Bio

Hi everyone! My name is Nicole Huyer and I am from beautiful Rhode Island. I would consider myself to be a very motivated individual. In High School I was a tri-varsity captain for volleyball, basketball, and softball, and in College I play women's basketball for the Catholic University of America. Go Cardinals! I love playing sports, not only for health benefits, but because it teaches me valuable lessons I can apply to the classroom and in a work environment. I am very competitive and mentally strong. I just started attending The Catholic University of America in D.C., and I am excited to be in the economic and political hub of the nation. In school, I am majoring in International Economics and Finance and minoring in Politics. In high school I was apart on a Business Program which sparked my interest in business and economics. My 1st place DECA win in the Accounting Application series in 2017 is what solidified this interest. I am very passionate about continuing my economic interests after college, which is why I plan to further my education with a fellowship, internship, or Master's degree. I am apart of several extracurriculars including political and academic based clubs. In my free time I enjoy reading, writing poems, proses, and songs, and playing my guitar and piano.

    REVIVAL Scholarship
I will be attending The Catholic University of America as a student athlete in the fall. I will be pursuing my Bachelor of Science in the International Economics and Finance Honors Program. I want to enjoy my college education by gaining real work experience through an internship, enhancing my athletic abilities, forming long lasting friendships with classmates and the basketball players on my team, and ultimately be well prepared for a career. Catholic University’s strong academics, athletics, spiritual life, and close proximity to our nation’s capital will help me achieve my goals. A successful college career means acquiring the skills and knowledge needed to succeed and excel in my economics field and in all aspects of my life. By taking intensive courses at my University, I will develop the skills necessary to truly understand and analyze information in Economics. Taking elective courses will help me learn communication, writing, and presentation skills. Debate classes will give me the ability to look at issues from different viewpoints, while still supporting my opinion using evidence. I will also have the opportunity to play women’s basketball at Catholic University. I am really excited about this because I have been playing basketball since I was nine years old. It has always been a dream of mine to play in college. As a senior at Portsmouth Abbey, I was elected a tri-varsity captain in basketball, softball, and volleyball. I have also received honors and awards for each of these sports. Being a student athlete will shape me as a leader and a team player. My philosophy is to make those around me the best players possible, because we win and lose as a team. I apply this philosophy not only to sports, but to life as well. I have learned how to work in a group and act in the benefit of the team. Competitive basketball has instilled within me a winning mentality. I am such a competitive person, and this extends from the basketball court to anything I do. I would consider myself to be a very dedicated person. These traits will benefit me in my career. My education at Catholic University will allow me to experience life as a student athlete. The basketball coaches are excellent teachers who will help me further my athletic abilities and achieve my goals of becoming an exceptional basketball player, team player, and leader. The Catholic University of America will help me become a well-rounded student athlete who excels in the classroom, on the court, at an internship, and in society. Everything college has to offer, through academics, sports, clubs, social aspects, resources, and location, will help me reach my goals of obtaining an internship, being prepared for a career in economics, enhancing my athletic ability, forming long lasting friendships with classmates and the basketball players on my team, giving back to the community, and spiritually evolving.

Catholic University’s strong academics, athletics, spiritual life, and close proximity to our nation’s capital will help me achieve my goals. At North Kingstown High School I was one of the few freshman to be accepted into the Business Academy. After placing first in a DECA business competition and earning the opportunity to compete in the DECA International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, I was inspired to pursue a business related path. My participation in DECA and working with my mentor sparked my interest in obtaining an International Economics and Finance degree at Catholic University. Economics has a wide range of job opportunities and will allow me to make connections across many disciplines. Doing well in my classes and learning about topics which pertain to my major will be one part in helping me accomplish my goal of exceling academically, and acquiring an internship then job in my field. Catholic University offers me the prospect for internships with the government and the private sector. As my education evolves, there will be so many opportunities for me and paths to explore with my economics degree. I also have the opportunity of playing women’s basketball at Catholic University. I have been playing basketball since I was nine years old, and it has always been a dream of mine to play in college. The basketball coaches are excellent teachers who will help me further my athletic abilities and achieve my goals of becoming an exceptional basketball player, team player, and leader. My faith and spirituality are important components of the person that I am. Going to Catholic University for the next four years will offer me countless opportunities to enhance this. Taking courses in theology, philosophy, and rhetoric will increase my understanding of and encourage my own spiritual growth. High school at Portsmouth Abbey has given me an interesting perspective. Interacting with Benedictine Monks on campus, taught me the importance of being a selfless, morally good person who is passionate about her beliefs. The service opportunities offered by my University will help me achieve my goal of giving back to the community. In 8th grade I started my own business, T.A.B. Services, where I Tutor, Athletically train, and Babysit children. As a student athlete, one of my passions is working with young girls to develop their athletic abilities and gain confidence. I have donated my time and expertise to my business, and Catholic University will help me have a community outlet. It is very important to me that I give back to my community. I am lucky enough to be attending a University which encourages its students to volunteer in and foster relationships within the community. "Your Success" Youssef Scholarship
Education is essential to success. As a Freshman in college, I can look back at my high school career and safely say that my education is what got me here today. My high school experience was unlike most; I transferred schools my Junior year. At North Kingstown High School (2016-2018), I was admitted into the Business Program, meaning I was able to take business-specific courses. I took classes such as Accounting, Sports Marketing, Entrepreneurship, and Finance. I enjoyed and thrived in these classes. This inspired me to join the DECA business club. This academic based club furthered my interest in business, and upon me winning the 2018 Career Development Conference for "Accounting Application Series" at Johnson and Wales University, I gained the academic confidence I needed. This win encouraged me down a potential business major route. I transferred to Portsmouth Abbey School (2018-2020) for my Junior year of high school. My academic record along with my DECA win solidified my acceptance to this prestigious boarding school. At Portsmouth Abbey, I was really able to enhance my knowledge and be a high performer in the classroom. Smaller class sizes and wonderful teachers helped me reach my fullest potential as both a student and an individual. I was able to take one particular class that rekindled by interest in business: Economics/Political Science/ International Relations. This class was my favorite of my entire high school career. Mr. Hobbins, my instructor, was extremely knowledgeable and taught the class very well. This course, along with my previous business-interested background, inspired my college field of study; at the Catholic University of America I am majoring in International Economics and Finance Honors and minoring in Politics. Doing well academically has always been very important to me. Anything below a B+ was unacceptable. This hard bar taught me proper study habits from an early age. Being a student athlete, it was hard at first to balance academics, athletics, and extracurriculars. However, sports has given me the ability to compartmentalize and organize my time excellently. At Portsmouth Abbey, students were required to participate in a sport or extracurricular each season. As a senior I was a tri-varsity captain for Basketball, Volleyball, and Softball. Portsmouth Abbey provided me with the educational and athletic excellence to be accepted into a phenomenal college, as well as prepared me for the rigors of college-level courses. At the Catholic University of America, I am a student athlete in one of the more challenging majors, but I am succeeding with a 3.8 GPA. I even plan to extend my education by obtaining my Masters Degree. I am very lucky to have experienced such wonderful education, and I have even developed a passion for it. My education throughout high school has directly impacted my college career as well as the way I perceive learning. I believe education is essential to personal success and I am so grateful for my educational opportunities.

