Legacy is not built through one moment of success, but through a lifetime of meaningful work and service to others. The legacy I hope to create centers around helping people understand their bodies, restore balance in their health, and feel empowered to take control of their well-being.
I graduated high school at fifteen and quickly learned how to balance responsibility with ambition. Since then, I have worked while pursuing my education and taking on many of my own financial responsibilities, including paying for my schooling. Growing up with limited financial resources has taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of building a future that not only supports myself but also allows me to help others.
My passion lies in holistic healthcare, particularly the combination of nutrition and Traditional Chinese Medicine. I became fascinated with the idea that the body is not simply a collection of symptoms to treat, but an interconnected system that must be supported through nutrition, lifestyle, emotional health, and balance. Traditional Chinese Medicine teaches that when the body’s systems are in harmony, it has a powerful ability to heal.
Through my education, I am learning how nutrition and daily habits influence the body’s energy, organ systems, and overall well-being. Many people today struggle with chronic fatigue, digestive problems, hormonal imbalance, and stress-related illness without understanding the deeper causes behind these issues. Too often, they are given temporary solutions rather than guidance that helps restore long-term health.
One day, I hope to create my own holistic health clinic where individuals can receive personalized support through nutrition guidance and principles rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine. My goal is to create a space where people feel heard, understood, and supported as they work toward restoring balance in their health.
Alongside the clinic, I hope to develop my own line of natural wellness products such as herbal formulas, teas, and topical remedies that support the same healing principles practiced within the clinic. These products would allow individuals to continue supporting their health at home while learning how natural approaches can strengthen the body over time.
However, my vision goes beyond simply starting a business. I want to create a place that focuses on education and empowerment. Many communities lack access to preventative health education, and I believe that teaching people how nutrition, lifestyle, and emotional well-being influence their health can have a powerful ripple effect. When one person learns how to support their health, that knowledge often spreads to families and communities.
Shining my light means using my curiosity, compassion, and determination to help others live healthier and more balanced lives. It means continuing to learn, sharing knowledge with others, and building something that allows people to feel hopeful about their health rather than overwhelmed by it.
The legacy I hope to leave is not just a successful clinic or business, but a meaningful impact on the lives of the people I serve. By helping individuals understand their bodies and restore balance through nutrition and Traditional Chinese Medicine, I hope to contribute to healthier communities and a more compassionate approach to healthcare.
Through dedication, education, and service, I hope my work will inspire others to pursue wellness, knowledge, and a deeper understanding of the body’s ability to heal.
Robert F. Lawson Fund for Careers that Care
Growing up, I learned early that responsibility and compassion often go hand in hand. I graduated high school at fifteen and quickly stepped into adulthood, balancing work, education, and many of my own financial responsibilities. Because of my family’s circumstances, I have largely been responsible for paying for my own schooling while continuing to work and pursue my academic goals. Although these challenges have not always been easy, they have shaped my determination to build a career dedicated to helping others.
My interest in healthcare grew from a desire to understand how the body truly heals. Over time, I became fascinated by the connection between nutrition, lifestyle, emotional health, and overall well-being. Many people struggle with chronic fatigue, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, and stress-related conditions without ever receiving guidance that addresses the deeper causes of these problems.
This curiosity led me to pursue studies in holistic nutrition and develop a strong interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). What draws me to this field is its focus on treating the whole person rather than simply addressing symptoms. Traditional Chinese Medicine recognizes that the body is an interconnected system where balance between nutrition, lifestyle, emotional health, and environment plays a critical role in well-being.
One of the principles that resonates with me most is the idea that food itself can be medicine. Nutrition has the power to support the body’s energy, strengthen organ systems, and help restore balance when imbalances occur. Through my education, I am learning how thoughtful dietary choices and lifestyle practices can play a powerful role in preventing illness and improving long-term health.
