Selflessness is about putting others' needs ahead of your own, and for me, it’s a guiding principle in how I approach both my personal life and my community. I’ve come to realize that selflessness isn’t always about grand gestures, but rather about everyday acts of kindness and support that can significantly impact the lives of others. Throughout my life, I’ve tried to embody selflessness by being attentive to the needs of those around me and offering help when it’s needed, whether in moments of crisis or simply when someone needs an extra hand.
One of the most significant examples of this occurred when a close friend of mine faced a serious mental health crisis. She had been struggling with anxiety and depression for months, but it wasn’t until one night, when she reached out to me in the middle of a panic attack, that I fully understood the extent of her pain. It was a Friday night, and I had been preparing for a major exam the following week. However, when she called, sobbing and unable to calm herself down, I knew she needed someone who could offer her comfort and stability. Without hesitation, I dropped what I was doing and drove to her house, where I stayed with her throughout the night.
During that time, I talked her through her feelings, helped her breathe through the anxiety, and made sure she felt safe. I also encouraged her to seek professional help, offering to accompany her to counseling sessions if that would make her feel more comfortable. Over the following weeks, I continued to check in on her regularly, prioritizing her well-being over my own stress, and eventually, she began to improve. Seeing her grow stronger reaffirmed my belief in the power of being there for others, even when it requires personal sacrifice.
In my everyday life, I try to incorporate smaller acts of selflessness as well. Whether it’s tutoring classmates who are struggling in school, helping my younger sibling with homework, or simply listening to a friend who’s had a rough day, I’ve learned that selflessness doesn’t always have to be dramatic. Often, it’s about being present for the people around you and offering your time and energy to help them succeed or feel valued.
These experiences have shaped my understanding of selflessness as a practice of empathy, service, and sacrifice. By helping others, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of what it means to be part of a community, and how important it is to offer support to those who need it. Selflessness, to me, is about recognizing the humanity in others and choosing to act in ways that contribute to their well-being, even when it’s not the easiest or most convenient path. Through these actions, I aim to embody the values of compassion, kindness, and service in everything I do.
First-Gen Futures Scholarship
Pursuing higher education is deeply personal for me, not only because of the opportunities it provides but also for the transformation it represents. As a first-generation student, higher education signifies breaking barriers and creating new paths for both myself and my family. It is more than an academic pursuit—it is a commitment to personal growth and making a positive impact.
One of the primary reasons I’ve chosen this path is my desire to create meaningful change in the lives of others, particularly in student support services. My work as a Veterans Specialist has allowed me to witness firsthand the life-changing impact education can have, especially for military-affiliated students. I’ve seen how education opens doors and provides essential skills for success. This experience has shaped my passion for helping others access the resources they need to thrive academically and personally.
As a first-generation student, I had to proactively prepare myself for the challenges of college. Without family members to guide me through the admissions process or offer advice, I relied on my own research, a strong sense of determination, and mentorship from professionals. Seeking out mentors was one of the most valuable steps I took. Their guidance on everything from financial aid to course selection helped me feel confident and equipped to handle the complexities of higher education.
In addition to mentorship, I gained practical experience that prepared me for college-level work. My role as a Veterans Specialist taught me to balance multiple responsibilities, think critically, and advocate for others—all skills that have been crucial as I pursue my education. Working full-time while studying has required discipline and strong time management, which have both helped me navigate the demands of college life.
Financial preparation has also been key. As a first-generation student, I had to take full responsibility for funding my education. I applied for scholarships, sought grants, and developed strong financial literacy to manage my resources effectively. This process, though challenging, reinforced my determination and taught me the value of persistence.
Ultimately, my decision to pursue higher education stems from a belief in its power to change lives. It has already transformed my own and will allow me to create opportunities for others, particularly those who face barriers similar to mine. Through mentorship, hands-on experience, and financial preparation, I’ve built a strong foundation for success in college and beyond. I am committed to using the opportunities I gain to make a lasting impact on my community, ensuring future students have the support they need to succeed.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
I have chosen the field of education, specifically higher education administration, because I believe that access to quality education has the power to transform lives. As someone who has navigated the challenges of being a first-generation college student, I understand firsthand how crucial support systems are in ensuring academic success. My journey through the educational system, coupled with my experiences as a Veterans Specialist, has shown me the profound impact that dedicated professionals can have on students’ lives, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. This personal insight has fueled my passion for creating more inclusive, supportive environments where students can thrive.
