hours trying to understand why my design was not behaving the way I expected. Those setbacks were frustrating, but they also became my favorite part of the process because every problem I solved taught me something new. What fascinated me most was realizing that a chip is essentially millions or even billions of tiny decisions working together. The same logical thinking used to build a simple circuit scales into the processors that power computers, medical devices, autonomous vehicles, and communication systems around the world. It made me appreciate how much innovation begins with mastering the fundamentals. The project also changed the way I approach challenges. Instead of becoming discouraged when something did not work, I learned to slow down, test one part of the design at a time, and think critically about what the circuit was actually doing. Engineering taught me that failure is rarely the end of a project—it is simply information that helps guide the next improvement. That mindset has stayed with me in every area of my life. Working on this project confirmed that Electrical Engineering is the field where I belong. I enjoy solving problems that require both creativity and analytical thinking. There is something incredibly rewarding about taking an abstract idea, turning it into a working design, and watching it perform exactly as intended. Every challenge became an opportunity to learn rather than a reason to give up. Technology inspires me because it has the power to improve lives in ways most people never notice. The devices we rely on every day are the result of countless engineers who spent years solving problems that most of us never see. I want to become one of those engineers. Whether I am designing integrated circuits, improving communication systems, or developing more efficient electronic devices, I want my work to make technology faster, smarter, and more accessible. As a first-generation college student, pursuing engineering means more than earning a degree. It represents the opportunity to create a better future for my family while contributing to innovations that benefit society. I know the road ahead will be challenging, but my experience designing a chip reminded me why I chose this path in the first place. Every obstacle I overcame made me more curious, more determined, and more excited about what is possible. That project did more than teach me how digital circuits work. It showed me the kind of engineer I want to become—someone who embraces difficult problems, keeps learning, and uses technology to make a meaningful difference in the world.

Growing up, I learned that opportunity is never guaranteed. My family has always worked hard, but financial limitations meant that every major decision had to be made carefully. Higher education was never something I took for granted. Instead, it became something I knew I would have to fight for. As a first-generation college student, I entered this journey without a roadmap. There was no one at home who could explain financial aid, college applications, or what to expect after high school. I had to learn many of these things on my own by asking questions, researching, and seeking guidance from teachers, counselors, and mentors. While the process was often overwhelming, it taught me independence and perseverance. Every obstacle reminded me that earning a college degree would not only change my life—it would change the future of my family. This fall, I will be pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Riverside. Ever since I was young, I have been fascinated by how technology works and how engineers solve problems that improve everyday life. I want to build a career designing innovative electrical systems and technologies that make communities more connected, efficient, and sustainable. Whether that means working on renewable energy, communication systems, or emerging technologies, I hope to use engineering to create solutions that have a meaningful impact on society. Beyond my career, I want to give back to the communities that helped shape me. As someone who understands how intimidating the college process can be, I hope to mentor first-generation and low-income students who may doubt whether higher education is possible for them. Sometimes all it takes is one person saying, "You belong here," to completely change someone's future. I want to be that person for others. Receiving this scholarship would ease the financial burden of pursuing my education. Tuition is only one part of the cost of college. Books, transportation, housing, supplies, and other expenses quickly add up, creating stress that can distract students from their studies. This scholarship would allow me to focus more of my time and energy on learning, participating in campus opportunities, and growing into the engineer I aspire to become instead of constantly worrying about finances. More importantly, this scholarship would be an investment in someone who is determined to make the most of every opportunity. I have worked hard to reach this point, and I know that earning a college degree is only the beginning. My long-term goal is to build a career that allows me to support my family, contribute meaningful innovations through engineering, and inspire other students from backgrounds like mine to believe that their circumstances do not define their future. Education has the power to open doors that once seemed impossible to reach. With the support of this scholarship, I will be one step closer to walking through those doors and creating opportunities not only for myself, but for those who come after me.

When I first entered college, I believed determination alone would be enough to help me succeed. I was excited about the opportunities ahead of me and eager to build a better future through education. What I failed to realize was how quickly life could change. As my family's responsibilities increased, I found myself trying to balance school with obligations at home that demanded more and more of my time. I became someone my family relied on, and while I wanted to be there for them, I slowly watched my education move further down my list of priorities. At first, I convinced myself I could handle everything. I stayed up late trying to finish assignments after taking care of responsibilities at home, but exhaustion eventually caught up with me. Missing one assignment turned into falling behind in a class, and before long I felt overwhelmed. Instead of asking professors for help or using the academic resources available to me, I kept telling myself I would catch up the following week. That week never came. My grades suffered, and eventually I had to face the difficult reality that I was not performing anywhere close to my potential. For a long time, I was disappointed in myself. I questioned whether I was capable of succeeding in college. Looking back now, I realize my biggest mistake was not struggling—it was believing I had to struggle alone. I had not yet developed the time management, communication skills, and discipline needed to balance competing responsibilities. More importantly, I had not learned that asking for help is a sign of maturity, not weakness. The time away from school gave me the opportunity to reflect on what I truly wanted for my future. I realized that earning a degree is about much more than receiving a diploma. It represents stability, opportunity, and the chance to create a better life for myself and my family. That realization completely changed my perspective. I no longer view college as something I simply need to complete. I see it as a privilege that deserves my full commitment every single day. I am returning with a much stronger sense of purpose. My goal is to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering because I have always been fascinated by how technology can solve everyday problems and improve people's lives. I want to build a career designing systems that make communities more connected, efficient, and innovative. Engineering combines creativity with analytical thinking, and I am excited by the opportunity to contribute to solutions that have a lasting impact. This time, I have a clear plan for success. I understand how important it is to stay organized, manage my time intentionally, and ask for support before small challenges become major obstacles. I will create weekly study schedules, attend office hours regularly, use tutoring services whenever necessary, and surround myself with classmates who encourage accountability. These habits may seem simple, but they are the foundation of long-term academic success, and they are habits I now take seriously. More than anything, I have gained perspective. My previous academic struggles do not define who I am; they have shaped who I am becoming. They taught me resilience, humility, and perseverance in ways success alone never could. Today, I am more disciplined, more focused, and more grateful for the opportunity to continue my education than I have ever been before. A second chance is not something I take for granted. It is an opportunity to prove that growth is possible, that setbacks can become stepping stones, and that one difficult chapter does not determine the rest of a person's story. If given this opportunity, I will approach every class, every assignment, and every challenge with the maturity and determination I have developed through experience. I am ready to succeed—not because life will be easier this time, but because I am stronger, wiser, and fully committed to making the most of this second chance.

Growing up, I was always curious about how things worked. If a piece of technology stopped working, I wanted to understand why instead of simply replacing it. That curiosity followed me into music, where I spent hours experimenting with recording equipment, troubleshooting audio problems, and learning how different pieces of technology worked together. I eventually realized that what excited me most was not just using technology but understanding how it was designed. That realization led me to pursue a degree in electrical engineering. What draws me to STEM is the opportunity to solve problems that have a real impact on people's lives. Every day we rely on technology that someone imagined, designed, and built. Whether it is medical equipment that saves lives, communication systems that connect families across the world, or electronics that help students learn, engineering has the power to improve the way people live. I want to be part of creating those solutions. My journey has also shaped the kind of engineer I hope to become. Moving from Nigeria to the United States meant adapting to a new culture, a different education system, and an unfamiliar environment. There were moments when I questioned whether I belonged, especially in classrooms where I was one of the few Black students. Over time, I realized that my background was not something to overcome. It was something that gave me a unique perspective. It taught me resilience, adaptability, and the ability to approach problems from different angles. As a person of color, I hope my impact in STEM goes beyond the products I design. Representation matters because it helps young people believe that they belong in spaces they may have never imagined for themselves. I want students who share a similar background to see someone who looks like them leading engineering projects, starting a technology company, and creating innovative solutions. Sometimes seeing what is possible is the first step toward believing it is possible. I also want to create opportunities that I wish more students had access to. My long term goal is to start a technology company that develops affordable electronic products while investing in engineering education for underserved communities. I hope to provide mentorship, internships, and hands on learning experiences that encourage students to explore STEM with confidence. Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. I want to help close that gap. To me, success in STEM is not only measured by the technologies I create. It is measured by the people I inspire, the doors I help open, and the opportunities I create for those who come after me. If my work can improve lives while encouraging more young people of color to pursue careers in engineering, then I will know I have made the impact I set out to make.

When people ask me why I love math, they usually expect me to say it's because I'm good at it. The truth is, I love math because it has changed the way I think. I enjoy the moment when a problem that seems impossible suddenly starts to make sense. It does not always happen quickly. Sometimes I spend a long time trying different approaches before everything clicks. That process has taught me patience and persistence. I've learned that getting stuck is not a sign to give up. It's an invitation to think differently. What surprises me is how often I use math outside the classroom. When I'm troubleshooting music equipment at church or recording bass guitar, I naturally approach problems the same way I solve math questions. I break the problem into smaller pieces, test different possibilities, and keep asking, "What am I missing?" Math has trained my mind to stay calm instead of frustrated when something doesn't work. One experience I still remember was helping a classmate prepare for a math test. He kept saying he "just wasn't a math person." Instead of showing him formulas to memorize, I explained the problem the way I saw it. When he finally understood it, he smiled and said, "Why didn't anyone explain it like that before?" That moment reminded me that math isn't about being naturally gifted. It's about learning how to think. My love for math is also one of the reasons I want to study electrical engineering. Every piece of technology we rely on, from smartphones to medical devices, began as someone solving a mathematical problem. I want to use that same problem solving mindset to create technology that improves people's lives and makes innovation more accessible. Math has taught me much more than how to solve equations. It has taught me to stay curious, embrace challenges, and keep searching for answers even when they are not obvious. Those lessons have shaped who I am, and I know they will continue to guide me long after I leave the classroom.

The loudest cry for help is not always spoken. I learned that during a jazz band rehearsal at school. One of the students who usually joked with everyone sat unusually quiet, barely touched his instrument, and seemed frustrated every time he made a mistake. Most people assumed he was simply having a bad day, but I recognized something different. Earlier that week, I had noticed he had been eating lunch alone and leaving class as soon as the bell rang. Nothing dramatic had happened. He was simply carrying more than anyone realized. Instead of pretending not to notice, I sat with him after rehearsal while we packed up our instruments. We talked about music at first, then school, and eventually he admitted that he had been overwhelmed by balancing classes, family responsibilities, and the pressure he placed on himself to succeed. He told me he felt like he could not let anyone see him struggle because everyone expected him to have everything together. That conversation changed the way I think about mental health. As students, we spend so much time talking about grades, college applications, and achievements that we sometimes forget there is a person behind every transcript. Many students become experts at hiding stress because they believe asking for help is a sign of weakness. I have learned that one genuine conversation can make someone feel seen, even if it does not solve every problem. Since then, I have tried to be more intentional about checking in with the people around me. Whether it is a friend from church, a classmate preparing for exams, or another musician before a performance, I make an effort to ask questions that go beyond "How are you?" I have found that people are much more willing to open up when they know someone is willing to listen without judgment or immediately trying to fix everything. Music has also become one of the ways I support mental well being in my community. Playing the piano and bass guitar at church has shown me how music can create moments of peace during difficult seasons. I have watched people walk into a service carrying stress and leave feeling lighter because, for a little while, they were reminded that they were not alone. That experience has taught me that supporting mental health is not always about having the perfect advice. Sometimes it is about creating an environment where people can breathe, reflect, and feel encouraged. Mental health is important to me because I know that success means very little if we sacrifice our well being to achieve it. As I continue my education and eventually pursue a career in electrical engineering, I want to carry this perspective with me. Whether I am leading a team or building a company, I want to create a culture where people feel comfortable asking for help, taking care of themselves, and supporting one another. I cannot remove every burden that someone carries, but I can make sure they never have to carry it believing that no one notices. Sometimes the most meaningful form of advocacy begins with something as simple as choosing to sit beside someone who looks like they are doing fine and asking if they really are.

Looking back on my life, I can clearly see God's hand guiding me long before I recognized it myself. Leaving Nigeria to continue my education in the United States meant saying goodbye to my parents, siblings, friends, and everything familiar. I did not know what my future would look like, but I knew one thing. God had not brought me this far to leave me on my own. During one of the biggest transitions of my life, my faith became my greatest source of peace and strength. One verse that has carried me through many moments of uncertainty is Proverbs 3:5 and 6, which says,"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight." There were many times when I did not understand why I had to leave my family or why adapting to a new country felt so difficult. I struggled with a different education system, a new culture, and the fear of speaking because of my accent. Instead of allowing those fears to control me, I learned to trust that God was directing my path even when I could not see the destination. My faith has also taught me that success is not just about personal achievement. It is about using the gifts God has given me to serve others. 1 Peter 4:10 says, "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace."That verse has shaped the way I approach my life. Whether I am serving as a pianist and bass guitarist at church, helping solve technical problems during rehearsals, or encouraging younger musicians, I see every opportunity as a chance to use my abilities to bless someone else. As I pursue a degree in electrical engineering, I want my faith to remain the foundation of everything I build. Engineering gives people the ability to create technologies that can improve lives, but faith reminds me that knowledge without character has little value. Colossians 3:23 teaches, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." That verse reminds me to pursue excellence not for recognition or financial success, but because my work is ultimately an act of worship. My long term goal is to start a technology company that develops affordable electronic products for students, musicians, and underserved communities. I want to create opportunities for people who have the talent to succeed but lack access to the tools they need. I also hope to establish mentorship programs and provide resources for young people who dream of becoming engineers. I believe God blesses us not simply to increase our own lives but to become a blessing to others. Faith has never promised me a life without challenges, but it has given me confidence that I never face them alone. Philippians 4:13 reminds me that, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." That promise has carried me through every obstacle I have faced, from leaving home to building a new life in a different country. No matter where my career takes me, I want my life to reflect Christ through integrity, humility, and service. My greatest hope is that the technology I create, the people I mentor, and the way I treat others will point back to the God who has faithfully guided me every step of the way.

