What made me choose an art major was just about the idea of creating something. It was something that I had a deep desire for because I didn't know how else to express what I truly wanted for myself. I've been an artist for as long as I can remember and so it also became a form a therapy. Art is a way to let your visions come to life wether it would be through a drawing, sculpture, or a set build. And what really entice me as an artist is the vision behind the piece.
With arts comes with a vision. With every vision comes with a mind. With every mind comes with a perspective. Those are one of the many things that have enlightened me not only as an artist, but as a person. Art has been a way for me to escape into the rhelm that no other person can envision the same exact vision that I can create. Art will always find ways of telling stories and create diversity that we all share as a collective. And for me, my art has been through set design.
My passion has always been in the theatre arts specifically with scenic design. Scenic Design does share the same perspective as art because you are simply telling a story through the audience and also goes further along with the story, depending on how the script describes the set or the directors vision. I love how scenic design makes you create your own world not only through the script, but through a limited amount of space that is given. It helps create your own vision through the story to further along the meaning of the play and can sometimes even enlighten you.
My most recent work was for a project in my Fundamentals of Design class, where I had to create a set design piece from any play you can pick from. I did the set for the play, "A Very Very Very Dark Matter" by Martian McDonagh which was about the writer Hans Christian Anderson and his pygmy Mbute, or Marjory as she was called by Hans. The story is about the outside looking in and I wanted to give the set that sense of perspective of everything caving in and the truth slowly unfolding. The assignment helped me with giving me the perspective that I needed to have and made me emerse into the mind of each character in the play.
Being involved into the arts has changed my life and made me the person that I am today. I want to be able to continue to creatively express myself through set design and through the art of theatre. Thank you so much for your time.
