Since childhood, every child dream of his professional future considering a diversity of alternatives that are important for a healthy society. As the years go by many children’s changes their desires in future professions; instead, since I was a child, I have always had the dream of being able to study and excel in the field of medicine, since it is a profession that encompasses a variety of areas in which we can help and reach many people. For this, at the age of 13 I made the decision to apply and enter a leading residential school in Puerto Rico, a specialized school in science and math. With my effort, dedication, and support from my parents I was able to successfully complete this challenge. It is my desire and goal to be able to study, prepare and serve through medicine, and to and meet the goals even with the difficulties that lead me to be the first generation completing a career in medicine. This desire to acquire more experience and knowledge in the field of science has increased since I started studying Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus. I have had the experience of being able to participate directly and indirectly in the Boys Scout of America movement. One of its strong ideals is the motivation to be able to serve your community and your country. There are many experiences that I have been able to learn through community service, participating in projects that have allowed me to reinforce the important value of helping people without expecting something in return. Empathy, a value that I learned when Puerto Rico suffered a catastrophic event, and I understood, that in order to continue forward I had to help others in the best way possible. At that time, community service helped me to understand the need that people had, generating in me the desire to help them by focusing on the area of medicine. Bringing food and medicine to the needy, taking gifts to places of abused girls and women, visiting homes of elders and orphaned children were some of the experiences that marked me and helped me focus my efforts in the field of medicine. One of the experiences that most determined my desire to study medicine was an event that occurred ten years ago on Christmas Eve; where my mother suffered an accident from which she could have died or become paraplegic. With the help of excellent doctors and physical therapists who were the instruments that gave a second chance to a person and gave hope to a family. This experience not only impacted my personal life, but also determined my motivation to continue my studies in a career that impacts other lives and families. By being a student who is part of the first generation of medicine in my family I understand that it requires many challenges, especially economic challenges, but the important thing to continue forward in the goals is the determination to achieve the objectives that are proposed, regardless of the obstacles that are crossed. I am motivated by my family to continue to move forward and to realize that no matter how difficult a career may be, with support and determination you can achieve your goals. As a Puerto Rican and part of a minority group that desires to contribute to the scientific field, it is an honor that even with limitations, we manage to have opportunities like these for students with the desire to serve and excel in this field, and thus provide the best for our communities.
