As a Vietnamese immigrant and the first member of my family to pursue higher education, my journey has been shaped by the invaluable lessons instilled in me by my parents. Their guidance has not only defined my character but has also fueled my ambition to pursue a career in medicine. From a young age, my parents nurtured my passion to help others. I vividly recall accompanying them on visits to orphanages, where we would distribute essential supplies and spend time engaging with the children. These experiences left an unforgettable mark on me, teaching me that kindness surpasses wealth and manifests in various forms. While working as a medical assistant, one particular incident stood out: a patient, moved by my compassion during her visit, requested a meeting with my manager to advocate for my recognition and a raise. This unexpected acknowledgment reinforced my belief that kindness should be intrinsic and affirmed my commitment to positively impacting every interaction. Witnessing my parents' unwavering work ethic has been a source of inspiration throughout my life. Despite facing adversity in Vietnam, they seized the opportunity to immigrate to the United States to provide me with access to superior educational opportunities. Their sacrifices, exemplified by my mother's early morning shifts and my father's commitment to night work, serve as a constant reminder of the importance of diligence and perseverance. Recognized among my peers for my tireless dedication, I embrace every opportunity to contribute and learn. While I may be labeled a workaholic, I view my diligence as a testament to my appreciation for the time and energy invested in my youth. Through diverse roles in clinical settings, from front office duties to assisting in surgical procedures, I have sharpened my skills and gained invaluable experience. My willingness to embrace challenges and continuously learn has enabled me to excel in complex tasks, including scribing, managing prior authorizations, and obtaining informed consent for clinical research. Over the past year, I had the privilege of joining the inaugural class of the MSBS program at CHSU. Throughout this experience, I have been fortunate to receive exceptional instruction from dedicated educators and invaluable support from the staff. Despite the program's rigorous nature and the challenge of balancing study commitments with work responsibilities, I have successfully achieved excellent results within the program, which is a solid foundation for me to start my medical school this year. My parents taught me that their most incredible inheritance lies not in material wealth but in the values of kindness and perseverance. Armed with their teachings, I am committed to continuing my efforts in medicine, striving to make meaningful contributions guided by compassion and dedication.
    Mental Health Importance Scholarship
As an aspiring student in the field of healthcare and medicine at California Health Sciences University, I have always been committed to mind-body wellness. I firmly believe that mental health is crucial because it informs every aspect of our lives, from our relationships to our productivity, and our overall wellness. It embodies our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Ignoring it can lead to considerable obstacles and impairments in daily life activities. Therefore, as an individual and a healthcare student, I place the utmost significance on my mental health, understood through my continuous commitment to preserve it. Maintaining a healthy mind has always been a prerogative for me, facilitated through various self-care and resilience practices. Practicing mindfulness and stress management techniques, such as meditating and deep breathing exercises, are integral in my routine. These help anchor me amidst the life challenges encountered as a graduate student entrenched in healthcare studies. Encouraging regular physical activity is also a part of my regimen. This is not only beneficial as a mood booster and stress reliever, but it promotes overall vitality crucial in an academically rigorous environment. I also place great importance on work-life balance. Setting boundaries is especially critical to prevent burnout as a demanding student. I diligently make time for recreational activities that fuel joy and contentment. For an Asian woman like me, crushed in between cultural expectations and academic pressures, keeping such boundaries goes a long way in warding off stress. Interacting with friends and loved ones gives me the required social support and creates a sense of connection and belonging, which are vital for mental well-being in the life of a student. Furthermore, as a responsible healthcare student, I value professional mental health support. Therapy, counseling, or guidance from reliable healthcare providers are some resources I utilize when needed. Such networks and resources play a considerable role in keeping any mental health concerns in check and enhancing resilience. In conclusion, I believe and practice that investing time and resources into mental health is essential for leading a fulfilling life. By putting self-care first, seeking assistance when necessary, and fostering healthy routines and associations, I strive to sustain my mental wellness. As a scholarship recipient and future healthcare professional, I am dedicated to advocating for this approach and empowering others to prioritize mental wellness similarly. The importance of mental health is an integral part of my life creed and remains crucial to my academic journey in healthcare and medicine.
    Priscilla Shireen Luke Scholarship
Giving back to the community is a noble act and a fundamental responsibility that shapes a better world for all. My efforts are primarily directed toward aiding individuals facing medical challenges and supporting underserved communities. These endeavors, although varied, converge on the common goal of fostering positive change and uplifting those in need. As a Volunteer Oncology Navigation Nurse at Orange Coast Memorial Care Medical Center, I am grateful for the valuable insights I gained into various aspects of healthcare. A significant part of my role involved preparing letters for patients' annual lung screenings, where the nurse navigator's emphasis on "prevention is better than cure" truly resonated with me. This goal highlighted the holistic nature of healthcare, emphasizing treatment, disease prevention, and patient education. While my primary task was assisting the nurse navigator, I found fulfillment in supporting the infusion center by transporting patients, serving lunch, and participating in the "Look Good, Feel Better" workshop, which provided wigs, blankets, and stuffed animals to cancer patients. Additionally, my involvement as a Community Service Volunteer at Community Action Partnership allows me to address systemic issues affecting marginalized communities. Even though my contribution was minimal, I assisted in assembling boxes and packing food items, which were later distributed to senior and low-income residents. Furthermore, my role as an Intake/Interviewer/Greeter for OC Volunteer Income Tax Assistance by United Way enables me to support low-income families in navigating the complexities of the tax system. By offering free tax preparation services and financial guidance, I aim to alleviate financial burdens and promote economic stability within the community. Despite my busy schedule with studies, I am committed to actively participating in smaller-scale events at school and within the local community. Whether assisting in packaging airway equipment destined for underserved African regions or volunteering at food drives, I seize every opportunity to make a meaningful difference. These experiences broadened my understanding of global issues and reinforced the importance of collective action in addressing them. Looking ahead, I aspire to expand my contributions and positively impact the world in even greater ways. As I transition into the summer months and beyond, I plan to devote more time and energy to volunteering and advocacy efforts. Whether dedicating additional hours to existing initiatives or exploring new avenues for engagement, I am eager to amplify my impact and effect tangible change. One area of focus for the future is enhancing access to healthcare and patient education in underserved regions. By leveraging my background in medicine, I aim to collaborate with organizations and policymakers to develop sustainable solutions that address disparities in healthcare delivery and patient education opportunities. Whether through volunteer missions, fundraising campaigns, or policy advocacy, I am committed to advancing equity and inclusivity on a global scale. In conclusion, giving back to the community is not just a passion but a lifelong commitment that shapes my identity and purpose. Through my current involvements and future aspirations, I strive to leave a positive imprint on the world and inspire others to join in the journey towards a more compassionate, just, and sustainable future.
