My name is Ocean Tippett, and I am a queer, straight-A student from a low-income household with a deep passion for the environment and medicine. I’ve always felt a unique connection to animals and the natural world, which drives my commitment to making a difference. I founded an environmental nonprofit, WeCan4Cause, which collects aluminum to sell to metal collectors and donates the proceeds to medical facilities. I am also very active in my community, volunteering at the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, and Horse Power. Additionally, I am launching an ambassador research program with Keep Pinellas Beautiful to further my environmental advocacy. My experiences and passions have inspired me to pursue a career in plastic surgery with the ultimate goal of opening an environmentally friendly practice. Combining my dedication to medicine and sustainability, I want to provide care that aligns with my values of protecting the planet and helping people. A scholarship would be transformative, allowing me to focus on my education, reduce financial stress, and achieve my dream of making a meaningful impact in both medicine and environmental conservation.

It was a sunny morning in fifth grade when I first noticed her—a girl who always sat near the back of the classroom, her quiet demeanor blending into the buzz of our noisy classmates. She was clutching her workbook with a nervous energy, her eyes darting toward the clock as if counting down the seconds to an escape. Her name was Lily, and although we never exchanged more than a passing glance, I could sense the weight she carried.
That day, our teacher handed out a math worksheet. As we all scrambled to pull out pencils, rulers, and erasers, I saw Lily freeze. Her backpack, worn and fraying at the seams, sat slumped beside her desk, and she began rifling through it with increasing desperation. I saw her lips tighten and her shoulders hunch as she gave up her search. Her hands rested stiffly on the desk, empty and trembling slightly.
I remember hesitating for a moment, caught between the task at hand and the pang of empathy stirring in my chest. It was such a small thing, just a pencil, but the look in her eyes—a mix of frustration and silent pleading—stuck with me. Without overthinking, I pulled an extra pencil from my case, a bright yellow one with a freshly sharpened tip, and walked over to her desk.
“Here, you can use this,” I said softly, placing it in front of her.
Her head snapped up, and for a moment, her wide brown eyes met mine. There was a flicker of surprise, followed by an expression I can only describe as pure relief. “Thank you,” she murmured, barely audible but filled with sincerity.
That pencil felt like nothing to me—it was one of the many I had in my bag, an everyday item I took for granted. But to Lily, it seemed like a lifeline. As the day went on, I saw her posture straighten, her hand move confidently across the worksheet, and even a small smile peek out during recess.
What struck me most, however, came weeks later. Lily had started to bloom in small ways—she raised her hand more in class, made quiet jokes with the other kids, and once, even shared her own pencil with someone else who had forgotten theirs. It was like watching ripples spread out on a still pond, each wave touching the next in an endless chain of kindness.
That moment taught me something profound: kindness doesn’t have to be grand to be meaningful. Something as simple as offering a pencil can create a domino effect, lifting someone up when they’re at their lowest and inspiring them to do the same for others.
Even today, I carry that lesson with me. Whether it’s offering a kind word, lending a hand, or simply listening, I know the power of small actions to make a big difference. That one pencil may have been small, but it was a spark that helped light a little bit of courage in Lily—and maybe in me too.
Patrick A. Visaggi Memorial Scholarship
My name is Ocean Tippett, and I am a queer, straight-A student from a low-income household with a deep passion for medicine, the environment, and empowering others. Growing up, I often felt insecure about my identity and appearance. As a queer kid in a world that often felt unkind, I struggled to see myself reflected in those around me. Those experiences shaped my values and motivated me to pursue a career in healthcare—specifically plastic surgery—where I can help people embrace their authentic selves.
I have always been driven by a deep sense of empathy and a desire to make a difference. In middle school, I faced a life-threatening health condition, a brain abscess, that left me hospitalized for three weeks. It was during that time that I saw the power of compassionate healthcare professionals and the impact they had on my recovery. Their care inspired me to enter the medical field, where I could combine my personal experiences with my passion for helping others.
Alongside my love for medicine, I am deeply committed to protecting the environment. I founded an environmental nonprofit, WeCan4Cause, which collects and recycles aluminum to support medical facilities. This initiative reflects my dedication to combining environmental care with meaningful contributions to the medical field. I am also launching an ambassador research program with Keep Pinellas Beautiful to further advocate for sustainability.
My future career goal is to become a plastic surgeon and open an environmentally friendly practice. I aim to bridge the gap between healthcare and sustainability, providing care that aligns with my values of compassion and environmental responsibility. My practice will be a safe and welcoming space, particularly for individuals in marginalized communities, where they can receive care that helps them feel confident and seen.
This scholarship would be transformative in helping me achieve my dreams. As someone from a low-income background, financial challenges have always been a barrier. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus on my education and research without the stress of financial strain. It would bring me closer to my goal of creating a legacy of care that empowers individuals and protects the planet.
I believe I share a common thread with the honoree of this scholarship: a commitment to making the world a better place through compassion, perseverance, and innovative thinking. Like the honoree, I am driven to create meaningful change in the lives of others and in the environment we all share. I hope to carry forward their values in my journey, combining medicine and sustainability to build a future rooted in kindness and impact.
Beacon of Light Scholarship
Growing up as a queer kid in a low-income household, I often felt insecure about who I was and how I presented myself to the world. The societal pressures to conform to traditional norms and the lack of visible LGBTQ+ representation only amplified those feelings. These experiences shaped me in profound ways, inspiring me to pursue a career in healthcare—specifically in plastic surgery—not just to make a difference in people’s lives, but also to help them embrace their authentic selves.
As a child, I grappled with feelings of not being enough. I was constantly aware of the judgments and stereotypes directed at me, and I longed for a sense of control over how I looked and felt. This insecurity motivated me to dream of a career where I could empower others to reclaim their confidence and self-worth. Plastic surgery, often misunderstood as purely aesthetic, holds incredible potential for personal transformation. It is about restoring harmony between one’s inner and outer self, helping individuals see themselves as they want to be seen.
My personal journey solidified my desire to enter the healthcare field. In middle school, I experienced a serious health condition—a brain abscess—that left me hospitalized for three weeks. That challenging time introduced me to the compassionate world of medicine and taught me the value of empathetic care. I realized that healthcare is not just about curing illnesses; it’s about fostering hope and supporting people during their most vulnerable moments.
Beyond my personal story, my passion for the environment also drives me toward a unique vision for my future. As I aim to become a plastic surgeon, I also plan to integrate sustainability into my practice. Medicine, though lifesaving, can have a significant environmental footprint, and I hope to innovate solutions that reduce waste and promote eco-friendly methods. For example, my environmentally conscious nonprofit, WeCan4Cause, reflects my determination to merge my passions for medicine and sustainability.
In the long term, I envision opening an environmentally friendly practice where patients feel empowered, cared for, and reassured that their treatment aligns with values of sustainability and ethical care. My practice will be more than a medical office; it will be a safe space for individuals from all walks of life, particularly those in marginalized communities, to seek compassionate care and feel seen.
Receiving a scholarship would make an enormous difference in my ability to achieve these goals. As someone from a low-income household, financial barriers have always been a challenge. A scholarship would allow me to focus fully on my education, explore research opportunities, and refine my vision without the constant stress of financial strain. More importantly, it would bring me one step closer to creating a legacy of compassion, empowerment, and environmental stewardship in the field of medicine.
I am committed to combining my unique experiences, values, and aspirations to make an impact in healthcare. My story is one of resilience and hope, and I intend to channel that into a career that uplifts others and honors the planet we all share.
Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
From a young age, I’ve been defined by my unique experiences and interests, which have shaped my aspirations and life path. Growing up as a gay man, my journey has been influenced by challenges, triumphs, and a constant drive to make a difference. This drive extends into my ambition to become a plastic surgeon, my commitment to advocating for the environment, and my passion for helping others, particularly within the LGBT+ community. As I move forward with my education and career goals, I find inspiration in the diverse elements of my life that guide me toward building a compassionate and responsible future.
Growing up as a gay man, I often felt isolated, misunderstood, and judged. The struggles of navigating a world that wasn’t always welcoming to my identity left me feeling discouraged at times, especially when facing the harsh realities of societal expectations and stereotypes. However, the very adversity I faced became the driving force behind my resilience. I realized early on that my challenges could either define me in a negative way or fuel my desire to rise above them and make a positive impact on the world around me. This mindset transformed my struggles into opportunities for growth, which directly influenced my aspirations to become a doctor and, more specifically, a plastic surgeon.
The discrimination I faced as an LGBT+ individual taught me the importance of empathy, understanding, and creating spaces where everyone feels safe and valued. Over time, this lesson has become central to my aspirations. I want to help people who feel marginalized, misunderstood, or dissatisfied with how they look. Plastic surgery, for me, represents more than just cosmetic enhancement; it is a way to restore confidence and provide people with the ability to feel comfortable in their own skin, especially those who have struggled with self-esteem or body image.
My passion for plastic surgery is rooted in my desire to help others feel empowered in their own skin. For me, plastic surgery represents more than just cosmetic enhancement; it symbolizes the potential to restore confidence, transform lives, and heal emotional wounds. Growing up, I encountered the harsh realities of societal standards of beauty and body image, which can be especially difficult for LGBT+ individuals who are already marginalized. The idea of using my medical knowledge to help people overcome self-esteem challenges is incredibly motivating.
Plastic surgery also intersects with my environmental passions, which may seem surprising at first. As someone who has been vegan for almost a decade, I’ve always had a deep connection to animals and the environment. My commitment to sustainability and ethical practices has driven me to explore ways to integrate eco-friendly approaches into my future practice as a plastic surgeon. The medical field, particularly plastic surgery, often faces criticism for its reliance on animal testing and wasteful practices. I plan to challenge this by developing an environmentally conscious practice that minimizes the ecological footprint of surgical procedures. For example, I want to explore sustainable materials for implants, non-toxic products, and ethical alternatives to animal testing in medical research.
By merging my passion for plastic surgery with my environmental advocacy, I aim to create a practice that not only restores physical appearance but also ensures that our planet is preserved for future generations. This approach isn’t just about the technical aspects of surgery but about building a compassionate and sustainable future for both people and the planet.
