Growing up, I rarely saw Black women leading major fashion houses or serving as the creative visionaries behind the brands I admired. While fashion celebrated diversity on the runway, the people making the decisions behind the scenes often looked very different from me. Rather than making me question whether I belonged, it gave me purpose. I want to become part of a new generation of designers who not only earn a seat at the table but make room for others to join them. My education is preparing me to become a fashion designer, but more importantly, it is giving me the tools to create opportunities for communities that have historically been overlooked. As a Black woman entering an industry where leadership has long been dominated by white men, I know representation matters. When young Black girls see someone who shares their background designing collections, leading creative teams, or building successful brands, they begin to believe those dreams belong to them too. I want to help redefine what leadership in fashion looks like by proving that talent and creativity exist in every community when people are given the opportunity to succeed. One of the people who has shaped my vision is Namasha, founder of Creatives Want Change. Receiving a scholarship from her organization showed me the impact one person can have by intentionally investing in young creatives. Through scholarships, internships, college preparation, and mentorship, she is helping students from underrepresented backgrounds enter an industry that can often feel out of reach. Because organizations like Creatives Want Change believed in me, I have been able to pursue opportunities that once felt impossible, including studying fashion design at SCAD and earning national recognition for my work. Their investment inspires me to become that same source of encouragement for someone else. My goal is to build a career where my success creates opportunities for others. I hope to establish scholarships for aspiring Black designers, partner with brands to create paid internships, and mentor high school students who dream of entering fashion but lack the resources or professional connections to get started. I want to become the person I once needed by helping young creatives believe they belong in this industry. My commitment to giving back was strengthened even more this summer when I took a pattern drafting course at Lafrance Studios. Learning from someone who generously shared their knowledge reminded me that education becomes even more valuable when it is passed on. One day, I hope to offer affordable workshops in my community that teach sewing, pattern drafting, garment construction, and creative entrepreneurship so aspiring designers can develop their talents regardless of their financial circumstances. Giving back also means protecting the future of our planet. For more than five years, I have operated a secondhand Depop boutique that promotes sustainable shopping by giving clothing a second life. I have embraced those same values in my own wardrobe by sourcing secondhand garments, deconstructing them, and transforming them into original pieces. This experience has taught me that creativity and sustainability can work hand in hand. As a designer, I hope to continue promoting circular fashion while encouraging consumers to rethink how they buy, wear, and value clothing. My vision extends far beyond designing beautiful garments. I want to help build a fashion industry that is more inclusive, sustainable, and accessible than the one I entered. I want young Black girls to see themselves reflected not only on the runway but also in the studios, boardrooms, and leadership positions where creative decisions are made.

The first garment I designed at the Savannah College of Art and Design almost did not happen. I remember standing in a fabric store with my calculator open, adding and deleting materials because I simply could not afford everything on my list. Every decision felt like a compromise. Should I buy the fabric my design deserved, or choose a less expensive option so I could afford thread, interfacing, and zippers? I left with fewer materials than I needed and spent that evening in the studio taking apart an old muslin prototype so I could reuse pieces instead of buying more fabric. No one looking at the finished garment would have known the difference, but I did. That project taught me one of the most important lessons of my life. Creativity is not born from having unlimited resources. It is born from refusing to let limitations define what is possible. Financial uncertainty has been the greatest challenge throughout my college journey. Every quarter brings difficult decisions about tuition, housing, textbooks, and the expensive supplies required for fashion design courses. While many students worry only about meeting deadlines, I often worry about how I will pay for the materials needed to bring my ideas to life. Those moments have been stressful, but they have never made me question whether I belong in this field. Instead, they have strengthened my determination to succeed. Long before sustainability became a popular conversation in fashion, I was practicing it out of necessity. Five years ago, I started a secondhand Depop boutique where I source and resell pre-loved clothing, encouraging others to embrace more sustainable shopping habits. What began as a way to earn extra income quickly became something much more meaningful. I started studying how garments were constructed, paying attention to fabric quality, silhouettes, and craftsmanship. For my own wardrobe, I began purchasing secondhand clothing, carefully taking garments apart, altering patterns, and