I am a high school senior currently enrolled in The Visual & Performing Arts Academy's Vocal Strand at Salem High School. My dream career is being a high school chorus teacher with the eventual goal of leading an esteemed collegiate choir. As a choir teacher, my goal will be to expand opportunities for my students by providing a safe space to learn, grow, and thrive, especially for those from underprivileged and minority backgrounds. I aim to achieve this by instilling in them the values and lessons that come from learning, performing, and experiencing music from a wide range of time periods, styles, and cultural contexts. By exploring a diverse repertoire in both genre and difficulty, my students will grow into hardworking, empathetic, and culturally aware individuals who understand the importance of the arts and their role in shaping community identity.
Since joining the Salem High School student body in my sophomore year, I have had unforgettable musical experiences, including participation in two All-District Choirs, the All-Virginia Choir, ACDA’s National 11th and 12th Grade Honor Choir, and a performance at Pearl Harbor’s 80th Anniversary Tribute Ceremony in Hawaii. In addition to these musical honors, I am actively involved in my school’s academic community. I serve as Secretary of the Student Council Association, am an AP Scholar, and am a member of both Rho Kappa (Social Sciences Honor Society) and Tri-M (Music Honor Society).

Since joining the academy in my sophomore year, I have had unforgettable musical experiences, including participation in two All-District Choirs, the All-Virginia Choir, The American Choral Directors Association's National 11th and 12th Grade Honor Choir, and a performance at Pearl Harbor’s 80th Anniversary Tribute Ceremony in Hawaii. My involvement in the choir community over the past two years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I have discovered a passion for music that will remain with me as I continue singing throughout my life and, eventually, in my dream career as a high school choir director.
The lessons one learns in choir are so fundamental to the human experience that they transcend music. Although I aspire to be a music educator, I will strive to teach my students about more than just music. I believe it is an educator's responsibility to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to face the obstacles life may present. Too often, in the final years of a student’s educational journey, they encounter challenges beyond their control that hinder them from pursuing higher education or even graduating from high school. As an educator, I want to be a voice of reassurance, someone who inspires students to believe in themselves when they face struggles that seem too burdensome to handle alone.
Throughout my life, I have been blessed with dedicated teachers who used their talents to nurture their students’ gifts, instilling in them a lifelong love of learning. If I can use my gifts to do even half as much as they did, I will have achieved my dream.