Environmental sustainability is at the heart of everything I do. Growing up in a world increasingly affected by climate change, pollution, and environmental degradation, I’ve felt a responsibility to take action. I believe that our planet’s well-being and the health of future generations should be prioritized, which is why I’m dedicated to promoting environmental consciousness. My future plans include developing a nonprofit organization that advocates for both the environment and the mental health of individuals within marginalized communities, including LGBT+ youth who often experience environmental and societal pressures.
My nonprofit will focus on promoting environmental education, supporting sustainable practices, and creating safe spaces for mental health discussions. I understand firsthand the connection between mental well-being and a positive environment, both in terms of the physical world around us and the social environments we inhabit. Many people, particularly from minority groups, are not only affected by environmental issues but also experience additional stressors from discrimination, economic hardship, and lack of access to healthcare. My goal is to create a space where environmental sustainability and mental health advocacy intersect, providing resources and support for those who need it most.
Additionally, as I pursue my medical career, I plan to integrate these two passions by considering the environmental impacts of healthcare. By promoting eco-friendly practices in the medical field, I hope to inspire others to take a more sustainable approach to health and wellness, reducing the overall impact of healthcare systems on the planet. The future of medicine must include a conscious effort to align healthcare with environmental sustainability, and I want to be a part of leading that change.
In addition to my goals in medicine and environmentalism, my personal experiences as a queer individual have shaped my commitment to supporting mental health, particularly for LGBT+ individuals. Growing up, I faced many challenges related to self-esteem, body image, and mental health. The stigma surrounding mental health, especially in marginalized communities, can be overwhelming. I want to use my future practice to address these issues, offering not only physical care but also emotional and psychological support to those who struggle with their self-worth.
As someone who has faced struggles with mental health, I’ve learned the importance of self-acceptance and support. My aim is to create a healthcare environment where people feel safe, understood, and empowered, particularly those who are often overlooked or stigmatized. By offering compassionate care, including mental health support, I hope to reduce the barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help, ensuring that everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive.
The stigma surrounding mental health, particularly within marginalized groups, needs to be addressed head-on. I aim to break down these barriers by promoting open dialogue and creating a safe space for individuals to talk about their struggles without fear of judgment. Just as I have found strength in seeking help for my own mental health challenges, I want to help others realize that it’s okay to not be okay and that support is available.
As I look to the future, I am excited to continue pursuing my dreams of becoming a plastic surgeon, advocating for environmental sustainability, and supporting the mental health of marginalized communities. These aspirations are intertwined and motivated by the desire to help others and create positive change in the world. Whether through my work in plastic surgery, my nonprofit efforts, or my commitment to the environment, I aim to build a career that combines compassion, innovation, and social responsibility. My journey is just beginning, but with the support of influential mentors, the lessons from my own struggles, and the unwavering drive to make a difference, I am confident that I will make a meaningful impact.
Each of these experiences and aspirations has contributed to who I am today. From overcoming the isolation of my LGBT+ identity to channeling my passion for the environment into a medical career, every step of my journey is leading me toward a future where I can inspire change, support others, and make the world a better place for everyone.

My favorite athlete to cheer for on Team USA is LeBron James. His impact both on and off the court is incredible, making him not only a legendary basketball player but also a symbol of perseverance, leadership, and advocacy. What stands out to me the most about LeBron is his unwavering commitment to excellence, whether it's on the basketball court or in his efforts to make a difference in the world.
LeBron’s work ethic, humility, and passion for the game are qualities that I deeply admire. Watching him play, you can see how much he respects the sport and pushes the boundaries of what’s possible. His consistency and ability to perform at the highest level, even as he ages, is something that inspires me, especially as I pursue my own dreams in the medical field. The way he continues to evolve as a player and a person resonates with me, reminding me that growth and progress are lifelong journeys.
Beyond basketball, LeBron's advocacy for social justice and his efforts to improve the lives of young people through his charitable initiatives, like the LeBron James Family Foundation, truly make him a role model. His focus on education, especially through the I PROMISE School, shows his dedication to uplifting communities and providing opportunities for those who need it most. This is something I find especially inspiring as someone who values mental health and supporting marginalized communities, including the LGBTQ+ community.

Sabrina Carpenter Superfan Scholarship
I’m a fan of Sabrina Carpenter because her career has been a beacon of authenticity, self-expression, and resilience, especially within the context of the LGBTQ+ community. As an LGBTQ+ person, it’s empowering to see someone like Sabrina, who has always been open about her journey of self-discovery and identity, navigating the pressures of fame while staying true to herself. She’s a role model who demonstrates that it’s okay to evolve and change publicly, which resonates with the experiences of many LGBTQ+ individuals who often have to navigate their own evolving sense of self.
Sabrina’s music, acting, and social media presence provide a space for fans to feel seen, especially for those of us who may have felt isolated or judged growing up. Her songs, like Skin and Nonsense, carry messages of empowerment, personal growth, and overcoming struggles. For me, Sabrina’s ability to deal with personal challenges, including online scrutiny and public relationships, with grace and strength is inspiring. As someone who has often felt disconnected or misunderstood, I’ve found solace in her music and in the way she openly addresses difficult emotions, helping me understand that vulnerability and self-expression are crucial parts of growth, both as an individual and as part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Moreover, Sabrina’s journey into acting and music, where she made her own path while staying grounded in her values, is something I find incredibly inspiring. Her choice to embrace a variety of artistic avenues and not be confined to a single genre or narrative is a reminder that creativity and identity don’t have to be boxed in. It encourages me to pursue my dreams without fear of judgment or the need to conform to external expectations, especially within the medical field, where I want to focus on areas like plastic surgery with an emphasis on mental health.
Sabrina Carpenter has shown that being unapologetically yourself, especially in an industry that often wants to dictate who you should be, is a form of strength. Her career has given me the confidence to embrace my own story and navigate the complexities of my identity with pride, knowing that growth and self-expression are ongoing processes.
Bear Fan Scholarship
giving closure to each character while leaving enough space for the unpredictability of life. The series’ power lies in its portrayal of complex relationships and personal struggles, and the ideal conclusion would encapsulate that growth and vulnerability.
For Carmy Berzatto, the chaotic and perfectionistic chef at the heart of The Bear, the perfect ending would be a moment of peaceful resolution. After years of grappling with the weight of his brother Michael’s suicide and the overwhelming pressure of running a restaurant, Carmy finally finds a balance. He steps back from the intense, high-stakes environment of the kitchen, no longer consumed by the need to be perfect or driven by guilt. Instead, he finds joy in mentoring younger chefs and making time for himself. In the final scenes, we see Carmy cooking a simple meal at home, a small but significant moment showing that he has learned to balance his personal happiness with his professional success. The Bear thrives as a Michelin-starred restaurant, but Carmy’s evolution shows that success isn’t only about achievement—it’s also about finding peace within himself.
Sydney Adamu, the talented chef who began as Carmy’s protege, would become a culinary star in her own right. Her creative vision and tireless work ethic earn her recognition, including a James Beard Award, cementing her place as one of Chicago’s top chefs. She continues working at The Bear, but as the restaurant grows, she takes on a larger leadership role, no longer just Carmy’s apprentice but his equal. The final scenes show Sydney planning to open her own restaurant, blending her own passion with the lessons she learned at The Bear. It’s a poignant moment, demonstrating her growth and her ability to carve out her own legacy.
Richie Jerimovich, the lovable yet chaotic figure, also undergoes a transformation. Throughout the series, Richie struggles with his sense of purpose, but by the end, he finds his footing as the restaurant’s manager. He blends his street smarts with newfound professionalism, earning the respect of both Carmy and the rest of the team. Richie’s arc culminates with him reconnecting with his daughter, signaling the repair of his broken family. His role as the emotional glue of the restaurant brings a sense of stability, grounding The Bear amidst the chaos.
Natalie "Sugar" Berzatto, Carmy’s sister, finally takes control of her own destiny. She balances her role as the family’s emotional anchor with her own entrepreneurial dreams, opening a bakery that supplies desserts to The Bear. Her relationship with Carmy deepens, as they learn to communicate openly, healing old wounds and building a stronger sibling bond. Sugar’s arc shows that even the most chaotic families can find healing when they make space for each other.
The final scene of the series would bring all these characters together. The staff, now more united than ever, gathers for a meal after service. The restaurant, thriving with both high-end dining and a casual sister spot, is a place where misfits have found their purpose. As the staff laughs, eats, and banters, the camera pulls back to reveal the bustling, joyful environment of The Bear, symbolizing that life, like the restaurant, continues—imperfect but beautiful. The series ends not with the finality of a conclusion but with the quiet hum of life going on, reminding viewers that healing and growth are ongoing processes.
Love Island Fan Scholarship
Challenge Name: “Heartstrings & Harmony”
Theme:
The villa transforms into a whimsical world of music and emotions, centered around the idea that true connections are like a symphony—beautiful when in tune but chaotic when offbeat. Couples must work together to create harmony, both literally and figuratively, by competing in creative, music-inspired games. The entire challenge tests their communication, chemistry, and sense of rhythm.
Objective:
Couples earn "notes" by successfully completing music and emotion-themed tasks. The goal is to compose a unique "love song" that reflects their bond. The couple whose performance wins the judges’ hearts earns a private, sunset rooftop concert featuring a surprise guest artist and a special advantage to shake up the villa dynamics.. Lyric Labyrinth:
Couples navigate a giant maze to collect puzzle pieces with words on them.
The catch? Each piece fits together to create lyrics, but the couple must decide which words to use and in what order.
Their final goal is to craft the chorus of their love song.
Unique Element: The maze includes twists, like decoy words that can lead to funny or awkward lyrics, creating playful tension.
2. Beat Builder:
Using unconventional instruments (like pots, pans, glasses filled with water, or even their bodies), couples must create a beat that will serve as the foundation of their song.
Judges score them based on creativity, rhythm, and teamwork.
Unique Element: The sound of their beat determines the mood of their song (e.g., romantic, upbeat, or dramatic), adding an element of surprise to the final performance.
3. Emotion Orchestra:
Couples face a giant spinning wheel with different emotions written on it, such as "joy," "jealousy," "passion," or "awkwardness."
They must act out the assigned emotion through a short, impromptu performance while incorporating their growing song.
Other Islanders cheer or heckle to throw them off balance.
