In my community, educational inequity has always been an overlooked issue. I noticed early on that many students, especially in under-resourced schools, lacked academic support, mentorship, and access to tools that could help them thrive. When I moved from New York to Miami, I saw just how much a strong support system could shape a student’s success, and I knew I wanted to be part of that change.
This desire led me to join Achieve Miami, an organization dedicated to bridging educational gaps and creating opportunities for students like myself. I began volunteering on Saturdays, working with elementary school children to improve their literacy and reading comprehension. From helping students select books to listening to them read aloud, I realized the power of consistent mentorship and how a small act like showing up can make a lasting difference. I later took part in Achieve’s summer program, where I worked with kids in Miami Gardens on topics like nutrition, health, and leadership. That experience deepened my love for community service and taught me the value of meaningful engagement.
Today, I serve as Vice President of the Achieve Miami Scholars Club at my school, where I help motivate my peers to get involved. My goal is to expand this work by launching student-led reading mentorships in more schools, partnering with local libraries, and introducing financial literacy and health focused lessons to better prepare our youth for the future.
I’m committed to being the role model I once needed and helping others become that, too.
Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
Growing up, I was fortunate to have a strong foundation laid by my mother and grandmother. Though we’ve faced financial challenges as a single-parent household, my mother made sure that I was exposed to financial responsibility early on. She would include me in conversations about budgeting, savings, and even the hard choices she had to make when it came to prioritizing needs over wants. Watching her manage our household on her own while making sure I never lacked taught me the true value of money and how important it is to plan ahead.
Despite this personal foundation, I’ve noticed a lack of emphasis on financial literacy in school. Most students graduate knowing how to solve complex equations but not how to file taxes, understand credit scores, or manage student loan debt. It’s an unfortunate reality that many young people only begin learning about personal finance after they’ve made costly mistakes. They fall into debt, miss credit payments, or sign up for loans they don’t fully understand, all because no one taught them differently. This has pushed me to become deeply invested in learning about finance not only for myself but also so I can share what I learn with others.
One of the best decisions I made after moving from New York to Miami was getting involved with Achieve Miami. The program introduced me to so many eye-opening experiences, including a partnership with Morgan Stanley that offered financial literacy classes. These sessions broke down topics like saving, budgeting, and credit in ways that were easy to understand and immediately useful. I’ve made it a mission to encourage my peers to join Achieve Miami not just because it provides volunteer opportunities and leadership development, but because it equips us with real-life skills that aren’t always taught in school.
Now, I regularly share financial tips with my peers whether it’s about building credit, choosing student loans wisely, or budgeting as a student. I also speak openly about the financial sacrifices my mother makes for my education, which keeps me grounded and focused. I know that my financial decisions today will affect not just my tomorrow, but hers too. I want to make sure that the generational cycles of financial hardship end with me.
As I begin my freshman year at Syracuse University this fall, I plan to take everything I’ve learned about finance and continue building on it. I will actively seek out financial literacy programs and workshops on campus, take business and economics electives, and eventually, I want to organize financial literacy events for other students especially for first-generation or low-income college students like myself.
My dream is to become an anesthesiologist, but I also see myself as a future mentor and community leader. Financial literacy will be a crucial part of how I support others. Whether it’s through formal mentoring or simply sharing insights, I want to make sure the people around me are empowered to make smart, informed financial decisions because when we know better, we do better.

Losing my grandmother was a deeply impactful experience that affected my mental and emotional well-being. It challenged me in ways I hadn’t anticipated, but it also taught me valuable lessons about the importance of mental health and how to navigate adversity. Initially, I didn’t take the time to properly grieve her loss because I immediately channeled my pain into action. This coping mechanism allowed me to stay focused on my academic and personal goals, but I’ve come to realize that it’s just as important to honor my emotions and take the time to heal, rather than suppressing them.
My grandmother’s passing also taught me about the power of mental strength and emotional resilience. I learned to remain calm and composed, even in moments of chaos or uncertainty, and to protect my peace by disengaging from negative influences. This mental clarity has shaped my belief that maintaining emotional health is just as essential as physical health, especially when pursuing challenging career paths like medicine. It has reinforced my desire to become an anesthesiologist, where I can help people in their most vulnerable moments and offer them not only physical care but emotional comfort as well. The emotional resilience I developed through grief has influenced my career choice because I want to help others who are navigating vulnerable or difficult moments in their lives.
