Wieland Nurse Appreciation Scholarship
I have decided to pursue a career in nursing because of my personal experiences living with Crohn’s disease and the many interactions I’ve had with the healthcare system. From a young age, I’ve had to navigate hospital stays, procedures, and long periods of uncertainty. Through these experiences, I’ve come to realize how deeply impactful nurses can be in a patient’s life — not just through their medical knowledge, but through their kindness, compassion, and presence during vulnerable moments. Nurses have a unique opportunity to bring comfort to people during some of the hardest times in their lives, and I want to be someone who can do that for others.
One of the main things that inspired me to become a nurse was the care I received during some of my most difficult hospital stays. There were nurses who not only made sure I was medically stable, but also took the time to ask how I was feeling emotionally and really listened to my concerns. Their patience, empathy, and support made a lasting impression on me. I saw firsthand how a nurse’s attitude and attention could change the entire experience of being in the hospital. It was through those moments that I realized I wanted to be in their shoes one day — helping people feel seen, supported, and safe.
Living with a chronic illness has also given me a deep sense of empathy and strength that I know will make me a better nurse. I understand what it feels like to be overwhelmed, afraid, and unsure about the future. These experiences have not only shaped me into a more resilient person, but they’ve also given me insight into what patients really need during those tough times: someone who genuinely cares. I want to be the kind of nurse who brings light into someone’s darkest moments — not just by offering excellent care, but by being present and compassionate in every interaction.
I am currently a freshman studying nursing, and receiving this scholarship would help relieve some of the financial pressure that comes with both college and managing a chronic illness. It would allow me to dedicate more time to my studies and clinical training, and bring me closer to my goal of becoming a nurse who truly makes a difference.
I found out about this scholarship through my school’s financial aid office and online research through a website called “Bogo.com”.
