Becoming an esthetician would mean that I would finally be able to help people become more confident in their physical identity, but possibly mentally as well. As a young Navajo girl, I grew up on the Navajo reservation. My skincare consisted of a Dove soap bar, and water in a barrel that we would siphon out of a water tank that sat in a small metal bowl tin. In my culture we resonated with traditional practices, and being able to incorporate those into my daily routines not only honors my heritage but also gives my routine a meaning to me. My mother and father both had bad cases of acne, and had the temptation to pop every pimple, and that led all five of my siblings to follow in their steps. I knew early on that having a pimple was normal, at least for me. But in high school, every one else was different and their skin was made of glass, and glowed like the sun. It was confusing but yet my self confidence took a toll throughout my teenage years into my college years, and my attempts of addressing these issues often led to damaging my skin. It was then that I decided to educate myself, and start taking care of my skin. Throughout my journey, I've come to appreciate the diversity of skin tones and textures that exist within our community and how willing all of us are to help one another. Sadly that the diversity isn't adequately addressed in mainstream skincare practices in rural areas. My experience with skincare ignited my passion to educate myself about the importance of ingredients and routines that protect and repair my skin barrier. Becoming an esthetician allows me to not only educate others on effective skincare practices but also to develop personalized solutions to those with specific skin problems. By establishing my own brand and business, I envision creating a platform where I can become an advocate and cater to my people. This type of independence not only aligns with my personal values but also allows me to contribute to my community while pursuing a fulfilling career. Ultimately, becoming an esthetician represents more than just a stable career choice. It embodies my passion for skincare, my dedication to serving my community, and my commitment to personal and professional growth. I am eager to embark on this journey, where I can combine my cultural heritage, personal experiences, and professional skills to make a positive impact on the lives of others. It's about taking control of my career, loving what I do, and making a meaningful difference—one glowing complexion at a time.