My goal is to combine my studies in nutrition with the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine to help individuals better understand their bodies and take an active role in their health. Many people feel overwhelmed or unsupported when facing ongoing health concerns, especially when they are only offered temporary solutions to their symptoms. I hope to help bridge that gap by educating people about preventative health and holistic approaches that support lasting wellness.
Beyond individual care, I hope to contribute to creating healthier communities by helping people understand the connection between daily habits and long-term well-being. When individuals learn how to support their health through nutrition, lifestyle choices, and balanced living, that knowledge can positively influence families and communities as well.
Although my journey has required balancing work, school, and financial responsibility at a young age, these experiences have strengthened my commitment to pursuing a career in healthcare. I believe that everyone deserves access to knowledge and guidance that empowers them to live healthier lives.
Through my education and future work, I hope to use my skills in holistic nutrition and Traditional Chinese Medicine to help people restore balance in their lives and build healthier futures for themselves and those around them.

My decision to pursue a career in healthcare did not come from a single dramatic moment, but rather from a growing realization that health is far more complex than simply treating symptoms. Over time, I began noticing how deeply connected our physical health, emotional well-being, nutrition, and daily habits truly are. That realization ultimately led me to pursue studies in holistic nutrition and develop a strong interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
I graduated high school at fifteen and stepped into adulthood quickly, balancing work, education, and many of my own financial responsibilities. Through those experiences, I began to notice how stress, exhaustion, and lifestyle choices affected both my physical and mental well-being. It became clear to me that health is not simply something that happens in a doctor’s office, it is shaped by the way we live every day.
As I explored different approaches to health, I became especially interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). What inspired me most about this field is its philosophy of treating the body as an interconnected system rather than a collection of isolated problems. TCM recognizes that nutrition, emotional health, environment, and lifestyle all influence the body’s balance. Rather than only addressing symptoms, it seeks to understand the root cause of imbalance and support the body’s natural ability to heal.
This philosophy resonated deeply with me and aligned naturally with my studies in nutrition. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, food is considered one of the most powerful forms of medicine. Nutrition can strengthen organ systems, support energy flow, and help restore balance in the body. Through my education, I am learning how thoughtful dietary choices and lifestyle practices can help prevent illness and support long-term health.
My inspiration to pursue this path is rooted in a desire to help people better understand their bodies and take an active role in their well-being. Many individuals struggle with chronic stress, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, and fatigue without ever receiving guidance that addresses the underlying causes of their health challenges. I hope to bridge that gap by combining nutrition education with Traditional Chinese Medicine principles to help individuals restore balance and improve their quality of life.
In the future, I hope to use my education to empower people with knowledge about preventative health and holistic healing. By helping individuals understand how nutrition, lifestyle, and emotional health influence the body, I believe we can create healthier communities and a more compassionate approach to healthcare.
The moment that inspired me to pursue healthcare was realizing that true healing comes from understanding the whole person. That realization continues to guide both my education and my goal of helping others achieve lasting health and balance.

My interest in healthcare began with a growing curiosity about how the body heals and how many health problems stem from deeper imbalances rather than isolated symptoms. This curiosity led me to study holistic nutrition and develop a strong interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a healthcare system that focuses on restoring balance in the body and addressing the root causes of illness.
I graduated high school at fifteen and quickly stepped into adult responsibilities. Since then I have balanced work, education, and many of my own financial responsibilities while pursuing my academic goals. Because of my family’s circumstances, I am largely responsible for paying for my own schooling. Although this responsibility has not always been easy, it has strengthened my discipline and commitment to building a meaningful future in healthcare.
Alongside my education, volunteering has also shaped my desire to work in a field focused on helping others. While volunteering at the Hope Center, I saw firsthand how closely physical health, emotional well-being, and life circumstances are connected. Many individuals were facing stress, exhaustion, and health challenges that affected their ability to thrive. That experience reinforced my belief that healthcare should focus not only on treating illness, but also on understanding the deeper factors influencing a person’s well-being.