In terms of relationships, my experiences with grief and betrayal have deepened my understanding of trust, boundaries, and the importance of surrounding myself with supportive people. I’ve learned to prioritize relationships that nurture my well-being and to distance myself from those that don’t. This shift in perspective has allowed me to become more intentional about the connections I cultivate, both personally and professionally, including in my aspirations to work in healthcare, where collaboration and trust are vital.
Through all of this, my faith has been my anchor. My talks with God, my prayers, and the scriptures I turn to keep me grounded. They remind me that I am not alone, that He will provide, and that I am on the right path. My faith, along with the values instilled in me by my grandmother and mother, continues to shape my journey. I know I will become an anesthesiologist. I will help people in their most vulnerable moments, just as my mother and grandmother have helped me. I will provide wisdom, stability, and change for those who come after me. Just as my mother laid a strong foundation for me, I will do the same for others, ensuring that no sacrifice was in vain.
Young Women in STEM Scholarship
1.
I am a dedicated student with a passion for learning, leadership, and making a difference in the world. Growing up in a single-parent household, I have seen firsthand the importance of resilience, hard work, and determination. My mother has been my guiding light, instilling in me the values of perseverance and ambition. She has shown me that success is not about where you start but about how hard you are willing to work to achieve your goals.
What motivates me the most is the idea of creating a meaningful impact. I am passionate about science and healthcare, and if I could do anything with my life, I would become an anesthesiologist. The ability to provide comfort and care to patients during critical moments aligns with my desire to help others. Medicine is not just about knowledge; it is about compassion, precision, and trust, and I strive to embody these qualities in everything I do.
Beyond my career aspirations, I want to be a role model for others who come from similar backgrounds. I want to show that no matter the challenges one faces, with dedication and support, anything is possible. Success, to me, is not just about personal achievement but about lifting others up and creating opportunities for those who follow.
2.
STEM excites me because it represents innovation, problem-solving, and the potential to change lives. The field is constantly evolving, offering endless opportunities to push boundaries and create solutions to real-world problems. What fascinates me the most about STEM is the way it connects different fields to drive progress.
Although my primary interest lies in healthcare, I recognize the profound impact technology has on the medical field. Information technology plays a crucial role in improving healthcare systems, from electronic medical records that enhance patient care to AI-driven diagnostics that detect diseases earlier. If I were to contribute to the field of IT, I would focus on advancing healthcare technology to make medical services more efficient, accessible, and personalized.
For example, many communities, particularly underserved ones, struggle with healthcare access. By integrating technology we can bridge gaps and ensure that people receive quality medical care regardless of their location or financial situation. I see myself using technology to improve patient outcomes, streamline medical procedures, and ultimately save lives. STEM is not just about science and numbers; it is about making a difference, and that is what excites me the most.

One of the greatest challenges I have faced was the loss of my grandmother. She was a pillar of strength in my life, offering wisdom, comfort, and unconditional love. Her passing was not just a personal loss but a moment that shook my entire perspective on life. I struggled with grief, and for a time, it felt as though the world had lost its color.
However, through this hardship, I learned one of the most valuable lessons: how to find strength in adversity. Instead of letting grief consume me, I chose to honor her memory by embodying the qualities she instilled in me grace, resilience, and kindness. I realized that her legacy lived on through me, in the way I treated others, pursued my dreams, and carried myself with dignity.
In the process, I also learned to lean on my support system. My mother was there to remind me that healing takes time, and my mentors and friends encouraged me to keep pushing forward. This experience taught me that challenges are not meant to break us but to shape us into stronger, more compassionate individuals.
Now, I approach every obstacle with the mindset that I can overcome it. Whether in academics, leadership roles, or my future career in medicine, I know that perseverance and faith will guide me. Losing my grandmother was the hardest thing I have ever endured, but it also gave me a deeper sense of purpose to make her proud and to carry forward the love and wisdom she gave me.
These experiences have shaped me into the person I am today... a driven student with a passion for science, a deep appreciation for the power of technology, and the resilience to overcome any challenge. Whether through medicine, technology, or mentorship, I aim to create a meaningful impact in the world. With the support of scholarships like this, I am one step closer to achieving my dreams and making a difference. As I continue my journey, I am committed to using my education to uplift others, advocate for equitable healthcare, and inspire the next generation. Every challenge I have faced has fueled my determination, and I will honor those who have supported me by striving for excellence and giving back to my community.
Curtis Holloway Memorial Scholarship
Throughout my life, my mother has been my source of strength, guidance, and support. As someone who has grown up in a single-parent household, I have witnessed firsthand the sacrifices she has made to ensure that I have every opportunity to succeed. She has played the role of both mother and father, instilling in me the values of hard work, resilience, and determination. Her support has not only shaped my academic ambitions but has also driven me to become a person of integrity, perseverance, and purpose.
