I still remember my conversation with a blood donor during my volunteer shift for the American Red Cross the last couple of weeks. I was standing in front of him, looking straight into his eyes. At the time, I was completely present. I focused on every piece of detail that he shared with me and occasionally repeated some information to clarify that I understood him correctly. Since I concentrated, I am surprised at how many of his details are retained in my mind right now. For example, I can recall that he had worked for the Navy since he was twelve and wished to retire this year and move to Australia or Vietnam. In exchange, I discussed my desire to be influential in English as well as my professional goal of being a nurse, and I appreciated his encouragement to be brave and speak English with more people. I am happy that we gave each other our full attention and created a meaningful conversation and connection. That is what listening means to me. I believe active listening means focusing on others and sharing relevant pieces of our lives with them to create a balanced and satisfying conversation. Being a good listener is essential to me, especially as I pursue my dream of becoming a nurse. My listening skills will provide a fulfilling experience for my future patients and increase their satisfaction with my treatment. It will also create a meaningful connection between us, which may last a lifetime. The sense of connection that comes from actively listening is why I value every conversation I have with others. I hope to meet the donor at the American Red Cross again, and at that time, I will ask him whether he could finally retire and pursue his dream of traveling!