This perspective is one of the reasons I feel drawn to Traditional Chinese Medicine. TCM views health as a dynamic balance between the body, mind, and environment. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, it seeks to understand the underlying patterns that lead to imbalance in the body.
My current studies in holistic nutrition pair naturally with this philosophy. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, food is considered one of the most powerful forms of medicine. Nutrition plays a central role in supporting the body’s energy, organ systems, and overall balance. Through my studies, I am learning how food, lifestyle habits, and emotional health all influence the body’s ability to heal and maintain equilibrium.
By combining nutrition with the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I hope to help individuals understand how everyday choices such as diet, stress management, and lifestyle habits, can profoundly influence long-term health. Many modern health concerns, including digestive issues, hormonal imbalance, chronic fatigue, and stress-related illness, can often be improved by addressing the root causes rather than simply managing symptoms.
In the future, I hope to build a career focused on helping people restore balance in their lives through nutrition education and holistic health principles rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine. My goal is to empower individuals to better understand their bodies and take an active role in their own well-being.
Although my journey has required balancing work, school, and financial responsibility at a young age, these experiences have strengthened my determination to pursue a career dedicated to helping others live healthier and more balanced lives.
JK and Mary Ann Newville Memorial Engineering and Nursing Scholarship
Mental health has shaped the way I see people, relationships, and the type of career I want to pursue. Through my own experiences with stress, responsibility at a young age, and learning how closely mental and physical health are connected, I have developed a deep belief that caring for someone’s well-being means looking at the whole person.
I graduated high school at fifteen and quickly stepped into adult responsibilities. Since then I have balanced working, pursuing my education, and managing many of my own financial responsibilities, including paying for my schooling and supporting myself. Learning to navigate those pressures at a young age has not always been easy, and it has made me more aware of how stress, exhaustion, and emotional strain can affect both the mind and body.
These experiences have shaped my beliefs about health and the way people should be supported. I believe mental health is often overlooked in our society, even though it influences nearly every part of our lives. When people are overwhelmed, anxious, or exhausted, it impacts their relationships, physical health, and ability to thrive. Because of this, I believe true healthcare must acknowledge the connection between mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
My experiences have also influenced the way I approach relationships with others. Going through periods of stress and pressure has made me more compassionate toward people who may be struggling silently. Many people carry burdens that others cannot see. Because of this, I try to approach others with patience, empathy, and understanding. Sometimes the most meaningful support we can offer someone is simply listening, showing kindness, and reminding them that they are not alone.
These lessons have also guided my career aspirations. I am currently studying holistic nutrition and have a strong interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine and integrative health. What draws me to this field is the belief that health is not just about treating symptoms but understanding the root causes of imbalance. Mental stress, lifestyle, nutrition, and emotional well-being are all deeply interconnected.
In the future, I hope to build a career helping people understand how to restore balance in their lives through nutrition, lifestyle changes, and holistic health practices. I want to help individuals recognize how mental health and physical health influence one another and empower them with tools to support both.
Experiencing stress and responsibility at a young age has not discouraged me; instead, it has strengthened my purpose. It has shown me that resilience grows through challenges and that compassion often comes from understanding hardship.
My experiences with mental health have shaped not only how I care for myself but how I hope to care for others. They have guided me toward a career focused on helping people find balance, healing, and strength in both their minds and bodies.

Growing up, I learned early that responsibility and compassion often go hand in hand. I graduated high school at fifteen and began working soon after. Since then, I have balanced work, education, and family responsibilities while pursuing my goals. Because of my family’s financial circumstances, I am largely responsible for paying for my own education. While that has been challenging at times, it has also strengthened my determination and appreciation for the opportunity to learn.
One of the most meaningful experiences that shaped my perspective was volunteering at the Hope Center, a nonprofit organization that serves individuals and families in need within our community. During my time there, I saw firsthand how much small acts of kindness can matter. Sometimes helping meant organizing resources or assisting with programs, but often it was simply listening to someone who needed to feel seen and supported. That experience taught me that compassion is not just a feeling,it is a commitment to showing up for others when they need it most.