My mother’s influence in my life is immeasurable. She has always prioritized my education, emphasizing that knowledge is the key to a better future. She has celebrated my successes, encouraged me through my struggles, and continuously reminded me that I am capable of overcoming any obstacle. It is because of her that I have developed the discipline and work ethic necessary to excel academically and pursue my dreams of becoming an anesthesiologist.
I honor my mother by striving to be the best version of myself. Every accomplishment I achieve is a testament to her sacrifices and dedication. I push myself to succeed because I want to make her proud and show her that all her hard work has not been in vain. Additionally, I honor her by sharing the wisdom she has given to me with others. Just as she has been my guiding light, I aim to mentor and support those around me, offering encouragement and advice to those who may not have the same level of support in their lives.
Her support has been instrumental in my life because, in a single-parent household, the absence of one parent can leave a significant emotional and financial gap. However, my mother has never allowed that absence to define me or limit my potential. She has taught me to focus on what I have rather than what I lack. Her resilience has shown me that adversity does not determine my future or my mindset.
As I continue on my path toward success, I will build on her support by remaining dedicated to my goals, seeking out opportunities for growth, and giving back to my community. I will carry the lessons she has taught me into every aspect of my life, using them to uplift and inspire others. My journey is not just about personal success it is about honoring my mother’s love and sacrifices by creating a future that reflects the values she has instilled in me.
In the end, my mother’s support has been the foundation of my success. She has given me the confidence to chase my dreams, the wisdom to navigate challenges, and the love that fuels my ambition. Because of her, I know that I am capable of achieving greatness, and I will continue to push forward, not just for myself, but for her.
Our Destiny Our Future Scholarship
Growing up, I’ve always been inspired by the idea that helping one person can create a ripple effect, sparking change in ways we can’t always see. Whether through my involvement with Achieve Miami, where I’ve helped young students improve their reading and writing skills, or my leadership roles in school organizations like Rho Kappa and the English Honor Society, I’ve learned the value of service and how small acts of kindness can transform communities. My ultimate goal is to become an anesthesiologist, a career that combines my passion for science with my desire to help others, offering comfort and care during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.
One of the biggest influences in my life was my grandmother, who taught me the importance of compassion and grace. When she passed away, it was one of the hardest moments of my life, but it also ignited a fire within me to carry on her legacy. I wear a bracelet every day to honor her memory, a reminder to approach life with empathy and strength.
In my community, I’ve seen firsthand how systemic barriers can limit opportunities for underrepresented groups. These experiences have fueled my ambition to break down those barriers, both in medicine and beyond. I plan to use my education and career to advocate for equitable healthcare access, particularly for underserved communities. For me, being an anesthesiologist isn’t just about the technical aspects of the job and it’s about treating every patient with dignity and understanding, no matter their background or circumstances.
I also believe in the power of mentorship. Programs like Achieve Miami have shown me how guiding others can create a lasting impact. Whether it’s helping a child grasp a new concept or supporting a peer through a challenging time, I’ve seen how sharing knowledge and encouragement can uplift entire communities. In the future, I hope to establish a mentorship program for students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in healthcare careers, providing them with resources and support to achieve their goals.
Ultimately, my vision for making a positive impact on the world is rooted in service, compassion, and resilience. I want to create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and cared for whether in a hospital room, a classroom, or the wider community. I am committed to living a life that honors the lessons my grandmother instilled in me, using my skills and passion to light the way for others.
This scholarship represents more than just financial support; it’s an opportunity to continue building a legacy of giving, just like the person it honors. With your support, I’ll be one step closer to fulfilling my dreams and leaving a positive, lasting mark on the world.
Lucent Scholarship
My interest in medicine stems from my desire to make an impact whether it’s a small moment of comfort or a life-saving procedure. Growing up, I witnessed the resilience and sacrifices of my mother and grandmother, who taught me the value of compassion and dedication. They both instilled in me the belief that we are here to uplift others. Their influence shaped my view of medicine as not just a career but a calling to bring care and comfort to those in need.
The passing of my grandmother was a defining moment in my journey. She was a source of light and calm in my life, and losing her was devastating. But as I grieved, I found clarity in my purpose. Her strength and grace during her own health battles inspired me to pursue a path where I could ease others’ pain and support them in difficult moments. I want to be the person patients and their families can lean on when they feel most vulnerable, just as my grandmother was for me.