reconstructing them into pieces that reflected my own vision. Without realizing it, I was teaching myself skills that would later become invaluable in fashion school. Running my boutique changed the way I think about design. Instead of asking, “What can I buy?” I began asking, “What can this become?” That mindset has shaped my creative process ever since. I believe the future of fashion depends on designers who are willing to rethink waste, value craftsmanship, and create with intention. My financial circumstances introduced me to sustainable fashion, but my passion for design transformed it into my purpose. These experiences have prepared me for success in college and beyond in ways I never expected. They have taught me discipline, resilience, adaptability, and resourcefulness. They have also taught me that some of the best ideas emerge from limitations. Fashion is an industry that demands innovation, and I have learned to see obstacles as opportunities to create something even better. My motivation to pursue higher education extends far beyond earning a degree. Fashion has the power to tell stories without words. The right garment can help someone feel confident, express their identity, and feel seen. I want my work to give people that feeling while proving that sustainability and beautiful design can exist together. Through my education at SCAD, I am developing the technical skills and creative confidence needed to make that vision a reality. Although financial obstacles have been a constant part of my journey, they have never prevented me from striving for excellence. Becoming a YoungArts Winner with Distinction, receiving national art awards, making the Dean’s List, and participating in prestigious design mentorships have affirmed that I belong in this industry. Behind every accomplishment are countless late nights in the studio, difficult financial decisions, and an unwavering belief that my circumstances would never determine my future. Every recognition reminds me that perseverance has carried me farther than my circumstances ever suggested was possible. Receiving this scholarship would ease a financial burden that too often competes with my education. More importantly, it would allow me to devote even more time to refining my craft, expanding my portfolio, and preparing for a career where I can make a meaningful impact through design. It would be an investment in someone who has already demonstrated that she will make every opportunity count. I still carry a calculator when I shop for fabric. Today, it reminds me less of what I cannot afford and more of how far determination has brought me. Those conversations allow me to normalize secondhand shopping and encourage thousands of viewers to think differently about fashion. Every outfit is an opportunity to show that personal style does not have to come at the expense of the environment. One of my proudest moments came during my first fashion show. Rather than purchasing new fabric, I sourced oversized men’s button-down shirts from a thrift store, spending less than ten dollars in total. I deconstructed each shirt and transformed them into an entirely new garment that challenged expectations of what a basic button-up could become. Watching that design walk down the runway reminded me that innovation is not defined by expensive materials but by imagination and resourcefulness. As I continue my education, sustainability will remain at the center of everything I create. Whether I am designing collections, building a brand, or inspiring consumers through digital platforms, I want to make circular fashion feel aspirational rather than limiting. It was a dreary Christmas morning in 2008. I can distinctly remember a gift I received from my nana the night before sitting out in front of the Christmas tree. It was a big one, wrapped in the most beautiful wrapping I had ever seen. I could not wait to open it and see what was inside. I began tugging at the paper until it finally gave way to a treasure. Behold, a Disney princess motif trunk. It was full of beautiful chiffon gowns, satin elbow length gloves, rhinestone studded slip-on heels and all the tiaras, earrings, necklaces, and bangles a girl could ever ask for. A child transported into an enchanted world of dress-up, twirling in her exquisite gowns armed with a degree in fashion design can help transform my childhood fantasies into a dazzling reality. One in which I could become a sort of Fantasy Couturier by crafting garments that transport wearers to other worldly realms. Or a Cultural Chameleon, where I could interweave the rich tapestry of my African American background and pay homage to my African roots by infusing them with a contemporary twist. I could design red carpet worthy gowns for celebrities, as a Celebrity Couture Conjurer. I could be Next in Fashion or even a Pattern Picasso transforming ordinary threads into wearable art. I imagine my creations turning heads as they sashay down the runways around the world. My creations would push the boundaries of what fashion can be, creating garments that can shape the course of our future. With this degree, the possibilities are endless. At the end of a four-year journey, I intend to hold a degree in fashion design, marketing and management from Savannah College of Arts and Design. The Khalil Mack 52 Scholars Program is pivotal for my goals. With its support, my plans are to specialize in sustainable fashion and integrate these principles into my design process. This scholarship serves as my passport to a world of creative possibilities, allowing me to innovate and trailblaze. When I was younger, I used to thrift old clothing and completely reimagine