I have always been the kind of person who wants to know how things work. Whether it was a piece of music equipment that stopped working or a device that refused to cooperate, I was never satisfied with simply replacing it or waiting for someone else to fix it. I enjoyed taking the time to understand the problem, experimenting with different solutions, and learning something new along the way. Over time, I realized that what excited me most was not just fixing things but creating solutions that could improve people's everyday lives. That curiosity is what led me to pursue electrical engineering. For me, engineering is about much more than circuits and equations. It is about solving problems that matter. Technology has the power to make education more accessible, improve communication, strengthen communities, and create opportunities for people who may not have had them before. I want to be part of designing those solutions. My long term goal is to become an electrical engineer, gain industry experience, and eventually build a technology company that develops affordable electronic products for students, musicians, creators, and underserved communities. I want innovation to be something that reaches people who need it most, not just those who can afford it. The path to this goal has not always been easy. I was born and raised in Nigeria before moving to the United States to continue my education while living with my aunt. Leaving behind my parents, siblings, friends, and everything familiar was one of the hardest experiences of my life. I arrived in a completely different educational system where students were encouraged to ask questions, participate in discussions, and think independently. At first, I struggled to adjust. I was hesitant to speak because I worried about my accent, and there were moments when I questioned whether I truly belonged. Instead of allowing those challenges to define me, I decided to grow through them. I became more confident in the classroom, worked hard to earn strong grades, and looked for ways to contribute beyond academics. I served as the Secretary of my school's Black Student Union, managed the varsity basketball team, and continued serving my church through music by playing the piano and bass guitar. Each experience taught me something different about leadership, teamwork, and perseverance. More importantly, they reminded me that growth often begins outside of your comfort zone. The adversities I have faced have changed the way I define success. Success is not simply earning a degree or building a successful company. It is using the opportunities I have been given to create opportunities for others. I hope to mentor young engineers, support students who lack access to educational resources, and develop technologies that improve people's lives. My experiences have taught me resilience, gratitude, and the importance of giving back. Every challenge I have overcome has strengthened my determination to keep building, keep learning, and keep creating. I believe my journey has prepared me not only to become an engineer, but to become someone who uses engineering to make a lasting difference in the lives of others.

When I was growing up in Nigeria, I learned that talent alone is not enough to succeed. Opportunity matters just as much. I was fortunate to have parents who valued education and later an aunt who became my guardian and gave me the opportunity to continue my education in the United States. That experience showed me how a single person who invests in someone else's future can completely change the direction of a life. It also shaped the way I think about success. I do not believe success is only measured by what you achieve for yourself. I believe it is measured by the opportunities you create for others. Although I plan to pursue a career in electrical engineering and eventually build my own technology company, I have always seen nonprofit work as an essential part of that journey rather than something separate from it. I want my career to create solutions, but I also want those solutions to reach the people who need them most. One of the communities I care deeply about is young people who have the curiosity to build and create but lack access to the tools that make learning possible. As someone who enjoys experimenting with technology and solving technical problems, I know how exciting it is to discover how something works. Unfortunately, many students never have the chance to experience that feeling because engineering kits, electronics, and educational resources are often too expensive or unavailable. My goal is to change that. In the future, I hope to partner with nonprofit organizations, schools, and community centers to provide affordable engineering workshops and hands on learning opportunities for students from underserved communities. I want students to build circuits, program simple devices, and create projects that show them engineering is not something reserved for a select few. It is something they are capable of pursuing as well. I also hope to establish a nonprofit initiative through my future company that donates equipment, funds scholarships, and creates mentorship opportunities for students who dream of becoming engineers but do not know where to begin. I know how valuable encouragement can be because I have experienced it myself. My parents believed in me enough to send me across the world to pursue a better education, and my aunt devoted her time and energy to helping me succeed. I want to become that source of encouragement for someone else. Ultimately, I do not want my work to be remembered only for the products I build. I want it to be remembered for the doors it opens. If I can help one student discover a passion for engineering, give one aspiring inventor access to resources they never thought they could have, or inspire one young person to believe that their background does not define their future, then my work will have accomplished something far greater than financial success. That is the impact I hope to create throughout my career.

Ten years from now, I do not want to be known simply as an electrical engineer. I want to be known as someone who built products that solved real problems and made advanced technology more accessible to people who have often been overlooked. My goal is not to spend my career waiting for the next great idea from someone else. I want to build it. Over the next decade, I plan to earn my degree in Electrical Engineering while gaining experience in embedded systems, electronics, and product development. During college, I will pursue internships with companies that design consumer electronics and hardware products because I want to understand not only how products are engineered but also how they are manufactured, tested, and brought to market. At the same time, I will continue building projects outside the classroom. I have always learned best by experimenting, whether I was troubleshooting music equipment at church or figuring out how different recording technologies work. I want that habit of building and testing to remain at the center of my career. After graduation, I plan to work as an electrical engineer for several years. My purpose will not simply be to earn a salary. I want to study how successful engineering teams operate, how businesses make decisions, and why some products succeed while others fail. Those years will allow me to sharpen my technical skills while preparing to launch a company of my own. By the end of my first decade as an engineer, I intend to found a hardware technology company focused on creating affordable electronic products that improve everyday life. Many innovative devices are priced beyond the reach of students, schools, and communities with limited resources. I want to prove that useful technology does not have to be expensive to make a meaningful impact. My company will focus on designing products that are practical, reliable, and accessible, especially for creators, students, and underserved communities. I also hope to combine my background in music with my engineering education. As someone who has spent years recording music and solving technical problems with instruments and audio equipment, I understand how frustrating expensive or unreliable equipment can be. I want to develop affordable audio technology and electronic tools that allow musicians and content creators to produce high quality work without needing professional level budgets. Success for me is not measured only by revenue or patents. It is measured by the number of people whose opportunities expand because of something my company created. Ten years from now, I want to lead a team of engineers who are constantly building, improving, and questioning what is possible. I want to mentor young innovators, invest in student entrepreneurs, and create internships for students who may not otherwise have access to engineering careers. My vision is simple. I want to build a company that creates products with purpose, solves meaningful problems, and inspires the next generation of innovators to believe that great ideas can come from anywhere, including a curious student who once loved taking things apart just to understand how they worked.

"You touched it last, can you fix it?" I have heard that question more times than I can count. Whether it is a keyboard that suddenly refuses to play through the speakers, a recording setup that will not cooperate, or software that seems determined to crash at the worst possible moment, people usually turn to me. I do not mind. In fact, those moments are my favorite. One Sunday before church service, our rehearsal came to a halt because the keyboard had gone silent. Everyone had an opinion about what was wrong. Someone blamed the cables. Another person thought the keyboard itself had failed. As conversations filled the room, I quietly started working. I traced every connection from the keyboard to the audio interface, tested different cables, checked the mixer, and adjusted settings one by one. Nothing happened at first. Then, after another small adjustment, the speakers came to life. The room instantly shifted from worried conversations to music. No one applauded. They simply picked up where they had left off, and that was the best part. I had solved a problem that allowed everyone else to focus on what they came to do. Moments like that have taught me that tinkering is not about taking things apart just to see how they work. It is about refusing to accept "it just doesn't work" as an answer. I enjoy chasing the small details that other people overlook because I know that sometimes one overlooked detail is the difference between failure and success. That curiosity shows up everywhere in my life. When I record bass guitar videos, I spend hours experimenting with different audio settings until the sound matches what I hear in my head. If something sounds off, I do not settle for "good enough." I keep adjusting, testing, and learning. Every mistake becomes information instead of frustration. What surprises people is that I actually enjoy the moments when things go wrong. A broken setup gives me a chance to learn something I did not know before. Every problem I solve makes the next one a little less intimidating. Over time, people have come to trust me not because I always know the answer, but because they know I will stay with the problem until I find one. That mindset is one of the reasons I want to study electrical engineering. I want to build technologies that people can depend on, but more importantly, I want to become someone who solves problems that improve everyday life. Whether I am helping a church service run smoothly or designing systems that serve thousands of people, the feeling is the same. There is something deeply satisfying about turning confusion into clarity. I have learned that delighting others is rarely about doing something dramatic. Sometimes it is as simple as hearing music start again, watching people smile without realizing why, and knowing that a little curiosity made that moment possible.

When I said goodbye to my parents at the airport, I did not know when I would see them again. I was leaving Nigeria to continue my education in the United States, where my aunt would become my guardian. That moment marked the beginning of a completely new chapter in my life, one that would shape the person I am today. Growing up, my parents always taught me the importance of education, hard work, and faith. Even though they could not come with me, they believed that giving me the chance to study in the United States would open doors that were not available back home. My aunt welcomed me into her home and took on the responsibility of raising me. She became the person who encouraged me through every challenge and celebrated every accomplishment, no matter how small. Moving to a new country was not easy. I had to adjust to a different school system, a new culture, and a completely different way of learning. In Nigeria, I was used to listening quietly in class. In the United States, students were expected to ask questions, share opinions, and participate in discussions. At first, I was afraid to speak because I worried that my accent would make me stand out. There were moments when I felt out of place, but my aunt constantly reminded me that every challenge was an opportunity to grow. Her encouragement gave me the confidence to keep trying, even when I doubted myself. Living with my guardian also helped me become more independent. I learned how to manage my responsibilities, stay disciplined, and make the most of every opportunity I was given. I challenged myself academically and became involved in my school and community. I served as the Secretary of my school's Black Student Union, managed the varsity basketball team, and continued serving my church through music by playing the piano and bass guitar. These experiences taught me that leadership is about showing up consistently and using your abilities to help others. Watching both my parents and my aunt make sacrifices for my future has had a lasting impact on me. My parents trusted someone else to care for their son because they believed it would give me a better future. My aunt accepted that responsibility without hesitation. Their sacrifices remind me every day that success is never achieved alone. It is built on the love, support, and belief of the people who stand beside you. Their example has inspired my goal of becoming an electrical engineer. I want to use my education to create solutions that improve people's lives while also giving back to the communities that invested so much in me. I hope to build a future where I can support my family, mentor young students facing challenges of their own, and create opportunities for others just as my family created opportunities for me. Being raised by my aunt did more than give me a place to live. It taught me resilience, responsibility, and gratitude. Because of her guidance and my parents' unwavering faith in me, I have learned that where you begin does not determine where you can go. What matters most is having the courage to keep moving forward and the determination to make every sacrifice count.

The night before my physics midterm, the power went out in our apartment. Not for a few minutes — for six hours. My younger siblings were crying, my mom was on the phone trying to reach the landlord, and I was sitting at the kitchen table with a flashlight trying to finish a practice test on circuits and voltage. I remember thinking: if I actually understood this stuff, maybe I could fix it myself. I could not fix it. But that night planted something in me. Growing up, I watched my family spend money we did not have on problems that felt solvable. A busted refrigerator that took two weeks and three repairmen to fix. A phone charger that kept shorting out and started a small fire. A car that stalled every winter because no one could afford the diagnostic fee just to find out what was wrong. The pattern was always the same; something broke, and we had to wait for someone with the knowledge and the tools to come tell us what we already suspected. So when I think about what I would build if I had the resources, it is this: a small, affordable home diagnostic device; something the size of a smoke detector — that monitors the electrical systems in a house in real time. It would track power fluctuations, detect early signs of wiring failure, flag appliances drawing dangerous amounts of current, and send a plain-language alert to your phone before anything becomes a crisis. No electrician required just to understand what is happening in your own home. The device would use a simple sensor array installed at the breaker box, communicating through a low-cost app in multiple languages. The alerts would not speak in technical jargon. They would say things like: "Your refrigerator is using 40% more power than usual; this may mean the coils need cleaning" or "Circuit 3 had an irregular surge at 2 AM. Consider unplugging devices on that circuit tonight." Early warnings, clear language, no barrier. The funding would go toward three things: miniaturized sensor hardware that can be manufactured cheaply enough to retail under thirty dollars, a multilingual app built for low-literacy users, and a partnership program that places the devices for free in low-income housing units through utility companies. Utility companies already pay enormous costs from fires and outages caused by aging residential wiring; this device gives them a financial reason to invest in prevention. I am not an electrician. I am a high school student interested in electrical engineering. But I know what it costs a family when the infrastructure around them fails quietly, slowly, and without warning. The problem I want to solve is not just electrical; it is the gap between people who can afford to prevent a crisis and people who can only afford to survive one. I want to close that gap with something small, affordable, and built for the people who need it most. That night with the flashlight, I could not fix the power. But I am building toward the version of myself who can.

The gym was empty except for the two of us. Practice had ended an hour earlier, but Marcus was still sitting in the bleachers, staring at a crumpled worksheet like it had personally wronged him. He was a junior on my basketball team, talented on the court, but algebra was beating him worse than any opponent we had faced all season. I sat down next to him and said, "Let me show you something." That night, I did not just help him solve equations. I watched something shift behind his eyes. When he finally worked through a problem on his own and got it right, he looked up at me like he had just hit a game-winner at the buzzer. That feeling, watching someone discover what they are capable of, settled something deep inside me. I knew then that I wanted to spend my life creating that moment for other people. Growing up as a first-generation Nigerian American, I learned early that education is not guaranteed. My family sacrificed so that I could have access to opportunities they never had. I sat in classrooms where teachers passed over students who looked like me, where STEM felt like a subject meant for someone else. But I also had moments where the right explanation at the right time changed everything. I know both sides of that equation, and that is exactly why I want to be an educator. My goal is to become a STEM teacher in an underserved community, the kind of community I grew up in. I want to be the person in the room who makes a student feel like science and math belong to them. Too many young people, especially Black and Brown students, never see themselves reflected in STEM spaces. They do not lack ability. They lack access to someone who believes in them and knows how to reach them. I want to be that person. What I learned from tutoring Marcus is that great teaching is not about having all the answers. It is about staying in the room. It is about sitting down next to someone when everyone else has gone home and saying, "Let me show you something." It is about patience, trust, and the belief that every student has a moment waiting inside them where everything clicks. Education changed the trajectory of my family. I want to pass that forward. Through my career as a STEM educator, I plan to build classrooms where curiosity is protected, where struggling is safe, and where students from any background can see a future in science and math. The ripple effect of one great teacher lasts generations. I have seen it. I have felt it. And I am ready to become it.

The night the lights went out in our house, my mother lit a candle and kept cooking. We had fallen behind on the electric bill, and instead of explaining that to me, she just smiled and said, "We work with what we have." I was twelve. I did not fully understand what we were going through, but I understood her. She was still providing. Still showing up. That image never left me. It also planted a question that has followed me ever since: what does it mean to truly power something? Not just flip a switch, but build something that keeps going even when resources run thin and circumstances push back? That question is what pulled me toward electrical engineering. The field sits at the intersection of problem-solving and real-world impact, and for communities like mine, those two things are never separate. When a neighborhood loses power during a heat wave, that is not just a technical failure. It is a health crisis, an economic hit, and a reminder of who gets left behind when systems are not built with everyone in mind. I want to be the person who changes that equation. My goal is to one day build a company focused on sustainable energy infrastructure in underserved communities. Not a charity, but a real business rooted in the idea that access to reliable power is not a luxury. It is a foundation. Whether that means designing affordable solar solutions for low-income households, developing smart grid technology that prioritizes equity, or creating jobs in communities that have historically been overlooked by the tech industry, I want the work to be both profitable and purposeful. I have seen firsthand that the two do not have to be in conflict. But I am not waiting until some future version of myself to start building. Right now, I shine my light in smaller ways that still matter to me. I co-produce music with a close friend, spending hours in Soundtrap piecing together sounds that reflect where we come from and where we are headed. I train in the weight room with the same discipline I bring to my classwork, because I believe how you do one thing is how you do everything. On the basketball court, I play as a guard and wing, and I have learned more about leadership and composure from that role than from almost anything else. Leading a fast break when the game is on the line is not so different from leading a team through a hard problem. My legacy will not be defined by a single invention or a single moment. It will be built through consistency: showing up for my community the way my mother showed up for our family in the dark, using what I have, learning what I do not yet know, and refusing to let the absence of resources become an excuse for the absence of effort. The lights came back on in our house eventually. I plan to spend the rest of my life making sure they do for others too.

