Growing up in Cape Verde, my parents had only completed third grade. This taught me the value of education early on. Moving to the United States, I saw education as my path to a better future, despite not knowing English. High school was challenging, but I graduated with a high GPA, showing my perseverance. After, financial responsibilities forced me to work full-time, delaying college. Balancing work and school was tough, but I returned to earn my bachelor's degree with a 3.5 GPA. Now, I aim to pursue a master's in social work to make a meaningful impact in my community.

Success for me, an immigrant from Cape Verde looking to pursue a master's degree in Social Work involves more than personal achievement; it encompasses a deep commitment to effecting meaningful change in the lives of individuals and communities facing socio-economic challenges or marginalization. My journey towards success is marked by several key aspirations and commitments.
Firstly, achieving a profound understanding of social work principles, methodologies, and ethical practices is foundational. This knowledge equips me with the necessary tools to advocate for and empower vulnerable populations effectively. It involves not only academic learning but also practical application through fieldwork and hands-on experience, which the scholarship would enable me to fully immerse myself in without financial constraints.
Furthermore, success in my field is about implementing initiatives and programs that contribute tangibly to positive social change. This could range from developing community-based interventions to advocating for policy reforms that address systemic inequalities and injustices. These initiatives aim to promote equality and enhance the overall well-being of individuals and families who are often marginalized or overlooked.
Assuming leadership roles within organizations dedicated to social justice is another crucial aspect of my definition of success. Leadership allows me to influence broader strategies and policies, leading to more significant impacts on the communities I serve. It involves not only leading by example but also fostering a collaborative environment where diverse perspectives are valued and solutions are inclusive and sustainable.
Continuous learning and professional development are integral to my journey towards success. Social issues evolve rapidly, and staying updated with the latest research, best practices, and innovations in social work ensures that my interventions remain relevant and effective. The scholarship would facilitate access to specialized training, mentorship programs, and networking opportunities, all of which are essential for my ongoing growth as a social work professional.
Moreover, finding fulfillment in my work is a critical component of success. Knowing that my efforts contribute to a more just and equitable society gives purpose and meaning to my career. It motivates me to persevere through challenges and setbacks, knowing that each small step forward is a step towards a better future for those who need support the most.

In conclusion, success to me as an immigrant pursuing a master's degree in Social Work is defined by my ability to leverage education, experience, and opportunities to create positive and lasting change in society.

Connie Konatsotis Scholarship
My name is Barros, and I was born in Cape Verde. A small third world country on the west coast of Africa, where education isn’t easily obtained, especially by women. I came from a family where I am the first woman to obtain a bachelors degree. Due to
poverty, my parents could only attend school up until the 3rd grade. As an immigrant I faced many challenges. I experienced language barriers, cultural adjustment, finding employment, navigating legal processes, and sometimes discrimination and xenophobia. Lack of access to healthcare and education was also challenging. Additionally, maintaining connections with family and loved ones back home while building a new life was difficult. All of these challenges helped me to become the person I am today. The journey wasn’t easy or short. I started college in 2011 and due to financial difficulties I had to stop and obtain full time employment in order to afford basic life necessities. However, getting a degree was always a goal I was going to achieve even if it was going to take me decades. In 2020 after losing my job due to the COVID 19 pandemic, I decided it was time to work towards a better future. I returned to school and in December of 2023 I finished my degree in social services. Now I am aiming to obtain a master degree in social work so that I can inspire other women to pursue a higher education and show them that education can be a powerful tool that can provide them with knowledge, skills, and opportunities. With education they can gain financial independence through employment or entrepreneurship, which can increase their decision-making power within their families and communities. It can also raise awareness about rights we have as women, such as health, and reproductive choices. I want to show women, especially women in my country that education can enable them to make informed decisions about their lives. Furthermore, it can help them become agents of change within their communities, advocating for gender equality, social justice, and access to education for future generations. Today I work for a non profit housing advocacy organization , where I provide a voice to my community and ensure access to affordable housing. Once I complete my MSW, I plan to work with the elderly population and become an advocate and raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by the elderly, advocating for their rights, and working towards improving their quality of life.