Unique Element: This round highlights their ability to improvise and stay connected under pressure.
4. Harmony Hoops:
Couples stand back-to-back and must toss hoops over “music stands” while keeping a string tied to their wrists taut.
The string represents their "connection," and if it slackens or breaks during the challenge, they must start over.
Successful throws earn more notes for their final song.
Unique Element: This round requires physical coordination and trust, symbolizing the push and pull of a relationship.
5. Grand Finale: The Love Duet:
Couples present their completed songs to the group, performing with their beats, lyrics, and emotional inspiration.
Performances are judged by their fellow Islanders, who consider creativity, harmony, and chemistry.
Unique Element: A live “feedback buzzer” lets Islanders buzz in if they think the song feels forced or insincere, adding a layer of accountability.
Special Twist:
The winners receive a private rooftop date with a live performance from a surprise guest artist (think an up-and-coming singer-songwriter). They also gain a “Composer’s Privilege,” allowing them to mix things up in the villa by re-pairing any two Islanders for 24 hours. This adds tension and tests existing relationships.
Why It Works:
"Heartstrings & Harmony" stands out because it fuses music, emotions, and relationship dynamics in a way that hasn’t been explored before. The challenge emphasizes creativity and improvisation, offering plenty of funny, heartfelt, and dramatic moments. By requiring couples to compose and perform together, it reveals deeper aspects of their bond—or their cracks. The audience gets to witness everything from awkward laughs to powerful chemistry, making it truly unforgettable.
Chappell Roan Superfan Scholarship
Chappell Roan’s music has been a guiding light in my life, offering solace, empowerment, and inspiration during times when I felt most disconnected. Growing up as an LGBTQ kid in a world that often felt isolating and judgmental, her songs provided a space where I felt seen, understood, and celebrated for who I am. Chappell’s unapologetic embrace of individuality and vulnerability has helped me navigate my own struggles and find strength in my identity.
Her album *Brat* resonates deeply with me, not just because of its catchy melodies but because of the raw, honest storytelling that runs through every lyric. Tracks like “Pink Pony Club” and “Casual” have become anthems for me, reminding me to embrace my uniqueness and chase my dreams unapologetically. In particular, the song “Hi” stands out as a celebration of reclaiming confidence and joy, themes that have been central to my own journey. Listening to her music feels like hearing a friend cheer you on, reassuring you that you’re not alone in your struggles or aspirations.
What I admire most about Chappell Roan is her authenticity. She doesn’t shy away from addressing vulnerability, queerness, and self-discovery in her music. For someone like me, who has often struggled with self-esteem and finding my place in the world, her transparency is a reminder that it’s okay to be real and imperfect. Her career represents more than success in music—it’s a movement of inclusivity and self-expression that inspires fans to live boldly and authentically.
Supporting Chappell Roan’s career feels personal to me because of how much her music has shaped my outlook. As someone who aspires to help others rediscover their confidence—whether through reconstructive surgery, advocacy, or creating safe spaces—her message aligns perfectly with my values. She uses her platform to uplift and unite, and I hope to do the same in my own way.
Chappell’s journey, from her small-town roots to becoming a rising queer icon, shows that authenticity and persistence can create real change. By supporting her, I feel like I’m contributing to a movement that celebrates individuality, challenges societal norms, and builds a more inclusive world. Her music reminds me to keep going, stay true to myself, and never lose sight of the power of vulnerability and creativity.
In a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming, Chappell Roan’s music is a reminder to embrace joy, connect with others, and celebrate who you are. She has not only impacted me personally but has inspired me to use my own talents and ambitions to create a positive impact, just as she has done for so many.
Charli XCX brat Fan Scholarship
Growing up as an LGBTQ child in a small community, I often felt different, misunderstood, and disconnected from those around me. These challenges taught me resilience and the importance of compassion for others who feel unseen or judged. They also instilled in me a deep sense of empathy that has shaped my life and aspirations. Despite the hardships, my unique perspective has inspired me to create a future where individuality is celebrated and where barriers—whether societal or personal—can be overcome.
One of the pivotal ways I aim to make this vision a reality is by becoming a plastic and reconstructive surgeon. I’ve always been drawn to the idea of helping others rebuild their confidence and rediscover their sense of self. This field, which merges science, art, and humanity, gives people the opportunity to heal, transform, and feel empowered. Whether addressing scars from surgery, trauma, or congenital conditions, my goal is to provide care that goes beyond aesthetics, helping patients feel whole again.
My experiences as an LGBTQ individual have made me especially sensitive to the importance of representation and understanding in healthcare. I know firsthand how isolating it can feel when your identity isn’t validated or your struggles aren’t acknowledged. This is why I want my future practice to be inclusive and empathetic, a place where people from all walks of life can feel seen, valued, and supported.
My childhood challenges also taught me the value of perseverance and creativity—traits I know are essential for becoming an entrepreneur. Beyond my work as a surgeon, I want to establish a business that extends my passion for helping others. This might take the form of a foundation supporting access to care for underserved communities or a program that integrates mental health support into the recovery process. Whatever shape it takes, my goal is to leave a lasting, positive impact.
One of my favorite songs on *Brat* is "Hi." The song’s celebration of reclaiming joy and confidence resonates deeply with me, as it mirrors my own journey of turning struggles into sources of strength. The message of embracing your individuality and refusing to be defined by others’ expectations aligns perfectly with my philosophy of empowering others through my work.
As I work toward these goals, I am continuously inspired by the belief that no one’s story is written in stone. Scars, challenges, and differences do not define us; instead, they are chapters in our journey toward becoming our truest selves. Through my practice and advocacy, I hope to create opportunities for others to write new chapters filled with confidence, self-acceptance, and growth.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
At 15, my life took a drastic turn when I was diagnosed with a brain abscess. What began as a routine headache spiraled into a three-week hospital stay and a battle for my life. The experience left me physically weak, emotionally drained, and grappling with a deep sense of vulnerability. Scars—both emotional and physical—remained as a constant reminder of how fragile life could be. I often looked in the mirror, feeling a shadow of the person I was before, and struggled to regain my confidence and sense of purpose.
The months following my recovery were some of the most challenging of my life. I felt discouraged and often questioned my worth. My self-esteem plummeted as I withdrew from friends, avoided social events, and focused on masking my insecurities. It wasn’t just about healing from the infection—it was about piecing together who I was and who I wanted to be in the face of something that had reshaped my identity.
As I rebuilt my confidence, I found inspiration in those who had been by my side—particularly the medical team that treated me. Their compassion, skill, and ability to restore not only my health but also my sense of dignity became the foundation of my goal to pursue a career in medicine. However, it wasn’t until I reflected on my own insecurities about my scars and the emotional toll they took that I understood my true calling: I want to become a plastic and reconstructive surgeon.
Plastic surgery is often misunderstood as a field focused solely on vanity, but for me, it represents something much deeper. I want to help individuals who, like me, have faced medical challenges that leave visible reminders. Whether it’s reconstructing a breast post-mastectomy, correcting a cleft palate, or diminishing the visibility of surgical scars, my goal is to ensure that these physical markers do not define someone’s identity. Everyone deserves to see a reflection in the mirror that matches how they feel on the inside—strong, confident, and whole.
My journey has taught me that scars, whether visible or invisible, tell stories. But they do not have to dictate the narrative of who we are. I aim to use my experiences to connect with my future patients on a personal level, offering not just medical expertise but empathy and understanding. Through my practice, I hope to foster a sense of renewal in others, proving that challenges like the ones I faced can become catalysts for empowerment and growth.
Looking ahead, I see my role as not just a surgeon but an advocate for transformation—both physical and emotional. I aspire to build an inclusive practice that prioritizes healing, confidence, and self-worth for all individuals. Just as I learned to overcome the challenges of my brain abscess, I am committed to helping others overcome their own challenges, ensuring that scars—whether from illness, surgery, or life—are merely a part of their story, not the conclusion.

Vegan Teens Are The Future Scholarship
I’ve been vegan for nearly a decade, a decision rooted in a deep connection to animals and the environment that I’ve felt since childhood. My parents never pressured me into this lifestyle; instead, it grew naturally from my desire to align my actions with my values. From an early age, I saw animals as sentient beings, deserving of love, respect, and protection. This perspective, combined with my growing awareness of the environmental impacts of animal agriculture, solidified my commitment to veganism.
Over the years, veganism has become much more than a diet for me—it is a way of life that emphasizes compassion and sustainability. It has shaped how I view the world and my role within it, inspiring me to advocate for a future where humanity and the planet coexist in harmony. I believe that the choices we make every day, from the food we eat to the industries we support, have a profound impact on the world around us.
As I pursue my goal of becoming a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, I am acutely aware of the ethical and environmental challenges within the medical field. Plastic surgery is notorious for its reliance on materials and practices that harm the environment, from wasteful packaging to animal testing. For me, veganism is not just a personal lifestyle—it is a framework for creating change in industries that need it most. My dream is to establish an environmentally conscious plastic surgery practice that minimizes its ecological footprint while adhering to cruelty-free principles.
This practice would integrate sustainable materials and innovative techniques to reduce waste and reliance on animal-derived products. I envision a future where procedures can be performed with biodegradable tools, eco-friendly sutures, and renewable energy sources. Beyond the technical aspects, I also want my practice to serve as a platform to educate others about the intersection of medicine, sustainability, and compassion. By prioritizing these values, I hope to inspire colleagues and patients to see that caring for our bodies and the planet can go hand in hand.
In addition to my medical aspirations, I want to use my education and experiences to grow the vegan movement. This includes partnering with organizations to advocate for cruelty-free research methods, mentoring young professionals interested in sustainable practices, and contributing to public discourse on how veganism can positively impact industries beyond food. My goal is to demonstrate that compassion for animals and environmental stewardship are not just personal ideals—they are practical, achievable, and transformative.
Veganism has taught me the importance of standing by my values and finding innovative ways to live them out. As I work toward my dreams, I remain committed to a future where ethical practices are the norm and sustainability is central to every decision. By integrating my passions for veganism, the environment, and medicine, I hope to leave a lasting impact that benefits not just my patients, but the world as a whole.