Build Anyway Elon Musk was told SpaceX would fail. Three rockets exploded before one ever reached orbit. Most people would have stopped. He didn't. That stubbornness, that refusal to let failure be the final word, is what first made me pay attention to him. I was in middle school when I started watching interviews and documentaries about Musk, not because I idolized everything about him, but because the way he thought about problems fascinated me. He didn't accept the world as fixed. He looked at aerospace, energy, and transportation and asked why things had to work the way they always had. That question, why does it have to be this way, became one I started asking in my own life. In math class. On the court. In the moments when something felt too hard to figure out. His obsession with first principles thinking, stripping a problem down to its most basic truths and rebuilding from there, gave me a framework I still use. What Musk modeled was that ambition without follow-through is just dreaming. He pursued engineering with the kind of focused intensity that made me realize higher education wasn't just a next step. It was a launchpad. The technical depth required to do what he and his teams have done at Tesla and SpaceX doesn't come from curiosity alone. It comes from rigorous study, from mastering the fundamentals so thoroughly that you can eventually break the rules with precision. That understanding changed how I approached school. I stopped seeing my courses as obligations and started seeing them as tools. Speech and debate sharpened something Musk's story pointed me toward: the ability to communicate an idea as powerfully as you can build one. Watching someone like Musk command a room, explain a rocket's reentry burn to a general audience, break down battery chemistry without losing anyone, I realized that the engineers who change the world are also the ones who can make the world understand why it matters. Speech and debate put me in that pressure. I had to research deeply, structure arguments clearly, and defend my positions under scrutiny. It taught me that knowing something and being able to articulate it are two completely different skills, and that I needed both. There is a version of ambition that stays quiet, that sits with a dream and never speaks it out loud. Elon Musk, for all his complexity, showed me the other version. The one that builds in public, fails in public, and keeps going anyway. I want to be an electrical engineer who builds things that matter. Speech and debate taught me to stand behind that goal with my voice, not just my intentions.

I have walked into rooms where nobody looked like me, and I have felt the weight of that silence before a single word was spoken. It happened in a summer engineering program the year before high school. I was one of two Black students in the entire cohort. The content excited me, circuits, logic gates, the way systems could be designed to solve real problems. But something else sat underneath that excitement, a quiet discomfort I couldn't shake. I kept wondering whether I belonged there. Not because anyone told me I didn't. But because nothing around me reflected back that I did. That experience didn't push me away from STEM. It pulled me deeper in, with a new question attached: what happens to the students who don't push through? Representation in STEM is not about optics. It is not about filling a quota or checking a box on a diversity report. It is about who gets to shape the future. When the people designing the technology, building the infrastructure, and solving the world's most complex problems all come from the same narrow slice of humanity, the solutions they build carry that narrowness with them. A medical device calibrated on one body type fails another. A facial recognition algorithm trained on limited data misidentifies millions. These are not hypothetical concerns. They are documented failures with real consequences for real people. Diverse representation fixes this at the root. When engineers, scientists, and researchers bring different lived experiences into the room, they ask different questions. They catch blind spots others cannot see because they have never had to see them. Diversity is not a social courtesy extended to underrepresented groups. It is a technical advantage that makes the work itself better. But beyond the data, there is something simpler and just as powerful. Young people need to see themselves in the futures they are asked to imagine. I think about a kid sitting in a classroom right now, the way I once sat, feeling that quiet discomfort and wondering if the room was really meant for them. Representation answers that question before it has to be asked. A Black woman leading a NASA mission, a first generation Latino engineer at a top firm, a student from a low income background presenting at a research conference. These are not just individual achievements. They are permissions. They tell the next generation that the door was always open, even when it didn't look that way. I want to be one of those permissions. I want to walk into rooms as an electrical engineer and make them feel less heavy for whoever comes in behind me. Because the best thing representation does is not just change who is in STEM. It changes who believes they can be.

Not all at once. It started as restlessness, then became hours of staring at my ceiling, then became something I couldn't name. My mind ran laps at 3 a.m. while the rest of the house was quiet. I'd replay conversations I'd had weeks ago, searching for the moment I said the wrong thing. I'd rehearse arguments that hadn't happened yet. I was exhausted by morning and wired by midnight, and I told nobody because I didn't have a word for what was happening to me. I just thought I was failing at being okay. Basketball was supposed to fix it. That's what I'd always believed. Get in the gym, run it out, sweat until the noise stops. But I'd finish a two hour practice and the noise would be there waiting, sitting in the passenger seat on the drive home. I started making mistakes I never used to make, missing assignments, losing focus mid conversation, forgetting plays I had memorized since freshman year. My coach pulled me aside once and asked if I was alright. I said yes. I was so practiced at saying yes. It was my mom who finally noticed what I couldn't say. Not because I told her, but because she saw me sitting in the kitchen at 2 a.m. for the third night in a row, staring at nothing. She didn't ask what was wrong. She just sat down next to me. That silence was the first moment in months I felt like I could breathe. She got me talking to someone. A therapist. I went in expecting to be told I was overreacting. Instead, I learned I had been carrying anxiety for years without a name for it, without knowing it wasn't just who I was. That first session cracked something open. I started understanding that the 3 a.m. spirals weren't character flaws. They were symptoms. And symptoms could be worked on. Therapy taught me things the classroom never did. It taught me that strength isn't silence. That asking for help isn't weakness dressed up in humility. It actually takes more courage to say "I'm not okay" than to perform okayness for everyone around you. I started being honest with my closest friends, not dumping everything on them, but letting them in. The weight got lighter when it was shared. I still have hard nights. But I know what they are now. I know they pass. And I know I don't have to sit alone in the kitchen waiting for morning anymore. Mental health shaped me in ways I'm still discovering. It made me more attentive to the people around me, quicker to check in, slower to assume someone is fine just because they say so. It made me a better teammate, a better friend, and a more honest version of myself. I used to think being okay was the goal. Now I know that being real is so much more valuable than being okay.

The night before my physics exam, I wasn't reading a textbook. I was watching a man rebuild a circuit board on YouTube at 1 a.m., completely locked in. That moment told me something: I don't just learn by sitting still and absorbing. I learn by watching, doing, and digging deeper than a classroom period allows. Online platforms haven't just supplemented my education. They've reshaped how I think. For electrical engineering, Khan Academy gave me the foundation. When my teacher moved past a concept before it clicked, Khan Academy let me slow it down, rewind, and rebuild my understanding at my own pace. But the resource that genuinely changed how I see circuits and systems is MIT OpenCourseWare. Accessing actual MIT lecture notes and problem sets felt like being handed a door into a world I'm working toward. It pushed me to stop thinking like a student trying to pass and start thinking like an engineer trying to solve. I began approaching problems with more patience, sketching diagrams, checking my logic twice, asking why the math works before accepting that it does. For music production, YouTube has been my studio mentor. My friend and I started producing together on Soundtrap, and every time we hit a wall, a muddy mix or a beat that wouldn't sit right, I turned to producers breaking down their process in real time. Watching how someone sequences a track or layers frequencies taught me that creativity has structure. That lesson crossed over into my engineering mindset: systems, whether musical or electrical, only work when every component serves the whole. Even fitness pointed me toward the internet. When I was recovering from a joint injury, I used PubMed and training forums to understand the biomechanics behind the exercises my physical therapist prescribed. I wasn't content just doing the reps. I wanted to know what each movement was rebuilding and why. That same instinct shows up when I study: I'm not chasing the grade, I'm chasing the understanding behind it. Basketball sharpened this even further. I've used Hudl to break down game film, both my own and others'. Watching film isn't passive. You pause, rewind, and question every decision. Over time, I started applying that same analytical frame to everything else: why did this problem go wrong, what would I change, how do I adjust? The court became a classroom, and the screen became a chalkboard. What these platforms share is that they meet me where curiosity lives, past the bell, past the worksheet, in the hours when I'm genuinely asking questions no one assigned. They've taught me that learning isn't a schedule. It's a habit. And I've built mine one late night video, one open source lecture, and one rewound play at a time.

The first time I traced a blown fuse on a string of Christmas lights in the freezing cold, something clicked. Not just the lights — something in my head. It was a Saturday morning in December, and my hands were numb, but I refused to call it quits on a strand that had gone dark halfway through a roofline. I grabbed my voltage tester, worked my way down the circuit one bulb at a time, and when I finally found the one faulty socket killing the whole line, I felt a rush I did not expect. Not relief. Excitement. That curiosity, that need to figure out how electricity moves and why it sometimes does not, is exactly why I want to be an electrical engineer. My part time job hanging Christmas lights sounds simple on the surface. But every house is a different puzzle. You are dealing with load calculations, series versus parallel circuits, GFCI outlets, and weatherproofing connections that have to survive rain, wind, and below freezing temperatures. I have had moments where an entire display goes dark right before a client walks outside to see it, and I have had to diagnose the problem under pressure in under five minutes. One evening, a homeowner had a holiday party starting in an hour and half their roofline went completely dark twenty minutes before guests arrived. I did not panic. I methodically worked through each connection point, identified a loose splice near the gutter line, secured it, and watched the whole display come back to life just in time. The homeowner looked at me like I had performed a miracle. To me, it just felt like solving a problem the right way. Those moments taught me something no classroom had yet. Engineering is not just theory. It is pressure, problem solving, and the satisfaction of making something work when it was not. Every time I troubleshoot a circuit on a rooftop, I am thinking about voltage, resistance, and current flow. I started looking up concepts on my own, watching videos about how electrical systems in homes actually work, and connecting what I was doing with my hands to what I was learning with my mind. That self driven curiosity is what pushed me toward electrical engineering as a career, not just a subject. What drives me is not only a love of circuits. It is the feeling of turning a problem into a solution with my own hands and my own mind working together. I want to spend my life doing that at a higher level, designing systems that power homes, support communities, and push technology forward. Electrical engineering sits at the center of almost every major challenge the world is trying to solve right now, from renewable energy to advanced communications to medical devices. I want to be one of the people building those solutions. I am only seventeen, and I know I have a lot to learn. But I also know that most people my age have never stood on a ladder in December, diagnosed a failing circuit under a deadline, and felt genuinely thrilled by the process. That feeling is not something I found in a textbook. It found me on a rooftop, voltage tester in hand, chasing down a problem no one else wanted to deal with. That is who I am as a student, as a worker, and as a future engineer. I do not just want to understand how things work. I want to be the person who makes them work better.

The summer I turned sixteen, the lights went out in my grandmother's neighborhood again. Not because of a storm. Not because of an accident. Because the infrastructure was old, neglected, and nobody in power seemed to think it was urgent enough to fix. My grandmother sat in the dark with her oxygen machine running off a dying backup battery, and I sat next to her, helpless, holding a flashlight and a quiet rage I didn't yet have words for. That night planted something in me. When I started learning about electrical systems in school, I realized the gap I had witnessed wasn't just bad luck. It was a pattern. Underserved communities consistently face longer outages, older grid infrastructure, and slower utility response times than wealthier neighborhoods. The need was real, measurable, and largely ignored. So I decided not to wait for someone else to fix it. I launched a self-initiated community energy awareness project targeting low-income households in my area that had little to no knowledge of energy assistance programs, backup power resources, or how to navigate utility companies when things went wrong. I started small by designing bilingual informational flyers and going door to door with a neighbor who helped me translate. People were skeptical at first. I was a teenager with printed papers and a rehearsed speech, and I understood why they were hesitant to trust me. But I kept showing up. The project grew. I partnered with a local community center to host two workshops where I walked residents through how to apply for utility assistance, what rights they had as tenants regarding electrical safety, and basic steps they could take to prepare for outages before they happened. Some of the people I met had been dealing with flickering lights and tripped breakers for years without knowing they had options. Watching someone realize they had rights they never knew about was one of the most meaningful things I have ever experienced. Over three months, I helped over 40 families connect to resources they did not know existed. The goal was never just to hand out pamphlets. I wanted to build something replicable, something that any other student with a laptop and a library card could use to do the same thing in their own zip code. So I documented everything. Every resource, every agency contact, every step of the process became part of a public toolkit I put online for free. This work changed the way I think about engineering. I used to see it as a field about problem solving in the abstract, about circuits and systems on a whiteboard. Now I see it as something with weight and responsibility attached to it. The decisions engineers make about where to invest, what to build, and who gets prioritized in infrastructure planning have real consequences for real people. My grandmother was one of them. I am pursuing electrical engineering because I believe infrastructure is a justice issue. The communities that need reliable power the most are often the last ones to receive it, and that is not an accident. It is the result of decisions that future engineers will either repeat or refuse to make. I intend to be the kind of engineer who refuses. That night in my grandmother's living room was not just a bad memory. It was the moment I found my direction, and I have been moving toward it ever since.

I discovered "brutal" at the exact wrong time — which, looking back, was the exact right time. It was late. Later than I should have been awake. I was sitting at my piano, somewhere between frustration and obsession, trying to finish a beat that wasn't coming together. I had school in the morning. I had things I was supposed to be doing. Instead, I had headphones on and a track loop running for the forty-seventh time, chasing something I couldn't name yet. That's when Olivia Rodrigo's voice cut through — raw, a little chaotic, exhausted in the way that only someone deeply tired of performing okayness can sound. I heard myself in that song. Not in a dramatic way. In the quiet, specific way of recognizing your own handwriting in someone else's notebook. Growing up, I had absorbed the idea that ambition is supposed to look clean. Focused. Purposeful. You are supposed to know what you want, work toward it methodically, sleep on time, and emerge with results that match the effort. Nobody tells you that real creative drive is messier than that — that it shows up at midnight, that it ignores schedules, that it asks you to sacrifice the version of yourself that has it together in exchange for the version of yourself that actually makes something. I am a pianist and a music producer. I work in hip-hop, trap, and R&B. My classical training gave me the architecture of sound — harmony, tension, resolution. Production gave me the tools to make that architecture feel. But the thing neither of those taught me, the thing I had to learn slowly and sometimes painfully on my own, is that the work doesn't come on demand. It comes when it comes. And for me, it comes late. For a long time, I was embarrassed by that. The late nights felt like a character flaw — evidence that I lacked the discipline everyone else seemed to have. I watched people talk about their routines, their five a.m. wake-ups, their systems. And then I'd be up at two in the morning, finally cracking open a chord progression that had been stuck for days, wondering why I couldn't just be more normal about it. What "brutal" gave me was permission to stop pretending the mess wasn't there — and to start looking at it honestly. Because the mess wasn't the problem. The mess was the work. Every late night was evidence of something I cared about too much to leave unfinished. Every imperfect beat was a step toward a better one. The exhaustion I felt wasn't weakness. It was the cost of actually trying. I am still learning to own that. I don't always get it right. But I have stopped apologizing for the hours, for the obsession, for the parts of my process that don't fit neatly into a narrative of effortless achievement. Adolescence taught me that you don't have to have yourself figured out to be worth something. You just have to keep showing up for the thing that pulls you back, night after night, even when it's hard. For me, that thing is music. And I intend to follow it as far as it goes.