This drive was solidified through my involvement in community service. As an Achieve Miami Scholar, I’ve worked with elementary students, helping them improve their reading and writing skills. While this role didn’t involve medicine, it reinforced my passion for supporting others. I saw how patience, empathy, and encouragement could transform someone’s confidence and outlook. These skills are essential in medicine, especially in anesthesiology, where ensuring patients feel safe and cared for is as important as the procedure itself.
Additionally, my academic interests in science have fueled my curiosity and passion for the field. From chemistry experiments to biology labs, I’ve always been fascinated by the intricate systems that make up the human body and how science can be used to heal and improve lives. This fascination led me to explore healthcare through shadowing opportunities and discussions with medical professionals, further solidifying my commitment to becoming an anesthesiologist.
Moving from the Bronx to Miami also played a significant role in shaping my journey. This transition provided me with a second chance to balance academics and extracurriculars while seeking new opportunities for growth. It introduced me to diverse communities and perspectives, helping me build connections and develop a deeper understanding of how socioeconomic and racial disparities affect access to healthcare. Witnessing these inequities reinforced my desire to use my education and career to address systemic barriers and advocate for underserved communities.
My journey so far has been one of resilience, growth, and purpose. As a BIPOC student, I understand the importance of representation and inclusivity in medicine. I am committed to breaking barriers and serving as a role model for others who aspire to make a difference. My passion for anesthesiology goes beyond the science; it’s about creating a sense of comfort, trust, and care for every patient I encounter.
This scholarship represents more than financial support it’s an opportunity to further my education, deepen my impact, and honor the values instilled in me by my family. With this foundation, I am determined to drive positive change and foster progress in medicine and beyond.
Harriett Russell Carr Memorial Scholarship
Excellence is more than achieving perfection; it’s about striving to be your best self in every moment, embracing challenges, and using your strengths to uplift others. For me, excellence is deeply rooted in the values instilled by my mother and late grandmother, the two women who have shaped my life. Their influence taught me the importance of resilience, grace, and service, values I carry with me daily.
Every day, I strive for excellence by holding myself accountable and giving my best effort in all areas of my life. Whether it’s maintaining high academic standards, actively contributing to clubs, or supporting my peers, I approach every task with dedication and a desire to improve. My leadership as vice president of Rho Kappa History Honor Society, coupled with my involvement in the English Honor Society and my work as a gym assistant, reflect my commitment to not just meeting expectations but exceeding them. These roles have taught me to lead with intention and to remain focused even in the face of adversity.
The passing of my grandmother was a pivotal moment that reshaped my perspective on life. It was during this time that I realized the importance of staying grounded, even when circumstances feel overwhelming. Her memory inspires me to embody calmness and compassion, not only for myself but also for those around me. This lesson has fueled my passion for service, as I believe that giving back to others is one of the greatest forms of excellence.
My community service efforts reflect this philosophy. As an Achieve Miami Scholar, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring younger students, helping them improve their reading and writing skills. This experience has been about more than academic support, it’s been an opportunity to foster confidence and a love of learning in the next generation. Leading without authority, I’ve learned to empower these students while showing them the value of their voices and abilities.
Beyond Achieve Miami, I consistently look for ways to give back, whether through tutoring, babysitting, or volunteering in various capacities. I view these acts as an extension of my belief that true leadership involves serving others and meeting them where they are. Moving to Miami was transformative for me because it not only allowed me to find balance but also introduced me to new opportunities for growth and connection. In building a new community, I learned that family is not always defined by blood but by the bonds we create with those we trust and love.
As I prepare to attend college, I remain committed to using my education and experiences to make a difference. My goal is to pursue a career in anesthesiology, a field where precision, care, and service are paramount. This ambition is driven by my desire to provide comfort to others, whether in the operating room or through other avenues of support.
In every area of my life, I seek to exemplify the spirit of excellence that Harriett Russell Carr embodied. By remaining ambitious, service-oriented, and dedicated to making a difference, I aim to honor her legacy and continue to uplift my community in meaningful ways.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My goal is to become an anesthesiologist, a path that combines my passion for science with my desire to make a meaningful impact on others’ lives. This journey is deeply rooted in the lessons I’ve learned from my mother, Nyasha Maddox, and my late grandmother, Marilyn DeCastro. These two remarkable women have taught me resilience, the value of hard work, and the importance of remaining calm and composed under pressure, qualities essential for an anesthesiologist.
