I used to live most of my life on the edge---taking a shot of tequila before school at 4, popping pills like it was candy, and snorting line after line of cocaine. I ignored the pleas of those who begged me to stop, until I died---more than once. Seeing their pain mirrored my own, and in that moment of clarity, I realized I needed a different path. Recovery became my choice to live, to step away from the edge of destruction. Recovery is freedom from addiction. It's about living a healthier, drug-free life, owning my choices, and recognizing how my actions affect others. Recovery is about confronting the past, letting go of ego, and embracing humility. It's finding a new perspective, correcting wrongs, and focusing on personal growth over blame. It's looking in the mirror and recognizing that I am my biggest challenge---not others. Recovery means doing the next right things, even when no one else is watching. Today, at 19, I am one year clean and growing healthier every day. I've connected with those I hurt, damaged, and betrayed, owned up to my mistakes, sought help, and regularly attended AA meetings. My mind feels clear, and I'm no longer staggering on the verge of death. I am on a new path---finding myself, healing, and embracing a life without drugs. I don't need benzodiazepines to escape the chaos. I don't need a line of cocaine, or a shot of tequila to start my day anymore.
