John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
My name is Nhi Tran, I am a proud Deaf and Asian American woman. I grew up attending mainstreamed schools. I graduated from California State University, Northridge in May 2019 with Bachelor of Arts of Child, and Adolescent Development. I am currently a graduate student at Rochester Institute of Technology. I am in the program, Masters in Science of Secondary Education. This program is under National Technical Institute for the Deaf. I started my graduate study in August 2023. I am extremely lucky to have a supportive cohort and professors to work with. I have passion in working with school aged children. Growing up, many teachers have always told me that I have so many potentials in life, and I should strive for what I set my mind to. My goal for my teaching career is to help my students notice their potentials to be able to do anything in their life. Another goal is early language acquisition in American Sign Langue is very important for me because I want my Deaf/Hard of Hearing students to be able to communicate and express themselves in their native language. My other goal is to help my students develop their Deaf identity because they deserve to feel like they belong in a community that they can feel comfortable in the community that they know that they can go to for support throughout their up and down in their life as a Deaf person. Non-academic qualities I will contribute to the learning environment in the program will be forming professional and personal relationships with those I work with and learn from the best. Working in this profession requires forming professional relationship with colleagues, family, and students which also requires an ability that I have is to be able to make people around me feel safe and open with me. I want to be able to do everything I can for my students. I am aware that there is not a lot of teachers who are people of colors (POC). I hope to be another POC teacher that POC students can relate to. I want my students to know that no matter how much challenges they face as Deaf and POC, I’m always here to support them in any way I can. I have a goal in mind when having Deaf students with other special needs. When I become a teacher and get Deaf students with other special needs in my classroom, I will give it my all to get the support they need. I want my classroom to be inclusive for ALL Deaf students. I will also plan curriculum that works for them as well. They deserve the same education just like any of their Deaf peers without other special needs.
    Healing Self and Community Scholarship
I am becoming a Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing students. I will be teaching k-12. My classroom will consist of Deaf/HOH from various background based on their identities, ethnicities, and socioeconomic status. I, myself, am a proud Deaf Asian American woman. I strive to advocate for my students and those who are BIPOC. In the school system, getting mental help can be extremely difficult. When I officially become a teacher of the Deaf, I will actively work with the school psychologists and counselors to ensure that my students can get the support they need. Academic is one of the most important thing in life. However, it won't be efficient if they don't have good mental health support. Learning can be a lot of stress and take a troll mentally and physically. I have work with children for so many years. Over the years, I noticed that they struggle to get support from school counselors/psychologists for mental health. This is more common for those who are Deaf AND BIPOC. Sometimes, they need someone to be their voice to advocate for them. I will be their advocator and teach them how to take care of their mental health.

I goal is to do my student teaching at Washington School for the Deaf, Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind, and California School for the Deaf, Fremont. My goal is to gain more experience as a teacher or intern teacher. I want to learn more strategies that would work for my students. There is high possibility that I will receive a classroom full of students who have different learning levels. It is my job to develop differentiated lesson plans that would work for each of my students. I would like to learn how to develop an Instructional Educational Plan for my students. This will help me keep track to see if they are improving or need more work on the goals that my team has established for them.