My favorite film would have to be Gattaca. It is very interesting to think about the benefits and consequences of genetic modification and how that would affect our society. It is especially though-provoking to think about this since we currently have the technology to go this route if we wanted to.
Gabriella Carter Music and Me Scholarship
Whether it was for getting excited before a sports game, studying, or just relaxing, music has always been an important part of my life. I consider myself a rock and roller due to my dad's influence. He was very big into rock in the 70s and 80s, and he instilled in me a love for great music. While I do love the classics like The Scorpions, or AC/DC, or Billy Squier, my favorite band right now is The Pretty Reckless. They are trying to bring rock and roll back to the digitalized music industry. I love lead singer Taylor Momsen and I know almost all of her songs. I interpret "House on a Hill", one of my favorites, as a commentary about society. It represents the horrors of politics and the destruction of war and division, something that seems to have become particularly relevant not just to our society, but to the world. The music video is about WW2, but I think this song is encompasses much more. In the song, the lyrics mention children who are victim to the horrors of war. Particularly, they lose their innocence and ethereal glow. One of her most powerful lines, I believe, is "I am not afraid / I won't burn out in this place." The "House on a Hill" is a beacon to lost souls, reminding them that through courage they can face hate, war, and destruction. Taylor Momsen is an excellent writer, not only for the messages within her songs, but the way she uses literary devices to convey them to her audience. Through complex and relatable lyrics, she is able to elicit strong emotions. While I believe this song is about larger wars which affect entire populations, I also think it can apply to individuals. Human beings constantly undergo internal battles and are often at war with themselves. This song explains the ugly truth of war while simultaneously serving as a "light ahead" or beacon of hope. I love this song for its meaningful lyrics and raw emotion. Momsen is an amazing artist and a true beacon of light for those who need it. As a musician, she has inspired me. I have always loved music, but I was never especially gifted at creating it myself, something I had always wanted to do. The first song I ever listened to by her was "Heaven Knows", and I immediately aspired to be like her. I have always been a good writer, but never had the inspiration to start creating music. After finding her band and listening to her songs, I began writing music myself. I started off my putting piano chords to some of my poems, and upon getting my guitar, I began creating full songs. "House on a Hill" encourages listeners to understand the difficulties you may face, but persevere through any hardships. Momsen has truly inspired me as an individual, and her music plays a large part in my life.

What is more courageous than expressing and protesting your beliefs? These three images were from the March For Life in January of 2019. It was a wonderful experience getting to be apart of such a large and righteous movement. I went to D.C. to participate in the MFL through my school, Portsmouth Abbey. Fifty or so other kindhearted individuals expressed their love of life by coming to D.C. for the movement, the politics, and the amazing events the MFL hosted. I believe this experience emboldened me both politically and as an individual.

I do not shop online often, but when I do I make sure my purchase is a great product from a great online store. First, Amazon is the site I use the most for textbooks, basketball apparel, and even Halloween costumes. I play basketball for the Catholic University of America and I am always needing new basketball shorts and socks! Next, I have recently have been buying books and Cardinal (our mascot) apparel from the Catholic University of America Bookstore (associated with Barnes and Nobles). They give great discounts for students and their clothing is so comfortable. I already have two sweatshirts, a pair of sweatpants, and fuzzy socks with the Catholic Cardinal logo on them! Finally, I have been buying awesome and surprisingly affordable jewelry (primarily rings and necklaces) from Gthic.com. Don't let the name fool you! This online based company has jewelry for people off all genres, affordable prices, and makes top quality products. Concluding, my three favorite places to shop online are Amazon, the Catholic University bookstore, and Gthic.com.
