Sometimes the guests have questions that catch you off guard and you always have to find the best answer as quickly as possible. Growing up in a single-parent household has shaped who I am, instilling resilience, perseverance, and determination. My mami is a force of strength, inspiration, compassion, and love. She has motivated my pursuit of education and my passion for music. From our studio apartment in the Bronx to the halls of LaGuardia High School and now Hofstra University, my journey has been marked by unwavering support from my mom. Whenever I tell someone I want to pursue music they say "That's great". but there's always a look on their face that says "You're never going to make it" or "That's not a stable job". And maybe that's true but my mo. has always pushed me to follow my dreams no matter what and always supported me in whatever I do. Despite financial constraints, she worked tirelessly, from borrowing a car to driving me to school in the winter to defending me against harsh judgments. She has taught me the value of hard work. Music has been my constant companion throughout this journey. From my early days learning violin and cello to my current studies in Music Performance with a minor in Musical Theater, it has been a source of joy, self-expression, and personal growth. Music has taught me to be more confident, to push my boundaries, and to continuously learn and evolve. It has given me a passion that has completely transformed my life and I would not have found it without my mom. From a young age, she put me in music classes and played all different types of music. I owe my life and my passion to her because without music I truly don't know who I would be. My future goals are deeply rooted in my love for music and my desire to create opportunities for others. The first time I ever saw Sabrina Carpenter was on "Girl Meets World". Her character Maya was always so cool to me. She was edgy, stood up for what she believed in, and never backed down. Maya's fierce loyalty to her friends and her resilience in the face of personal struggles made her inspiring and relatable. She was always going through something and yet she still made time for Riley whenever she needed something, always provided a laugh when it got too serious. She was sarcastic, loved fiercely, and was artistic. From then on I've been a fan of Sabrina Carpenter, captivated by her on-screen appearances and her amazing music career. I've followed her throughout her entire career and I am in awe and just so proud of how far she has come. Going from a kids' Disney show to telling powerful stories like "Clouds" and "The Hate You Give". Being in Mean Girls on Broadway (even if it was for a short time) to opening for THE Taylor Swift. Now she's rising to the top of the charts and performing at Madison Square Garden for the first time on her own. As a New Yorker, I know how big of a feat that is, and it's a dream to see her show there. But honestly just seeing her get the recognition she has always deserved is enough. She is one of my favorite artists of all time. She is gorgeous, talented, and goofy. She seems like an awesome person to be friends with and to work with. As a singer/songwriter myself I genuinely aspire to do what she's doing. She has had my dream career - from working with Disney to Broadway to a successful music career. I've always had the same ambitions and seeing her achieve these goals gives me hope and motivation. I dream of the day when I get to be where she is now, maybe even writing and singing alongside her, or opening for her on her next tour. What's truly inspiring about her journey is how she started from the bottom on her own and just kept pushing forward. After elementary and middle school, it was time to graduate and start looking for high schools. For me, my top high school choices were either Talent Unlimited or Laguardia High School. There were so many kids auditioning and only a 10% acceptance rate. But I went for it anyway. Then a few months later, I opened up the portal and it said I had gotten accepted to both Laguardia for vocal and Talent Unlimited for vocal. I was shocked, to say the least, but I immediately put in my decision and went to Laguardia High School. This is where I discovered my love for performing. I was involved in chorus, opera, and musical theater. All the while making my own music to post on YouTube. It was the most amazing experience and now I'm at Hofstra University studying Music Performance with a minor in Musical Theater. I owe my love for music to my mom. She has been there for me through everything and has always supported my decisions. Without her and without music, I don't know who I would be today. Music has taught me how to be more confident in myself. I'm an overthinker and honestly my worst critic. Music and performing have allowed me to express myself and just grow more confident in my abilities. When it comes to music I'm always pushing myself and surprising myself with the things I can do. When I was four years old my mom put me in a charter school in the Bronx. The charter school was bilingual and offered music and dance classes. In this school, I learned my love of music. I learned to play the violin until the age of 8 when I switched to the cello and I was always involved in the schools choir. Even in dance, there were many musical aspects, my favorite being when I performed as Nina in our version of "In the Heights". From that point on it became one of my favorite musicals and someday I hope to be able to work with Lin-Manuel Miranda or be in one of his new musicals. After elementary and middle