There is a version of discipline that looks nothing like discipline. It does not wake up early. It does not follow a schedule. It does not go to bed on time. It sits at a piano at 1 a.m., chasing a chord progression that isn't quite right yet, looping the same four bars until something clicks — and then, suddenly, it is 4 a.m., and the beat is done, and it is the best thing I have ever made. That is my version. I am a pianist and a music producer. I work in hip-hop, trap, and R&B — genres built on tension, on feeling, on the kind of emotional precision that either hits or it doesn't. My classical piano training gave me the theory: chord voicings, harmonic movement, the architecture beneath a melody. Production gave me the tools to make that theory breathe. Together, they gave me a creative identity I have spent years building, mostly in the late hours of the night when the rest of the world has gone quiet. People hear "he doesn't sleep on time" and assume carelessness. What they don't see is the work behind it. They don't see the hours spent layering samples, tuning 808s to the root note of a chord, rearranging a bridge until the emotional arc of a song finally lands where it's supposed to. They don't see the discipline it takes to finish something — to push through the part where a track sounds broken and trust that you can fix it, because you have fixed it before. Late nights are not a bad habit I haven't corrected. They are when I am most alive creatively, and I have learned not to apologize for that. What drives me is the moment a track becomes undeniable. Not good — undeniable. The kind of record where someone hears it for the first time and immediately wants to hear it again. That standard is hard to reach, and most attempts don't get there, but the pursuit of it has made me a better musician, a more patient problem-solver, and someone deeply committed to excellence in craft. Those are not qualities that stay inside a studio. They are qualities I carry into every room I enter. I am applying for this scholarship because ambition without resources has a ceiling, and I am not interested in ceilings. I want to study, grow, and build something in music that lasts — not just songs, but a body of work that means something. The foundation is already there. The drive is not in question. What this scholarship represents is the ability to pursue that vision without the weight of financial limitation pressing down on what should be a creative journey. The hours nobody sees are where I was built. I intend to make sure the world sees what came out of them.

1. What trade are you pursuing and why are you passionate about it? The waiting room of a community clinic taught me something no classroom could: that a calm voice and a steady hand can mean everything to someone who has nowhere else to turn. I am pursuing a career in nursing because I have seen firsthand what it means to live in a community where quality healthcare feels out of reach — and I refuse to be a bystander to that gap. Nursing is not just a profession to me; it is a calling rooted in the belief that every person, regardless of zip code or income, deserves dignified, compassionate care. I want to be the nurse who remembers names, who explains diagnoses in plain language, and who makes patients feel seen when the system threatens to make them feel invisible. 2. What are your future plans after your trade education? After completing my nursing education, I plan to work in a community health setting — ideally in an underserved area where the need for skilled, empathetic nurses is greatest. I am particularly drawn to public health nursing and patient advocacy, roles where I can address not just immediate medical needs but the social and environmental conditions that shape health outcomes. Long term, I hope to pursue a BSN and eventually a nurse practitioner license, so I can take on greater responsibility and expand the scope of care I provide to the communities that need it most. Every step of this path is pointed in the same direction: back to the people who shaped me. 3. Describe a time in your life when you overcame adversity. How did you work through it? There was a semester when I was simultaneously studying, working to cover my own expenses, and helping support my family — and I won't pretend it was graceful. Money was tight in ways that made every decision feel high-stakes: whether to buy a textbook or cover a bill, whether to pick up an extra shift or show up to a study session. What carried me through was stubbornness dressed up as discipline. I built a strict schedule, leaned on free resources, and refused to let financial pressure become a reason to lower my ceiling. That season of my life didn't break me — it clarified exactly why I was working so hard and for whom. The adversity wasn't an obstacle to my path; it became the foundation of it.

I didn't choose to play piano for my church congregation because anyone asked me to. I chose it because it was the one thing I could give. Every Sunday for the past two years, I've sat at that bench, fingers finding keys I've practiced a hundred times, leading worship for people who needed somewhere to direct their hope. That quiet act of service — repeated, unglamorous, faithful — has shaped how I understand my purpose more than almost anything else in my life. I am a Christian, and my faith is not background noise. It is the foundation beneath every decision I make, every commitment I keep, and every goal I set. It taught me that contribution is not measured in grand gestures but in consistency — showing up when it's inconvenient, serving when no one is watching, doing the work because it matters, not because it's recognized. That conviction shows up everywhere in my life. Academically, I have always been drawn to subjects that reward precision and logic. Math has been my strongest domain — currently pushing through Calculus AB, I find genuine satisfaction in the way a complex problem collapses into clarity through the right method. It was that love of problem-solving that pointed me toward electrical engineering. I began tinkering with basic circuits in a physics elective, fascinated by how invisible forces — current, voltage, resistance — could be harnessed into systems that power real life. That class confirmed what my uncle had suggested years earlier at a kitchen table covered in circuit boards: that engineering is where math becomes meaning. Beyond academics, I serve. I help with weekly maintenance at my church — the kind of work that keeps a community functioning but rarely earns applause. As Vice President of my school's chess club, I help lead a space where students build discipline and strategic thinking. As team manager for the varsity basketball team, I keep operations running behind the scenes so athletes can compete at their best. None of these roles put me in the spotlight. All of them require me to be dependable, organized, and genuinely invested in the people around me. My greatest weakness is that I can be too self-reliant. I was raised to work hard and push through difficulty, and that determination has served me well. But I've learned — through injury, through setbacks, through moments where I needed guidance and hesitated to ask for it — that strength also means knowing when to reach out. I am actively learning to receive help as graciously as I give it. My vision for the future is specific. I want to earn a degree in electrical engineering, specialize in power systems and renewable energy, and work on the infrastructure that brings sustainable electricity to underserved communities — both domestically and abroad. There are neighborhoods in this country, and regions across the developing world, where unreliable power is not an inconvenience but a crisis. It limits access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunity. I want to be part of the generation of engineers that treats that as an unacceptable reality and builds toward something better. Long term, I hope to found or contribute to an organization that deploys affordable solar microgrid systems in low-income communities — marrying technical expertise with the spirit of service my faith has instilled in me since childhood. This scholarship would meet a real and pressing need. College is the next deliberate step in a journey I have been building carefully, and financial support would allow me to focus fully on that journey — on rigorous coursework, hands-on research, and continued community service — rather than on the weight of cost. I do not take opportunities like this lightly. I understand that someone else's investment in me becomes my obligation to invest in others. I intend to honor that obligation — in the classroom, in my career, and in every community I am fortunate enough to serve.

The summer I was twelve, my uncle spread a circuit board across the kitchen table like it was a map to somewhere important. "Every wire has a job," he said, tracing a copper path with his finger. "You cut one, the whole system fails. You design it right — you change how people live." He was an electrical engineer working on solar grid systems. I didn't fully understand what he meant then. I do now. That kitchen table is why I'm pursuing electrical engineering. And it's why I'm going to college with something more than curiosity — I'm going with a mission. To me, college is the infrastructure between where I am and what I'm capable of building. The world is facing an energy crisis that is also a justice crisis — communities without reliable power, grids buckling under climate pressure, renewable solutions sitting underfunded and underbuilt. I want to be one of the engineers who changes that. Not abstractly, not someday — but with the specific, technical fluency that only rigorous education can provide. Every course I take, every lab I work through, every problem set I wrestle with late at night is a step toward that goal. What I'm trying to accomplish is not vague. I want to master the foundations of electrical systems, specialize in sustainable energy technology, and eventually design solutions that make clean power more accessible and resilient — especially in the communities that need it most. That ambition requires more than drive. It requires calculus, circuit theory, signal processing, and the kind of disciplined, collaborative problem-solving that happens when motivated people are placed in rooms with hard problems. College is where I gain those tools. I know what it means to pursue something difficult with no guarantee of success. Six months before my senior year, a joint injury threatened to end my time in the weight room — a space that had become central to how I processed challenge, built confidence, and learned to trust myself. Rather than step away, I rebuilt deliberately, rep by rep, week by week, until I was stronger than before. That experience didn't just shape my body. It shaped how I approach every obstacle: not with hesitation, but with a plan. I carry that same mindset into my education. I will not wait until I feel ready to engage with hard material. I will not shy away from courses that challenge me or research that humbles me. I will show up consistently, ask the questions that feel too basic and the ones that feel too ambitious, and trust that competence is built the same way strength is — through honest, repeated effort over time. My uncle still has that circuit board. For years it sat in the back of my mind as a symbol of something just out of reach — a language I wanted to speak but hadn't yet learned. College is where I learn it. Not just the technical language of circuits and systems, but the larger language of impact: how to identify a problem that matters, build the knowledge to address it, and apply that knowledge in ways that outlast me. Every wire has a job. I'm ready to find mine.

The night the lights went out, I learned what it meant to live without power — not just electricity, but agency. I was sixteen when my family fell apart. Grief and instability moved in like uninvited guests who refused to leave. Responsibilities I never asked for landed on my shoulders, and the future I had imagined for myself started to feel like someone else's dream. But in the middle of that chaos, I found something unexpected: a fascination with how things work. When the world around me felt broken, I wanted to understand how to fix it — not just emotionally, but literally. Circuits, systems, infrastructure. The invisible architecture that keeps a community alive. That curiosity became my lifeline, and it pointed me toward electrical engineering. Higher education isn't just a credential to me — it's a door. On the other side of it is the version of myself who has the tools, the language, and the technical credibility to actually build something meaningful. An engineering degree will give me fluency in power systems, renewable energy, and smart infrastructure — the disciplines that determine whether communities thrive or fall behind. I've seen what it looks like when a community is under-resourced, when the grid is unreliable, when people are making decisions about their lives without access to the same advantages others take for granted. I don't want to study that from a distance. I want to be someone who closes that gap. My goal is to work at the intersection of engineering and community development — designing solutions that serve people who are often overlooked by the systems meant to protect them. That might look like sustainable energy projects in underserved neighborhoods, or infrastructure development in communities still recovering from economic loss, or simply mentoring the next generation of young engineers who, like me, didn't grow up seeing themselves in the field. I don't believe impact has a single shape. I believe it's cumulative — every person you equip, every system you improve, every young kid who sees someone who looks like them holding a blueprint. What higher education gives me is not just knowledge. It gives me proximity to people, problems, and possibilities I couldn't access otherwise. It gives me the chance to sit at tables where decisions get made and bring the perspective of someone who knows what's at stake when those decisions go wrong. I've lived the cost of broken systems. That's not a disadvantage I'm trying to overcome — it's a lens I'm bringing into every room I enter. I also carry with me the understanding that resilience isn't born in comfort. It's built in the moments when you have no other choice but to push forward. My family's struggles didn't break me. They clarified me. They showed me who I am when things are hard, and they gave me a hunger to make sure others don't have to navigate hardship without support. Engineering, at its core, is about solving problems for people. I intend to take that literally. My education will be the foundation — but the community will always be the reason.

The doctor told me I might never move the same way again. Sitting in that sterile office, staring at images of my damaged joint, I felt something unexpected — not despair, but defiance. That was the moment fitness stopped being something I did and became something I lived. Before my injury, I took movement for granted. Strength felt like a birthright, something permanently wired into my body that would always show up when I needed it. Then my joint gave out, and suddenly the simplest things became a daily negotiation with pain. Getting up from a chair. Climbing a single flight of stairs. Sleeping through the night without waking up in agony. My own body had become unfamiliar territory, and I faced a choice that would quietly define everything that followed: retreat from it, or fight for it. I chose the barbell. Weightlifting gave me something that physical therapy alone couldn't — it gave me agency. Every rep became a conversation with my body, a chance to rebuild trust with something that had let me down. I learned to move with intention, to strengthen the muscles surrounding my injury, to respect my limits while quietly, consistently pressing past them. Progress wasn't measured in pounds on the bar at first. It was measured in pain-free mornings. In stairs I climbed without wincing. In the moment I realized I was no longer moving around my injury — I was moving through it. What surprised me most was how weightlifting rewired not just my body, but my mindset. The gym became a classroom. I learned patience — that the body adapts on its own timeline, not yours. I learned humility — that dropping weight to protect your form is never weakness, it's wisdom. And I learned resilience in its purest form: showing up on the hard days, the painful days, the days when progress felt invisible, and trusting the process anyway. Those lessons didn't stay inside the gym walls. They followed me into every difficult moment life handed me after that. Fitness didn't cure my injury. There are still days my joint reminds me of what happened, a dull ache that serves as both a warning and a motivator. But it completely transformed my relationship with my own body — from one of frustration and fear to one of deep, hard-earned gratitude. I stopped seeing my body as something broken and started seeing it as something brave. It had endured, adapted, and grown stronger in ways I never anticipated when I was sitting in that doctor's office. I am passionate about fitness because it handed me back something my injury tried to take — the belief that I am capable, that I am resilient, and that every setback carries within it the blueprint for a comeback. Strength training didn't just rebuild my body. It rebuilt my confidence, my discipline, and my sense of self. Today, I don't just lift weights. I lift the version of myself that could have quit. I put that person down stronger every single time — and I am only just getting started.

The first time I stood up to give a speech, my hands were shaking so badly I had to grip the podium just to keep my note cards from slipping. I remember looking out at the room, trying to steady my voice, and realizing something: it wasn’t just about saying the right words—it was about meaning them. That moment didn’t just shape me as a speaker; it quietly began shaping how I would one day share my faith. Speech and debate taught me how to communicate clearly, but more importantly, it taught me how to listen. In debate rounds, I quickly learned that winning wasn’t just about having strong arguments—it was about understanding the other person’s perspective. That skill has been essential in my faith. Sharing Christianity isn’t about talking over someone or forcing beliefs; it’s about meeting people where they are. As 1 Peter 3:15 teaches, we should “always be prepared to give an answer… but do this with gentleness and respect.” Debate trained me not just to respond, but to respond with respect. Another way speech and debate prepared me is by building confidence under pressure. There’s nothing quite like standing in front of judges, knowing every word counts. At first, I feared saying the wrong thing or being judged. But over time, I learned to stay calm, think on my feet, and trust my preparation. Sharing my faith can feel similar. There are moments when I’m unsure how someone will respond or if I’ll explain something well. But verses like 2 Timothy 1:7 remind me that “God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” Speech gave me the confidence to speak; my faith gives me the courage to speak with purpose. Speech also taught me the power of storytelling. The most impactful speeches aren’t just filled with facts—they’re personal, real, and relatable. That lesson changed how I think about sharing my faith. Instead of relying only on general ideas, I’ve learned to share my own experiences—how my beliefs guide my decisions, how prayer has helped me through challenges, and how my faith gives me purpose. In Mark 5:19, Jesus tells a man, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you.” That idea of sharing personal testimony aligns exactly with what speech taught me: people connect with stories, not just statements. At the same time, debate pushed me to think critically. It forced me to question assumptions, analyze arguments, and support what I say with reasoning. That has strengthened my faith as well. Instead of believing something just because I was told, I’ve learned to ask why. Proverbs 18:15 says, “The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.” Because of debate, I feel more prepared to engage thoughtfully when questions about Christianity arise, rather than avoiding them. Finally, speech and debate reminded me that words have impact. Every argument, every speech, and every response has the power to influence others. That responsibility connects deeply with Colossians 4:6: “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt.” It’s not just what I say, but how I say it that matters. Looking back, speech and debate didn’t just prepare me to speak—it prepared me to connect. It taught me that communication is not about winning, but about understanding and being understood. What started as a nervous moment behind a podium has grown into something much bigger. Speech and debate gave me a voice, but my faith gave that voice a purpose.