Working with military-affiliated students, I have seen the barriers many individuals face when transitioning from military to civilian life, particularly in accessing higher education. This experience has deeply influenced my decision to focus on improving support systems for not only veterans but all students who encounter challenges, whether they stem from socioeconomic factors, disabilities, or first-generation status. I believe that education is a key to breaking cycles of inequality, and by dedicating my career to student support services, I aim to ensure that every student—regardless of their background—has access to the resources they need to succeed.
My desire to create an impact is grounded in both policy development and hands-on student support. As I work toward my Master’s degree in Student Personnel in Higher Education, I am building the skills necessary to lead institutional changes that promote equity and inclusion. My professional experience has already given me the opportunity to spearhead programs that have improved the retention and success rates of military-affiliated students, and I hope to replicate this success on a larger scale. By collaborating with educators, administrators, and policymakers, I aim to implement comprehensive programs that address not only academic needs but also mental health, financial challenges, and career readiness.
On a personal level, my goal is to become a leader in higher education administration, focusing on student affairs and veterans’ services. I want to help build stronger, more adaptable systems that meet the diverse needs of today’s student populations. My ultimate ambition is to create programs and policies that not only support students throughout their academic journeys but also equip them with the skills and confidence they need to succeed beyond graduation.
Education has given me the opportunity to create meaningful change, and I am committed to extending that opportunity to others. I believe that every student, regardless of their background, deserves the chance to pursue their dreams, and my professional passion is to help make that a reality. By advancing in this field, I can continue to advocate for policies and practices that empower students and ensure that education remains a transformative experience for all.
Kirk I. Woods Memorial Scholarship
Education is a powerful tool that will profoundly shape my future and provide me with the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to uplift others in my community. As a first-generation student, pursuing higher education represents more than personal growth; it is a pivotal step toward breaking a generational cycle and opening doors that were previously closed to my family. My experiences have instilled in me the belief that education is the key to changing not only my life trajectory but also the lives of those I aim to serve, especially veterans and other underrepresented groups.
My educational journey so far has already enhanced my ability to make a positive impact. My current role as a Veterans Specialist at Santa Fe College, combined with my Bachelor’s degree in Education Sciences and my ongoing pursuit of a Master’s degree in Student Personnel in Higher Education, has prepared me to support military-affiliated students in their academic and professional lives. I have successfully led initiatives that improved veteran services, spearheaded digital transformation projects, and helped create pathways to employment for veteran graduates. These experiences have given me the opportunity to witness firsthand the transformative power of education, not just as a tool for personal advancement but also as a catalyst for broader community change.
The skills I am gaining—both technical and interpersonal—will allow me to give back in more substantial ways in the future. For example, my background in program administration and leadership has already enabled me to advocate for policy changes that improved salary structures for military-affiliated staff. I envision using my education to continue shaping policies and programs that support veterans and students from marginalized backgrounds. With my ongoing education, I will be even better equipped to influence institutional change, focusing on increasing access to resources that enable students to succeed.
Furthermore, as someone with extensive experience in community service and volunteerism, my goal is to leverage my education to give back in a meaningful way. Serving on the Alachua County Veterans Services Advisory Board and facilitating partnerships that secured funding for veteran services are examples of how I’ve begun this work. My future plans include expanding these efforts by using my education to influence educational policies, build stronger community networks, and develop innovative programs that address the evolving needs of underrepresented students and veterans.
Ultimately, my education will enable me to bring a deeper understanding of academic systems and the barriers that prevent students—particularly first-generation and military-affiliated students—from achieving their full potential. It will also position me as a leader in my field, able to advocate for those who face similar challenges. My long-term vision is to use my expertise to create sustainable support systems that ensure access to quality education and resources for future generations. Through this work, I hope to contribute to a society that is more inclusive, equitable, and supportive of every individual's right to thrive academically and professionally.
Education is not just a personal goal; it is a tool that I intend to use to uplift others. As a first-generation student, my path forward is deeply intertwined with my responsibility to create opportunities for others, just as education has created opportunities for me.