school, it was time to graduate and start looking for high schools. In New York, there's a system where you have to pick 10 high schools and whichever one chooses you, you get to go to, no matter how low or high it is on the list you have to go to that school. However, there are specialized high schools. Most have to take a test but the one I wanted to go to only needed an audition. For me, my top high school choices were either Talent Unlimited or Laguardia High School. There were so many kids auditioning and only a 10% acceptance rate. But I went for it anyway. I learned that the wood amplifies the vibrations created by bowing or plucking the strings and that the bow's horsehair, when treated with tree sap, grips the strings just right. You learn the anatomy of the instruments and the wonderful science behind their creation that makes it possible for the music to come to life. However, singing in a choir became a profound experience that further illuminated this blend of science and art in a completely different way than my instrumental experience. The concept of blending voices is a perfect example of this. It requires a delicate balance between each voice part, individual expression, and collective harmony. Each singer must maintain the integrity of their unique voice while simultaneously adjusting their tone and volume to create a cohesive sound. A great way to do this is by shaping your vowels and mouth in a particular way. In singing, you learn more about your anatomy. You learn how important posture is, the importance of understanding the physics of sound waves and acoustics, how to take care of your vocal cords, and so much more. Music is a constant cycle of learning new sciences and techniques to improve your singing. But the partnership between music and science extends beyond the technical aspects of performance. It also delves into the realm of psychology, affecting the performers and audience alike. It helps you relieve stress, enhances creativity, connects people across all cultures, and so much more. This emotional response to music has led to the development of music therapy further solidifying the unification of art and science. As a performer, I love music’s ability to transport audiences to another world, away from the struggles of everyday life. As a songwriter, I aspire to spread joy and create music that resonates with and helps others. As a singer, well I just want the opportunity to do what I love. After graduating from Hofstra University, with my music performance degree and minor in musical theater, I hope to be on Broadway to fulfill my performer’s dream. I also hope to release my album and EP to fulfill my songwriter's dream. However, my ambitions extend beyond personal success. I plan to establish my own record label, creating opportunities for artists of color to pursue their dreams. Making a living in the arts is hard enough as it is and I want to give artists a chance to express themselves and be heard by others. When I look to my future, I see myself using my voice, music, and passion to change lives positively. A scholarship would allow me to continue my education to reach my future career goals. It will allow me to hone my musical abilities while continuing my community engagement. Thus far, my community service has instilled in me a deep commitment to helping those in need. As a volunteer with The Bronx Defenders, I assisted in many community events. I helped with the community block party, the celebration of National Reunification Month, and a Thanksgiving day meal. Each of these brought the community together and helped people in need have fun, get a proper meal, and enjoy quality time with their families. During these events, I served food to the community, assisted with setup and cleaning, engaged with parents and kids, and helped organize the games. I got to see firsthand how inspiring it is to be a part of an organization that uplifts and empowers people who are struggling every day. Additionally, my work with the Bronx Zoo showed me how art can be transformed into interactive experiences that guests can engage with throughout the park. Seeing guests light up as they explored the conservation efforts of the Bronx Zoo through games that I and other volunteers had created was incredibly fulfilling. It showed me art can connect people to important causes. With your support, I could continue studying music theory, music history, songwriting, and performance at a higher level, which will ultimately help me attain my goal. My vision is to create music and musicals to uplift others, resonate emotionally, and provide solace to those who are struggling with hardships. However, my aspirations extend beyond personal artistic expression alone. I dream of establishing my own recording studio, not just to produce my own music, but to offer a platform for other aspiring artists. Underrepresented artists who want to share their message of love, community, and healing. As a woman of color, it is incredibly difficult to get into the entertainment industry or even get a chance to be heard and recognized for your talent. My studio would provide a space for these creators to amplify their talents and stories on their own terms. My volunteering experience taught me the importance of advocating for community enrichment and joy. It taught me that change doesn't just come from good intentions but a commitment to make that change happen. Receiving this scholarship will help me turn my artistic passion into a sustainable and impactful career, centered on music as a catalyst for positive change, support, and upliftment.

