“Would it be weird if I said that the Atlantic Salmon is my role model?” my heart and mind debate whether I should say it out loud or not. Probably, since my teacher was expecting me to say a person's name. Instead, I say it proudly in front of the whole class. “My greatest role model would be the Atlantic Salmon.”. My peers burst out laughing in confusion. Though I was serious, they all can’t seem to wrap their head around the fact that my role model is a fish. I was in 5th grade when my teacher told us about the journey of the salmon. Since then, I’ve always been so fascinated by it. I stand in awe of its perseverance despite knowing what is ahead of them. The salmon's journey is a mission. In the vast evergreen forest where you can hear streams of crystal waters flow, the salmon’s destiny awaits. An Atlantic salmon travels miles from seawater to freshwater just to lay its eggs. To reach their destination, they go through streams of water where they enter a series of challenges and enter a state of vulnerability. After miles of traveling, there comes a stage where seals try to catch salmon but only take out the eggs they carry. I tried to put myself in the salmon's shoe and it all seemed to make sense. Its story is like the last puzzle piece in a 3000-piece puzzle. In that case, I would be the salmon, while their eggs are the potential I carry within me as I grow throughout the years. The predators who try to take out the salmon eggs would be the people I encounter in my life who try to bring me down and tell me that I can’t reach my destiny. Finally, the freshwater stream would be the place I am destined to be. When I turned 11 years old, the uncontrollable force of life struck me. I held the responsibility of raising myself and my little sister in a small town where we had no family or any familiarities. Paying bills, finding ways to pay for our rent, and doing all the house chores were a lot to take in at such a young age. As I walk down the streets of downtown Baguio City as I carry bags of groceries while lining up for bills payment, all the heads turn toward me, eyes look at me from head to toe, and hear voices ridiculing the things I do. Growing up, I’ve always been so proud of the hard work and effort I put into to be able to reach my goals in pursuit of better education in America. My peers would always tell me how that would be impossible because of our financial state. “Hindi yan mangyayare, Nicole. Wag mo na paasahin sarili mo.” “(That will never happen, Nicole. Don’t bring your hopes up)”, they mockingly tell me. Despite the countless negative comments I get everywhere I turn, I remain the unwavering faith and I can say that it is because I look up to the pacific salmon that never gives up no matter how many predators may come it's way throughout its journey.