Math shows up in life more often than people expect, usually without announcing itself. It’s in the background, quietly helping decisions make sense—whether that’s figuring out how much time is left before a test, how to split a bill with friends, or why a beat sounds just right when it finally clicks. Learning math has taught me that it’s not just about numbers on a page; it’s about training your brain to think clearly, break problems into steps, and not panic when something looks complicated at first glance. Being in AP Calculus AB has pushed me into a deeper level of that thinking. At first, limits, derivatives, and integrals felt like trying to read a new language with no subtitles. But over time, I started to notice patterns and connections. Suddenly, math wasn’t just abstract—it became a tool for understanding motion, change, and real-world systems. That shift didn’t just help me in class; it changed how I approach problems in general. Now, instead of avoiding something difficult, I’m more likely to lean in and ask, “Okay, what’s really going on here?” That curiosity has become one of my biggest strengths. Math also helps people make better decisions. It teaches you how to analyze information instead of just reacting to it. In everyday life, that might mean comparing options, estimating outcomes, or recognizing when something doesn’t add up. It’s the difference between guessing and actually thinking things through. And while math can’t tell you every answer in life, it definitely sharpens how you look for answers. For me, math connects directly to my goal of pursuing electrical engineering. Engineering is essentially applied math—using equations and models to design systems that actually work in the real world. Whether it’s circuits, signals, or energy systems, math is the foundation that makes all of it possible. Without it, you’re basically trying to build a bridge without knowing how weight distribution works… which, to be fair, sounds like a very short-lived bridge. There’s also something satisfying about how math rewards persistence. It doesn’t care how confident you feel at the beginning—it cares about effort and understanding. When you finally solve a problem after struggling with it for a while, it feels less like winning and more like unlocking something you didn’t realize you could do. That process has taught me patience and resilience, especially when things don’t come easily right away. What really drives me, though, is curiosity. I don’t just want to learn math to pass a class—I want to understand how far it can go and how it connects to the world around me. I want to see how the same principles I’m learning in AP Calculus show up in engineering, music, technology, and beyond. Math feels like a toolkit that keeps expanding the more you use it, and I’m interested in seeing how many tools I can collect over time. In the end, math helps people think better, solve problems more effectively, and understand the world on a deeper level. For me, it’s not just a subject—it’s a way of thinking that connects directly to my goals, my curiosity, and the path I’m building toward the future. And while it can be challenging at times, it also feels like an adventure—one equation at a time.

My mother woke up before sunrise every single day. Not because she wanted to — because she had to. In Lagos, the early morning belonged to the people who couldn't afford to lose it. She would press my school uniform the night before, leave breakfast covered on the stove, and be gone before I opened my eyes. I grew up understanding, without anyone explaining it to me, that love sometimes looks like an empty chair at the breakfast table. She raised me alone. My father was not in the picture, and there were no dramatic conversations about his absence — just the quiet reality of one woman carrying everything. One income stretched across school fees, rent, food, and whatever was left of her energy at the end of a twelve-hour day. We were not the poorest family I knew, but we were close enough to that edge that I never forgot it was there. Nigeria teaches you things that no classroom can. It teaches you that the lights may go out tonight and that you should have finished your homework while they were still on. It teaches you that patience is not a virtue — it is a survival skill. It teaches you that the people who make it are rarely the most talented; they are the most relentless. My mother was the most relentless person I have ever known, and I was watching her every day whether I realized it or not. The moment that changed how I understood myself came quietly, the way the most important moments often do. I was fourteen, sitting at our small kitchen table, helping my younger cousin with her arithmetic homework. She was stuck on the same problem she had been stuck on for twenty minutes, growing frustrated, ready to give up. I didn't get impatient. Something in me settled. I slowed down, drew it out step by step, and watched her face shift from confusion to understanding. When she finally got it, she looked up and said, "You explain it better than my teacher." I sat with those words for a long time. Not because of the compliment — but because of what I felt in that moment. I felt useful in a way that had nothing to do with what I had or didn't have. For most of my childhood, I had measured myself against absence: no father, no cushion, no guarantee of anything. That evening I realized I had been measuring myself against the wrong things entirely. What I had — patience built from watching my mother, discipline built from necessity, the ability to stay calm when someone else was struggling — those weren't consolation prizes for a hard upbringing. They were the upbringing. I am my mother's son. I know what it means to do more with less, to keep going when stopping would be easier, and to show up for people even when no one is watching. Growing up in a single-parent household in Nigeria did not give me a head start. It gave me something better: a standard. Every morning my mother left before sunrise, she was showing me what commitment looks like when it has no applause. I have been trying to live up to that standard ever since. I no longer see my upbringing as something to overcome. It is something I carry — not as weight, but as foundation.

The scoreboard read twelve points — our deficit with four minutes left in the third quarter. I stood at half-court during a timeout, hands on my knees, trying not to let my teammates see how rattled I was. Two weeks earlier I had been benched for the first time in my high-school career, and the coach's words still echoed: "You're playing like you're scared of making a mistake." He was right. I had become so focused on protecting my own statistics that I stopped being a point guard and started being a passenger. That benching was the lowest moment of my athletic life — and the most important one. I had always assumed that being a good teammate meant showing up, working hard, and not complaining. What I hadn't understood was that leadership at the guard position is a constant, active choice. A point guard decides who touches the ball, who gets to shine, and how the team responds when things go wrong. When I retreated into self-preservation, I took all of those decisions off the table. My teammates didn't get worse; I just stopped helping them get better. The week I spent on the bench, I watched every film session differently. I stopped asking what should I have done? and started asking what did my teammates need that I didn't give them? It changed everything I saw. I noticed how our center set better screens when he got a quick verbal acknowledgment from me. I saw how our shooting guard's release tightened when I hit him in rhythm rather than early. I realized I had teammates with quiet confidence — the kind that disappears if nobody sees it. When I earned my spot back, I came back with a simple commitment: I would play to make the people around me feel capable. Not because I stopped caring about winning — I cared more than ever — but because I finally understood that my job was to make five people better, not to prove that one person was good enough. Back to that timeout with four minutes left. Our coach drew up a play, but before we broke the huddle I looked at our center — a junior who rarely spoke but played with everything he had — and said, "I'm going to find you. Be ready." He nodded. The next two possessions I fed him in exactly the spot we had talked about in film. He scored both times. We went on a 14–2 run and won by two. I didn't score in those four minutes. I had four assists. It was the best I had ever played. What basketball has given me — beyond conditioning, beyond competition — is a clear picture of who I want to be in a room full of people working toward something hard. I want to be the person who notices what others need, who stays steady when the margin closes, and who is grateful for every role because every role matters. Those aren't skills I developed in spite of my worst moment as an athlete. They are the direct result of it. I am a better teammate, a more resilient student, and a more honest person because a coach had the patience to sit me down and tell me the truth. I carry that timeout into every group project, every late study night, every moment when the easier choice is to protect myself instead of serve the people beside me. The scoreboard always moves. The habits you build in the hard minutes are the ones that stay.

Failing Forward Until It Finally Worked I still remember the first time I failed Statistics in college. I thought it would be a one-time setback, but I was wrong. I ended up failing the class three separate times, and each time it felt worse than the last. Coming from a small town in Nigeria where Computer Science was something I had never even heard of, I didn’t have a roadmap. When I moved to the United States, I was already behind in both confidence and academics. Most of my summers were spent doing chores, helping my parents, and trying to figure out school on my own. While other students talked about internships or vacations, I was just trying to keep up. Computer Science became the subject that broke me the most. Statistics was worse—it wasn’t just difficult, it felt impossible at times. But I refused to quit, even when I failed the same course for the third time. Instead, I started treating every failure like data. I met with tutors, watched tutorials late at night, and rewrote my notes until the concepts finally made sense. I also formed small study groups with classmates who were struggling like me. Slowly, I started to improve, not because I was suddenly smart, but because I was consistent. That consistency is what eventually pushed me beyond school and into real-world tech problems. Today, I run my own DevOps company, and I still carry that same mindset into every challenge I face. I didn’t get here because I was the smartest in the room, but because I refused to stay down after failing. Every failure in Statistics taught me how to learn under pressure and keep going when things don’t make sense. That lesson is now the reason I don’t walk away from hard problems in technology or in life. If anything, failure became the signal that I am exactly where I need to grow. Now when I think about Computer Science, I don’t see it as a talent-based field, but as a discipline built on persistence. I remember nights where my code would not run and I would restart everything from scratch just to understand one bug. There were moments I wanted to quit, especially when classmates seemed to move faster and with less effort. But I learned to measure progress in persistence, not comparison. I stopped asking why it was hard and started asking what I still didn’t understand. That shift changed how I approached every subject, not just Statistics or programming. It also changed how I saw my background—not as a limitation, but as proof I could adapt. I built small projects on my own, often failing repeatedly, but each failure taught me something practical. Over time, those small wins turned into confidence that I could actually build systems that work. That is what eventually led me to start working in DevOps and building my own company. I still think about that version of me who failed Statistics three times and felt like giving up. He would not recognize the person I am now, but he would recognize the same stubborn refusal to quit. That refusal is the reason I am still building, still learning, and still pushing forward in technology. And it is the reason I believe failure is not the opposite of success, but part of it.

Love Island: The Reality Reset Challenge The most uncomfortable silence I can imagine isn’t after an argument—it’s when someone confidently says, “I know my partner better than anyone here,” and then slowly realizes they might not. That mix of confidence and doubt is what inspired this challenge. I call it The Reality Reset Challenge, and its goal is simple: test whether Islanders actually know each other, or just the version they’ve built in their heads. The challenge begins in the villa on a normal night. Everyone is laughing, relaxed, assuming it’s just another game. Then a text comes in: “Islanders, tonight your connection will be tested. Not by attraction—but by truth.” The energy shifts. People smile nervously and say, “This is easy, I know everything about my partner.” But that confidence doesn’t last. Phase 1: True or False (Explain Yourself) Islanders are split into two groups and shown statements about their partner. Examples: “Your partner avoids conflict even when upset.” “Your partner is more emotional than they show.” “Your partner remembers small details people forget.” They answer true or false—but must explain why. At first, it feels light. People joke and guess quickly. But during explanations, it gets serious. “I think it’s true… because I’ve seen it, but we never talked about it.” “I’m not sure, I just assumed that’s how they are.” That’s when it hits: a lot of their “knowledge” is assumption. Phase 2: The Version You Think You Know Each Islander is shown a version of their partner written like a dating profile. It includes traits like: “Very independent, struggles to open up emotionally” “Prefers fun over serious conversations” “Finds vulnerability difficult” Some is true. Some is exaggerated. Some is false. They are asked: “If this is how you met your partner on day one, would you still choose them?” The room goes quiet. It’s no longer about attraction—it’s about honesty. Phase 3: The Switch Islanders are paired with someone else’s partner for a structured task: Solve a timed puzzle Complete a communication challenge Make a decision under pressure It’s not romantic—it’s observational. People are awkward at first but slowly relax. Meanwhile, their partner watches from another room. No talking. Just watching. That silence makes everything feel heavier. Phase 4: The Firepit Reset Everyone returns to the firepit. No music, no distractions. They are asked: “Did anything change in how you see your partner?” “Do you feel closer or further away?” “What did you realize?” No interrupting is allowed. Each person speaks fully before replies. This forces real listening instead of reacting. Why This Challenge Matters Love Island moves fast, and connections are built on emotion and limited time. This challenge slows everything down and asks: how much of what you believe is real, and how much is assumption? It doesn’t exist to break couples. It exists to reveal truth. Because sometimes the biggest shock isn’t who you’re with. It’s realizing you never fully saw them.

The night the power went out during my exam prep, I remember my first reaction wasn’t panic—it was just silence. Then my little brother from another room said, “It’s gone again?” like he already knew the answer. My mom didn’t even look up. She just said, “Find light and continue. Time doesn’t stop for you.” That line stuck with me more than anything else that night. Growing up in Nigeria, challenge wasn’t something that showed up once in a while—it was part of everyday life. Power cuts, noise, limited space, and constant responsibilities at home all mixed into the background of trying to stay focused in school. I remember sitting at a small table after school, already tired, trying to finish math problems while hearing people outside calling out, pots clanging in the kitchen, and my mind drifting every few seconds. There were moments I would literally say out loud, “How am I supposed to concentrate like this?” And my cousin, who used to study with me sometimes, would laugh and reply, “Nobody is concentrating. You just do it anyway.” At first, I thought that was just people coping. But over time, I realized it was discipline. One night that really shaped me was when I was stuck on a physics problem. I had been trying it for almost an hour. The power had gone, my phone flashlight was dying, and I was getting frustrated. I remember saying, “This doesn’t even make sense anymore.” My older cousin looked at it for a few seconds and said, “You’re not stuck. You just stopped thinking step by step.” Then he literally took my pen, wrote the first line, and said, “Start here. Not from the end.” That moment changed how I approach everything. Not just school, but life. Because I realized most of my struggle wasn’t that I couldn’t do things—it was that I was overwhelmed by the whole picture at once. After that, I started breaking everything down. If something felt impossible, I’d slow it down until it didn’t feel like one big wall anymore, just smaller steps. Even at home, challenges were constant in different ways. There were days my mom would say, “We need to manage this week carefully,” and I’d understand that meant adjusting expectations, helping more, and being responsible without being told twice. You grow up quickly in environments like that. Not because you want to, but because you have to. But I don’t look at those experiences as just hardship anymore. They trained me. They trained me to stay calm under pressure. To focus even when conditions are not perfect. To keep going even when I’m not fully comfortable. And honestly, to stop waiting for the “right time” to do things. When I moved into a more structured environment later, the difference was obvious. I remember telling a friend, “You guys actually complain when Wi-Fi is slow?” and he laughed like I was joking. But to me, it showed something deeper—I had learned to function in environments where things didn’t always work smoothly, so I didn’t take stability for granted. That mindset has shaped how I see my future. I want to study electrical engineering because I’m interested in systems—how things work, and how they fail. But more than that, I want to build things that make life more reliable for people. I know what it feels like when basic systems aren’t stable, and that experience makes me want to be part of improving them. Even music connects to this. When I’m learning piano or bass, I still hear my cousin’s voice sometimes: “Start here. Not from the end.” It reminds me that progress is not about speed—it’s about structure, patience, and repetition. Looking back, the challenges I faced weren’t just obstacles. They were training grounds. They shaped how I think, how I work, and how I respond when things get difficult. And even now, when I feel overwhelmed, I hear my mom’s voice again: “Time doesn’t stop for you.” So I don’t stop either.