Lemons to Lemonade Scholarship
Growing up as an LGBTQ kid in a small community, I experienced isolation and judgment that often left me feeling invisible. While these experiences were difficult, they taught me resilience and gave me a unique perspective on the importance of belonging and self-worth. As I worked to overcome these challenges, I found solace and purpose in two areas that have since become my passions: the environment and mental health. These interests inspired me to create a business idea that unites them—a nonprofit organization designed to protect the planet while supporting the mental well-being of those who call it home.
My business idea focuses on addressing environmental challenges through sustainable initiatives while fostering mental health advocacy. The link between environmental degradation and mental health is often overlooked, but it’s crucial. Communities impacted by climate change frequently experience stress, anxiety, and loss. My nonprofit will provide resources to tackle these dual challenges, offering eco-friendly programs alongside mental health services to create a more holistic approach to healing both people and the planet.
I am passionate about this business idea because I know what it’s like to feel unseen and unsupported. I want to create a space where individuals can rebuild their confidence, connect with others, and contribute to a healthier world. By empowering individuals to take an active role in environmental conservation, they can also find empowerment within themselves. This dual impact—improving both the planet and personal self-esteem—has the potential to create a ripple effect of positive change.
Beyond the nonprofit, my ultimate goal is to become an environmentally conscious plastic and reconstructive surgeon. My practice will integrate sustainability into the medical field, utilizing eco-friendly materials and processes to reduce its environmental impact. In doing so, I hope to demonstrate that innovation and sustainability can coexist, inspiring others in the medical industry to adopt similar practices.
Entrepreneurship, to me, is the perfect avenue to bring these ideas to life. It allows me to challenge the status quo and create solutions that align with my values. I’ve already begun learning what it takes to be an entrepreneur through research, networking, and small-scale project management. These experiences have taught me the importance of adaptability, resourcefulness, and understanding the needs of the communities I want to serve.
This business has the potential to impact the world by addressing two critical issues: environmental degradation and mental health. By bringing people together to work toward common goals, it fosters a sense of purpose and unity while actively making the planet a better place. I believe that creating spaces where people can heal, grow, and contribute is key to building a more compassionate and sustainable future.
Through entrepreneurship, I have the chance to turn my passions into a tangible reality. With this business, I can give back to the communities and planet that shaped me, proving that even the most challenging experiences can be transformed into opportunities for growth and empowerment.

Yet, amid the turmoil, a realization began to take root: this struggle wasn’t just a setback; it was an opportunity to redefine myself and what I stood for.

Pursuing a career in plastic surgery within the mental health field reflects my commitment to merging artistry, science, and compassion to create positive, lasting changes in people’s lives. Plastic surgery goes beyond altering appearances; it has the power to restore self-esteem, provide closure after trauma, and enhance overall well-being. For individuals recovering from physical injuries or those seeking to align their outward appearance with their self-perception, these transformations can significantly improve mental health and emotional resilience. My aspiration to specialize in this field stems from my own challenges and triumphs, such as recovering from a brain abscess and navigating life as a queer person. These experiences have deepened my empathy and fueled my passion for uplifting others.
Plastic surgery offers a unique intersection of mental health and physical transformation, but my vision goes further. I am determined to address one of the industry’s most pressing challenges: sustainability. The medical field, particularly in surgical practices, produces considerable waste and contributes to environmental degradation. My goal is to develop an environmentally friendly plastic surgery practice that combines cutting-edge technology with sustainable solutions. From reducing single-use plastics in surgical instruments and packaging to using renewable energy sources in clinical operations, I aim to redefine the standard for eco-conscious medical practices. This initiative not only aligns with global efforts to combat climate change but also sets an example for how healthcare professionals can balance patient care with environmental responsibility.
In addition to the environmental impact, I want to focus on creating a practice that provides access to underserved communities. Many individuals in marginalized groups lack access to reconstructive procedures that could drastically improve their quality of life. By offering equitable services and partnering with organizations that provide funding for pro-bono surgeries, I aim to extend the reach of my practice to those who need it most. This aligns with my overarching belief that healthcare should be accessible and transformative for everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic background.
Furthermore, my practice will emphasize holistic care, integrating psychological counseling and support as part of the patient journey. For many patients, especially those undergoing reconstructive procedures due to trauma, addressing mental health is as important as the surgery itself. I plan to collaborate with mental health professionals to ensure that patients receive the tools and support they need to embrace their transformations fully.
By combining innovation, compassion, and environmental responsibility, I intend to redefine what it means to be a plastic surgeon. My goal is not only to help patients reclaim their confidence and mental well-being but also to lead the field toward a more sustainable and inclusive future. In doing so, I hope to leave a lasting impact on both individuals and the broader medical community, proving that healing and progress can coexist harmoniously with our responsibility to care for the world around us.
Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
My experience with mental health has profoundly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations, particularly as I pursue my goal of becoming an environmentally conscious plastic surgeon. Growing up as a poor queer kid, mental health was often overlooked or dismissed, and it wasn’t until later that I realized the weight of how these experiences affected me. Through my struggles, I came to understand the importance of mental health care, not just for myself, but for those around me. This understanding has driven me to advocate for better mental health resources, particularly for marginalized communities, and to incorporate compassion and awareness into my future career.
Growing up, I witnessed the stigma surrounding mental health in my community. Being queer in a conservative environment added another layer of complexity to my emotional well-being. I was taught to hide my struggles, to push through the pain without asking for help. This led to a sense of isolation, and I often felt like I was fighting my battles alone. As I matured, I began to understand the importance of acknowledging mental health issues and seeking support. This shift in perspective came from realizing that mental health is just as important as physical health and that they are inextricably linked.
Through this journey, I began to see how mental health impacts all aspects of life, including relationships. Growing up in an environment where mental health was stigmatized, it was hard to form authentic relationships. I was afraid of being judged or misunderstood, and this led to feelings of loneliness. However, as I started to address my own mental health, I began to open up more and develop deeper connections with others. I learned that sharing vulnerability and showing empathy are essential for building trust and understanding in relationships.
My experience with mental health has also directly influenced my career aspirations. The mental health challenges I faced, and continue to face, have driven my desire to become a plastic surgeon. I want to specialize in helping those who, like me, may have struggled with self-esteem or body image issues. For many, plastic surgery is more than just a physical transformation; it’s a chance to rebuild confidence and reclaim their sense of self. I’ve always been passionate about helping people, but my experiences with mental health have shown me that true healing is a holistic process that considers both the mind and body. I believe that, as a plastic surgeon, I can provide not just a physical transformation, but a pathway to emotional recovery and self-empowerment.
Moreover, my commitment to mental health advocacy extends beyond my personal experience. I am deeply aware of the barriers that many marginalized groups face when accessing mental health care. As a queer person, I know how important it is to have healthcare professionals who are understanding and nonjudgmental. I aspire to not only become a compassionate plastic surgeon but also a fierce advocate for mental health awareness and accessibility. My goal is to create an environment where people from all walks of life can seek the care they need without fear of discrimination or bias.
Mental health has taught me that healing takes time, and it requires patience, compassion, and understanding. It has shaped my desire to pursue a career that not only addresses the physical but also acknowledges the emotional aspects of healing. As I continue my education and move toward becoming a plastic surgeon, I am committed to using my experience to help others find not just physical transformation but emotional healing. College is a crucial step in this journey, as it will provide me with the knowledge and tools necessary to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others—especially those who have been overlooked or marginalized.

Going to college represents an opportunity for me to finally break free from the limitations imposed by my circumstances and pursue a dream I’ve been working toward for as long as I can remember. Growing up as a poor queer kid, I faced immense challenges, but I was always driven by the desire to make a difference in the world. The world didn’t always let me, but I am determined to carve out a path where I can use my education and skills to help others, particularly in the medical field, while also working toward a more sustainable future.
From a young age, I understood the harsh realities of my environment. Financial struggles often meant I had to do without the things many others took for granted. But these hardships didn’t defeat me—they fueled my resolve. The adversity I faced growing up shaped my identity and my goals. I saw firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate a world that doesn’t always have space for people like me, and it made me more determined to create a place where others like me could thrive.
My dream of becoming a plastic surgeon was born out of a desire to help people transform their lives. I’ve always been fascinated by the power of surgery to restore not just the body, but the self-esteem of those who feel overlooked or misunderstood. I want to specialize in plastic surgery with a focus on making it more accessible, especially for marginalized communities, and integrating environmentally friendly practices into the medical field. This is where my passion for sustainability intersects with my career goals. The healthcare industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental waste, and I believe that it’s possible to make a positive impact by incorporating green practices into medical procedures, waste management, and even the materials used in surgery.
To work toward these goals, I’ve dedicated myself to excelling academically. Throughout high school, I challenged myself by taking advanced courses, including chemistry and biology, to prepare for the rigorous coursework in college. I’ve worked hard to build a solid foundation in the sciences, knowing that it’s essential for a successful medical career. I also know that being a plastic surgeon isn’t just about skill—it’s about compassion, understanding, and advocating for those who may not have a voice. I’ve been an advocate for LGBT mental health, and my goal is to continue that advocacy through my work as a physician. I aim to help people who face discrimination or stigma in healthcare, whether because of their gender, sexual orientation, or background.
However, I know that my journey will not be easy. I’ll face financial barriers, demanding coursework, and the pressures that come with pursuing a career in medicine. The experience of growing up without financial stability means I’ll need to navigate the complexities of affording tuition and living costs, all while maintaining focus on my studies. But I am determined to push through these challenges. My goal isn’t just to become a doctor—it’s to make a difference in the world, to prove that someone from my background can succeed and help others along the way.
College is the stepping stone I need to reach my goals and make a meaningful impact on the world, particularly in the medical field and environmental sustainability. It means access to opportunities, resources, and a chance to transform my dreams into reality. I’m not just trying to graduate—I’m trying to change the world.

The movie that has had the greatest impact on my life is *WALL-E*. While it may seem like a simple animated film about a small robot tasked with cleaning up a desolate Earth, its deeper themes of environmental neglect, the importance of human connection, and the power of resilience resonate with me on a profound level. *WALL-E* not only mirrors the challenges our planet faces due to unsustainable practices, but it also parallels my own struggles and aspirations to make a difference in a world that often feels indifferent to those who are marginalized.
