For a long time, I thought incarceration would be the end of my story. Instead, it became the place where I began to rebuild my life, discover my purpose, and understand the power of education. It took away my freedom and separated me from my children, which is one of the hardest parts of my experience. Ultimately, incarceration also forced me to reflect on my choices, take accountability, and decide what kind of person I wanted to be moving forward. Through that experience, I learned that my past does not have to define my future. I learned resilience, discipline, patience, and the importance of using every opportunity to grow. Education became one of the most powerful parts of my transformation. While incarcerated, I was given the opportunity to attend college through Eastern Michigan University’s College in Prison Program. That opportunity gave me hope, structure, confidence, and a vision for my future that I had not always believed was possible. One of the most meaningful parts of my journey is that education has allowed me to become a better role model for my children. Although I cannot change the pain caused by my incarceration, I can show them what it looks like to learn from mistakes, take responsibility, and rebuild a life with purpose. My journey has even encouraged my son, who applied and was accepted to Eastern Michigan University now. This is significant because in our family no one has gone to college or even finished high school. Seeing him take that step means more than I can express because it shows me that growth is not only changing my life but also influencing the next generation of my family. My experience with EMU’s College in Prison program has also shaped my academic and career ambitions. I am currently continuing my education at Eastern Michigan University, and I am a intern for the College in Prison Program. My goal is to dedicate my career and life to creating opportunities for change through education. I want to help others who have been impacted by incarceration believe that they are still capable of success. I know how powerful it can be when someone is given access to education, encouragement, and a real chance to build a different future. In many ways EMU’s College in Prison program gave me more than college credits. It has given me a supportive network of compassionate individuals who care about me and my future, gave me a purpose in life, and the confidence to be successful. Incarceration and education helped me rebuild my self-esteem, take pride in accomplishments, and create a new identity beyond incarceration. I now see myself as a student, a leader, an advocate, and role model. Before incarceration, I was on a path that could have destroyed my future, but instead, it became the turning point that helped me rebuild my life with purpose and stability towards a meaningful and successful life.
