The symphony of my life has been an off-key melody, punctuated by the harsh notes of domestic abuse, financial hardship, caring for a special needs child, and the disharmony of homelessness. These experiences tested me, threatened to break me, but ultimately, they became the catalysts for my return to school and my pursuit of a degree in accounting. The scars of domestic abuse ran deep, both emotionally and financially. It forced me to flee our home with nothing but the clothes on my back and my precious sons, the oldest who has autism diagnosis. Suddenly, the single mother stereotype I once held at arm's length became my reality. Juggling multiple minimum wage jobs to survive while providing for my sons and their unique needs was a constant pressure cooker. However, even in the face of homelessness and overwhelming challenges, a flicker of hope remained. Witnessing my son's strength and resilience in the face of his own difficulties awakened a fierce determination within me. I vowed to build a future where we wouldn't just survive but thrive. The turning point came when I decided to leave the workforce, go back to school, and take care of my young kids. This lifeline allowed me to enroll as an undergraduate in accounting.
