My main goal in life is to save as many people as possible. This is why I am pursuing a career in medicine. Growing up much of my dad's side of the family suffered from heart conditions. Medical expenses were extremely high to the point where it was impossible to live a fulfilling life without having to work until the age of 80. Once I become a practicing surgeon, I want to give back to families in need of health care with specific heart conditions.

Growing up as a kid in a small home in Charlotte, North Carolina, it was only my parents and my brother. From a distance, you could say it was a peaceful and quiet home, but this was far from what was going on. My brother, a high schooler who was attending Myers Park at the time was going through immense addiction and substance abuse. These issues bled into the household, to the point where coming home from school became a personal fear for me. Screams came from my mom trying to defend my brother's use of drugs to cope with his anxiety. There were nights when the family would stay up waiting for him to come home, worrying about his whereabouts and what he was doing. My parent's relationship deteriorated as a result of what occurred, and ultimately led to their separation in 2017.
In middle and high school, I often felt neglected as much of my parents' attention was rightfully directed towards my brother. The constant cycle of treatments and therapy for him became the primary source of my parents' worries. While I was supposedly in a better place, I couldn't escape the feeling of being overshadowed. Only with time and mature conversations with my parents did I come to understand the necessity of their focus on my brother's recovery. I realized that addicts can't navigate the path to recovery alone; there must be someone willing to be there when they are tempted to fall back into the destructive cycle. This perspective has offered me a deeper understanding of the complexities involved and has contributed to my personal growth.
Heading off to university soon, the adversities I've faced have forged a resilient and determined individual. My objective is lucid: to leverage my experiences in a manner that contributes to the well-being of others. Witnessing the toll of addiction on my family has solidified my resolve to pursue a major in chemistry and embark on the premed track. My goal is to integrate my scientific expertise with a compassionate approach to healthcare. Through understanding the biochemical underpinnings of addiction and mental health, I aspire to contribute to innovative solutions and treatments that address these challenges. The empathy cultivated through my journey fuels my commitment to a medical career that not only focuses on physical health but also prioritizes the holistic well-being of individuals and families affected by substance abuse. Armed with a scientific foundation and a profound understanding of human experiences, I am poised to make a meaningful impact on the intersection of chemistry and compassionate healthcare.
