My grandfather's decision to immigrate from Puerto Rico in the early 1970s was driven by the pursuit of better opportunities, despite facing meager earnings of only $20 per week. In an era marked by limited educational and community support, families like ours often found themselves relying on what was termed "The Street Life" for survival. At just nine years old, my life took a drastic turn as I entered the foster care system due to my mother's heroin addiction and my father's incarceration for attempted murder. Severed from my family and siblings, I was thrust into a world where I had to learn to fend for myself, drawing strength from emotions of anger, fear, and disappointment. By the time I reached seventeen, I found myself grappling with the responsibilities of parenthood while still navigating my educational journey. Unable to continue schooling, I ventured into the workforce, enduring a transient lifestyle that often saw us residing in shelters and hotels. It became evident to me that I needed to break the cycle that had been passed down through generations of my family. Eventually, we managed to secure a modest one-bedroom apartment, where I took on the added responsibility of caring for my partner's children from a previous marriage when they, too, became entangled in the foster care system. Balancing a full-time third-shift job at a K-mart warehouse with waitressing at the Ground Round Restaurant, I defied stereotypes and persevered, even taking on a second job at Walmart. Despite the numerous challenges and relocations, we faced, I remained steadfast in my determination to find stability and pursue a career aligned with my passion for helping others. From serving as an assistant teacher for children with autism to transitioning into a role as a residential counselor for foster youth, I found fulfillment in making a difference in the lives of others. Tragedy struck in 2009 with the sudden loss of my children's father in a canoe accident, thrusting me into the role of a single parent. Despite the immense emotional toll, I worked tirelessly, clocking 80-hour weeks to provide for my family both emotionally and financially. In 2012, I made a conscious decision to break the cycle of adversity by obtaining my GED and leveraging community resources to become the first homeowner in my family. Today, seventeen years later, I remain committed to my job while dedicating myself to supporting youth aging out of the system.     My father use to say "what is meant to be, will be, and what’s not, just means something else is looking to find its way."Today, I’m choosing to give you my story in a more genuine way so, I thought I would start by introducing myself, my name is Norma Wallace, and I am a 44-year-old freshman at Mass Bay Community College. I am a single mother of three, with a grandchild who is autistic. Which my son has custody of due to no help from the maternal family. I am a first-generation Latina student who was brought up in the foster care system. I was 16 when I left school and worked all my life. I work in the Human Services field helping children with their Mental Health, trauma, and life skills. I decided to get my GED in 2017 after realizing I needed to further my education but then put off going to college due to work. Then the Covid pandemic hit. I continued working through the pandemic as I was an essential worker. With the shortage in the Human Services field those who were working were getting burned out rapidly, myself included. It was at that time that I realized I needed to return to school to be able to advance in my career or look for another career that would help me better provide for my family. So, I enrolled in the Mass Bay Community College part-time doing three classes. Things were good at the beginning of the semester then work had crisis after crisis. This resulted in me having to miss classes, and assignments, then ended with me withdrawing from classes. I decided that I needed to prioritize work due to it being my only income to provide the roof over our heads. In 2022, I enrolled in school again, Two semesters later and I have a 3.7 GPA and I am working hard to maintain good grades. Although, it’s not as easy as it sounds and find myself up for long hours of the night. Work-life balance is hard enough without adding the school piece to the scenario. But I find that making time each day to do just a little more helps. The most challenging is how to make sure I have enough time. When people ask me, how do I do it? I simply say “I just don’t think about it” I am only human, so I struggle and have my days. When you are doing well in other areas, something else always falls behind. Trying to balance everything must be the greatest challenge. I feel bad for my children the most, I feel like they get the short end of the stick. I hate that it takes away from their ability to be teenagers like every other kid. Instead of doing sports and hanging out after school with friends. This scholarship would help me with my plan to obtain my degree, which would allow me to gain a better income and be able to provide my children with a better life. It would also allow me to be home more. With a degree, I would be able to build a small family business one day, put my kid through college, and get my grandson the care he requires. I hope that with me working this hard they wouldn’t have to, or maybe their children wouldn’t have to. I just want to create a life that would allow me to enjoy family and have time to just take in the beauty of life.
