My name is Nolan Blewitt. I am a high school senior at a trade school in an Automotive Technology program and will be attending the University of Northwestern Ohio's (UNOH) high-performance automotive program in the Fall of 2024. I have always had a passion for everything automotive, as well as a desire to learn as much as possible about the way cars operate to get a better understanding of them. The automotive industry gives me the perfect opportunity to display my passion, knowledge, and work ethic. The effort I put into my Automotive classes has been recognized through a Trade Excellence award, which I have received my previous three years of schooling. I competed in our state SkillsUSA competition the past 3 years, finishing 9th in the state this year for automotive technicians. I also finished top 10 in the state on my ASE entrance exam, which afforded me an opportunity to compete in an auto repair competition this past month.
Outside of school, I work as an entry-level technician at an Automotive garage where I can learn about the fast-paced atmosphere of a professional shop. Innovation and being at the cutting edge of technology is an always present theme in the automotive industry, and this means that technicians must face different challenges all the time. I enjoy the challenge of working on all types of models and figuring out the different components and technologies used by manufacturers, both at my high school and at my job.
While I am going to school to be an Automotive Technician, my real passion has always been racing, specifically NASCAR. My dad introduced me to NASCAR when I was younger and since then I have wanted to be there on Sundays working on the cars. The high-performance automotive program at UNOH will help me become an auto mechanic in the racing world. I have also volunteered my time at a local racetrack for a couple of years now, helping with car setup and preparation for races, not to mention the occasional pit stop when things go awry.
I feel that I can impact motorsports by sharing my passion with race teams and race fans. I want people in our country and around the world to enjoy watching motorsports as much as I do and bring more popularity to the sport. I plan to make this impact by always trying to learn new things and persevering through mistakes to inspire the next generation of auto technicians. Through listening to my instructors and my boss, I have learned that mistakes are part of the learning process. To make them meaningful you have to learn from them. In becoming an auto mechanic on a race team, I also plan to make an impact by ensuring the safety of our drivers by recognizing errors before the car makes it onto the track.
This scholarship can help me to reach my goal by providing me with financial assistance to complete the 3 year high-performance automotive program at UNOH. The financial support will allow me to focus on my studies and trade, and to worry less about loan repayments. I thank you for this opportunity to submit my application.
Joe Ford Trade Scholarship
I am a high school senior at a trade school in an Automotive Technology program. I chose to pursue a career in the automotive industry because I have always had a passion for everything automotive, as well as a desire to learn as much as possible about the way cars operate to get a better understanding of them. While I am going to school to be an Automotive Technician, my real passion has always been racing, specifically NASCAR. My dad introduced me to NASCAR when I was younger and since then I have wanted to be there on Sundays working on the cars
Some examples of my ability to be creative and problem solve come from my time in a trade school and at my job at a local repair shop. Firstly, a Jeep Grand Cherokee at my work had a hood ajar message on the dashboard that would not turn off. After I used a scan tool to check trouble codes on the vehicle, I found a code for an error on the start/stop system. Through following a flow chart and testing electrical connections, I determined that the vehicle's secondary hood switch was broken, and the start/stop system would not operate with a hood ajar message. Another example of my problem-solving skills was in my junior year of automotive when I had to diagnose a misfire on a Honda Odyssey. I inspected the spark plug, tested the ignition coil, tested the ignition control module, and still couldn't figure out the problem. I then tested voltage from the engine control module to the ignition coil and found that there was no power to the ignition coil. I determined that the engine control module had internally shorted and that was causing the misfire. I then recommended a replacement and reprogramming of the engine control module. My boss and my instructor trusted my instincts and ability to problem solve outside the norm.
