Some of my earliest memories are not of what I heard, but of what I missed. I was born profoundly Deaf, and because of my cochlear implants, years of speech therapy, and learning through spoken language and lip-reading, many people assumed I experienced the world the same way they did. But whenever my cochlear implant batteries died, everything changed. My world became silent. I watched my family laugh, tell stories, and carry on conversations while I wondered what everyone was talking about. I asked, "What did they say?" or "What did I miss?" hoping someone would include me. Sometimes they did. Sometimes they did not. Eventually, I learned to smile when everyone else smiled and laugh when everyone else laughed, even when I had no idea what was happening. As I grew older, I realized my experiences were shaped not only by being Deaf, but also by being a Black woman. I attended a predominantly White public school in a Deaf program where I never had a Black teacher, counselor, or interpreter. At the time, I did not realize what was missing because it was all I had ever known. Looking back, I understand how much representation matters. When you never see someone who looks like you in leadership, it becomes harder to imagine yourself there. That changed when I arrived at Gallaudet University. For the first time, I had Black professors. Seeing Black professionals lead classrooms with confidence changed how I viewed my future. As a Black Deaf woman, I finally saw people who reflected parts of my identity succeeding in higher education. They showed me that earning a master's degree was not just a dream but something I could achieve. More importantly, they inspired me to become the kind of professional who could encourage the next generation of Black Deaf students. My journey to graduate school has not been easy. My schedule was filled with part-time jobs, leadership positions, and financial challenges while I was earning my bachelor's degree in social work. In the midst of my difficult circumstances, I questioned whether or not I would graduate. As the first person in my immediate family to graduate from college, I received an Advanced Standing Master of Social Work degree from Gallaudet University. I am honored to have this opportunity because of my academic growth and commitment to helping others. Being the first is an accomplishment I am proud of, but I hope to not be the last. Graduate school brings significant financial responsibility. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus on my education, clinical training, and professional growth instead of worrying about paying for school. My experiences have shaped the social worker I hope to become. As a Black Deaf woman, I understand what it feels like to search for a sense of belonging, representation, and understanding. For years, I searched for people who reflected both my racial and Deaf identities. Now, I hope to become that person for someone else. Those experiences inspired me to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who serves both Deaf and hearing communities with compassion, cultural humility, and advocacy. I want every person I work with to feel seen, heard, and valued because I know how life-changing that can be. My little girl self often wondered what I had missed. That question no longer occupies my mind. Rather, I strive to create a world where everyone feels like they belong. It would give me the opportunity to earn my master's degree and bring me closer to becoming the representation for which I once aspired.

Early childhood developmental trauma can shape a person’s life in powerful ways. When children experience neglect, emotional instability, or don’t feel safe or supported during their early years, it can impact their confidence, mental health, and ability to form healthy relationships later in life. Many grow up carrying pain they never had the words or space to express. I experienced emotional neglect from my father throughout my childhood. I longed for a close relationship with him... his love, guidance, and presence, but I received distance instead. That absence deeply affected me. It made me question my worth and created a gap I spent years trying to fill. That experience taught me how much children need to feel loved and supported and how damaging it can be when that support is missing. One of the greatest strengths I’ve developed from my childhood is resilience; the ability to fall and get back up, again and again, constantly. I’ve had to push through emotional challenges, family responsibilities, and situations I felt were overlooked. But through that, I’ve also developed strong self-awareness and compassion for those I care about and learned to recognize when others are silently hurting, too. These experiences are the reason I’m becoming a licensed social worker. I don’t plan to be a therapist. Instead, I want to work directly in my community in many different roles: in schools, homeless shelters, foster care systems, nonprofit organizations, and internationally. I want to meet people where they are and help create spaces where they feel seen and safe. I feel especially called to work with youth in foster care. That system is supposed to protect and support them, but often, it fails them. Many of these kids live with fear and instability, constantly feeling like they have no one to count on. I want to change that. One of my biggest dreams is to build a group home where foster youth can feel safe, be themselves, and thrive. I want them to know there’s someone in their corner who truly cares. As someone who is profoundly Deaf and has used a cochlear implant since I was a baby, I’ve also learned how to navigate systems that weren’t built with me in mind. I know how it feels to be overlooked and misunderstood. But I also know how powerful it is to have someone believe in you. This scholarship would help me continue my education and move one step closer to becoming the social worker I’ve always needed and the one I know so many others still do.