it in my bedroom. What looked worn out or overlooked to someone else felt full of possibility to me. I spent hours sketching ideas, sewing details by hand, and turning forgotten pieces into something expressive and personal. Looking back, I realize those moments shaped the way I see both art and people. I learned that things often become meaningful when someone takes the time to see their potential. As a fashion student, I plan to make a positive impact on the world by creating art that helps people feel confident, represented, and understood. Fashion is often viewed as superficial, but I believe it is one of the most powerful forms of storytelling. Clothing reflects identity, culture, emotion, and individuality. Through my designs, I hope to create pieces that allow people to feel unapologetically themselves. Representation is especially important to me because I know what it feels like to look at creative industries and not always see yourself reflected back. Too often, fashion promotes narrow standards of beauty and excludes people who do not fit a certain image. I want my work to challenge that mindset and create collections inspired by diverse experiences and communities that are often overlooked in fashion spaces. My experiences at SCAD have strengthened this goal. Being surrounded by creatives from different backgrounds has shown me how art can build empathy and connection. Through volunteering and community initiatives, I have learned that creativity can extend far beyond the runway. Whether helping restore parks and greenspaces in Atlanta or participating in collaborative projects, I have seen how creativity can bring people together and inspire positive change. Sustainability is another major part of the impact I hope to make. My love for thrifting and upcycling sparked an awareness of how much waste exists within the fashion industry. As a future designer, I want to create responsibly and encourage others to rethink overconsumption. Ultimately, I want my art to leave people feeling seen. If someone can wear one of my designs and feel more confident, accepted, or connected to themselves, then I know I have made a difference. Through fashion, I hope to create more than clothing. When attempting to characterize myself in a statement, it is as if I were trying to fit a winter coat into a shoe box. I am many things. A woman. A daughter. An innovator. A trailblazer. An artist. I am inspired by their ability to construct loud femininity by using pearls, tulle, and ribbons. One change I would make is for Dr. King's dream to be realized. Black people are still marginalized and unable to achieve the American dream. This change is important to me because, as a Black woman, I see and feel the impact of racial inequality every day. Even though I have achieved a lot in my life so far, I know that many others who look like me do not have the same opportunities. I have been fortunate to receive honors such as the YoungArts Winner of Distinction, Scholastics Gold Key Winner, and Congressional Art Winner. These achievements have given me a platform to express my creativity and share my voice. I remember the day I won the YoungArts award – the pride in my parents' eyes was unforgettable. It felt like a victory not just for me but for my entire family. However, I know that many talented Black individuals do not get the same recognition or opportunities. This is why I believe it is crucial to create a world where everyone, regardless of race, can achieve their dreams. At Savannah College of Art & Design, I will be majoring in Fashion. Fashion is a powerful tool for self-expression and can be used to challenge societal norms and promote diversity. My love for fashion began when I was a child, watching my grandmother sew. She taught me that clothing can tell a story and be a source of pride. Through my studies, I hope to bring more representation of Black culture into the fashion industry. By doing so, I aim to break down stereotypes and show the world the beauty and richness of Black culture. In high school, I was involved in various clubs and organizations that focused on making a positive impact. As a member of Creatives Want Change and A More Artful Jacksonville, I worked on projects that aimed to bring awareness to social issues through art. One project that stands out was a mural we created in downtown Jacksonville, depicting the history and resilience of the Black community. Seeing people stop and engage with our work, sharing their own stories and struggles, was incredibly powerful and reaffirmed my belief in the power of art to create change. Despite my achievements and involvement, I know that there is still much work to be done. Black people continue to face systemic racism and inequality in many areas of life. We can create a world where everyone has the opportunity to succeed and live the American dream. Society often undervalues Black contributions and culture. I understand the importance of representation in all fields, including fashion. By pursuing a career in fashion, I am not only following my passion but also taking a stand for more inclusive and diverse representation. My journey has been both challenging and rewarding. The honors I've received are a testament to my hard work and dedication, but they also highlight the unequal landscape many Black artists face. There are countless Black creatives who, despite their talent, do not receive the recognition they deserve. This inequality is something I am determined to address through my work in fashion. By infusing my designs with elements of Black culture and history, I aim to celebrate and elevate the stories and aesthetics that are often overlooked.