Most people don’t think twice before turning on a light. For me, growing up in Nigeria, it was never that simple. There were nights when the power would go out in the middle of studying, and everything would suddenly feel harder. Not just the darkness, but the pressure that came with it. School didn’t pause just because the lights did. I still had work to finish, expectations to meet, and responsibilities at home. I remember sitting there, frustrated, knowing I could either wait for things to get better or find a way to keep going. So I did. I found whatever light I could, stayed at the table, and worked through it, even when it wasn’t comfortable. That moment is a small example of what my upbringing was like. I didn’t always have access to the best resources or the easiest environment to succeed in. There were distractions, limitations, and times where I had to rely on myself to figure things out. It wasn’t perfect, but it taught me discipline early. I learned how to stay focused even when things around me weren’t, and how to keep pushing forward without waiting for ideal conditions. When I moved to the United States, I was introduced to opportunities that I didn’t have before—better resources, more structured systems, and more support. But instead of making me comfortable, it made me more aware. I understood what it meant to not have those things, so I started to take my education more seriously. I became more intentional with my time and more focused on what I want to build for my future. I plan to pursue electrical engineering because I want to be part of creating solutions that actually help people. Growing up, I experienced what it feels like when systems don’t always work the way they should. That’s why I’m interested in designing and improving technology that can make everyday life more reliable and accessible, especially for communities that face similar challenges. I don’t just want to understand how things work—I want to improve them. Outside of academics, music has also shaped who I am. Playing piano and bass has taught me patience and consistency. It’s also given me a way to express myself and connect with others. Whether I’m learning a new piece or creating something of my own, I’ve learned that growth takes time and effort—just like everything else. The biggest challenge I’ve faced has been learning how to succeed in environments where I didn’t always have the support or resources I needed. There were moments when I felt behind or unsure, but I didn’t let that define me. I adjusted, stayed disciplined, and kept working until I improved. In the future, I want to make a positive impact by using my skills in engineering to create practical solutions that improve access to technology. I also want to continue using music as a way to inspire and connect with people. For me, making an impact isn’t about doing one big thing—it’s about consistently building, improving, and helping others along the way. My experiences have taught me that where you start doesn’t have to limit where you go. What matters is how you respond, and what you choose to build from it.

I remember one night when the lights went out in the middle of everything. I had been sitting at a small table, trying to study, already tired from the day and aware of how much I still had to do. When the power cut, the room dropped into complete darkness. For a moment, I didn’t move. It wasn’t unusual—growing up in Nigeria, power outages were part of life—but that night it felt heavier. I had a deadline, responsibilities at home, and a quiet pressure to keep up, even when the conditions made it difficult. At home, things were not always stable. There were times when basic needs felt uncertain, and school was just one part of a much bigger picture. I wasn’t studying in a quiet, comfortable environment. There were distractions, limited space, and moments when I had to step away from my work to help out. It taught me early that you don’t always get the luxury of ideal conditions. Sometimes, you just have to keep going anyway. That night, instead of closing my notebook, I found a small source of light and went back to work. The pages looked different under that dim glow, and everything felt slower. I had to concentrate harder, reread more, and be patient with myself. I remember feeling frustrated—wondering why something as simple as studying had to feel so difficult. But at the same time, I knew that stopping wouldn’t make anything better. So I stayed with it. I worked through the confusion, line by line, until I finished what I could. That moment may seem small, but it reflects a larger pattern of what my upbringing demanded from me. I had to learn how to be disciplined without structure, focused without silence, and motivated without constant encouragement. There wasn’t always someone there to explain things step by step, so I learned how to figure things out on my own. I became comfortable with discomfort—whether that meant studying in challenging conditions or pushing through self-doubt when I felt behind. When I eventually moved to the United States, the contrast was clear. There were more resources, more support systems, and more opportunities. But instead of feeling relieved, I felt a sense of urgency. I knew what it was like to not have those advantages, so I couldn’t afford to waste them. The challenges I faced growing up didn’t disappear—they transformed into a mindset. I became more intentional with my time, more disciplined in my habits, and more aware of how much access can shape a person’s path. That experience continues to shape how I approach my future. As I plan to study electrical engineering, I know the path won’t be easy. There will be complex problems, long nights, and moments where I feel stuck. But I also know how to respond to those moments. I’ve already learned how to sit with difficulty instead of avoiding it. I’ve learned how to break problems down, stay patient, and keep working even when progress feels slow. More importantly, my upbringing has shaped my purpose. I don’t just want to succeed for myself—I want to create opportunities for others who come from similar backgrounds. I understand how much potential can be limited by lack of access, and I want to be part of changing that. Whether through technology, education, or mentorship, I want to build things that make it easier for someone else to keep going, even when their circumstances are challenging. Looking back, that night in the dark wasn’t just about finishing an assignment. It was about learning how to persist when things aren’t ideal. It was about choosing discipline over frustration, and effort over excuses. That lesson has stayed with me. Even now, whenever I face something difficult, I think back to that moment—not as something I overcame once, but as something that continues to guide me. It reminds me that I don’t need perfect conditions to move forward. I just need the willingness to keep going.

I still think about the kind of conversations we would have had if there had been more time. Not big, dramatic ones—just the everyday kind. The kind that slowly turn into ideas, and the ideas turn into plans. If I could start a business with my sibling, I think it would come from one of those conversations—something simple at first, but meaningful enough to grow into something real. We would build a business centered on music and mentorship—a creative space where people, especially young people, could come to express themselves and develop their skills. It wouldn’t just be a studio. It would be a place where someone could walk in unsure of themselves and leave feeling like they have a voice. There would be instruments, production equipment, and people willing to teach, but more importantly, there would be patience and understanding. I would take on the technical side—producing music, teaching others how to use equipment, and building the structure of the business. My sibling would be the heart of it. They had a way of connecting with people that made them feel seen and valued. That’s something you can’t teach, but it’s something that changes people. Together, we would balance each other—one focused on building, the other focused on reaching. The reason this business matters to me is because of what my sibling represented in my life. They were someone I could turn to without hesitation, someone who made things feel manageable even when they weren’t. Losing them made me realize how important that kind of presence is, and how many people go without it. So this business wouldn’t just be about music—it would be about creating that same sense of support for others. Every part of it would reflect that purpose. The way people are welcomed, the way they are taught, the way their ideas are taken seriously. It wouldn’t matter if someone was experienced or just starting out. What would matter is that they felt like they belonged. Starting this business would also be a way of holding on to something that feels like it ended too soon. It would turn memory into action. Instead of just remembering who my sibling was, I would be building something that carries their impact forward. Every person who finds confidence, every piece of music created, every moment of encouragement—it would all connect back to that. If I had the chance to start a business with my sibling, it wouldn’t just be about success. It would be about purpose. About creating something that reflects who they were and what they meant to me. And in that way, even if they’re not here, a part of them would still be present in everything we build.

I used to think being a “positive force in society” meant doing something large and widely recognized—creating groundbreaking technology or delivering a message that reaches millions. Over time, I’ve come to understand that impact is often much quieter. It exists in everyday actions, in the way we treat people, and in the consistency of how we show up. Right now, my impact is still developing, but it is intentional. I try to support the people around me in practical ways—helping classmates understand concepts, being present for friends, and sharing what I learn instead of keeping it to myself. Through music, whether it’s playing piano at church or working on my own ideas, I’ve found a way to express thoughts and emotions that aren’t always easy to put into words. Even when the audience is small, the act of creating and sharing still matters. It’s a way of contributing something genuine. My background has played a major role in shaping this mindset. Coming from a place where opportunities were limited, and then moving to the United States in search of better ones, has made me more aware of how access can shape a person’s future. Because of that, I try to uplift others whenever I can—not in a performative way, but in a real and grounded way. Sometimes that means encouraging someone who doubts themselves, or offering help without expecting anything in return. Looking ahead, I want to expand that impact. I plan to study electrical engineering because I’m interested in building systems and technologies that solve real problems. I want to create things that improve access and make everyday life better, especially for people who might not always have the same resources. At the same time, I want to continue growing as a musician, using music as a way to connect with others, teach, and create spaces where people feel understood. Ultimately, I hope to combine both paths—innovation and expression—to empower others. At the same time, current social norms influence how I think about making a difference. There is a strong emphasis on visibility—on being seen, recognized, and validated through platforms where impact is often measured by attention. This can create pressure to present actions rather than simply live them. It can make meaningful contributions feel less significant if they are not publicly acknowledged. However, these same social norms have also increased awareness. People are more informed about social issues and more willing to speak up, which creates opportunities for change. Because of this, being a positive force today requires more than just good intentions. It requires awareness, critical thinking, and a willingness to listen and adapt. I don’t see myself as someone who has fully figured this out. I’m still learning, still growing, and still refining my purpose. But I understand that being a positive force is not defined by scale or recognition. It is defined by consistency, intention, and the ability to contribute in ways that genuinely help others. If I can continue to build on that—both now and in the future—then I believe I am moving in the right direction.

I come from a background that taught me early how to move with intention. Nothing was guaranteed, and a lot of the opportunities I’ve had were things I had to work toward, not things that were simply handed to me. That reality shaped how I approach challenges—I learned to be resourceful, to stay patient, and to keep going even when the path wasn’t clear. Being from a Nigerian background has also played a major role in who I am. It gave me a strong sense of identity and pride, but also responsibility. When I moved to the United States, I had to adjust to a new environment while carrying my roots with me. That transition wasn’t always easy. At times, I felt the difference in how I was perceived—through my accent, my background, or assumptions people made before they got to know me. Those moments could have made me shrink, but instead, they pushed me to grow. I focused on improving, on staying consistent, and on letting my effort speak for itself. Through it all, music and school became grounding forces in my life. Playing piano and bass isn’t just something I do—it’s where I find focus, discipline, and a sense of expression that words don’t always capture. In school, especially in courses like AP Calculus AB, I’ve learned how to break down complex problems and approach them step by step. That process reflects how I try to live my life: one challenge at a time, with patience and persistence. Looking ahead, I plan to pursue electrical engineering, driven by my curiosity about how systems work and how I can be part of building things that make a difference. I want to combine that with my interest in music in some way—whether that’s through audio technology, sound systems, or tools that support creativity. I’m drawn to the idea of creating something that connects logic and creativity, structure and expression. This scholarship would make a meaningful impact on my journey. Financial limitations have always been a factor in how I plan for the future, and this support would ease that burden. It would allow me to focus more on my education and growth instead of constantly worrying about the cost of continuing my path. It would also give me the freedom to take advantage of more opportunities—academically and personally—that help me become better prepared for the future I’m working toward. More than just financial support, this scholarship represents momentum. It’s an opportunity to keep building on the foundation I’ve worked hard to create. It would help me stay focused on my goals while continuing to grow into someone who can give back and make a positive impact. I want to use my education, my experiences, and my background to contribute something meaningful—and this scholarship would help me take that next step forward.

My academic goal is to build a strong foundation in electrical engineering while continuing to grow in music as both a craft and a form of expression. I’ve always been curious about how things work beneath the surface—how energy moves, how systems interact, and how small changes can create big effects. In school, especially through AP Calculus AB, I’ve learned to appreciate the patterns behind complex problems, and I want to carry that same mindset into engineering. I’m drawn to the idea of building and understanding systems that don’t just exist on paper, but actually function in the real world. At the same time, music is a major part of how I understand myself and the world around me. Playing piano and bass has taught me patience, discipline, and timing—skills that translate far beyond music itself. It’s where I’ve learned to listen closely, not just to sound, but to detail, to rhythm, and to people. Professionally, I want to find ways to connect these two paths—whether that’s working with audio technology, designing systems that enhance music production, or creating tools that make it easier for others to express themselves creatively. Giving back to my community has shaped how I see success. For me, it’s not just about reaching goals—it’s about how many people you bring along with you. I’ve helped others when they struggled, shared what I’ve learned, and tried to be someone people can rely on. Even small moments—explaining a concept, offering encouragement, or simply showing up—can make a difference more than we realize. Growing up, I also became more aware of how different experiences can shape opportunity. Not everyone has the same starting point, and that understanding has stayed with me. It’s made me more intentional about how I move through the world. I don’t just want to succeed; I want to make sure that my success creates space for others as well. That perspective has inspired me to think bigger than myself. Whether through engineering or music, I want to build something that lasts—something that connects, supports, and uplifts others. I want my work to feel like it has a purpose beyond me, like it contributes to something larger. In the end, my goals are about connection: connecting ideas, connecting systems, and connecting with people. I want to keep learning, keep creating, and keep finding ways to turn my curiosity into something meaningful—not just for myself, but for the world around me.

I learned early that being different can feel loud, even when you’re trying to stay quiet. Growing up, my background and accent didn’t always blend in with the room. Sometimes it was subtle—people asking me to repeat myself, or conversations slowing down like they were trying to “translate” me in real time. Other times, it was more direct—being treated like I didn’t quite belong, or like I had something to prove before I even spoke. At first, it made me second-guess myself. I started paying close attention to how I said things, replaying conversations in my head, wondering if I needed to “fix” the way I sounded just to be taken seriously. There were moments when that pressure felt heavy. It’s hard to focus on your goals when you’re also carrying the weight of how people perceive you. But over time, I realized something important: I couldn’t control how people heard me, but I could control how I showed up. Instead of shrinking, I started leaning into who I am. I focused on improving my communication, not changing my identity. I put more energy into my work, my skills, and my consistency. Whether it was in school, music, or personal goals, I made sure my effort spoke clearly—even when my voice was still being understood. Slowly, I noticed a shift. Confidence didn’t come from being perfectly accepted; it came from knowing I was putting in real effort and staying true to myself. That experience shaped me in a big way. It taught me resilience, but also empathy. I became more aware of how small comments or assumptions can affect someone, and I try to be more intentional about how I treat others because of that. It also strengthened my curiosity—because instead of letting differences isolate me, I started asking questions, learning more, and using those differences as a source of growth rather than limitation. If I could give advice to someone facing the same circumstances, I’d say this: don’t rush to erase what makes you different. It’s easy to feel like you need to sound, act, or be like everyone else to be accepted—but your background is not something to hide. It’s something that adds depth to who you are. Focus on building your skills, speaking with confidence, and letting your work speak for you. The right people will listen beyond the surface. And most importantly, don’t let one moment—or even many moments—define your worth. People may misinterpret you, misunderstand you, or overlook you at times. But that doesn’t change your ability, your value, or where you’re capable of going. Keep going anyway. Over time, your presence becomes undeniable—not because you changed who you are, but because you refused to stop being yourself.