Growing up as a poor queer kid, I saw the effects of environmental degradation firsthand. My community struggled with limited resources, and many of the issues we faced—such as pollution and neglect—seemed like a direct result of people ignoring the future in favor of short-term gain. *WALL-E* presents a future where Earth is no longer habitable due to environmental destruction, leaving humanity to escape in space. The film’s bleak depiction of Earth, covered in trash and devoid of life, is a stark reminder of what could happen if we continue on our current path of overconsumption and environmental disregard. This image has stayed with me, fueling my desire to pursue a career that combines both medicine and sustainability. I want to be a plastic surgeon who not only helps people heal and feel empowered but also runs an environmentally friendly practice that takes care of both my patients and the planet.
What makes *WALL-E* so impactful is the character of WALL-E himself—a small, seemingly insignificant robot who has spent years cleaning up the mess humanity left behind. His dedication to his task and his hopeful spirit, despite the overwhelming odds, inspire me. It’s easy to feel powerless when confronted with large-scale issues like climate change or systemic inequalities. But WALL-E’s persistence shows that even the smallest actions can make a difference. This resonates deeply with my own experiences growing up. As a queer person in a poor community, I often felt as though I had little control over my circumstances. But like WALL-E, I learned that no matter how small the action, it can be part of a larger movement for change. Whether it was speaking out for LGBTQ+ rights or advocating for sustainability, I began to understand that change starts with individuals who are willing to do the hard work—even when it feels like no one is paying attention.
Moreover, *WALL-E* also highlights the importance of human connection. In the film, WALL-E's relationship with Eve—a sleek, advanced robot—reminds us that we need each other to create lasting change. This aspect of the film speaks to my desire to be a compassionate and empathetic plastic surgeon. I understand how important it is to build trust with patients, especially those who may be struggling with their self-image or mental health. The emotional impact of plastic surgery is as significant as the physical transformation, and just as WALL-E finds purpose in helping others, I want my work to create lasting, positive change in my patients’ lives.
Ultimately, *WALL-E* has shaped the way I view the world. It taught me that even in the face of overwhelming challenges, hope, persistence, and connection can drive meaningful change. As I work toward my goal of becoming a plastic surgeon and creating a sustainable practice, I carry the lessons of *WALL-E* with me: to always stay hopeful, to act with purpose, and to remember that the future of the planet—and the people on it—depends on our willingness to care and act now.

Growing up as a poor queer kid, I quickly learned that the world often doesn’t make room for people like me. I’ve faced numerous challenges that tested my resilience, but it was through those struggles that I developed a deep sense of purpose. My experiences have shaped my desire to make a difference, and my goal is to become a plastic surgeon who not only transforms lives through medical care but also advocates for environmental sustainability. My journey to this goal has been far from easy, but each hardship I’ve faced has driven me to push harder toward my dreams.
My experiences growing up instilled in me the belief that the only way to change the world is by leading with empathy and resilience. As a queer kid in a poor community, I often felt isolated and powerless. The systemic inequalities around me made it feel as though I had little chance to succeed, but I refused to let those circumstances define me. Instead, they fueled my passion for helping others who may be struggling like I was. I realized that, as a plastic surgeon, I could not only offer physical healing but also contribute to the emotional and mental well-being of my patients by giving them a sense of confidence and empowerment. The connection between self-image and mental health became clear to me, and I knew I wanted to use my skills to help others feel whole and accepted.
At the same time, I’ve become increasingly passionate about the environment. Growing up in a community with limited access to resources, I saw firsthand the impact of environmental neglect. The world around me seemed to prioritize short-term profits over long-term sustainability, which only deepened my resolve to make a difference. As I pursue my dream of becoming a plastic surgeon, I want to bridge the gap between healthcare and sustainability. My goal is to run an environmentally friendly practice, using green technologies, reducing waste, and considering the environmental implications of the procedures I perform. Plastic surgery, in many ways, is about transformation, and I believe that transformation shouldn’t come at the expense of the planet.
To work towards my goals, I have focused on excelling in my education and preparing for medical school. I’ve taken advanced science courses, volunteered in healthcare settings, and worked to understand both the technical and ethical aspects of medicine. At the same time, I’ve immersed myself in environmental advocacy, learning about sustainable practices and how to incorporate them into various industries, including healthcare. I’ve also participated in organizations that promote mental health awareness, particularly in the LGBTQ+ community, because I understand how interconnected mental well-being and self-image can be.
However, pursuing a college education and a career in medicine won’t be without its challenges. As a first-generation college student, I will face financial burdens and the pressures of academic rigor. Balancing the demanding workload of medical school with my goal of running a sustainable practice will require determination, resourcefulness, and hard work. But I am prepared to overcome these challenges. My past experiences have taught me how to persevere in the face of adversity, and I know that my ability to rise above will continue to propel me forward.
In the end, my journey is about more than just becoming a plastic surgeon—it’s about making a meaningful difference in the world. By combining my passion for healthcare with my commitment to sustainability and my desire to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, I aim to leave a lasting impact, proving that even those who are marginalized and overlooked can change the world for the better.
TLau "Love Fiercely" Scholarship
Growing up near the beach has been one of the most influential aspects of my life. I’ve always been drawn to the beauty and serenity of the ocean, but it wasn’t long before I started noticing the devastating impact of pollution on the environment. Over the years, I’ve spent countless hours helping to clean up trash along the shorelines, picking up discarded plastic bottles, straws, and other debris that washed ashore. This experience has not only deepened my love for the environment but has also shaped my future goals, inspiring me to pursue a career in plastic surgery while integrating environmentally conscious practices into my business.
Living by the beach, I have always felt a deep connection to the natural world. The ocean is not just a backdrop to my life—it’s a place where I’ve spent time reflecting, finding peace, and connecting with nature. However, I’ve also seen firsthand how human negligence can harm this beautiful ecosystem. The beaches where I spent so much of my childhood often became littered with plastic waste, and the impact on marine life and the environment was evident. I began to realize how destructive waste, particularly plastic, can be, and I knew that I needed to do something to help.
I started volunteering in beach clean-up programs, working with local groups to remove trash from the water’s edge and ensure that the beaches remained safe for wildlife and future generations. Over time, this experience became more than just an occasional volunteer activity—it became a mission. I learned about the harmful effects of plastic pollution on marine animals and the broader environment, and I began to understand how vital it is to promote sustainability and reduce waste in all aspects of our lives. This experience ignited a passion within me for the environment, which eventually led to a deeper desire to make an impact through my career.
As I began to explore my career interests, I found that plastic surgery was an ideal field for me. I’ve always been fascinated by the ability to improve people’s lives through surgery, whether it’s through reconstructive procedures or aesthetic enhancements. However, I didn’t want to simply enter the field without considering its environmental impact. Knowing how harmful plastic waste can be, I realized that there was an opportunity to merge my love for the environment with my career aspirations. My goal is to become a plastic surgeon who runs an environmentally friendly practice, focusing on reducing waste and utilizing sustainable, eco-friendly equipment and materials.
By incorporating environmentally friendly practices into my plastic surgery business, I plan to reduce the practice’s carbon footprint and minimize its use of disposable plastics. I envision a practice where surgical instruments are reusable, packaging is biodegradable, and energy-efficient technologies are used. My commitment to environmental sustainability will not only be reflected in my business operations but also in the way I approach patient care and the choices I make regarding medical supplies and equipment.
This journey, which started with my love for the beach and my commitment to preserving it, has shaped the way I approach both my academic goals and my future career. The beach clean-ups taught me the importance of environmental responsibility, and those lessons are something I carry with me as I pursue a career in plastic surgery. Ultimately, I want to leave a legacy that reflects both my passion for healthcare and my dedication to creating a more sustainable future.

As a high school student aspiring to become a plastic surgeon, my ultimate goal is to make a significant impact on both the medical field and the environment. I’ve always been passionate about healthcare, and as I continue to pursue my medical education, I am equally committed to developing an entrepreneurial venture that addresses the environmental issues that accompany many medical practices today. I plan to open a plastic surgery practice that combines my love for medicine with my dedication to sustainability, aiming to reduce the ecological footprint of the healthcare industry.
Plastic surgery is an exciting and dynamic field, but it often comes with a significant environmental cost. Hospitals and medical practices regularly use a wide range of disposable products, from surgical instruments to packaging, which contribute to waste and environmental degradation. The carbon footprint of medical practices is also high due to the energy consumed by hospitals, the transportation required for patient care, and the disposal of hazardous waste. Despite these environmental challenges, I see an opportunity to lead change in the plastic surgery industry by launching a practice that places a strong emphasis on sustainability.
My vision is to create a plastic surgery practice that operates with the utmost respect for both patients and the planet. The first step in my plan is to implement a waste-reduction strategy that minimizes the use of disposable plastics. This could include using reusable surgical instruments when possible, switching to biodegradable or recyclable medical supplies, and reducing waste by offering paperless consultations and digital records. I’d also work on transitioning to energy-efficient equipment that reduces the practice’s overall carbon footprint, investing in LED lighting, eco-friendly heating and cooling systems, and renewable energy sources when possible.
Another major initiative I’d pursue is sourcing eco-friendly materials for patient care. For example, using sustainable packaging for medications, and making sure that any post-surgical products (such as bandages, wraps, or garments) are made from biodegradable or recyclable materials. I also plan to implement sustainable building practices in the design of the office space, incorporating energy-efficient appliances, water-saving fixtures, and environmentally friendly construction materials to further reduce the environmental impact.
While environmental responsibility is central to my plan, patient care will always be my top priority. My practice would maintain the highest standards of surgical care while integrating sustainable practices into every aspect of the business. I aim to create a welcoming environment for patients that not only ensures their well-being but also educates them on the importance of sustainability in healthcare. By blending my skills in plastic surgery with my passion for environmental conservation, I hope to show that medical practices can lead the way in sustainability.
Starting an eco-friendly plastic surgery practice will require significant upfront investment and planning. The higher costs of sustainable products and equipment will require careful budgeting, but I believe the long-term benefits to the environment and the community will make it worthwhile. I’ll seek partnerships with green organizations, explore grants, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to build a network of like-minded individuals dedicated to sustainability.
