    During my professional journey as a comprehensive behavioral intervention special education teacher, I demonstrated exceptional leadership skills by addressing a critical need within our school district. While my primary role was focused on special education, my passion for mental health drove me to identify a significant gap in our approach to supporting students who live in our urban city and face higher rates of trauma. Recognizing the high incidence of trauma among our students and the challenges our staff faced in managing related behaviors, I felt compelled to act. I believe that fostering empathy among our educators could be an effective solution. To address this, I proposed a presentation to the administration on the importance and application of empathy in supporting traumatized students. Preparing for the presentation involved thorough research and careful planning. I focused on demonstrating how empathy could be used as an effective tool to connect with and support these students, detailing both the theoretical underpinnings and practical strategies. I also highlighted the positive outcomes that empathy-based approaches could achieve, both in terms of student behavior and overall school climate. Delivering the presentation was a pivotal moment. I communicated not only the why but also the how of using empathy, providing actionable steps that staff could implement immediately. Furthermore, I educated the staff about what goes on in the brain when one is empathized with. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Many staff members reached out to me afterward, sharing their success stories and expressing gratitude for the new perspective and tools they had gained. They had stories of building relationships and de-escalating situations quicker than previous attempts with other resources. Which were some of the outcomes I was hoping to see. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of empathy and education. It also solidified my commitment to using my leadership skills to drive positive change. To stand up and speak on something you believe in. In my future career, I plan to leverage these skills to deliver presentations and workshops to broader communities, including at conferences. My goal is to disseminate accurate information, combat stigmatization, and address the spread of misinformation about mental health. By applying these leadership skills, I aim to foster a more informed and empathetic society, where mental health challenges are understood and addressed with compassion and effectiveness.