Boatswain’s Mate Third Class Antonie Bernard Thomas Memorial Scholarship
The memory of Antonie “Tony” Bernard Thomas, a man of selfless service and resilience, resonates deeply with me as a third-generation Navy veteran. My grandfathers served aboard carriers and submarines during World War II and the Korean War, my father worked as a Boiler Technician on the USS Newport News during the Vietnam War, and I followed in their footsteps as an E-5 Fire Controlman aboard the USS Gonzalez. These experiences have instilled in me leadership, resilience, and a dedication to service—values I carry into my professional and academic life.
Leadership and communication are central to my role as a Veteran Services Specialist at Santa Fe College, where I assist 400 to 550 military-affiliated students each semester. My Navy experience taught me the importance of decisive action and clear communication, which I now apply in leading my team. I spearheaded a digital transformation that improved efficiency and reduced processing errors by 30%. This initiative required not only technical expertise but also the ability to mentor colleagues through the transition. By fostering strong communication and teamwork, I ensured a smoother process for both students and staff.
Resilience has been a defining trait throughout my journey. Serving aboard the USS Gonzalez required adaptability and problem-solving under pressure—skills I now use to balance full-time work with pursuing a Master of Education. Working with veterans, many of whom face significant challenges, demands both empathy and persistence. Maintaining my own well-being while supporting others has been critical to ensuring I can meet these demands effectively.
Selflessness is a value I learned early in life, one that was reinforced during my military service. In the Navy, you place the mission and your team above personal concerns. This ethos shapes my approach to my current work with veterans. Whether helping them navigate VA benefits or advocating for policy improvements, I prioritize their needs above all else, striving to make a meaningful difference in their lives.
Focus and determination have driven me in both my career and academic pursuits. My decision to pursue a Master of Education was motivated by a desire to create better support systems for veterans and military-affiliated students. Juggling a full-time job with graduate studies can be demanding, but the discipline I developed in the Navy helps me maintain clear goals and stay organized. This determination allows me to excel in both roles, never losing sight of my larger purpose.
A strong work ethic is something I inherited from my family’s legacy of military service and honed during my own time in the Navy. Whether it’s improving operational efficiency by 20% or ensuring compliance with complex regulations, I strive to exceed expectations in all areas of my work. My commitment to hard work extends to my studies, where I apply the same dedication, knowing that my efforts will lead to better outcomes for the students and veterans I serve.
Looking ahead, my goal is to advocate for more accessible educational opportunities for military-affiliated students and to shape policies that enhance support services. I believe in the transformative power of education, and I am committed to using my skills to lead by example, serve others, and create lasting change. Reflecting on my family’s history of service, I am reminded of the profound impact leadership can have on a community, and I strive to carry that forward in my own journey.
Mental Health Importance Scholarship
Mental health plays a crucial role in both personal well-being and professional success. In the fast-paced environments I navigate—whether it’s my work in veteran services or my academic pursuits—mental wellness forms the foundation for maintaining balance and productivity. Recognizing its importance has been essential to achieving my goals, ensuring that I can handle challenges while sustaining long-term success in both my career and personal life.
As a Veteran Services Specialist and a student pursuing a Master of Education, I often face high levels of responsibility and pressure. Assisting 400 to 550 military-affiliated students each semester requires a deep commitment to empathy and focus, as well as the ability to manage complex administrative tasks while adhering to strict VA compliance standards. This role comes with the added emotional weight of supporting veterans who may be dealing with their own mental health challenges, which can be taxing without proper self-care. In addition, balancing full-time work with my academic commitments presents its own set of stressors. Without maintaining strong mental health, I would struggle to perform at my best in either role. Prioritizing my mental wellness allows me to manage stress effectively, stay focused, and deliver high-quality results consistently.
To maintain my mental health, I rely on several key strategies that help me navigate my demanding schedule. Time management is crucial. With multiple responsibilities, I utilize organizational tools like Microsoft 365, Power Automate, and Salesforce to structure my day, automate repetitive tasks, and keep track of deadlines. By doing so, I minimize the mental load of juggling too many tasks at once and reduce the risk of burnout. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal time also helps me maintain a healthy balance. For instance, I am intentional about disconnecting from work emails and notifications during my personal time, ensuring I have space to rest and recharge.