These experiences have guided the direction of my education and career goals. I am currently studying holistic nutrition with a strong interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine and integrative health. I believe that health should be approached by looking at the whole person, mind, body, and environment. Many people struggle with chronic fatigue, digestive problems, hormonal imbalances, and stress-related illnesses without ever receiving support that addresses the root causes of their health challenges.
My goal is to help bridge that gap by educating people about nutrition, lifestyle, and natural approaches to wellness. I hope to build a career focused on accessible, community-centered health education. In the future, I would like to create programs and resources that help individuals and families learn how to nourish their bodies, manage stress, and restore balance through sustainable lifestyle changes and traditional healing practices.
What inspires me most is seeing how knowledge can create a ripple effect. When one person learns how to take care of their health, that knowledge often spreads to their family, friends, and community. Health becomes something that grows through shared understanding and support.
Although I am still early in my academic journey, I have already learned that meaningful impact does not come from grand gestures alone. It comes from persistence, continuing to pursue education despite obstacles, working hard to support oneself, and choosing to help others whenever possible.
Receiving this scholarship would ease the financial burden of continuing my education and allow me to focus more fully on developing the knowledge and skills needed to serve others. More importantly, it would help me move closer to my goal of improving the well-being of the communities around me.
I believe that the greatest achievements are not measured by personal success alone, but by how we use our opportunities and knowledge to make life better for others.
Women in Healthcare Scholarship
My decision to pursue a career in healthcare developed from a growing curiosity about how the body heals and how daily habits influence long-term well-being. Over time, I began to realize that many health challenges people face are deeply connected to lifestyle, nutrition, and balance within the body. This realization inspired me to pursue education in holistic nutrition so that I can help others better understand how their everyday choices influence their health.
One of the perspectives that has particularly shaped my interest in healthcare is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM approaches health through the idea that the body functions best when it is in balance. Rather than focusing only on treating symptoms after illness develops, it emphasizes supporting the body’s natural systems so that disease may be prevented or minimized. Concepts such as balance, nourishment, and the connection between lifestyle and health have deeply influenced how I view wellness.
In modern healthcare, many people struggle with chronic conditions such as digestive disorders, autoimmune issues, metabolic disease, and persistent fatigue. While medical treatment is often necessary, I believe there is also tremendous value in helping individuals understand how nutrition and daily habits influence these conditions. By combining evidence-based nutrition with holistic principles such as those found in TCM, healthcare providers can help people address health challenges from a more comprehensive perspective.
As a woman entering the healthcare field, I hope to contribute to a more compassionate and educational approach to health. Many people feel overwhelmed by conflicting nutrition advice or restrictive diet trends. My goal is to help simplify these conversations by teaching individuals and families how to nourish their bodies in ways that are practical and sustainable. This may include helping people understand balanced meals, the importance of whole foods, and how lifestyle habits such as sleep, stress management, and movement contribute to overall health.
Traditional Chinese Medicine also highlights the importance of treating each person as an individual rather than applying a single approach to everyone. This philosophy resonates deeply with me. Every person’s body, lifestyle, and health history are different, and effective healthcare should reflect those differences. By listening carefully to individuals and helping them understand their own bodies, healthcare providers can empower people to make meaningful changes that support long-term well-being.
In my future career, I hope to educate people on how nutrition can support both prevention and healing. Through community education, one-on-one guidance, and accessible health information, I want to help individuals feel more confident in caring for their health. My goal is not only to address illness but also to help people build stronger foundations for lifelong wellness.
Healthcare continues to evolve, and I believe the future will increasingly recognize the value of integrating nutrition, lifestyle education, and holistic principles into patient care. By pursuing this path, I hope to contribute to a healthcare environment that values prevention, balance, and the empowerment of individuals to take an active role in their health.