It is not a place but a constant journey of self-discovery, persistence, and commitment to helping others. Self-awareness leads to success. Reflecting on my values, beliefs, and experiences, I have understood that personal growth is a continuous process. Some aspects of ourselves are stationary, yet others evolve, but the learning continues. I strive to be open and honest, continually learning who I am and how to better serve others. Being of mixed ethnic descent—Jamaican, Black, and Puerto Rican; I have personally experienced how the lasting effects of colonization and oppression have shaped my community and its resilience. These injustices of the past have shaped my family's strength and fueled my passion to stand for others. My cultural heritage has taught me the importance of family, community, and support networks. I understand how institutionalized social exclusion and discrimination impact people, and I am committed to addressing these issues in my future practice. My cultural heritage provides me with knowledge about the struggles of diverse communities, and thus, I approach social work with cultural competence, sensitivity, and a deep commitment to justice. Becoming an effective social worker requires a firm grasp of intersectionality theory and how multiple identities affect one's experience. Each person has a unique experience; being aware of those differences enables me to give personalized care to needy clients. I want to work closely with clients to make sure their needs are addressed in a manner that is respectful and honoring their cultures. This scholarship will enable me to further hone my skills, build my knowledge, and receive the education needed to make a positive impact. With financial assistance for my studies, I can participate in specialized training programs and fieldwork experiences and learn from professionals committed to social justice. These experiences will enhance my capacity to dismantle barriers, be a voice for marginalized groups, and develop sustainable change. Moreover, being awarded this scholarship will alleviate my financial troubles, enabling me to concentrate fully on my studies and fieldwork, which will equip me for an excellent career in social work. With this scholarship, I can focus entirely on following my passion for assisting others, unencumbered by the limitations of financial hardship. Ultimately, success is personal success and the act of pulling others up. I am dedicated to leveraging my education and life experience to empower others in need and help ensure disadvantaged groups access the services and resources they deserve. **Why I Am Passionate About Philanthropy** As a Deaf Black woman with Jamaican and Puerto Rican roots, my journey has often felt isolating. Growing up in Springfield, Massachusetts, as the only Deaf person in my immediate family, I faced challenges that tested my resilience and compassion. Each obstacle has fueled my desire for advocacy and philanthropy, inspiring me to create opportunities for those in similar circumstances. The strength of my family has been a constant source of inspiration. My mother, who became a parent at 17, worked tirelessly to build a better life for us, balancing her responsibilities with her own education. I admire her courage and determination. Meanwhile, my father's struggles to find steady employment due to systemic barriers faced by many Black men taught me about the harsh realities marginalized communities often encounter. These experiences have shaped my identity and instilled a deep sense of empathy for others enduring similar hardships. My cultural heritage adds another layer to my identity. Embracing my Jamaican and Puerto Rican roots, I appreciate diversity while grappling with the impacts of colonization and oppression. Understanding these historical injustices deepens my awareness of intersectional inequities, especially as I navigate the dual challenges of being Deaf and Black. This understanding fuels my commitment to advocate for those whose voices are often silenced. Witnessing the inequities faced by my peers ignited my passion for philanthropy. In school, I often felt the effects of a lack of accessibility that left many students with disabilities out of the conversation. My personal experience with the denial of Social Security benefits illustrated how systems frequently overlook individuals like me. These injustices reinforced my conviction to advocate for myself and stand up for others grappling with similar challenges. My transformative experience at Gallaudet University allowed me to turn my aspirations into action. As Vice President of the Black Student Union, I worked diligently to create an inclusive space for Black Deaf students. This role taught me the importance of unity and collaboration. Each conversation and shared story underscored the needs for understanding and compassion in our pursuit