In addition to effective time management, mindfulness and physical exercise are essential practices that I incorporate into my daily routine. Engaging in mindfulness exercises, such as short meditation sessions or deep-breathing exercises, helps me stay centered and present. This practice not only reduces anxiety but also improves my focus and resilience when facing challenges. Physical activity, such as jogging and weightlifting, further supports my mental well-being. Regular exercise is a powerful stress reliever and mood enhancer, releasing endorphins that promote mental clarity and a positive mindset.
Social support also plays a vital role in maintaining my mental health. I make an effort to stay connected with friends, family, and colleagues, leaning on these relationships when I need advice, encouragement, or simply a listening ear. Having a support system reminds me that I don’t have to shoulder all burdens alone and helps me gain perspective on stressful situations.
Maintaining mental health is a lifelong commitment, one that requires consistent effort and self-awareness. I recognize that self-care is not a luxury but a necessity for long-term success. By staying mindful of my mental well-being and implementing strategies that help me thrive, I can continue to remain productive, focused, and resilient in all areas of my life.
Future Leaders Scholarship
Leadership is about identifying problems, driving innovation, and guiding others toward a common goal. As a Veteran Services Specialist at Santa Fe College, I led initiatives that improved service delivery for 400 to 550 military-affiliated students each semester since Fall 2017. Overseeing the certification and support services for these students presented significant challenges that required strong leadership. By spearheading a digital transformation, I enhanced operational efficiency and streamlined processes, ultimately making a positive impact on both the institution and the veteran community.
One of the key challenges was the reliance on manual processes to manage the certification and benefits of veteran students. Physical handling of documents and manual data entry often led to delays, affecting student satisfaction and, at times, disrupting their benefits. Ensuring compliance with evolving VA regulations was also difficult with the outdated infrastructure. Without significant changes, these inefficiencies would continue to hinder both staff and students.
To address these issues, I led a digital transformation aimed at automating the certification process for veteran students. By transitioning from paper-based to a Salesforce-based system, I improved data management and accuracy. The automated veteran profile system reduced processing errors by 30% and increased the overall speed of document handling. This shift was essential in boosting both efficiency and security for students.
I also focused on strengthening team performance by mentoring VA Work Study students who played a critical role in daily operations. Through hands-on leadership, I ensured they were well-trained in both the technical system and in delivering high-quality service. Additionally, I automated routine tasks using Microsoft 365 and Power Automate, which cut the manual workload by 30%, allowing the team to focus more on student engagement and support.
These leadership efforts had a substantial impact on both operations and student satisfaction. By digitizing over 500 veteran student records, we significantly reduced delays, enabling students to access their benefits more smoothly. The automation and reduced error rates increased operational efficiency by 20%, while the improvements in service delivery led to higher student satisfaction.
In addition to the technical upgrades, I also contributed to broader initiatives that benefited the veteran community. By advocating for policy changes at the county level, I helped improve access to veteran services, directly benefiting military-affiliated students. Within the college, mentoring and empowering my team resulted in a 25% increase in student engagement, fostering a more supportive environment.
Looking ahead, the leadership skills I developed at Santa Fe College will be integral to my future career. I plan to apply these skills to influence broader educational and policy changes, particularly for underrepresented communities. My goal is to advocate for more efficient, student-centered systems that improve services for military-affiliated students and beyond.
By continuing to lead with a focus on innovation, collaboration, and service, I aim to create positive, lasting changes in any future role I undertake.

These personal challenges have strongly influenced my decision to pursue a career in higher education. I believe that education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or neurodiversity. My experiences have given me a deep understanding of the obstacles that many students, particularly veterans and those with disabilities, face when entering higher education. I am determined to break down these barriers by advocating for more inclusive policies and support systems that help students succeed, regardless of their challenges.
In my current role as a Veterans Specialist at Santa Fe College, I see daily how vital it is to provide tailored support for military-affiliated students, many of whom face similar challenges to mine. Whether helping them navigate VA benefits or connecting them with mental health resources, I use my personal experiences to build stronger relationships and offer more meaningful support. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to ask for help, and I strive to create a safe, welcoming environment for these students, ensuring they have the tools and support needed to succeed.
Looking ahead, my goal is to continue working in higher education, using my personal and professional experiences to advocate for neurodiverse students, veterans, and others facing mental health challenges. I am particularly passionate about promoting mental health awareness and reducing the stigma around seeking help. I want to develop programs that focus on mental health, accessibility, and academic success, ensuring that every student has the resources they need to thrive.