In a subplot, Grunkle Stan and Perry the Platypus, join forces to help them in their quest, Perry is convinced the effects on the town are due to Dr. Doofenshmirtz and his crazy inventions. So, he and Grunkle Stan find his secret lair and defeat him by putting on the self-destruct button of his Black Hole Ray. With the ray destroyed, the team must figure out a way to counteract the effects of the black hole on the town, using one of Phineas and Ferb's inventions. In the end, the two groups of friends solve the mystery and part ways, with promises to keep in touch and perhaps even meet up again in the future. The episode concludes with a heartwarming moment as Phineas, Ferb, Dipper, and Mabel reflect on their adventure and the friendships they've formed along the way.

A House on the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune - is heartwarming and whimsical and has principles of inclusivity and diversity. Has a captivating message of acceptance, love, and staying true to who you are despite the powers at be. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides - is a gripping psychological thriller with an amazing plot twist for an ending. Will always have you on the edge of your seat. You Will Be Mine by Natasha Preston - one of my favorite authors of both thriller and romance. A thriller with a suspenseful plot and horrifying imagery. Some other great horrors by her are Awake, The Lake, The Fear, The Cellar, and The Island. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - is a timeless classic about society and romance. Verity by Colleen Hoover - is another gripping thriller with shocking revelations The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley - one of the best books I've read in a while. A mystery with compelling characters. The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton - is a mind-bending mystery that has a unique narrative structure It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover - is a powerful and emotional story with poignant themes. The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston - is a dark romance with a beautiful ending Lotus by Jennifer Hartmann - is a beautiful romance of love, redemption, and finding a way back to a new normal after a traumatic experience. Today Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon - a charming and heartfelt romance with witty banter and relatable characters. My ideal bookshelf has my favorite genres of romance and horror/thriller. Of course, there are a bunch of other books that I would love to put on here but I think these books perfectly encapsulate my favorite books. My ideal bookshelf has books with a touch of suspense, romance, and a great ending. Truthfully, the only ones I've found on #BookTok have been Verity, The Paris Apartment, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, It Ends With Us, and The Silent Patient. Each of these books has had its moment to shine on #BookTok. These titles have generated massive buzz in the #BookTok, sparking discussions with readers in the community. They resonate with readers through intricate plots and memorable characters, making them must-haves on not only my ideal bookshelf but any bookshelf inspired by #BookTok recommendations.

"Never Have I Ever" is one of the best Netflix shows. The show follows a first-generation Indian-American teenager who wants to be popular at school but faces challenges with friends, love, family, and grief. She ends up losing herself and struggles to find her way back. When "Never Have I Ever" began I was halfway through my freshman year of high school. While Devi was starting her senior year and by the time the show ended I was graduating with her. I went through all my high school years watching Devi grow and face struggles throughout her high school career just like I did. The show gives a fresh and authentic portrayal of the teenage experience and struggles that every teenager faces in different ways. With trying to fit in, make the right friends, find yourself, and struggle to find the balance between making everyone else happy and also yourself. At the beginning of the series, Devi struggles with the loss of her father, popularity, generational differences with her mom, and the possibility of loving two people. The other characters grapple with their identity and their sexuality. It's true that the show is meant for high schoolers and is incredibly relatable to them. However, it's a great show for anyone as it goes through topics that everyone has been through or is currently going through. Although the show depicts many struggles and incredibly serious moments, it is also hilarious. The writing is sharp and witty, keeping the audience engaged in the series. The acting itself is also amazing each of the actors does a great job portraying the characters. Particularly, Maitreyi who plays the main character, Devi. Devi can often be annoying and chaotic but Maitreyi makes her lovable and gives her so much depth that allows for so much character development throughout the series. The cast itself is also very diverse and inclusive. The show includes people of color and people a part of the LGBTQ+ community, making way for more representation on TV. The show is witty, heartfelt, honest, and relatable. The show never shies away from discussing the hard topics but gives you the relief that you need in life through comedy and the fact that someone sees you, you can see a bit of yourself in every character and in every struggle the characters go through. It has everything that you would look for in a great show.

It's a relaxing Monday night. My mom, my boyfriend, and I have just finished our dinner and dessert. This only being the second time that we've all dined together. He wants to play a Nintendo game on my switch. So the three of us decide to play Mario Kart. The only other infamous game that ruins relationships like Uno and Monopoly. I set up my switch on my bed so it's stable. It's calm as we pick our racers and cars. I go with Rosalina, the best out of all characters. My mom picks, Yoshi and he picks Luigi. We move on and I end up picking the Lightning Cup to race because Rainbow Road is one of my favorite tracks in my Mario Kart. The race begins 3...2...1... Chaos ensues. My mom can't see which box she's supposed to be playing for. My boyfriend and I are racing each other. Throwing bombs, bananas, shells. Anything we can to get to the number 1 spot. There's yelling and questions like "who did that" and me snickering in the corner. Accusing of cheating, which for some reason is always directed at me. It was definitely one of the best games I've ever played. It was a great way for us all to bond. In the end I ended up tying with my boyfriend as we'd both won two races and collected the same amount of coins. Mario Kart turned our quiet Monday night into a tornado of fun and chaos. It really is an amazing Nintendo game.

Zendaya has been in the limelight ever since I was young. Going from shake it up to dancing with the stars to euphoria. I've watched her grow as I've grown. Zendaya is someone that absolutely amazes me. She is so much more than a triple threat and at this point can really do anything. It's hard to pick just one aspect of her career that I admire most. Her singing career although short is still "replaying" in everyone's lives. Her acting career spans so many different genres and shows her incredible talent and versatility. But her fashion is what sticks out to me the most. On every red carpet she goes out and absolutely takes the stage. She's never afraid to sport her natural curly hair. And I absolutely love how she incorporates elements from her movies into every outfit she wears. She is a fashion icon and I love that she doesn't sit back and let other people pick her clothes for her. Her stylist Law Roach and her have a very close relationship and they are incredibly collaborative when it comes to red carpet outfits. However, just the fact that she is a black woman that is making waves in all different industries is amazing. She's setting a path and making way for more women of color to be able to follow their dreams. She is an advocate for diversity and inclusivity and shows that in each aspect of her career. Zendaya is an absolute powerhouse.