Becoming an anesthesiologist requires dedication, perseverance, and a detailed plan. I am committed to providing compassionate care, ensuring that patients feel safe and secure during some of their most vulnerable moments. My motivation extends beyond personal success; I am driven by the desire to achieve financial stability, create generational wealth, and honor the sacrifices of my mother and grandmother. Pursuing a career in medicine requires significant financial resources, which is why scholarships like this one are vital. The estimated cost of a four-year undergraduate degree, including tuition, fees, books, and living expenses, ranges from $40,000 to $60,000 annually. After completing my undergraduate studies, medical school tuition can range from $50,000 to $70,000 per year. I plan to apply for additional scholarships, federal financial aid, and work-study opportunities to help fund my education. I am also committed to managing my expenses by maintaining a part-time job, such as my current roles in babysitting and tutoring.
The timeline I have created is both realistic and ambitious. I will spend the next four years completing my undergraduate degree in chemistry while gaining clinical experience through internships and shadowing. I am fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead, including the rigorous academic demands and financial burdens of medical school. However, I have already demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity, such as losing my grandmother and balancing academic responsibilities with part-time work. I will continue to lean on the values instilled in me perseverance, discipline, and grace to overcome these challenges.
My plan to become an anesthesiologist is both ambitious and meticulously thought out. I am committed to using every resource available to achieve my goals, including financial aid, mentorship, and personal resilience. With the support of scholarships like this one, I am confident that I will not only reach my goals but also honor the legacy of my mother and grandmother by becoming a compassionate and skilled healthcare provider.

Attending college has always been more than a goal for me; it's a necessity. As someone who aspires to be an anesthesiologist, higher education represents the foundation for my future career and a pathway to achieving financial stability and generational wealth for my family. However, the rising costs of college pose a significant obstacle, making this scholarship vital to my journey.
My motivation to succeed comes from two extraordinary women: my grandmother, Marilyn DeCastro, affectionately known as “Muddah,” and my mother, Nyasha Maddox. These women embody the resilience and grace that I strive to emulate every day. My grandmother, in particular, was a beacon of strength and wisdom, teaching me the importance of humility and perseverance. Her guidance shaped my core values and inspired me to dream bigger. When she passed away on December 13, 2023, my world changed forever. Her loss was one of the most challenging experiences I’ve ever faced, but it also strengthened my resolve to honor her legacy by pushing forward.
Despite my grief, I refused to let it derail my ambitions. I remained focused, returning to school immediately and balancing a demanding schedule of academics, extracurricular activities, and work. Marques D. Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship
I am someone who sees the world through a blend of creativity, resilience, and ambition. Growing up, I was fortunate to be guided by two incredible women: my mother, Nyasha Maddox, and my grandmother, Marilyn DeCastro, known lovingly as "Muddah." Much like Rory Gilmore's relationship with her mother in Gilmore Girls, I feel that I received my life’s blood from these women. They embodied what it means to be strong and compassionate, and their influence has touched every part of who I am today. They taught me the importance of humility, resilience, and remaining true to myself, and they encouraged me to chase my dreams with both strength and grace. Even now, I carry their spirit with me, pushing me forward as I navigate life’s challenges.
Music, singing, and art have always been outlets where I can express myself most fully. These forms of expression allow me to connect with emotions I sometimes struggle to put into words. Singing, in particular, brings me a unique sense of freedom. It's my way of reaching out to others, of creating moments that go beyond words and communicate on a more personal level. Music has been a source of strength for me, and art has provided a space for reflection and creativity, allowing me to share my thoughts and experiences visually. These passions, in many ways, connect me to my family. They remind me of my grandmother’s grace, my mother’s perseverance, and the values they instilled in me.
After high school, I have set ambitious goals for myself. Inspired by my love for science and desire to help others, I plan to pursue a career as an anesthesiologist. This path is more than a career choice; it represents my commitment to making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Medicine is a field where my dedication, curiosity, and empathy can combine, allowing me to serve others during some of their most vulnerable moments. Pursuing anesthesiology is not just about the science for me—it’s about carrying forward the values my family has passed down, using them to make an impact in the lives of others.
My motivations go beyond personal success; I am driven by the desire for financial stability and the creation of generational wealth for my family. I am determined to achieve the stability that my grandmother and mother dreamed of, honoring their legacy by striving for excellence. To reach my goals, I plan to attend college, majoring in chemistry as a foundation for medical school. Moving from New York to Miami has already expanded my horizons, giving me opportunities to connect with diverse perspectives and experiences, and I’m eager to continue that journey in college.
In the end, like Rory, everything I am and everything I aim to become is rooted in the love and guidance of the women who have shaped me. Although my grandmother is no longer here physically, her light and wisdom remain within me. Through my passions, my goals, and my commitment to honoring her legacy, I carry forward the strength, grace, and determination she instilled in me.