This scholarship will provide me with the opportunity to further my education and gain the necessary medical and entrepreneurial skills to create this practice. I aim to be at the forefront of change in the healthcare industry, demonstrating that it is possible to provide top-tier medical care while simultaneously protecting the planet. Ultimately, I hope my practice will inspire other medical professionals to adopt more sustainable practices, and together, we can make a lasting positive impact on both the medical field and the environment.
El Jefe Entrepreneurial Scholarship

Anesthesia Pain Care Consultants - Excellence in Action Scholarship
During my sophomore year of high school, I was unexpectedly hospitalized for three weeks due to a brain abscess. The experience was terrifying and isolating, yet it taught me lessons about resilience, humility, and compassion in ways I never could have imagined. Facing a severe illness at such a young age made me aware of both my vulnerabilities and my ability to stay positive in the face of hardship. It was during these three weeks in the hospital, while often dependent on others for basic care, that I truly came to understand the power of humility and empathy—both for myself and for others around me.
Being a patient in a busy hospital gave me insight into how hard healthcare workers have to push themselves to keep up with their patients' needs. I saw nurses and aides consistently forgoing their own comfort to tend to others, and I quickly realized that they were doing their best even when I had to wait for care. Rather than growing frustrated, I focused on gratitude and began thanking them whenever they came to my side. I remember one moment when a nurse apologized for not coming sooner, and I reassured her, expressing my deep appreciation for all that she was doing. Those little gestures of kindness, both given and received, made a difficult experience more bearable and taught me that a humble attitude can build stronger connections with those around us, even in the most challenging situations.
One specific instance helped solidify this lesson. A patient in the next bed, facing their own severe health issues, was clearly struggling emotionally. Despite feeling weak myself, I took a moment to talk with them, listen to their fears, and offer some words of encouragement. This simple act of empathy reminded me of how powerful it is to offer support, even when you’re going through something painful yourself. For a moment, we were able to comfort each other, and I saw firsthand the impact compassion can have. Humility, I realized, sometimes means putting others first even when you’re struggling—by showing up for others, you can find your own strength.
My experience with the brain abscess not only reshaped my perspective on life but also deepened my commitment to pursuing a career in healthcare. I want to bring this same humility and empathy into my future as a medical professional. This scholarship would allow me to pursue the education necessary to reach that goal and would remind me of the responsibility I carry to support and uplift my patients as I was supported. My experience as a patient has shaped my understanding of patient care, showing me that healthcare is more than a job—it’s a dedication to serving others. If I’m awarded this scholarship, I’ll use it to pursue my goals with the same humility, compassion, and determination that got me through those challenging weeks in the hospital.
Jim Coots Scholarship
My ultimate goal is to become a plastic surgeon who not only excels in aesthetic and reconstructive procedures but also leads the way in sustainable healthcare practices. I envision establishing my own environmentally friendly practice, one that prioritizes sustainable methods to reduce the ecological footprint of medical care. As I see it, the healthcare industry has a responsibility to minimize its impact on the planet, and my practice would be a step toward setting new standards. This scholarship will be invaluable in helping me achieve this vision by providing crucial financial support, especially as I work toward these ambitious goals in a field that requires extensive education and resources.
My educational path begins with a biology degree at a university with strong pre-med and research programs. A solid foundation in biology will prepare me for the rigor of medical school, where I plan to specialize in plastic surgery. I am particularly interested in learning about new technologies that reduce medical waste, incorporate biodegradable materials, and emphasize patient care through environmentally conscious practices. This scholarship would help fund my participation in these fellowships, allowing me to gain the expertise necessary to build my own eco-friendly practice.
Building this practice will be the most challenging yet rewarding part of my plan. I envision a clinic designed to operate with minimal waste and a reduced reliance on harmful chemicals, instead incorporating biodegradable or reusable materials wherever possible. Sustainable energy sources like solar power would reduce the clinic’s environmental impact, while partnerships with eco-friendly suppliers would help me integrate recyclable materials in surgical tools and supplies. Additionally, I’d work toward offering patients a holistic experience, including wellness and mindfulness programs alongside surgery to promote mental well-being and recovery. The financial costs of setting up a facility like this will be substantial, but I’m determined to make it a reality, knowing it can inspire similar approaches in the field.
In the larger context, my goal is to set a standard that redefines what responsible, holistic healthcare can look like. The medical field has an opportunity to innovate not only in patient outcomes but in sustainable practices, and I hope to make a meaningful impact by creating a practice where patients feel cared for physically, mentally, and environmentally. This scholarship would bring me closer to that vision by helping me fund the essential steps in my education, training, and eventual launch of a sustainable clinic. I am committed to becoming a plastic surgeon who is as conscious of environmental stewardship as I am of patient care, and with the right support, I know I can make this vision a reality.

By alleviating my financial burden, this scholarship would bring me closer to my goal of making a positive impact on others, especially those in marginalized communities who face unique struggles in healthcare settings.
Receiving this scholarship would be a transformative step in my journey, offering me the financial support to pursue my education, develop my skills, and eventually contribute to the medical field as a compassionate and inclusive plastic surgeon. My ambition to achieve this career drives me to work hard and overcome obstacles, but financial assistance is crucial in ensuring that I can continue on this path. I am determined to make a difference in the world, and with the help of this scholarship, I am hopeful that I can overcome the financial challenges ahead and reach my potential.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My goal is to become a certified plastic surgeon and establish an environmentally friendly practice that sets new standards in sustainable healthcare. This ambition requires a carefully designed pathway, budget planning, and commitment to sustainable operations, all of which I am already beginning to prepare for as a high school student.
First, I am focused on excelling in my current studies to gain admission to a reputable university with strong pre-med or biology programs. My aim is to major in biology and consider minoring in environmental science or sustainable business practices. This combination will not only prepare me for medical school but will also equip me with the knowledge to approach healthcare with an environmentally conscious mindset. I also plan to make connections with professors and mentors in both fields, which will guide me as I develop my practice in the future. Additionally, I’ll seek internships in both medical and eco-conscious organizations, gaining insights into sustainable healthcare solutions.
Following my undergraduate studies, I will attend medical school, focusing on surgery. Completing medical school will be followed by a residency in plastic surgery, which will require intensive training and a significant financial commitment. I plan to apply for scholarships, financial aid, and possibly take out educational loans to fund my education. Scholarships that support students interested in sustainable practices and plastic surgery would be particularly valuable to lessen the financial load, and I am actively researching these options.
Once I gain professional experience, I’ll focus on the next stage of my plan: opening my own environmentally friendly practice. To achieve this, I will need a comprehensive budget that covers startup costs. Leasing or purchasing a building, outfitting it with sustainable materials, and installing energy-efficient systems are essential elements of my vision. In addition to the physical setup, I’ll need to purchase medical equipment that aligns with eco-friendly goals, establish initial staff salaries, and cover initial marketing and operational expenses. I estimate this practice will require around $500,000 to $1 million to launch, depending on location and scale. To fund this, I’ll seek loans, explore private investors, and potentially partner with organizations that support sustainable healthcare startups.
Establishing a practice focused on environmental responsibility requires attention to every aspect of its design. I plan to implement reusable medical tools, use biodegradable materials, and establish a thorough recycling program within the clinic. Partnering with companies that create biodegradable medical tools will be essential, as will sourcing from eco-conscious suppliers. The clinic will also feature energy-efficient infrastructure, such as LED lighting, solar panels, and a smart HVAC system to minimize energy consumption. Additionally, I will use digital records to reduce paper waste, minimizing our environmental footprint while creating an efficient patient experience.
This journey, from high school to my own practice, will take over a decade to accomplish. I estimate four years for undergraduate studies, four years for medical school, and another five to six years for my plastic surgery residency and gaining the early career experience necessary to succeed independently. Following this, I’ll need one to two years to save, plan, and secure funding for my practice. My goal is not just to succeed as a plastic surgeon but to introduce sustainable practices that make a lasting impact on both the medical industry and the environment. This vision is ambitious, but by following my planned timeline, securing the necessary resources, and investing in eco-conscious solutions, I am determined to turn it into a reality.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
My decision to major in biology stems from a lifelong fascination with the human body and a deep desire to help people improve their lives. Biology offers a window into understanding the intricate systems that allow us to function, grow, and heal. This foundation will prepare me for my ultimate goal of attending medical school and becoming a plastic surgeon. Plastic surgery appeals to me not only because of its technical complexity but also because of the profound impact it has on people’s confidence and overall well-being.
From a young age, I was always intrigued by how medicine could change lives. However, it wasn’t until I began learning about plastic surgery that I fully realized the depth of its impact. Many people associate plastic surgery solely with aesthetic improvements, but in reality, it goes far beyond that. Whether it’s reconstructing someone’s appearance after an accident or surgery, correcting congenital deformities, or helping a person align their physical appearance with their gender identity, plastic surgery can provide patients with a renewed sense of self-worth and confidence. It’s this ability to transform someone’s self-perception that draws me to the field.
One of my personal goals is to help individuals who may feel disconnected from their bodies. Growing up, I saw how much our physical appearance can affect mental health and self-esteem. Confidence often stems from how we see ourselves, and for some, that means wanting to change aspects of their appearance. I believe that by helping people achieve the look they desire, I can positively influence their mental and emotional well-being. For example, for someone who has suffered a traumatic injury or undergone a mastectomy, reconstructive surgery isn’t just about appearances—it’s about helping them regain a sense of normalcy and confidence. That impact is invaluable.
Majoring in biology is the first step toward this goal. The major will provide me with a strong understanding of the human body at a cellular and systemic level. This knowledge is critical for a future in surgery, as it forms the basis for understanding how the body heals, how surgical procedures can improve function, and how to mitigate complications. Additionally, a background in biology will equip me with the skills to engage in critical thinking, research, and problem-solving—essential skills for medical school and surgery.
Another aspect of my passion for becoming a plastic surgeon stems from my desire to be a part of a field that is constantly advancing. Plastic surgery is a specialty that continually evolves with new technologies, techniques, and innovations. Being a part of a field that is not only scientifically challenging but also always advancing excites me. It aligns with my personal values of continuous learning and adapting to new challenges.
In conclusion, my choice to major in biology is rooted in my desire to become a plastic surgeon, a profession that combines technical skill with the ability to deeply impact someone’s life. By helping individuals feel more confident and comfortable in their bodies, I believe I can make a meaningful difference.