Andrew Garfield is not only my favorite spiderman but one of my favorite actors of all time. It's true that he is incredibly handsome and that is a big plus however, most do not realize how talented he really is. From a serious role like the Social Network to Spiderman to Jonathan Larson in tik tik boom, he proves his talent and versatility. In Spiderman he is quick witted, smart, and really funny. But he also shows his loving and caring side for Gwen. As a Spiderman, Andrew Garfield perfectly encapsulates everything Spiderman is supposed to be. A cute and nerdy teenage boy who gets to be a superhero who's sarcastic and witty. Andrew Garfield has a great way of bridging the two sides of the character with Peter Parker being smart and characterized as a bit of a loner and a misfit whereas Spiderman is brave and determined to always do what's right. Andrew portrays the awkwardness and vulnerability of Peter and the humor of Spiderman perfectly. He brings a depth to the character and makes him incredibly relatable to the audience. He shows that deep down Spiderman is just a troubled teenage boy trying to get through life just like the rest of us at that time. His chemistry as Peter with Gwen is also remarkable even in the first movie before they started dating. Their relationship feels genuine and authentic. You see them going through all these struggles together fighting to make their relationship work. They show love, loss, and sacrifice and how to deal with it in a relationship, adding to the emotional depth and development of the characters. His portrayal of Spiderman is timeless and even though the movies had me crying my eyes out when Gwen died, they will always have a special place in my heart.

I loved music so much that I went to LaGuardia High School as a vocal major. At LaGuardia, I rediscovered my love for dance and for art. Even though a career as an artist is relatively hard to achieve, I couldn't imagine myself doing anything else, so I enrolled at Hofstra University as a Music Performance major. All I've ever wanted to do is perform and share music with the world. I think art in general is such a powerful thing, and most people don't realize it when they're sitting back and enjoying it. Still, it's magical being on that stage sharing stories and songs and inviting people along for a musical journey. Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It's my passion and the thing that I love the most. Music has helped me get through my roughest days and my best days when I just blast music and dance around like a maniac. If I never had music I don't know who I would be right now. I'm a musician, a singer, a songwriter and being in the music industry is all I've ever dreamed of. Unlike me, she’s never really gotten the opportunity to do so herself. However, she always gave me the encouragement and space to do what I dream of. Music is something I can’t live without and have always been passionate about which is why I’m choosing to further my music education and pursue my musical career. However, as a woman of color it’s very hard to even make a dent in the music industry. Growing up with my mom allowed me to see how she always fought for what she deserved, fighting for both of us to live comfortable and happy lives. I always saw her running around trying to do the best for us and make the most out of our situation. Never once did she complain or frown. Having said that, she found a little apartment in the Bronx for us to live in and although it's not the best, it's still a home. So let me tell you how my future dreams are going to play out: As of right now, I am pursuing my career mainly by furthering my musical education at Hofstra University, taking voice lessons, and gaining as much knowledge as I possibly can. However, I'm also writing my songs. I have a YouTube channel where I post my music and more recently I invested in putting my music on more platforms for people to hear. It's the best feeling when you meet someone and connect over shared tastes in music or songs. When you get to hop in a car with your friends and just sing at the top of your lungs to your favorite songs. I want to be able to create that special connection for people through my music. Whilst writing my songs and self-publishing them, I want to pursue my performance goals by getting a role on Broadway. I've been looking into auditions trying to find any way to get me to my dreams. One day I'll get a lead role on Broadway. I'll learn the dances, read over lines with the cast, learn all the songs try to get every note down, and practice with my family members going through the entire show to get feedback on how to improve my performance skills. I'll bond with my castmates over the crazy life experience we're having and after every show, I'll go out the back and sign Playbills like every Broadway actress before me. One day after one of my performances I'll meet Lin-Manuel Miranda and we'll talk about Broadway and how I've always dreamed of working with him. I'll tell him how I want to write musicals like him and make stories come to life while sticking to my Puerto Rican heritage like he does. After this, we'll exchange numbers, and one day he'll contact me telling me how he has a new musical he wants me to star in and of course, I'll say yes. I will even produce the musical and help write the songs, combining my love for writing and performing music. He will be a mentor to me and teach me everything I need to know about storytelling and musicals. Soon after this musical finishes, he will get a call from Disney asking for his help to write their new musical movie. He will enlist me and we will co-write the movie score with Alan Menken. He even convinces Disney to cast me as the lead role in the movie. Afterward, I will begin writing musicals on my own. I will write two successful musicals and begin a new journey in which I will create my own company. This company will have two sub-branches. One is a movie production company and the other is a studio where I will recruit new artists that were once like me, trying to get their voice heard and make a change in the world through their music. My future is me pursuing my dreams and my passions. Me making waves in the music industry.