Not every meaningful influence in our lives comes from someone we perfectly agree with or fully understand. Sometimes the people who shape us the most are those whose actions teach us important lessons, even when the relationship itself is complicated. For me, one of those people is my stepfather, Josh, who served in the military.
Josh and I have not always seen eye to eye. Like many step-parent relationships, ours has had its challenges. However, over time I began to notice something about him that I could not ignore: his deep sense of faith and his commitment to obedience and discipline. These qualities, shaped in part by his military experience, have quietly influenced the way I view responsibility, perseverance, and personal character.
One of the things that stands out most about Josh is his dedication to living according to his beliefs. Even when life becomes stressful or unpredictable, he remains steady in his faith and committed to doing what he believes is right. Watching this has shown me that faith is not just something someone talks about, it is something that becomes visible through daily actions. Consistency, especially during difficult moments, reveals what someone truly values.
His military background also reflects a strong sense of duty and perseverance. The discipline required to serve in the military requires sacrifice, commitment, and the willingness to put something greater than yourself first. While I have not personally experienced military service, observing the mindset it creates has helped me understand the importance of resilience and responsibility.
What I have learned from Josh is not necessarily about agreeing with every decision or perspective someone has. Instead, it is about recognizing the strength it takes to remain faithful to your principles and to carry out responsibilities even when they are difficult. That example has encouraged me to approach my own life with a greater sense of accountability.
As I pursue my education and future career, I carry those lessons with me. Discipline and perseverance are essential qualities for achieving long-term goals, especially when balancing work, school, and personal responsibilities. Watching someone consistently live according to their beliefs has reminded me that character is often revealed through the choices we make when no one is watching.
Perhaps the most important lesson I have learned is that influence does not always come from perfect relationships. Sometimes it comes from observing qualities in others that challenge us to grow. Even when relationships are imperfect, they can still leave a meaningful impact.
Through Josh’s example of faith, discipline, and obedience, I have gained a deeper understanding of the importance of living with integrity and perseverance. Those lessons continue to guide the way I approach my goals, my education, and the person I strive to become.

Nutrition has the power to change lives in ways many people do not fully realize. In recent years, research has increasingly shown that the food we eat plays a critical role in the prevention, progression, and sometimes even the regression of many chronic illnesses. Learning about this connection has deeply shaped my academic goals and my desire to help others live healthier lives.
I am currently pursuing education in holistic nutrition because I believe that health should be approached by considering the whole person body, mind, and lifestyle. Many people struggle with chronic conditions such as heart disease, autoimmune disorders, or digestive issues without realizing how significantly daily nutrition habits influence their health. My goal in the future is to help individuals understand that nutrition is not about strict dieting or temporary changes, but about building sustainable habits that support long-term well-being.
If awarded this scholarship, I hope to continue developing the knowledge and skills needed to educate others about practical, accessible nutrition strategies. One of the most important lessons I have learned is that information alone is not always enough to change behavior. Many people feel overwhelmed by conflicting health advice, restrictive diet trends, or complicated nutrition guidelines. Because of this, education must be both compassionate and realistic.
In my future career, I hope to focus on helping people understand nutrition in ways that feel approachable rather than intimidating. This means teaching individuals and families how to build balanced meals, understand the role of whole foods, and recognize how nutrition interacts with factors such as stress, sleep, and daily lifestyle habits. By simplifying complex nutritional science into practical everyday choices, people can begin to feel empowered rather than discouraged.
Another important part of my approach will be emphasizing prevention. Many serious health conditions develop gradually over years, often influenced by long-term dietary patterns. By educating people early about the importance of nutrient-dense foods, balanced meals, and consistent habits, it may be possible to reduce the risk of many chronic diseases before they become severe.
I also believe that improving quality of life involves more than simply preventing illness. Nutrition can support energy levels, mental clarity, emotional well-being, and resilience throughout life. Helping people understand these connections allows them to see food not as an obstacle or restriction, but as a tool that supports overall health.