Jessica's Journey Brain Tumor Survivor Scholarship
The brain abscess I suffered from was one of the most challenging and transformative experiences of my life. The physical pain was intense, but the emotional toll it took was even greater. Being confined to a hospital bed for weeks, cut off from the life I once knew, left me feeling isolated and helpless. I watched the world go by from the sterile walls of a hospital room, and in those moments of solitude, I was forced to confront the fragility of life and the importance of health. Yet, despite the challenges, the experience reshaped my perspective and gave me a renewed sense of gratitude for every opportunity and breath I have today.
During my stay in the hospital, I often felt completely isolated. I was surrounded by doctors and nurses who were constantly checking my vitals and administering treatments, but the feeling of disconnection lingered. The daily routine of tests, IV drips, and uncertainty about my future left me feeling alone, despite the best efforts of the medical staff and my family to support me. This isolation, however, forced me to look inward and reflect on my life. I realized how much I had taken for granted—simple things like walking outside, spending time with friends, or even just being able to think clearly. My time in the hospital helped me understand how fleeting and precious life is, and this realization has shaped me into someone who values each moment and the opportunities I have.
Gratitude became a driving force in my life. After recovering from the abscess, I was determined to make the most of every chance I got, whether it was in my academic pursuits or personal life. The small things that once seemed insignificant—like going to school or spending time with loved ones—took on new meaning. My experience taught me that opportunities aren’t guaranteed, and I’ve since developed a deep appreciation for every moment I am given. I now approach life with a mindset of gratitude, knowing that not everyone gets a second chance to live fully. This outlook motivates me to push forward, even when faced with challenges or setbacks.
What also stayed with me from my time in the hospital was the incredible care I received from the medical staff, especially the surgeons. The precision and skill they demonstrated in treating my abscess inspired me to pursue a career in surgery. I want to give back to the medical community in the same way that they gave me my life back. I have spent many hours thinking about how much surgeons impact people’s lives, and I want to be able to do that for others. The long hospital stays and frequent visits exposed me to the importance of surgical intervention and motivated me to dedicate my life to this field. Surgery, to me, represents not just a career, but a way to help people in their most vulnerable moments, just as I was helped.
Looking forward, my academic and career goals are centered on becoming a plastic surgeon. I am committed to excelling in my studies, knowing that the journey ahead will be demanding, but I am driven by my passion to make a difference. The brain abscess, while a terrifying experience, ultimately gave me clarity on my purpose. It has motivated me to work toward a career where I can help others overcome their own health challenges and give them the second chance at life that I was fortunate enough to receive.
Ryan R. Lusso Memorial Scholarship
Growing up with a mother who was in and out of the hospital due to breast cancer shaped me in ways I could never have imagined. As a child, I was often left feeling confused and scared, watching the person who was supposed to be my rock battle a relentless disease. My mother’s illness was not just a physical struggle for her; it was an emotional battle for our entire family. Witnessing her go through treatments, surgeries, and the constant uncertainty of what the future held forced me to mature faster than most kids my age. It was a formative experience that has shaped who I am today.
Throughout my mother’s battle with cancer, there were times when the hospital felt like a second home. The sterile smell of hospital corridors and the sight of IV drips became a regular part of my life. Despite her exhaustion and pain, my mother always tried to put on a brave face for me. Her strength amazed me, but at the same time, I knew how much she was suffering. Watching her fight through this illness instilled in me a deep understanding of resilience and the power of hope. No matter how bad things got, she always managed to hold on to the belief that she would get better, and that hope kept our family going.
Having a parent with cancer also taught me the importance of gratitude. There were many times when I feared I would lose her, and those moments made me appreciate the simple fact that she was still here. Each day she fought was a victory, and I learned to celebrate the small wins in life. This appreciation has carried over into every aspect of my life today. I no longer take anything for granted, whether it’s time with loved ones or the health I’ve been blessed with.
My mother’s illness also forced me to grow emotionally. As her condition fluctuated, I became more aware of the fragility of life and the importance of being present for those you care about. I found myself taking on responsibilities that most kids my age didn’t have to worry about. I helped around the house more, managed school while juggling the emotional weight of her illness, and tried my best to be a source of comfort for her when she needed it most. This experience helped me develop a deep sense of empathy and compassion for others. I learned that everyone is fighting their own battles, often invisible to the outside world, and that kindness can make all the difference.
Today, I carry these lessons with me. My mother’s fight against breast cancer has shaped my goals and the way I approach life. I strive to be resilient in the face of challenges, just as she was. I also aim to live with purpose and gratitude, recognizing that life can change in an instant. My mother’s illness has given me a profound sense of empathy, inspiring me to be there for others who are going through tough times, whether they are visible or hidden struggles.
In the end, my mother’s battle with breast cancer was one of the hardest experiences of my life, but it shaped me into someone who values strength, compassion, and the importance of never giving up. Her fight taught me how to fight for what matters in life, and for that, I will always be grateful.
GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
One lyric from Olivia Rodrigo's "GUTS" that resonates deeply with my teenage experience is: “I’m not the same as I was before.” This line encapsulates the essence of adolescence, a period characterized by constant change and self-discovery.
During my teenage years, I often felt like I was navigating a whirlwind of emotions and identities. The struggle to define myself in the face of shifting friendships, societal expectations, and personal insecurities was overwhelming. This lyric reflects the reality that, as teenagers, we undergo significant transformations—both internally and externally. We often feel the pressure to fit in while simultaneously grappling with our evolving sense of self.
The phrase also speaks to the challenges of embracing change. Adolescence is not just about physical growth; it involves a deep emotional journey. I remember moments of confusion and doubt, feeling like I was losing parts of myself while trying to adapt to new environments, like high school or social circles. This constant evolution can lead to feelings of isolation, as it’s hard to communicate the complexity of these changes to others.
Rodrigo's lyric resonates because it acknowledges that growth is not linear. One day, I might feel confident and secure, while the next, I could be filled with self-doubt. This duality is a hallmark of teenage life, as we oscillate between wanting to assert our individuality and the desire to belong. The lyric captures the essence of this struggle perfectly, highlighting both the inevitability of change and the emotional turmoil that often accompanies it.
As a gay teen, I am faced with internal conflict of not living up to stereotypes and not fitting in. This lyric resonates with me because it speaks to the isolating feeling of paranoia and rejection faced throughout middle and high school. However, it encourages me to go beyond other judgments of me and extend my efforts pursuing my future.
Moreover, the acknowledgment of not being the same as before serves as a reminder that growth is an ongoing process. It invites us to embrace our evolving identities rather than fear them. This is particularly relevant for teenagers, who are often caught between childhood and adulthood, trying to reconcile their past with their aspirations for the future.
In summary, Rodrigo’s lyric captures the transformative journey of adolescence, reflecting the challenges of self-discovery, the complexity of emotional growth, and the necessity of embracing change. It resonates with anyone who has navigated the tumultuous waters of growing up, reminding us that evolution is both inevitable and essential.
Resilient Scholar Award
Growing up in a dirt-poor household with my mother as the sole provider shaped me in profound ways. We didn’t have much, and my mother worked tirelessly to support us, ensuring that we had the necessities despite our difficult circumstances. The challenges of growing up in a single-parent household were always present, but they also taught me the values of resilience, sacrifice, and determination. Seeing my mother work long hours, often sacrificing her own well-being to take care of me, gave me an early understanding of the weight of responsibility and the strength it takes to keep moving forward even when the odds are against you.
Our financial struggles meant that we often had to go without things that others took for granted. There were times when we weren’t sure if we would make it through the month. While I wished for more growing up, I now realize that those hardships instilled in me a deep sense of appreciation for the little things in life. I learned early on not to take anything for granted. Whether it was a roof over our heads, food on the table, or the love my mother gave despite being stretched so thin, I came to understand the value of gratitude.
That sense of gratitude became even more apparent when I experienced a life-altering event during my teenage years. I was hospitalized for three weeks due to a brain abscess, a terrifying experience that forced me to confront the fragility of life. During those three weeks, I underwent treatments and faced uncertainties about my health and future. The experience was physically exhausting and emotionally draining. There were moments when I felt like I would never get better, and I was scared of what the future might hold.
However, that time in the hospital gave me more than just recovery—it gave me perspective. Lying in that hospital bed, unable to do the simplest tasks without assistance, made me appreciate the everyday privileges I had been overlooking. Once I recovered, I felt a renewed sense of gratitude for my health, my family, and my life. I realized how fragile life can be, and that realization deepened my commitment to living it with purpose and appreciating every moment, no matter how small. It shifted my mindset from one of frustration over what I lacked to one of gratitude for what I had.
That experience didn’t just give me a new outlook on my own life; it also deepened my empathy for others. I realized that everyone is carrying their own burdens, often invisible to the outside world. Just as I had been struggling with health issues, others might be dealing with challenges I couldn’t see. This understanding pushed me to be more compassionate and patient with others, knowing that we all have battles we’re fighting behind the scenes.
In conclusion, growing up in a single-parent household with financial struggles shaped me into someone who values resilience and gratitude. My three-week stay in the hospital due to a brain abscess was a turning point in my life, teaching me to appreciate what I have and encouraging me to be more empathetic toward others. Life can change in an instant, and I’ve learned to approach each day with gratitude for my health, my family, and the opportunities I have to grow. These experiences have shaped who I am today, and they continue to guide how I interact with the world.
Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Billie Eilish’s music has always resonated deeply with me, particularly her songs “Bellyache,” “When the Party's Over,” and “Everybody Dies.” As a gay man navigating the complexities of identity in a world that can often feel isolating, these tracks have provided a sense of understanding and connection.
"Bellyache" explores feelings of guilt and remorse after a party where something has gone wrong. The song captures the internal conflict of wanting to fit in while grappling with the consequences of one's actions. Growing up, I often felt pressure to conform to societal expectations, which led me to suppress parts of my identity. The haunting melody and Eilish's soft vocals reflect the emotional turmoil of feeling out of place and the regret that can come with it. This resonates with my experiences of hiding my true self to avoid judgment, creating a dissonance between who I am and how I present myself to others. The song serves as a reminder that it's okay to acknowledge these feelings and that I am not alone in facing such inner struggles.