When I experience an intense emotion or simply cherish a moment spent with my mom and sister, creativity flows through me. With 24 more hours, I would wake up and listen to the music nature provides, relishing in the sunshine and hoping to radiate as brightly as it does in those 24 hours. Although I’ve lived in New York all my life, I’ve never just explored this wonderful city. I would go out, take the subway, listen to the break dancers on the train or the people singing on the subway platform, walk around, and enjoy my city. I would go to a Broadway show and feel their performance bringing me joy and inspiring me to perform like that - one that can change a person's life in an instant. I would take the train back home and write a song about the love I have for New York City and how there is no other place like it. Once home, I would spend time making memories with my loved ones, baking cookies with my mom, coloring with my sister in her coloring book, laughing, and loving every moment spent with them.

Not only because it is incredibly hard to get discovered, or because I'm Hispanic and African American, but because between paying for college and also trying to maintain financial stability I don't have enough financial space to get the resources I need to achieve my dreams. Who is Noelani Whittington? She's a freshman at Hofstra University studying music performance. She's lived in the Bronx, New York all her life. She loves music, Disney, Legos, reading, and JustDance. She hasn't been on this earth for too long but she's so proud of what she's accomplished in her life thus far. She's goofy, weird, loyal, and creative. Noelani is me. I've always struggled with knowing what I want to do with my life in terms of my career. There are just so many options out there. When I was four, I wanted to be a veterinarian. At 6, I wanted to be a teacher, later I would say a music or English teacher. Now, my career path is a little fuzzy. All I know for sure is that I want to do something that has to do with music. It's been a part of my life since the womb, literally, as my mom would play classical music often. Over the years I've grown my passion, knowledge, and appreciation for it. Now I know a lot of people are probably going to say a career more impacting than that, like a doctor, engineer, or entrepreneur. But before you move on to the next candidate, let me tell you why music is just as impactful, dare I say more impactful than that. There are so many reasons why I love music. From the beginning of time, music has been a part of humans' lives and it's been so beneficial and influential. Music is one of the few constants in our lives, it's a universal language that we all indulge in and understand. Maybe we don't all understand it on a technical level like some but we understand it in its purest form. Emotionally. Music connects us all as it is intricately interwoven into every culture and every society. No matter our differences in beliefs or opinions, people can always come back to music and bond over something that seems so trivial but has impacted us silently lurking in the shadows for centuries. My name is Noelani Whittington and I am a musician, singer, and songwriter. In the future, I hope my career involves each of these things. As a singer, maybe I'll be on Broadway, bringing joy to people across the world and reshaping them by helping them escape into a magical, fictional world, even if it's just for two hours. As a songwriter, I hope to create music that people can connect over, and connect to. I hope to make music that helps people feel better when they're sad or helps them through a traumatic experience. As a musician, I hope to be like the greats before me, paving the way for more artists like me who just want to share their passion with the world and make it better, one song at a time.

From before day 1, my mom has been by my side. She found us a little apartment in the Bronx to live in and although it's not the best it's home. She worked long hours, working her way up to become Director of Operations just so she could provide for me. She borrowed a friend's car in the winter so she could drive me to school and keep me warm. She fought for me when a friend's mom told us "That's why her dad left you" in the middle of an argument. For 17 years it's just been my mom and I. By each other's side, she's my ride or die. We've had our ups and downs but she's my best friend. She influences me every day of my life and every day, every moment I grow prouder and prouder of her. My mom is independent, supportive, and weird, and has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams. Because of her, I know what it's like to struggle but keep pushing forward to make things better for yourself and your loved ones. These characteristics represent who I am: Weird - My mom's motto is "Stay weird". When I was younger she would prepare me for the world by joking around with me. She would say that kids might tell me I'm weird or ugly or too skinny. And that the way to reply would be to a) walk away or b) simply say being weird is a good thing. As I grew older I realized she was right. Everyone is weird in their way and everyone is a nerd in a certain skill or aspect of their life. And that's okay. You're meant to embrace your quirks not be shamed into hiding them. Kind - This leads me to kindness. Of course, the golden rule is to treat people the way you want to be treated and if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it. I believe kindness is the type of skill that is a lifelong goal. Always be kind. Creative - From a young age my mom got me into singing, acting, dancing, and everything that has to do with the performing arts which is ironic considering her talents lie more in the arts and crafts. department. We love building Legos together and doing little projects. She encouraged me to follow my dreams and go after my music career. Supportive - No matter how scary life got. No matter what we went through. My mom was always by my side and I strive to be that way now and in the future. Even if she was scared for me she never faltered and always showered me with encouraging words to make me feel more confident in myself. Last but not least is happy. There are a ton of other characteristics I could rattle off. But being happy is the most important to my mom and I. Every memory of my childhood is filled with joy and nostalgia and in every one, there is my mom. Always by my side with a smile on her face. Always working hard to make me happy. In the future, I strive to be like my mom. Yeah, we both have made mistakes but if we learn from them and have each other it's all worth it. I'm so proud of my mom and I hope she's proud of the person I am today.

