A time I had to rely on faith was when my dad had to go back to Mexico for his appointment in Ciudad Juarez to get his green card. In that time I was out 10 years old and didn’t really know what faith was. He had been going with a judge nonstop for a couple years so she would help him get his green card. My mom is a resident here in the United States and she was going to help him get his green card. He got waivers from family and friends, he took pictures of us and of his family’s house in Mexico where he lived.
Months later we got a notice that we had to go to Ciudad Juarez because his appointment was finally here. We booked our tickets and left, as we left I was thinking how happy we all would be driving around not being scared of the boarder patrol. He was years with his visa around and about with no trouble thank god. We were never stopped by any boarder patrol and I’m thankful for god for that.
As we got to Ciudad Juarez, the next day was the start of many of his appointments. We had appointments for; fingerprints, pictures, questions and the last one was with the judge. We went to all of them back to back. I was tired and annoyed of why we had to do this. But I was small and didn’t understand until the day was here and after all the appointments he went with the judge.
I was nervous but happy since I was sure he was going back home with us. But I was wrong about everything. He came out with a smile like always and told us he hadn’t gotten his green card. I didn’t understand but they were both upset so then I was frustrated making sense in why they were. My dad then told us he needed another waiver apologizing to the government of why he was ever there with no green card or any type of permission to be in the United States. He was not angry or mad or sad, he was calm.
He has always been a calm person but I did not understand how he was so calm knowing he won’t come back home with us. The judge had told him to stay two years in Mexico until he got his waiver and so he did. He followed the rules because he’s never been the type to not and get an even worse Inadmissible.
My mom and I had to go to Tijuana Friday after Friday for snacks she sold since I was still in elementary school and couldn’t be left alone. She worked at home selling food while my dad worked in Mexico. Every time we said goodbye to my dad, I cried my eyes out and so did my mom wishing he would come back with us, but he couldn’t. My mom then talked to me about having faith and how faith was going to help us overcome this obstacle. This obstacle for me was impossible with the feeling of my dad never coming home. I then started to think positive, have faith and prayed that my dad was soon coming home. Days later he got the letter telling him they were ready for a second chance. We were more ready than ever. The day then came and when he walked out with a huge smile of acceptance, I knew FAITH had helped me. Gracias a Dios. We are now together again and happier than ever.