Every student, regardless of their neurodiversity or disability, deserves an educational experience that is empowering, inclusive, and free from unnecessary barriers.
Veterans & Family Scholarship
My military experience has played a significant role in shaping who I am today and guiding my career path. I served in the U.S. Navy as a Petty Officer Second Class Fire Controlman (E5) from 2002 to 2008. During my time in the Navy, I was responsible for maintaining and repairing advanced weapons systems, but more importantly, I learned the value of leadership, teamwork, and adaptability. These experiences fostered my desire to continue serving others, especially those who, like me, have faced the unique challenges of transitioning from military to civilian life.
After completing my military service, I found a natural transition into veteran advocacy, specifically within higher education. Over the past several years, I have worked as a Veterans Specialist at Santa Fe College, helping military-affiliated students navigate the complexities of their educational benefits and providing support during their academic journeys. My role involves ensuring compliance with VA regulations, digitizing student records, and developing orientation programs that make the transition to higher education smoother for veteran students. Since then, my experiences in veteran services and higher education have deepened my commitment to improving access to resources and education for underserved communities.
After transitioning from the military, I was drawn to veteran advocacy, particularly in helping fellow veterans navigate the challenges of civilian life and education. This led me to my role as a Veterans Specialist at Santa Fe College, where I have spent the last several years assisting military-affiliated students in understanding and accessing their educational benefits. My work involves streamlining processes, automating systems, and developing programs that improve veterans’ experiences in higher education. One of the most critical needs in my local community is ensuring that veterans and military-affiliated students have the resources to transition successfully into higher education. Many veterans face mental health challenges, financial constraints, and a lack of familiarity with academic environments. My education is preparing me to address these issues on a broader scale by advocating for policies and programs that support veterans in higher education. As a Mental Health First Aid Instructor, I am particularly committed to addressing mental health needs, ensuring that veterans and other students receive the support they need to thrive academically and personally.

Learner Online Learning Innovator Scholarship for Veterans
As a current graduate student at the University of Florida, pursuing a Master’s in Education - Student Personnel in Higher Education, I have come to deeply appreciate the role that online platforms and digital tools play in advancing my academic understanding and professional expertise. My career in veteran services, paired with my academic pursuits, has allowed me to integrate various technologies that have not only enhanced my learning but have also shaped my approach to applying knowledge in real-world higher education settings.
One of the key tools that has significantly impacted both my academic and professional life is Salesforce. In my role as a Veterans Specialist at Santa Fe College, I have used Salesforce to manage student records, streamline certification processes, and ensure compliance with VA regulations. By digitizing over 500 veteran student records and automating routine tasks, I improved operational efficiency by 20%. My experience with Salesforce has provided me with practical insights into how digital transformation can enhance the administrative functions of higher education institutions, a topic I explore further in my coursework, especially in areas such as Educational Policy and Technology-Enhanced Learning Environments.
The efficiency brought about by Microsoft 365, particularly Power Automate, has also been essential in my academic journey. In my work, I have reduced manual workloads and minimized processing errors by 30% through automation. By leveraging tools like Excel for data analysis, I can efficiently process large datasets, a skill that proves essential in my coursework on Educational Research. This ability to integrate data management with policy and practice has enabled me to take a more data-driven approach to improving student services.
Another crucial area where digital tools have played a role is in data analysis and reporting. My professional experience has involved managing databases and utilizing data analysis to improve service delivery for over 24,000 military-affiliated students. In my academic work, these skills translate into a deeper understanding of educational research methods and the impact of data-driven decision-making on student success. Salesforce, Microsoft 365, and data analysis tools enable me to bridge the gap between theory and practice. For example, the knowledge I’ve gained in optimizing administrative processes through automation mirrors the focus in higher education on efficiency and student-centered service delivery. Furthermore, these platforms have equipped me with the technical and leadership skills necessary to drive improvements in student engagement, which is particularly important in my role as an advocate for veteran-friendly policies.
In conclusion, the digital tools and platforms I use—Salesforce, Microsoft 365, and data analysis software—have profoundly influenced my academic and professional development. These resources have enhanced my learning and provided me with the practical skills to apply my knowledge in ways that improve service delivery and student outcomes in higher education.