"When the Party's Over" delves into the pain of heartbreak and emotional turmoil. As someone who has faced challenges in relationships, both romantic and platonic, this song speaks to the loneliness that can accompany the search for connection. Eilish's portrayal of vulnerability and emotional honesty resonates with my own struggles. The imagery of wanting to maintain a façade of happiness while feeling deeply pained captures the essence of my experiences. Often, I’ve felt the need to hide my true emotions to fit in, especially in social situations where I feared judgment. This song reminds me that it’s okay to express vulnerability and seek support from others, encouraging me to be more open about my feelings.
"Everybody Dies" offers a stark reflection on mortality and the inevitability of loss, a theme that resonates deeply as I contemplate my own experiences and the broader societal issues affecting the LGBT community. Eilish’s candid exploration of life’s fragility and the importance of living authentically strikes a chord within me. This song serves as a reminder to cherish each moment and to embrace who I am without fear. It encourages me to be unapologetic about my identity, motivating me to advocate for others in the LGBT community who may struggle with acceptance.
In conclusion, Billie Eilish's music has become a refuge for me, allowing me to confront my feelings of isolation and vulnerability. Her songs speak to the heart of my experiences as a gay man, helping me navigate the complexities of identity while reminding me of the power of self-acceptance and authenticity.
LeBron James Fan Scholarship
LeBron James is not just an incredible basketball player; he is a source of inspiration for millions around the world, including myself. His combination of talent, hard work, and dedication both on and off the court resonates deeply with me. As a fan of LeBron, I appreciate his unmatched skill set and his commitment to using his platform for positive change. He exemplifies what it means to be a leader, both in sports and in the community, making him a role model for many, including aspiring athletes like myself.
I admire LeBron James for his versatility on the court. He possesses an extraordinary ability to play multiple positions, which allows him to dominate in various situations. His basketball IQ is unmatched; he understands the game at a fundamental level, making him an exceptional teammate and leader. Beyond his skills, what truly sets LeBron apart is his work ethic. His relentless drive to improve, both in terms of physical fitness and technical skills, showcases a commitment to excellence that inspires me to push myself in my own pursuits.
When it comes to the debate of whether LeBron is the greatest basketball player of all time, I believe he certainly deserves to be in that conversation. His achievements speak volumes—four NBA championships, four NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards, and numerous All-Star selections. However, determining the "greatest of all time" (GOAT) is subjective and often depends on individual perspectives. While I recognize the legendary status of Michael Jordan, who defined an era of basketball, I see LeBron’s impact as equally significant. He has consistently performed at an elite level over an extended period, adapting his game to stay relevant and effective.
Moreover, LeBron’s off-court contributions enhance his legacy. He has made significant strides in social justice advocacy and education, launching the "I PROMISE School" in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Growing up as a gay student in a predominantly Republican town has significantly shaped my experience with mental health, influencing my goals, relationships, and overall understanding of the world. Navigating my identity in an environment that often felt hostile and unwelcoming has been challenging, but it has also provided me with valuable insights and a deep sense of purpose. My journey has been marked by moments of despair and struggle, including experiences with suicidal thoughts, but these challenges have ultimately fueled my passion for advocacy and supporting others who face similar battles.
In a community where traditional values often overshadow acceptance and understanding, I quickly learned that being different was not easily accepted. As a young person grappling with my sexual orientation, I felt isolated and alone, often wondering if I would ever be accepted for who I am. This sense of alienation was exacerbated by the societal norms surrounding me, where discussions about mental health were often stigmatized, particularly when it came to LGBT issues. The lack of representation and support made it difficult to navigate my feelings, leading me to internalize my struggles and grapple with profound sadness.
During this tumultuous period, I faced several stages of suicidal ideation. The weight of my circumstances felt overwhelming at times, leading me to believe that there was no way out of the darkness that enveloped me. I struggled to find hope and purpose in a world that seemed intent on denying my existence. However, through therapy and the gradual realization that I was not alone, I began to understand that my experiences could serve as a catalyst for change, not just for myself but for others in similar situations.
Therapy played a crucial role in my journey to healing. Through counseling, I learned to articulate my feelings and confront the internalized stigma I had absorbed. I discovered the importance of vulnerability and the strength that comes from sharing my story. This process of self-acceptance helped me cultivate resilience and fostered a desire to advocate for those who might not have the same resources or support systems I had. It became clear to me that I wanted to use my experiences to help others navigate their mental health struggles, particularly within the LGBT community.
My understanding of the world has evolved significantly as a result of these experiences. I have come to recognize the intersectionality of mental health, identity, and social justice. Living in a conservative environment has opened my eyes to the disparities that exist within society, particularly concerning marginalized communities. I have witnessed firsthand how the lack of acceptance can have detrimental effects on mental health, leading to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation among LGBT youth. This awareness has instilled in me a sense of urgency to advocate for mental health resources that are inclusive and affirming.
As I move forward, my goals are firmly rooted in advocacy and support for mental health within the LGBT community. I aspire to create safe spaces where individuals can express their struggles and feel validated in their experiences. By collaborating with local organizations and participating in outreach programs, I hope to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and the unique challenges faced by LGBT individuals. My ultimate goal is to contribute to a cultural shift that prioritizes mental well-being and acceptance, encouraging open dialogue and support for those who feel marginalized.
Additionally, I aim to educate others about the importance of mental health advocacy in conservative areas, where these discussions are often taboo. By sharing my story and highlighting the impact of acceptance on mental health, I hope to foster understanding and empathy within my community. I believe that by advocating for mental health resources and creating awareness, we can break the cycle of stigma that often silences those in need.
In conclusion, my experiences as a gay student in a Republican town have profoundly shaped my understanding of mental health and its complexities. The struggles I have faced, including moments of suicidal ideation, have fueled my passion for advocacy and my desire to help others navigate their mental health journeys. Through education, outreach, and compassion, I hope to contribute to a world where everyone can feel accepted and supported, regardless of their identity. My journey is ongoing, but I am committed to using my voice to effect positive change and to ensure that others do not have to face their struggles alone.
David Hinsdale Memorial Scholarship
As a gay student, my journey has been shaped by both the challenges and triumphs that come with navigating my identity in a world that can often be unwelcoming. Growing up, I faced struggles with acceptance, not just from others but from within myself. These experiences have instilled in me a profound understanding of the importance of mental health, particularly within the LGBT community. My goal is to become an advocate for LGBT mental health, helping others find the support and resources they need to thrive.
One of the most significant issues that many in the LGBT community face is mental health stigma. This stigma can lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression, which is why I aim to create awareness and promote open dialogues about mental health. I plan to collaborate with local organizations to host workshops and support groups where LGBT individuals can share their experiences in a safe environment. Additionally, I intend to work on initiatives that provide mental health resources tailored specifically for LGBT youth, helping them navigate their unique challenges while fostering resilience and self-acceptance.
In conjunction with my advocacy work, I am also passionate about protecting the environment. Climate change and environmental degradation disproportionately affect marginalized communities, including the LGBT population. I plan to participate in local clean-up efforts, educational campaigns, and sustainability initiatives that encourage environmentally friendly practices within the community. By merging my commitment to mental health with environmental advocacy, I hope to create a holistic approach that nurtures both individual well-being and the health of our planet.
Ultimately, my career aspiration is to become a plastic surgeon. I believe that through this profession, I can significantly impact the lives of individuals who seek transformative surgeries, often as a means of enhancing their self-esteem and body image. Many members of the LGBT community, particularly transgender individuals, may seek surgical options to align their physical appearance with their gender identity. By specializing in plastic surgery, I aim to provide compassionate care to these individuals, helping them feel more comfortable in their own skin.
As I work towards my goals, I am committed to becoming a leader in my community. I envision a future where LGBT mental health is prioritized, environmental sustainability is embraced, and individuals feel empowered to pursue their identities without fear. My journey is just beginning, but I am determined to use my voice and my future career to advocate for meaningful change. Through education, advocacy, and compassionate care, I aspire to make a positive impact on my community, fostering a world where everyone can thrive, regardless of their identity.

Diva of Halo Legacy Scholarship
I've always been driven by some force. Driven to explore and experience. I never really knew why; my comfort zone repulses me. I'm driven to run into the unknown; I live to face my anxieties.
I used to force myself into a labyrinth of expectations, stereotypes and one of perception. Since I was a kid, my queerness defined me as an outsider, the looks of disgust and the sharp words of hatred left me feeling stuck in a world that I had no place in.
Their vulgar words fueled my curiosity. My desire to succeed became more and more intense. I felt obligated to dive into a textbook and find everything I could, I felt obligated to prove my quality and character that was wrongfully determined by their preconceptions. Soon I was curious to why seek approval and acceptance from people who gave me no reason to. I was curious to discover the person I've spent my whole life trying to hide.
I started to listen to the force driving me to explore. Exploring the environment, my curiosity sparked after feeling trapped indoors or online during covid. This curiosity sparked a love for the outdoors and a desire to preserve and protect what the earth blessed me with. I joined the environmental club and participated in beach cleanups weekly. My curiosity has not only led to passion but also led me to activism. I soon became a volunteer for Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Horsepower and I facilitated donations for Suncoast Primate Sanctuary. My curiosity had pushed me to spread awareness for the animals in these sanctuaries, as well as to prevent even more animals from being deemed non-releasable and forever forced to live in captivity due to abusive human intervention.
This past year, my curiosity led me to defend what I believe. When Florida’s governor proposed a construction project that would involve destroying Honeymoon Island. I immediately grabbed a sign that portrayed a turtle saying, “We don't want our kids to grow up in a world like this, would you?” That day, last august we protested, there was only about 50 of us, but our curiosity fueled our movement. I was terrified, scared that my voice was useless or that I would be judged. I was interviewed, questioned and mocked, but my curiosity of my impact, my determination and my passionate voice was too loud to be squashed or ignored. That day, I raised 150 petitions signatures myself. I didn’t realize my influence, until the governor put his proposed project on hold. My curiosity for exploring the unknown led me here. It led me to learn hard work, determination and persistence, I felt empowered and i felt i had made a change.
My passion is to advocate for the voiceless, and with this scholarship I will be able to further my education and be an advocate for those who cant be one for themselves.