Ultimately, my goal is to use my education to help others build healthier relationships with food and better understand how their daily choices influence their well-being. By combining evidence-based nutrition knowledge with a compassionate and realistic approach to education, I hope to empower individuals and families to make choices that improve both the quality and longevity of their lives.
Through continued learning and dedication to this field, I hope to contribute to a future where more people have access to clear, supportive nutrition guidance that helps them live healthier and fuller lives.
Tawkify Meaningful Connections Scholarship
One of the most meaningful relationships in my life has been my friendship with my best friend. While many people assume that the most influential relationships are with parents, teachers, or mentors, this friendship has shaped my character, my understanding of others, and the way I approach connection in everyday life.
Friendship has a unique way of revealing who we truly are. With my best friend, I learned that authentic relationships are built not through perfection, but through honesty, trust, and the willingness to support each other through both ordinary and difficult moments. There were times when conversations lasted for hours, where we shared thoughts about life, struggles, and hopes for the future. Through those moments, I began to understand how powerful it can be simply to listen and to be present for someone.
This relationship taught me that genuine connection requires patience and empathy. Many people move quickly through life, often distracted by responsibilities, technology, or stress. It can be easy to overlook how deeply people need to feel heard and understood. Through my friendship, I realized that sometimes the most meaningful way to care for someone is simply to give them your attention and understanding without judgment.
That lesson has shaped the way I interact with others in my daily life. Working in a coffee house, I see people from all walks of life come through the doors each day. Some are cheerful and energetic, while others arrive carrying visible exhaustion or quiet sadness. Because of what I have learned through my friendship, I try to approach each interaction with kindness and attentiveness. Even small moments, remembering someone’s regular order, offering a genuine smile, or taking a moment to ask how someone is doing can create a sense of connection.
These experiences have also influenced my long-term goals. I am pursuing education in holistic health and nutrition because I believe caring for people involves more than simply addressing physical symptoms. True wellness involves supporting the whole person, body, mind, and emotional well-being. The ability to listen, understand, and build trust will be just as important in that field as the knowledge I gain through my studies.
My friendship has shown me that relationships have the power to shape the way we move through the world. Through shared conversations, encouragement during difficult times, and simple everyday moments, I learned that meaningful connections are built through consistency and care. Those lessons now influence how I build relationships with coworkers, customers, and the people around me. And my relationship with my coworkers is amazing they really are like family to me. We throw eachother birthday celebrations at work with all of their favorites!
In a world increasingly driven by technology and fast-paced communication, authentic relationships have become more important than ever. They remind us that human connection cannot be replaced by convenience or efficiency. It requires presence, empathy, and the willingness to truly see one another.
Because of the influence of my best friend, I now carry those values into every area of my life. Whether through my work, my education, or my future career, I hope to continue building relationships that reflect kindness, understanding, and genuine connection.
The friendship that helped shape me is a reminder that sometimes the most powerful influences in our lives come from the people who simply choose to walk beside us.
Patricia Lindsey Jackson Foundation - Eva Mae Jackson Scholarship of Education
Faith has been one of the most grounding forces in my life, shaping not only how I see the world but also the direction of my education and future goals. For me, faith is not just something practiced in church or spoken about in theory; it is something that shows up in the quiet decisions of daily life, how I treat others, how I respond to challenges, and how I pursue the work I feel called to do. My heart should reflect Christ in all that I do!
I graduated early and began balancing work and college while many people my age were still figuring out their next steps. That path has not always been easy. There have been moments where the responsibilities of work, school, and life felt overwhelming. However, my faith has consistently reminded me that perseverance and purpose often grow through difficulty. Scripture teaches that every person is created with unique gifts, and I have come to believe that part of honoring those gifts is committing to growth and education, even when the road requires sacrifice.