of change. For me, philanthropy is a deeply personal mission, reflecting my belief in creating systems that uplift others and recognize their inherent worth. I aspire to become a social worker, focusing on culturally responsive programs that address disparities in education, healthcare, and access to resources. My dream includes mentoring youth through organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and collaborating with child welfare agencies to support families in crisis. Additionally, I am passionate about addressing interconnected systemic issues such as climate change and reproductive rights erosion. These matters profoundly affect marginalized communities. Advocating for social justice means adopting an integrated approach that considers the unique challenges faced by those who are often overlooked. Everyone has role models; people have someone they look up to and doubtless stalk on social media. Zendaya may be a perfect model, and he or she could be a lot of things. Zendaya is often taking the globe out of the blue, featuring in movies and television shows, hence empowering young people at the same time and evolving into one of the most vigorous representations of a star today since her youth on the Shake It Up. an ideal example of what young people today is Zendaya: sophisticated, ambitious, articulate, and challenging. She even was the youngest actress to win the Emmy Award for leading actress in Euphoria. Within the meantime, she has also evolved to become an artist, dancer, fashion designer, model, and plenty more. Zendaya helped shaped who I am today and what I would like to pursue within the way forward for becoming a Deaf and African American teacher. Zendaya has positively influenced "Shake It Up" for young girls. Whether it's her presumptuous comebacks on social media or displaying her talent in any movies/tv shows, Zendaya never fails to inspire us to be ourselves. She uses her voice to speak out against colorism, police brutality, and racial victimization of young black men and demonstrate her support for women's and LGBTQ+ rights. Today, young women don't seem willing to abide by the rules or be boxed in. We are cultured, creative, and care about improving the environment, and with the maximum amount of uniqueness as Zendaya, no celebrity embraces these qualities. She may be a model because she remains another reminder of young women and what we can achieve when offered an opportunity and a voice. I can't take all the credit for my life, because it seems many people in my life have helped; family and friends, for instance. My parents and my siblings are the most influences in my life. My parents have a significant impact on my life. Mostly, they taught me everything I do know. My mom taught me a way to be an independent woman. She taught me the money handling basics and interacting with people. My mom is that the reasonable woman has little fear, and when she does, she nips it in her bud. I am unable to get that easy on my insecurities. She tells me daily that I shouldn't care what someone says or feels about me. The only celebrity I always look up to is Zendaya. Unlike other actors, she is a huge inspiration to me. People change your life with good and bad, but in the end, it's all about what you wish. Zendaya is extremely important to me because she's not only an astonishing actress; she's also a very instigating and compassionate person. She came from a low-income family, and she managed to thrive on her own. Zendaya remained modest when she became famous. I respect her for her compassion for others, and she's not afraid to speak her mind. I know she'll always be my role model within the future, and she'll always inspire people and support them.

It's hard to imagine where you're going to be financially for years to come. There's always what you're planning, and there are things that happen unexpectedly. Many people spend their whole lives in need of income, studying to make more money, or eventually making it so we can afford our life's many expenses. Budgeting lets us know just how much we have left to fulfill our secondary needs to meet our necessities. In this way, personal finance and budgeting involve paying for our needs. Budgeting leads to more excellent financial stability for us, but it also keeps us happy and sane. Tracking your spending also makes it easier for you to understand why you're in debt and how you got there. Tracking your expenditures will help you design the right plan to get out of debt. Furthermore, you know where your money is going, and make sure your money's used wisely. Setting financial goals is an essential step towards being financially stable. If you're not working for anything specific, you're likely to spend more than you should. Then you'll come up short when you need money for unexpected payments, not to mention when you want to plan a retirement plan.