I’ve always been drawn to things that require both logic and imagination. Computer science feels like the bridge between those two worlds. My goal is to build a strong foundation in software development, problem-solving, and systems thinking, with the long-term aim of creating technology that is both practical and meaningful. I’m especially interested in areas like software engineering and embedded systems, where code directly interacts with the physical world. As someone who is pursuing electrical engineering, I’m curious about how hardware and software can work together to create real-world solutions—whether that’s through smart devices, music technology, or systems that improve everyday life. At the same time, I have goals outside of computer science that shape who I am. Music is one of the biggest. Playing instruments like piano and bass has taught me patience, timing, and discipline. More importantly, it has shown me how powerful it is to create something that connects with people. Whether I’m performing or just practicing, music gives me a sense of expression that feels personal and honest. I also want to continue growing as a person who stays grounded—someone who remembers where they came from and uses their opportunities to give back, especially to communities that may not have access to the same resources. My curiosity drives both of these paths. I’m the type of person who doesn’t just want to use technology—I want to understand how it works and how it can be improved. I find myself asking questions like: How can systems be made more efficient? How can technology support creativity instead of limiting it? How can I take what I learn and apply it in a way that matters beyond just a classroom setting? In the future, I see myself combining these interests in a way that feels natural. One idea that excites me is building tools that support music production or live performance—software or devices that make it easier for artists to create, experiment, and share their work. I’m also interested in the idea of working on accessible technology, especially for students or communities with limited resources. If I can use my background to help create tools that make learning or creativity more accessible, that would be meaningful to me. Ultimately, my goals are connected by a single idea: growth through creation. Whether I’m writing code, playing music, or solving an engineering problem, I want to be building something that didn’t exist before. I want to stay curious, keep learning, and keep pushing myself into spaces where I’m not always comfortable—because that’s where real progress happens.

I am someone shaped by both pressure and purpose. Growing up, I learned early that resources don’t define ambition—how you respond to limitations does. There were moments when things felt out of reach, but instead of seeing that as the end of the road, I treated it as a reason to get creative, to figure things out, and to keep moving forward anyway. Music is a big part of who I am. When I sit at a piano or play bass, it’s more than just sound—it’s where I process everything I don’t always say out loud. It’s also where discipline meets expression. Preparing for performances or events like beat battles taught me how to stay composed under pressure and trust the work I’ve put in, even when things don’t go perfectly. What really defines me is my mindset. I don’t back away when something gets difficult; I lean into it. I ask questions, I learn, and I adjust. I’ve come to value growth over comfort and progress over perfection. To me, being “me” means staying grounded in where I come from while continuing to push toward where I want to go—step by step, no matter how long it takes.

One movie that left a lasting mark on me is Whiplash, directed by Damien Chazelle. I first watched it on Netflix, expecting a typical music film. Instead, I got something that felt like a rollercoaster—intense, uncomfortable at times, but strangely inspiring. It made me laugh, tense up, and reflect on my own journey with music in a way I didn’t expect. The story of Andrew Neiman hit close to home. His obsession with becoming great reminded me of my own experiences playing piano at church. Sunday mornings aren’t exactly forgiving—there’s no “let me try that again” button mid-service. I’ve had moments where my fingers felt like they were moving faster than my brain could keep up, and I’d think, “Okay… if I mess this up, at least I’ll have a very memorable sermon for the wrong reasons.” But those moments taught me focus. Every practice session, every repetition, was a step toward playing with confidence instead of fear. Watching Andrew push himself under the pressure of his instructor reminded me of the pressure I felt when I attended the SoCal Beat Battle 2025. Turning in my beat felt like sending a piece of my brain out into the world for judgment. I remember sitting there, probably overthinking every kick, snare, and melody like it was life-or-death. It was less “just a beat” and more “this represents everything I’ve learned so far—no pressure.” I refined it over and over, tweaking small details like a perfectionist, thinking, “One more change and it’ll be perfect.” Spoiler: it never feels perfect, but you send it anyway. What makes Whiplash so impactful is how it blends intensity with purpose. There’s a kind of wild, almost reckless determination in Andrew’s journey. While I wasn’t bleeding at the piano (thankfully), I understood the idea of pushing past comfort zones. Growth doesn’t happen when things are easy—it happens when you’re slightly stressed, slightly unsure, but still showing up. That’s exactly how I felt preparing for that beat battle and playing for church—balancing nerves with determination. At the same time, the movie doesn’t pretend that relentless ambition comes without consequences. It made me think about balance in my own life. Sure, I want to improve and get better, but I also don’t want to lose the joy that made me start in the first place. Playing piano at church isn’t just about performance—it’s about connection, expression, and sometimes, trying not to mess up the transition while keeping a straight face. That balance matters just as much as discipline. In the end, Whiplash stuck with me because it felt real in a strange, exaggerated way. It showed me that passion can drive you to incredible heights, but it also reminded me that the journey should still feel meaningful. Whether I’m playing piano on a Sunday morning or crafting a beat late at night, I’m learning that growth comes from effort, resilience, and a little bit of humor.

The first time I opened up a broken speaker, I wasn’t trying to fix it—I just wanted to understand why something that once made music had suddenly gone silent. Growing up in Nigeria, where resources were limited and replacing things wasn’t always an option, I learned early on to be curious, patient, and resourceful. That curiosity didn’t just teach me how things worked—it taught me how to keep going, even when things felt uncertain. I am currently a high school student in the United States, but my journey here began in a much different environment. I come from a low-income background in Nigeria, where opportunities were scarce and access to technology was limited. Moving to the U.S. was a major turning point in my life. It meant leaving behind familiarity for the chance at something greater, and it gave me a clearer sense of purpose: to take advantage of every opportunity in front of me and build a future that once felt out of reach. In school, I’ve developed a strong interest in electrical engineering. I’m fascinated by how systems work—how something as small as a circuit can power devices that shape our daily lives. At the same time, music has become a major part of who I am. I play bass guitar and experiment with music production, blending creativity with technical skill. For me, music is more than sound—it’s a way to express stories when words fall short. Outside the classroom, I stay involved in my community through my church. I play music during services and help with weekly maintenance around the facility. These responsibilities have taught me discipline, teamwork, and humility. Serving in this way has shown me that impact often comes from consistency—showing up and giving your best effort. Coming from a background with limited resources has shaped how I approach challenges. I rely on self-learning, determination, and creativity to grow. Whether it’s watching tutorials, practicing, or learning through trial and error, I’ve learned to work with what I have and keep pushing forward. After high school, I plan to pursue a degree in electrical engineering, with the goal of creating technology that improves everyday life. I also hope to continue developing my passion for music production, combining both interests in meaningful ways. If I could start my own charity, it would focus on students like me—young people with big dreams but limited access to resources. Its mission would be to provide technical and creative opportunities to underserved communities, both in the U.S. and in places like Nigeria. I would want to serve students who are curious but lack the tools to explore their potential. The charity would offer hands-on workshops in electronics, music production, and digital skills, along with mentorship programs to guide students toward real opportunities. Volunteers would teach, mentor, and help students build projects, while also helping distribute donated equipment like instruments and laptops so students can continue learning beyond the classroom. To me, this mission is personal. I know what it feels like to have potential but limited access, and I want to help create that opportunity for someone else—because sometimes, one chance can change everything.

The first time I truly understood what electricity could do, it wasn’t from a classroom lesson—it was from watching something small come to life because of a connection I made. That moment stayed with me. It made me realize that even with limited tools, something meaningful can still be created. That idea has shaped how I approach everything in my life. I come from a background where resources haven’t always been abundant, and that reality has influenced how I move. I’ve learned to make the most out of what I have, to stay patient, and to keep going even when the path isn’t clear. Moving from Nigeria to the United States added another layer to that journey. It meant adjusting to a new school system, new expectations, and a different way of thinking. At times, it felt like I was always trying to catch up. But instead of letting that discourage me, it pushed me to work harder and become more intentional about my goals. There were moments when I questioned whether I was on the right path, especially when things felt overwhelming or out of reach. But I’ve learned that resilience isn’t about having everything figured out—it’s about continuing anyway. I’ve had to teach myself how to navigate challenges, ask questions, and keep moving forward even when I didn’t have all the answers or resources others might have had. Despite those challenges, I’ve stayed focused on growth. Whether it’s through my academics, music, or personal discipline, I’ve learned to value consistency over perfection. Playing music, especially piano and bass, has given me an outlet to express myself and stay grounded. It’s also taught me patience—learning a piece note by note is not so different from building a future step by step. As I pursue a career in electrical engineering, I carry both my struggles and my determination with me. I don’t take this path lightly. I know what it means to have limited resources, and that is exactly why I am committed to succeeding. I want to become an engineer who not only builds systems, but understands the importance of access—access to power, to opportunity, and to innovation. I want to help create solutions that make life easier and more sustainable for people, especially those who come from backgrounds like mine. My goal is not just to succeed personally, but to make an impact. I want to be someone who proves that where you start does not determine where you end up. I want to use my career to open doors—for myself and for others who may feel like they’re starting with less. I may not have had every resource, but I have something just as powerful—drive, resilience, and a clear purpose. And I intend to use all of it to build a future that matters.

“Kindness in Action” - Describe an act of kindness, support you offered someone. Why was that moment important? It wasn’t a big, dramatic moment—no audience, no recognition. Just a regular afternoon after church when everyone had already left. I noticed one of the older members sitting alone, taking longer than usual to gather their things. Most people probably wouldn’t have thought twice, but something about it didn’t feel right to ignore. I walked over and asked if they needed help. At first, they smiled and said they were fine—but it was the kind of “fine” that really means, “I don’t want to bother anyone.” So I stayed anyway. I helped carry their things, walked them to their car, and we ended up talking for a while longer than I expected. What started as a simple favor turned into a real conversation. They shared how difficult it had been lately, feeling overlooked and alone even in a place meant for community. That moment stuck with me—not because of what I did, but because of how small it was. It didn’t require anything special, just attention and a willingness to pause. I realized kindness isn’t always about grand gestures. Sometimes it’s about noticing what others miss and choosing not to walk past it. Since then, I’ve tried to approach people differently. Whether it’s through helping around my church, playing music, or just being present, I’ve learned that support doesn’t have to be loud to matter. That moment reminded me that being there for someone—even briefly—can make them feel seen. And sometimes, that’s exactly what they need. “Boldly, Unapologetically Me” - Tell us a time you resisted pressure to conform and chose to be your self. Moving from Nigeria to the United States was not just a change in location—it was a complete shift in how I experienced school, communication, and even confidence. In Nigeria, school had a certain rhythm: structure, discipline, and a clear expectation of how students should engage. When I arrived in the U.S. school system, everything felt more open, more flexible—but also less familiar. At first, that freedom was more confusing than exciting. I remember sitting in class early on, trying to adjust to a different way of learning. Teachers encouraged participation in a way that felt new to me, and students spoke with a level of ease that I wasn’t used to. I hesitated to speak up, not because I didn’t know the answers, but because I was still learning how to express myself in this new environment. It felt like everyone else already understood the unwritten rules, and I was trying to catch up. There were moments where I felt pressure to blend in—whether it was adjusting my accent, my approach to conversations, or even how I carried myself. But over time, I realized that trying to erase where I come from didn’t make me fit in better—it just made me feel less like myself. So instead of hiding my background, I began to embrace it. Coming from Nigeria has shaped the way I think about discipline, respect, and resilience. At the same time, being in the U.S. has pushed me to become more expressive and independent. Balancing both has helped me grow into someone who is not afraid to stand out while still adapting to new environments. Choosing to stay true to myself while navigating a new culture hasn’t always been easy, but it has been worth it. It taught me that I don’t have to choose between where I come from and where I’m going—I can carry both, and let them shape who I become.

Money never introduced itself to me politely. It didn’t arrive as a lesson or a neat definition in a textbook. It showed up quietly, in the background of real life—at a table where a family member paused, stared at a bill a little too long, and made a decision that didn’t need explaining. That moment stayed with me. It taught me something no class had yet: money is less about numbers and more about choices—sometimes uncomfortable ones. For most of my life, financial education felt like a language everyone else somehow already understood. Words like “interest,” “credit,” and “loans” sounded important, but also distant, like they belonged to adults with everything figured out. I didn’t have a structured guide or a step-by-step introduction. Instead, I learned the way a lot of people do—by piecing things together. A little from observation, a little from trial and error, and a lot from late-night searches trying to decode terms that probably could’ve been explained in simpler ways. Everything changed when college became real. Financial aid forms weren’t just paperwork—they were decisions about my future. I had to quickly learn the difference between money you’re given and money you owe back, and that distinction felt very important, very fast. Grants felt like relief. Loans felt like responsibility waiting for me in the future. It was like realizing that every “yes” now had an echo later. Without consistent guidance, I’ve had to become resourceful. I’ve spent time searching for scholarships, comparing options, and asking questions—even when I felt like I should already know the answers. It hasn’t always been smooth. There were moments where everything felt confusing at once, like trying to assemble something without instructions. But over time, I’ve learned that not knowing isn’t the problem—staying passive is. So I chose to engage, even if it meant learning slowly. What I’ve come to understand is that financial education isn’t just about money—it’s about mindset. It’s about thinking ahead, making intentional decisions, and understanding that small choices add up. As I work toward a future in electrical engineering, I know my goals aren’t just about building circuits or solving technical problems. I want to build stability. I want to make sure that when I earn money, I know how to manage it, grow it, and use it in ways that create opportunities—not stress. Looking forward, I plan to apply what I learn with purpose. I want to minimize unnecessary debt, build credit carefully, and eventually explore investing—not as a trend, but as a long-term strategy. More importantly, I want to share what I learn. Financial knowledge can feel gatekept, like something you’re expected to already understand. I want to help break that cycle, even if it’s just by explaining something simply to someone who feels just as lost as I once did. I didn’t grow up with a perfect understanding of money. I grew up watching it, questioning it, and slowly learning how it works. And while I may not have started with all the answers, I’ve built something more important: the willingness to figure them out.

Pursuing higher education without family or federal financial support has required me to think differently about responsibility, independence, and planning for the future. Coming from Nigeria, access to consistent financial support for education is not always guaranteed. My family has faced financial limitations that make it difficult to fully cover the cost of higher education, and options like FAFSA are not available to me in the same way they are for students in the United States. Because of this, I have had to take a more independent approach to preparing for my education and future. Growing up in an environment where resources were limited taught me early that if I want something meaningful, I need to be intentional and disciplined in how I pursue it. Nothing has been handed to me, and that reality has shaped the way I approach my goals. I have learned to be patient, to plan ahead, and to stay committed even when progress feels slow. These lessons have become a core part of who I am. One of the most impactful challenges I have experienced is living in a place where electricity is not consistent. Power outages are a regular part of daily life, and they affect everything from studying to completing simple tasks. Instead of letting this discourage me, I learned how to adapt. I found ways to continue my work despite the limitations, which strengthened my problem-solving skills and resilience. These experiences also helped me develop a strong sense of independence. I became used to relying on myself to find solutions and keep moving forward, even in difficult situations. Financial independence has also influenced how I view responsibility. I understand that pursuing higher education is not just a personal goal—it is a long-term investment that requires careful planning and sacrifice. Because I do not have guaranteed financial support, I have had to be more mindful of how I prepare for the future. This has made me more focused, more organized, and more committed to making the most of every opportunity I have. These experiences have also shaped my future goals. I want to pursue a career in electrical engineering because I have seen firsthand how much access to reliable electricity can impact a community. I have experienced the effects of power instability, and that has motivated me to be part of a solution. I want to use my education to help design and improve systems that can provide consistent and reliable power, especially in areas that need it most. My background has taught me that independence does not mean doing everything alone—it means taking ownership of your path and working toward your goals with determination. It has also shown me the importance of staying focused, even when circumstances are challenging. While I may not have the same financial support as some others, I have gained something equally valuable: resilience, discipline, and a strong sense of purpose. This journey has not been easy, but it has prepared me to succeed. I am committed to continuing my education, growing my skills, and using what I learn to make a positive impact. My experiences have shaped not only how I approach my education, but also how I plan to contribute to the world in the future.