I always want to be the best at what I do, so I have focused on learning and achievement and will continue to do so going forward. I have received the Excellence in Automotive award at my high school for each of my first three years. I participated in SkillsUSA for the past 3 years and this year placed in the top 10 in the state of Connecticut. I placed top 10 in the state in my ASE entry exam for high schoolers, which afforded me the opportunity to participate in an auto repair competition this May. I was also the captain of my high school soccer team for the last two years, which helped me learn how to lead. Just as important to me is that I have always been a resource to my classmates in all grade levels when we are tackling difficult automotive problems.
I will be attending the high-performance automotive program at the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) in the fall of 2024. UNOH will help me become an auto mechanic in the racing world. I have also volunteered my time at a local racetrack for a couple of years now, helping with car setup and preparation for races, not to mention the occasional pit stop when things go awry, to get my hands and my head in the business.
An adult in my life that knows me well would recommend me to receive this scholarship because I am always trying to learn new things and I persevere through mistakes. I believe that I have been lucky and have had the opportunity to learn from very knowledgeable people in the Automotive industry, including my instructors and boss, and I always try to take in as much as I can and really listen to their advice. And adult would tell you that I am loyal and respectful, and that I will make the family of the namesake of this scholarship, Joe Ford, proud of how I handle myself in my school and profession.
Anthony Bruder Memorial Scholarship
My name is Nolan Blewitt. I am a high school senior at a trade school in an Automotive Technology program. I played varsity soccer during my 4 years of high school, becoming a key piece of the defensive backfield. Being a student athlete has given me the opportunity to meet some amazing people, such as my coaches and teammates. I have learned how to work effectively as a team with peers, sorting out issues in the midst of games and practices as well as compromising when it comes to gameplans and tactics. I have learned how to provide effective solutions for problems, but also have learned when its best to listen to suggestions from your peers. Perhaps most importantly, being a student athlete has helped me become an effective leader. My leadership capabilities were recognized when I became team captain for both my Junior and Senior years of high school.
I have always had a passion for everything automotive, as well as a desire to learn as much as possible about the way cars operate to get a better understanding of them. Furthermore, I am a competitive person that always wants to be the best at what I do, and the automotive industry gives me the perfect opportunity to display my knowledge and hard work. Besides trade school, I also work at an Automotive garage where I can learn about the fast-paced atmosphere of a professional shop. Innovation and being at the cutting edge of technology is an always present theme in the automotive industry, and this means that technicians must face different challenges all the time. I enjoy the challenge of working on all types of models and figuring out the different components and technologies used by manufacturers.
While I am going to school to be an Automotive Technician, my real passion has always been racing, specifically NASCAR. My major interest outside of sports is anything that has to do with racing, and my eventual career goal is to become an integral contributor and leader on a race team. In addition to anything automotive and racing, I like reading about military history, and I play multiple instruments: drums, bass, and guitar. I also golf both on our school team and as a hobby. These activities help me to focus outside of school and sports.
Being a student athlete has not just given me opportunities to work with others, problem solve, and lead, it has also given me the confidence to go after my goals. Before I became co-captain of my soccer team for my final two years, my plan was to get a job in the automotive industry right after high school graduation. Becoming a leader and setting my goals higher in sports, however, pushed me to set my career goals higher as well. I will be attending the University of Northwestern Ohio in the Fall of 2024 as a result, looking to obtain an associate degree in high performance automotive technology. And just as exciting, I will be playing on their Division III soccer reserve squad as a scholarship athlete. My experiences as a student athlete pushed me to make both of these possibilities into realities.

My friends and family have supported my passions, which include automotive, golf, and soccer, and are invested in my success. The activities I love do not define me, however they allow me to express my individuality. I will be on the reserve soccer team at UNOH. This was a success to me as I worked hard at soccer throughout my high school career, earning captain of my team for both my junior and senior years, as well as being recognized as all-conference for both of those years. I hope to have a successful life by putting my full effort into whatever I do, both in and outside of my profession.

This is a mistake I've learned from and won't make again. Today I am better prepared for my future calling because of both my failures and successes along this journey to my chosen degree and career.