Music is a universal language. It is one of the few things that can connect all humans no matter their background, culture, or personal opinions. Because of my mom I've not only been able to learn about music but I've had the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful world of music. My mom is someone who is independent, outgoing, supportive, and unfortunately never went after her dreams. I think that is part of the reason why she pushes me to follow mine. From a young age she could tell that I really loved music and that may be because she played classical music while I was in the womb. She told me a story of how she used to put headphones over her belly so I could listen to the music. And it definitely paid off because a few years later I would only watch shows with music. Shows like “The Backyardigans”, “Team Umizoomi”, and most importantly “The Little Einsteins”. These shows enhanced my love for music so much that my mom enrolled me in a bilingual school that offered classes in dance and violin. From there I learned to play the cello and I even got a scholarship to Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts. Although my mom still had to pay a good amount of money, she did it in a heartbeat because it was something I really wanted to do. Later, it was time to choose my high school. I wanted to audition for performing arts high schools but I was so nervous. I hadn't really ever auditioned for anything like that and I didn’t know if I was good enough to really make it to prestigious schools. When I had shown my high school list to my guidance counselor, she kind of shot me down and told me I had too many reach schools that I probably wouldn’t get into. Despite that my mom was by my side every step of the way and she told me not to listen to my guidance counselor anyways. My mom helped me pick my pieces, helped me practice them, and drove me to my auditions. I knew she was secretly as scared as I was because I was auditioning against hundreds of kids in New York City but she never faltered, and continued giving me the support I needed to feel confident in my auditions. When the time came to open my decision she was right beside me and I had ended up getting accepted to my top 2 choices. Ultimately, I accepted Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School. From there I became a vocal major where I continued to learn and grow my passion for music with my mom by my side. Coming to all my shows no matter what, no matter the time, she would call off work and come see me perform. Because of her I found my passion, something that I plan to pursue in my college years. It's been my mom and I for 17 years and I couldn’t ask for a better support system.

Since I was four years old, I have defined myself as a musician. My mom put me in an all-girls school in the Bronx that prided itself on educating its students in bilingual classes (Spanish and English), dance, and, of course, music. I went to this school for about nine years, where I dove deeper into the power of music and developed my passion for it. Starting in music, I was a violinist, then a cellist, and now a vocalist who dabbles in a few different instruments. Over the past 4 years, this love for music has only grown as I was a vocal major at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, where I got to hone in on my passion for vocal music. There are so many “whys” as to what motivates me and why I’m passionate about music. However, these are my top 2 reasons: 1) Music is a universal language that connects us all. 2) And the feeling of making and performing that music is otherworldly. Music connects everyone in the world, and it is one of the few things that can. Despite all of our differences in opinions and culture, music can singlehandedly connect us all and give us a single commonality in this world of discrepancy. Music connects us emotionally and culturally. You could have two people who have different personalities and come from different backgrounds but connect over one song, one note, one harmony, and one melody. Even if people don’t understand the depth of the song, like the chord names, we can all understand the music. Because it makes us feel whatever that emotion is, one song can change your emotion in a split second. Music is so powerful. It can heal people, transform them, and connect everyone on an emotional level. That is something so unique and so compelling. No matter what you know you can always count on music. Although listening to music is a powerful way to connect people, being able to make it and perform it is even better. At LaGuardia, I met someone who helped me learn how to write music of my own. I had always written silly songs about shoes or fashion and wanted to write seriously but never thought I could until I met this person. He helped me create my YouTube channel and make progress in writing lyrics for my songs. Because of him, I learned how awesome it is to collaborate with other people on music. When two people come together and have the same passions, it is amazing what they can create. I love writing and collaborating on music because of the process. Being able to bounce off ideas and just write for the sake of writing. It’s special when you dedicate a few hours to music, putting in hard work and expression, and then hear the end product, watching it get sent off so others can hear what you made and you can be a part of the universal language that is music. Being able to perform music is just as special. In my junior year of high school, I performed in the opera “The Pirates of Penzance”. It was my first full-scale production and my first major show since returning from the pandemic. We worked from September to April, learning the music, the choreography, and how to be fully immersed in a new world, bringing the audience along with you for the story of a lifetime. In “Pirates”, I played a ward who got thrown over someone’s shoulders and loved playing kid's games like “Duck, Duck, Goose” and Badminton with her fellow wards. As we waited backstage for our cue, we heard the cheers and laughs of the audience. You could feel us holding our breaths, the collective nervousness, and yet being excited to run on stage. Once I did, all of the fear swept away, and I assumed the role of a ward. It was the best experience, and it was over as quickly as it started. At the moment, the late-night rehearsals were stressful, and I was so ready to just get to tech week. But when it was over, I missed the laughs and the extravagant costumes. I realized how special the whole experience was, and I’m grateful for it. I realized how beautiful it is to invest months of preparation into something and watch it come to life. After each performance, my friends stood beside me as we took our bows, embracing the thunderous applause and taking in the happiness and overwhelming sense of accomplishment. It was amazing, and that indescribable feeling was what made me want to pursue music in college, where I will be attending Hofstra University as a music performance major. It’s the same feeling I get when releasing and making a song. At Hofstra, I'm going to further my education in music, performance, and the music industry in the hopes that it will help me with my music career in the future. With the rise of technology, I will continue writing my music and hope to get discovered one day, reaching more people with it. Since performance is my first love, I hope to end up on Broadway and involve myself with Disney either on Broadway or in a musical movie. I plan to continue to be a part of the universal language and use my passion for music to connect with others.