One place where I have seen this lesson unfold is in my work at a coffee house. At first glance, it might seem like an ordinary job, but over time I began to understand that it was also a place where I could practice service. People walk through those doors carrying their lives with them, stress, loneliness, celebration, exhaustion, and hope. Through simple acts like listening, offering encouragement, or treating each person with patience and dignity, I have learned that small moments of kindness can make a meaningful impact. I’ve gotten to pray with customers , one of the beautiful testimonials was this one woman I prayed with she was very sick so before she left I said let’s pray right now! I prayed a short prayer , she left. 3 days later she came back to tell me that the very next day after we had prayed she felt almost completely better.
My faith has taught me that serving others does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes it simply requires being present, patient, and willing to see people as individuals worthy of care and respect. These daily interactions have strengthened my belief that service and leadership often begin with humility. Leadership is not about authority; it is about responsibility, choosing to bring compassion, integrity, and consistency into the environments we are part of.
This perspective has deeply influenced my academic goals. I am currently pursuing education in holistic health and nutrition because I believe caring for others involves more than addressing symptoms; it involves supporting the whole person body, mind, and spirit. Using what God gave us and not human made drugs that harm us further because we as humans fall short and make mistakes but our God is perfect! My desire is to eventually help people live healthier, more balanced lives by combining scientific knowledge with a compassionate approach to care.
Faith continues to guide that vision. It reminds me that the purpose of education is not simply personal success but the ability to serve others more effectively. Every class I take and every skill I develop is part of preparing for that larger calling.
Higher education, for me, is not just about earning a degree. It is about building the knowledge and character necessary to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. My faith, my work experiences, and the people I encounter every day continue to push me toward that goal.
Through perseverance, service, and a commitment to growth, I hope to use my education to create spaces where people feel supported, understood, and empowered to care for their health and well-being.
Patricia Lindsey Jackson Foundation-Mary Louise Lindsey Service Scholarship
When people think of service, they often imagine organized volunteer work or mission trips. For me, service has often looked much quieter standing behind the counter of a small coffee house and learning how to truly see the people who walk through the door.
I began volunteering at a coffee shop when I was young, while also balancing school and responsibilities at home. At first, I thought my job was simply to make drinks and keep the line moving. But over time I realized that the coffee house was more than a place people came for caffeine. It was a place where people came carrying their lives with them; stress from work, loneliness, grief, celebration, or simply the need to feel noticed.
One moment that stayed with me happened during a particularly busy shift. A regular customer came in looking exhausted and withdrawn. Normally he joked with the staff, but that day he barely spoke. As I handed him his drink, I paused and I followed him to wear he sat down, and asked how he was doing. That small moment opened a conversation where he shared that he was going through a difficult time. He had just lost all his money because his account had just been hacked. I listened, offered encouragement, and simply treated him with patience and kindness. It wasn’t a dramatic act of service, but it reminded me that sometimes the most meaningful way we serve others is by acknowledging their humanity. Although I could not help him with this painful burden I stayed and let him know I saw him and he is cared for.
Working in the coffee house has taught me that leadership often happens through small daily choices. It looks like showing patience when a line is long, treating every customer with respect, helping coworkers when they feel overwhelmed, and creating an atmosphere where people feel welcome. Service does not always require a title or a large stage; sometimes it happens quietly through consistency and compassion.
My faith has deeply shaped how I view these moments. Scripture teaches that loving others is one of the most important ways we reflect God’s character in the world. I began to understand that even ordinary interactions can become opportunities to practice that love. Whether offering a kind word, remembering someone’s usual order, or listening when someone needs to talk, these small acts reflect a deeper calling to care for others.
The experience has also shaped my understanding of leadership. True leadership is not about authority; it is about responsibility. It is choosing to bring patience, kindness, and integrity into everyday situations, even when no one is watching.
Through my work, I have learned that meaningful impact does not always come from large, visible achievements. Sometimes it comes from the quiet decision to treat people with dignity and compassion in ordinary places. For me, the coffee house has become one of those places, a reminder that service can begin with something as simple as a warm drink, a listening ear, and a willingness to care.