Growing up, I quickly learned that stability is not something you can take for granted. In my daily life, one of the biggest challenges has been the lack of reliable electricity. In Nigeria, power outages are a normal part of life, and they affect everything—from studying to completing simple tasks. There were many nights when I had to adjust my plans, study under limited light, or pause my work until the power returned. These moments taught me patience, adaptability, and how to stay focused even when conditions are not ideal. Alongside these challenges, financial struggles have also played a major role in shaping who I am. Pursuing education requires resources that are not always easy to access. I have had to be intentional about my goals, understanding that every opportunity comes with sacrifice and careful planning. At times, this has meant making difficult choices and learning how to manage with what is available. Instead of discouraging me, these experiences have strengthened my determination and taught me discipline. These challenges have influenced the way I view my future. Experiencing unreliable electricity firsthand made me more aware of how deeply it affects everyday life. It is not just an inconvenience—it impacts education, limits productivity, and creates barriers to opportunity. This is one of the main reasons I want to pursue electrical engineering. I want to be part of the solution to these problems, helping to design systems that provide reliable and accessible power to communities like mine. Financial support is an important part of achieving this goal. Higher education comes with significant costs, and without support, it can be difficult to fully focus on my studies and growth. This scholarship would ease that burden by reducing the financial pressure on me and my family. It would allow me to dedicate more time to my education, develop my technical skills, and take advantage of opportunities that prepare me for my future career. Instead of worrying about financial limitations, I would be able to focus on building a strong foundation for my future. More importantly, this scholarship would bring me closer to my long-term goal of making a meaningful impact. I want to use my education to contribute to improving electrical systems and helping expand access to reliable energy. I have seen firsthand how much of a difference electricity can make in people’s lives. It supports education, strengthens communities, and creates opportunities for growth. I want to be part of creating that kind of impact. Overall, the challenges I have faced have shaped me into someone who is resilient, focused, and driven. They have taught me how to keep moving forward even when things are difficult and how to stay committed to my goals. This scholarship would not only support my education but also help me continue working toward a future where I can give back and create positive change.

I remember sitting in the dark more times than I can count, realizing how much of daily life depends on something as simple as a steady flow of electricity. Where I come from in Nigeria, power outages are not rare—they are a part of everyday life. That experience shaped the way I see the world. It showed me how something most people take for granted can have a major impact on education, safety, and opportunity. In that moment, I didn’t just see a problem—I saw a reason to become part of the solution. Growing up in that environment made me naturally curious about how electrical systems work and how they could be improved. I started paying attention to generators, wiring, and alternative power sources, asking questions about why the system is the way it is and how it could be better. That curiosity developed into a deeper interest in electrical engineering. To me, this field isn’t just about circuits and equations—it’s about solving real problems that affect real communities. Electrical engineering stands out to me because of its potential to create impact at a large scale. In a place where electricity is unreliable, engineers have the opportunity to design systems that can change daily life. Whether it’s improving power distribution, developing more efficient energy systems, or working with renewable energy solutions, electrical engineers can directly contribute to stability and progress. I want to be someone who helps bring reliable power to communities that need it, because I’ve seen firsthand how much of a difference it can make. Lack of electricity affects more than just convenience—it affects education, healthcare, and opportunity. Students struggle to study at night, businesses face interruptions, and hospitals rely on backup systems that are not always dependable. Because I’ve experienced this environment, I feel a strong responsibility to contribute to improving it. I don’t want to just understand how systems work—I want to help design systems that work better for everyone. My experience with music has also helped shape my mindset. When I play or produce music, I focus on structure, timing, and detail. Every sound matters, just like every component matters in an electrical system. That same attention to detail and patience is something I plan to bring into my engineering career. Both music and engineering require creativity and precision, and I see myself combining those skills to solve complex problems. Through electrical engineering, I plan to make a positive impact by focusing on practical solutions that improve access to reliable power. I want to contribute to systems that strengthen communities, support development, and create opportunities for people to grow. Whether I am working on energy systems, infrastructure, or new technologies, my goal is to be part of something that makes a real difference. In the end, my motivation comes from experience. Living in a place where electricity is inconsistent has shown me exactly why this field matters. It is not just about building systems—it is about building a better future. And through electrical engineering, I hope to be part of that change.

I would describe myself as someone driven by curiosity and purpose. I’ve always been interested in understanding how things work, whether that’s through technology or music. Playing and producing music has taught me discipline, creativity, and patience—how small adjustments can completely change the outcome. At the same time, my interest in computer science has grown because it challenges me to think critically and solve real problems. I plan to pursue a career in data science, where I can turn information into meaningful insights and contribute to decisions that impact people’s lives. This scholarship would make a significant difference in helping me reach that goal. Pursuing higher education comes with financial challenges, and having this support would allow me to focus more on developing my skills, gaining experience, and preparing for my future career. It would give me the opportunity to invest in my education without constantly worrying about financial limitations. More importantly, it would serve as motivation—reminding me that someone believes in my potential and is willing to support my journey. Losing my sister changed my life in ways I didn’t fully understand at first. She was more than just family—she was someone who made everything feel steady. She had a presence that filled the room, not in a loud way, but in a way that made you feel safe. She knew how to make people laugh, how to listen, and how to make even ordinary moments feel important. She had her own passions and interests, and she carried them with a quiet confidence that I always admired. After she passed, everything felt different. It wasn’t just the big moments that hurt—it was the small ones. The silence where her voice used to be. The absence in everyday routines. It felt like life kept moving, but a part of mine had stopped. There were moments when it didn’t feel real, like I was just waiting for things to go back to how they were. But they didn’t. That loss forced me to grow in ways I wasn’t prepared for. I had to learn how to keep going while carrying something heavy that no one else could fully see. It changed how I think about time, about opportunities, and about what really matters. I became more aware of how important it is to make the most of what I have, because I know how quickly things can change. Even though she’s gone, her impact on me is still here. The way she treated people, the way she showed up, and the way she lived her life continues to influence how I move forward. In many ways, my goals are no longer just about me—they’re also about honoring her. I want to build a future that reflects the values she showed me: effort, resilience, and care for others. This scholarship wouldn’t just support my education—it would help me continue moving forward with purpose. It would allow me to turn both my passion and my experiences into something meaningful, and to create a future that carries both my ambitions and her memory with me.

I don’t think my interest in computer science started with a single moment—it built over time. It came from curiosity. I’ve always been the type of person who doesn’t just use things, but questions them. How does this work? Why does it respond this way? What’s happening behind the screen that I can’t see? Computer science feels like the place where those questions finally have answers—and where I get to be the one creating them. To me, computer science isn’t just coding. It’s a way of thinking. It’s learning how to take something complicated and break it down until it makes sense. That same mindset shows up in other parts of my life too. When I play music, especially producing or experimenting with sounds, I’m layering different elements, adjusting patterns, and trying to create something that feels right. Computer science feels similar—except instead of sounds, I’m working with logic, structure, and systems. Both require patience, creativity, and attention to detail. The area I see myself working in is data science, because it feels like solving a puzzle that actually matters. We live in a world full of data—every click, every search, every decision leaves behind a trace. But raw data by itself doesn’t say much. It’s just numbers sitting there. A data scientist gives those numbers a voice. They turn patterns into stories and information into understanding. What draws me in is the idea of asking questions that don’t have obvious answers. Why do people behave a certain way online? What trends are forming before anyone notices them? How can we use past information to predict what’s coming next? Data science sits right at that intersection of curiosity and logic. It’s not just about being good at math or coding—it’s about thinking deeply and being willing to explore the unknown. I also like that data science has real impact. The work isn’t isolated—it connects to real decisions, real people, and real outcomes. Whether it’s improving technology, helping businesses understand their users, or even contributing to solutions in healthcare or the environment, the possibilities feel meaningful. I want to be in a field where what I do doesn’t just exist on a screen, but actually influences the world around me. At the end of the day, computer science inspires me because it gives me the tools to understand and create at the same time. And data science, specifically, feels like the perfect fit because it combines everything I’m drawn to: curiosity, problem-solving, and the chance to turn something complex into something clear. It’s the kind of work where I won’t just be following answers—I’ll be discovering them.

Giving back within my community has shaped the way I see responsibility, purpose, and connection to others. Serving in my church, especially through playing music, has shown me that my skills are not just for personal growth—they can impact people in meaningful ways. When I play during services, I’m contributing to an environment that helps others feel encouraged, reflective, and connected. It’s a reminder that even something as creative as music can be a form of service. Beyond music, helping with the weekly maintenance of the church facility and campus has taught me discipline and consistency. These tasks aren’t always noticed, but they are essential to keeping everything running smoothly. Whether I’m cleaning, setting up, or maintaining equipment, I’ve learned that every role matters. That experience has shaped my mindset to value all types of work and to take pride in contributing, even when the task is behind the scenes. Over time, this has helped me become more reliable, detail-oriented, and aware of how my actions affect others. Giving back has also taught me empathy. Being in a position to help others—whether through service, support, or simply being present—has made me more understanding of people’s needs and perspectives. It’s shown me that small actions can have a big impact, and that consistency in serving others builds stronger communities. These experiences have not only shaped my character but also strengthened my desire to continue serving in the future. As I move forward, my college educational goals are centered around pursuing a degree in electrical engineering. I’ve always been interested in how systems work, especially in areas related to power, circuits, and technology. I want to build a strong foundation in math, science, and problem-solving so I can develop the skills needed to succeed in this field. Electrical engineering appeals to me because it combines logic, creativity, and real-world application—allowing me to create solutions that can directly improve people’s lives. Alongside my technical studies, I also want to continue developing my interest in music and production. I see this as a way to stay connected to creativity while also exploring how technology and sound can work together. I’m especially interested in how engineering principles can be applied to music, whether through sound systems, recording technology, or audio design. My goal in college is not only to earn a degree, but to grow as a person—becoming someone who is skilled, thoughtful, and capable of contributing to others. I want to use my education as a tool to open opportunities, but also as a way to continue giving back to my community. Ultimately, I hope to combine my academic knowledge, technical skills, and commitment to service into a career that allows me to make a meaningful and positive impact.

I’ve always been the kind of person who wants to understand how things work—not just use them, but actually break them down, rebuild them, and make them better. That curiosity started when I was younger, messing around with instruments and simple electronics, and it’s grown into a real interest in pursuing a hands-on, technical career in the trades. Music played a big role in shaping that mindset. When I first started playing piano at eight years old, I didn’t think of it as anything more than learning songs. But over time, I became more interested in what was happening behind the sound—how different notes worked together, how equipment affected tone, and how everything connected. That curiosity eventually led me to music production and playing bass in my school’s jazz band, where I learned not just how to perform, but how to listen, adjust, and work as part of a system. In a lot of ways, that experience is similar to the trades: you have to understand your role, pay attention to details, and contribute to something bigger than yourself. As I got older, that same curiosity expanded into technology and engineering. I became more interested in electrical systems—how power flows, how circuits are built, and how everyday devices actually function. The trades appeal to me because they turn that curiosity into real, tangible work. Instead of just learning concepts, you’re applying them in ways that directly impact people’s lives. Whether it’s wiring a building, troubleshooting a system, or building something from the ground up, there’s a sense of purpose in knowing your work matters and is physically present in the world. For my future career, I want to build a strong foundation in a skilled trade, especially something related to electrical work. I see it as both a practical and meaningful path—one that allows me to develop real expertise while also opening doors to larger opportunities, like electrical engineering or starting my own projects or business. I like the idea of being able to work with my hands, solve problems in real time, and continue learning as technology evolves. At the same time, I want to combine my technical skills with my passion for music. In the future, I can see myself working on projects that connect both worlds—like building or improving audio equipment, designing better sound systems, or creating spaces where people can experience music in new ways. That combination reflects who I am: someone who values both creativity and precision. Ultimately, my goal is to create a career where I’m constantly learning, building, and contributing. The trades offer a path that is honest, challenging, and impactful, and that’s exactly what I’m looking for. I don’t just want a job—I want to develop skills that I can carry with me for life, while doing work that I can be proud of every day.

Compassion didn’t arrive in my life as a big, life-changing moment—it showed up quietly, in the way someone chose to listen. I remember sitting in the background while my mom spoke to someone who was clearly overwhelmed. There was no lecture, no quick solution, and no judgment. She simply listened—fully present, patient, and calm. The conversation wasn’t loud or dramatic, but I could see the shift in the other person. They felt understood. That moment changed how I viewed compassion. I realized it isn’t about having the perfect words or fixing someone’s problems; it’s about making people feel seen when they need it most. From that point on, I started to practice compassion in my own way. At school, that often looks like being dependable. If someone doesn’t understand something in class, I try to help explain it without making them feel behind. If someone seems left out, I make an effort to include them. These aren’t huge actions, but I’ve learned that consistency matters more than scale. Compassion is built through small, repeated choices. Music has also played a big role in shaping how I understand compassion. As a bass player in my school’s jazz band, I’ve learned that being a good musician isn’t about standing out—it’s about supporting others. The bass isn’t always the most noticeable instrument, but it holds everything together. To play well, I have to listen closely to everyone else, adjust to their timing, and create space for them to succeed. That experience taught me a deeper form of awareness—paying attention to others and responding in a way that strengthens the group as a whole. I’ve carried that mindset into my daily interactions. Compassion also influences how I think about my future. I plan to pursue electrical engineering and music production, and in both fields, I want my work to serve a purpose beyond myself. Engineering has the power to solve real problems and improve people’s lives, whether through better technology, accessibility, or innovation. Music, on the other hand, connects people emotionally and gives them a way to feel understood. In both areas, compassion means thinking about the people who will be impacted and designing or creating with their needs in mind. Looking ahead, I want to continue turning compassion into action by staying aware, intentional, and consistent. It’s easy to overlook small opportunities to help or listen, but those moments often matter the most. Whether I’m working on a project, collaborating with others, or simply having a conversation, I want to approach it with the same patience and understanding I witnessed growing up. Compassion, to me, isn’t something you master once and move on from. It’s something you practice daily, in quiet ways that build over time. And no matter where life takes me, that’s something I plan to carry with me.