New York City is a place of wonder. It is one of the biggest and best cities in America and the world. It is the place so many artists go to fulfill their dreams. I've lived in New York my entire life, and the city holds a special place in my heart. However, it was not always easy. I live in the Bronx, one of the five New York boroughs. Compared to Manhattan, the Bronx is always seen as the worst of the boroughs due to violence and poor social standing. I went to elementary and middle school in the Bronx. All Hispanic and African American women in one school. However, I went to high school in Manhattan, and the difference between the two schools was so drastic. I was always so afraid of icebreakers because the first question people would ask was, "Where are you from?". I would reply from the Bronx with a smile, and everyone would have a face of disgust and shock all at once and just say, "Oh." It was hard at first going to a new school where most people were richer than you and barely anyone was a person of color, especially coming from a place like the Bronx. I grew tired of feeling bad for where I came from. I tried to tell people that the Bronx is not a bad place. The Bronx is a place filled with so many different walks of life. Sure, it's not perfect, but it's home. It's been home for 17 years. Home of my studio apartment that I've lived in with my mom since I was born. At a certain point, I stopped trying to convince people that the Bronx was a bad place. Instead, I began to embrace it, and no matter what looks I get, I keep that glowing smile on my face when speaking of my home. Coming from a place like the Bronx can be tough, not only because of the looks you might get but also because of the constant struggle of wanting to do great things but never knowing how to get them done. I come from a struggling borough in a giant city filled with millions of people. I'm one spec in this massive universe, and I want to be able to give back to my community and fulfill my dreams of becoming a singer. I want to be able to use my music to help others, heal others, and better communities. I want the ability to further my education without having to worry about my mom having to pay for it all, without having to worry about student debt and becoming a statistic, and without having to worry about getting a job I hate just to make money and pay off bills. I want to be able to walk into Hofstra University feeling proud of myself and feeling free to explore all of the opportunities ahead of me without the weight of finances on my shoulders. I want to study abroad, travel the world, get out of the inner city, and explore and learn about cultures different from mine. I hope to be able to do all of this with your help. People come to New York to get their time to shine, to achieve their goals, and with your help, I will be able to do the same.

Leaves soared through the air, the faint sound of rushing waterfalls coming from the Bronx River, and squirrels roaming the park. People pass on golf carts waving hello, without knowing who you are. Inching closer to your destination, you hear the sea lions calling to one another. As you look to your right, you see the front of the Education Building that opened with the Bronx Zoo in 1899. It was in the fall of 2021 right when we were coming back from the pandemic that I started my first internship and job as a Discovery Guide Leader, at the Bronx Zoo. I belonged to a community of educators who went out into the Bronx Zoo to welcome guests, help them navigate through the park, provide information regarding events like Boo at the Zoo, and interact with them through live-interpretation activities that we create and facilitate. Educators who participated in nature play, a type of interpretative play that uses nature as a playground, like making magical wands using sticks and pinecones. Educators who collaborated to provide the best guest experience and teach them about wildlife. Being a Discovery Guide Leader allowed me to obtain a newfound appreciation for not only the Wildlife Conservation Society, but for the people who are doing everything in their power to protect our planet, and those behind the scenes educating guests. Through this experience, I gained more confidence in myself regarding customer service and public speaking. I learned how to educate others effectively and how to be enthusiastic while teaching. From this experience, I learned more about myself. I learned that I loved teaching guests and community service but also customer service and helping people. From a young age, I had known that I loved helping people always trying to get the teacher to pick me to hand out papers. However, my suspicions were not confirmed until being involved in the Discovery Guide Leader program. Due to this experience, I learned that my goal of becoming a music educator was something I could love and go after. With the help of this scholarship, I can successfully achieve my career goal of becoming a music educator. In the fall of 2023, I will be attending Hofstra University for music. Through this, I hope to master my craft and continue to gain more knowledge of my passion. I hope to turn my passion and teach others about the beauty of music. This scholarship will help me not only get the education I need to achieve my goals but will help me share my passion for music with others.