A couple of weeks ago, my friend and I went to get our nails done. I regularly chat with the nail tech every time I go. I was having a conversation with my friend in ASL (American Sign Language). My nail tech asked if I knew ASL, I told her yes that I learned how to sign because I am Deaf. You can imagine the look on her face even with the mask on. She was stunned. She had to stop what she was doing to make sure she heard correctly. "Yup, I am Deaf," I chuckled. People have a perception of how Deaf vocalization should sound. Unfortunately, I do not fall under that stereotype. After they hear me speak, they are always dumbfounded when I tell them I am Deaf. Growing up, doctors did not think my speech would be well as it. They thought I would fall behind and not excel as well as I am now. One of my goals is to exceed their expectations and strive to be the best I can be. After one school to another, I finally was at a place where I could excel in total communication and education. Eventually, I was advised to be placed in mainstream classes and participated in the After School Program and extracurricular activities. Furthermore, I am a well-rounded student with tons of awards and achievements. I still maintain an honor roll status throughout the first to eleventh grade while working at MLK Family Services; by completing mini activator lessons, assisting students with homework, and presenting special monthly topics. I was also involved in the after school clubs such as yearbook, Junior National Association for the Deaf (JRNAD), and basketball. I competed in plenty of deaf competitions like Battle of the Book, Math Competition at NTID, and Academic Bowl. I endeavored countless learning opportunities, such as attending Willie Ross School for the Deaf fundraising Gala and one of the Key Spokespersons. In attendance with my school, I also got the privilege to accompany them to Washington, D.C., to help propose a bill to help get more teachers for the Deaf, which is named "Cogswell-Macy Act." My Academic Bowl teammates and I were invited to present at the Shurtleff Foundation Annual Board Meeting. The focus was on after school funds, so we talked about our experiences during the Academic bowl competition, and the Board was in awe. I am always eager to learn and continuously looking for new approaches to build knowledge. I am self-confident and have the ability to overcome obstacles and which is helpful in my education. I enjoy stepping out of my comfort zone and acknowledge other perspectives. I have learned how to stay organized and manage my time while balancing academic and extracurricular activities. I live to inspire other Deaf children with hearing loss to blossom and feel embraced and equity in the hearing world from using my encounters. In addition to strive for Deaf children to retain why education is significant, help them recognize, and accomplish their goals. I want to become a Deaf middle school teacher. In order to obtain, I plan on majoring in Special Education and desire to earn my bachelor's and master's degrees. This is an important reality that Willie Ross has taught me, and I look forward to the future of becoming a teacher so that I can teach them the same.

My name is Nyasia Wright; I am a student at Willie Ross School for the Deaf. I have been attending to Willie Ross since I was in kindergarten. I was born deaf. The doctor couldn't find any diagnosis that explained why I was profoundly deaf. At first, my mom was downhearted because she didn't know how to take care of a deaf baby, but all in all, she knew that everything would be okay because she had and still have a massive system of love and support. I received my first Cochlear Implant when I was around two and a half years old and began attending a school where I wasn't excelling. My family knew that I had the potential for more significant and wanted to see me blossom, which is why they enrolled me in Willie Ross. Getting to come to Willie Ross ended up being the best decision for me. Since I've been attending this school, I have improved my oral communication through Willie Ross with help from the faculty, speech therapy, and mainstream classes for academic knowledge and grow stronger every day in sign language. Willie Ross School for the deaf and teachers supports me while attending mainstream East Longmeadow classes, making new friends, and learning. I embraced deaf culture through deaf events like the math competition at NTID, the Battle of the Books, the Academic Bowl, and more. I even had the privilege of meeting Anthony Natale! You may know him from Switched at Birth. It was a very memorable moment. These things and more have taught me to embrace diversity and have inspired me to go after my dreams no matter what. The world is not always accepting "different" people, but our unique qualities make us special. Have you ever done a puzzle? The pieces are all different, but they come together to create a beautiful picture. No matter our race, gender, sexuality, religion, or disability, maybe I should say different abilities; we can accomplish whatever we put our minds. The things that make us diverse don't hold us back; instead, they are the very things that push us to greatness. This is an important reality that Willie Ross has taught me, and I look forward to becoming a Deaf teacher for middle school by getting my bachelor's and master's degrees in education. I want to support other young Deaf children to understand why education is important, help them realize, and achieve their goals. I want to support other young Deaf children to know why education is important, help them recognize, and achieve their goals. I want to encourage other people and other Deaf children to grow up feeling included and equal to others. From my friends, teachers, coaches, and staff, I know that along with my family, and people who love and support and push me to reach my dreams. Next year when I graduate, the picture will be complete, and I will be able to put the final piece to this puzzle will be done. I am ready and look forward to college and my future.