Music has been an important part of my life since I was four years old. I was enrolled in an elementary and middle school in the Bronx that provided violin classes. Naturally, I started my musical journey in instrumental music. I learned to play the violin and then the cello when I was in the 3rd grade. I got a full-ride scholarship to the Turtle Bay Music School in Manhattan where I continued to master my musical training in cello. In 7th grade, I got to perform "The National Anthem" with my middle school string orchestra at Yankee Stadium. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I got to perform with all of my friends and performed in one of the biggest stadiums in the world. I transitioned into mastering vocal music in high school as I entered LaGuardia High School. For four years I have been mastering my craft and continuing to expand on my passion for music. When I arrived, I was an advanced beginner in vocal music, as I had done chorus in elementary and middle school. However, those choruses were nothing compared to the professional choruses at LaGuardia. Over these four years, I’ve performed with the LaGuardia Show Choir at Lincoln Center and Bryant Park, the LaGuardia Operetta Workshop at Town Hall and two full-scale school productions of “The Pirates of Penzance” and “The Merry Widow”, and the LaGuardia Senior Chorus at Carnegie Hall, twice. However, our production of "The Pirates of Penzance" was the one that made me want to pursue music in the future. We worked from September to April, learning the music, the choreography, and how to be fully immersed in a new world, bringing the audience along with you for the story of a lifetime. It was amazing, and that indescribable feeling was what made me want to do opera again in my Senior Year and pursue music after high school. In college, I plan to major in music, joining choruses and Acapella groups along the way, and bonding with others who love music as much as I do. I aspire to be in a Disney musical film, work with my musical inspirations, Joshua Bassett, Alan Menken, Ryan Tedder, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, and continue expanding my musical abilities. Music connects everyone in the world. It connects us emotionally, culturally, and physically. You could have two people who are completely different in personality but connect over one song, note, harmony, or melody. I hope to continue to connect with others through music and share my passions with the rest of the world.

"Encanto" is the story of a Colombian family with magical powers and the struggles they go through to make their family and community proud. "Encanto" is one of my favorite Disney movies for many reasons. Starting with the fact that "Encanto" is one of my favorite movies because of the glorious arraignment of music and lyrics created by the amazing Lin-Manuel Miranda. Lin-Manuel is a Puerto Rican like me so he knows the struggles of being a part of a Hispanic family and how they interact with one another and their communities. He brilliantly captures each aspect of the Hispanic culture and family life, transforming it into beautiful songs and instrumentals as no one else could. In the future, I hope to work with him whether that be in a Disney film or a Broadway musical he creates. Secondly, "Encanto" is one of the few Disney movies containing all Hispanic characters. As a Puerto Rican myself, it was nice to see a similar culture finally showcased on the big screen. Mirabel's curly hair is almost identical to mine and each struggle that the characters go through is something I can relate to. Similar to a lot of characters in "Encanto", I am a perfectionist, always trying to make my family proud. My mom is a single mother who went through a lot in her life and still found her way to be a great independent woman who raised me well. I'm always trying to push myself and dream big to make her proud. Not only that but to prove to myself that I can do amazing things and achieve everything I want in life. I could relate so much to the pressures of always trying to prove yourself and be perfect. Even though when "Encanto" came out I had already become less of a perfectionist I could still relate greatly as that is how I had felt prior. It's hard living up to the expectations of other people and the characters throughout the movie and as I'm continuing to grow are learning to live up to the expectations of myself. Just doing what makes you happy and trying your best will make your family proud. It also taught me that communicating with my mom is always the right way to go. Keeping things bottled up never works as proven in "Encanto" where the house literally crumbled and fell apart as their family foundation broke apart. "Encanto" further taught me that being imperfect is okay. It's okay to be flawed and make mistakes because there will always be people who will love and support you and be proud of you no matter what.
