One significant adversity I faced as a woman of color occurred during my high school years when I aspired to pursue a career in the field of computer science. In my predominantly white and male-dominated school, I encountered several challenges and biases that threatened to hinder my progress. One particular obstacle I faced was the lack of representation and encouragement for women of color in STEM fields. I often found myself being one of the few women of color in my computer science classes, which led to feelings of isolation and self-doubt. Additionally, societal stereotypes and biases surrounding women of color in technology further compounded these challenges. To overcome this adversity, I took deliberate steps to empower myself and create opportunities for success. Firstly, I sought out mentorship from successful women of color who had established careers in the computer science industry. Through their guidance and support, I gained valuable insights into navigating the challenges I faced and discovered strategies for success. Furthermore, I actively sought out opportunities to enhance my technical skills and knowledge beyond the confines of the classroom. I participated in coding competitions, attended tech workshops, and engaged in personal projects to showcase my abilities. By actively demonstrating my passion and dedication to the field, I aimed to challenge the stereotypes and biases that had been placed upon me. In addition to personal growth, I recognized the importance of community-building and support. I joined organizations and clubs that focused on promoting diversity in STEM fields, particularly for underrepresented groups like women of color. Through these communities, I found a sense of belonging and a network of like-minded individuals who understood and shared my experiences. Together, we organized events, workshops, and mentoring programs to inspire and support other women of color who aspired to pursue careers in technology. While facing adversity, I also took it upon myself to educate and raise awareness about the importance of diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. I engaged in discussions with classmates and teachers, highlighting the benefits of diverse perspectives and challenging the stereotypes and biases that hindered progress. By advocating for inclusivity and representation, I aimed to create a more welcoming and supportive environment for future generations. Ultimately, my determination and proactive approach paid off. I secured internships at reputable technology companies and received recognition for my achievements in the field. Through my journey, I not only overcame adversity as a woman of color in the computer science domain but also made strides towards breaking down barriers and promoting diversity in STEM. This experience taught me the power of resilience, mentorship, and community support. It reinforced the importance of challenging stereotypes, seeking opportunities for personal growth, and advocating for inclusivity. As a woman of color pursuing a career in computer science, I not only overcame adversity but also became a catalyst for change in my school and beyond, inspiring future generations to believe in their abilities and pursue their passions despite the obstacles they may face.

The value of an education can never be understated, especially when you come from a country and country where women rarely finish middle school. A country that had been blemished by continuous violence negatively affecting every aspect of life. My mother’s family were refugees from a small West African country called Liberia, the time was going through its second civil war in the past 2 decades. Liberia is a country that has been affected by war and economic instability for many years, and poverty is a widespread problem. My mother’s tribe were the victims of the violence becoming scapegoats for the poverty in the country. To make my family proud there was an emphasis on education. My grandmother spent her time in her home country supporting orphans and their education. She advocated for education and made sure all her children were adequately educated. When the immigrated to America there was an underlying message that I shouldn’t waste this opportunity given to me being born in America. I looked at my privilege and the advantages awarded to me that were not awarded to my mother and grandmother. I want to make a change in my community through education. I do this at a local level by tutoring young Liberian kids in subjects ranging from math, english, science, and social studies. I do this for a multitude of kids. At my school, there is an elementary school, and I volunteer as a teacher’s aid. I am helping students with their reading and writing skills. Making connections with the kids I help on a personal level. That they have someone they can rely on that is not an authority figure. I donate my old books to my literary so the books that had a significant on me will have the same major impact on the next generation. I want to do this work in my mother’s country. With the money from the scholarship, I can earn my degree and focus the money on building schools in rural parts of the country. Giving those kids an education they deserve so they could make a difference in their lives. Inspired by my grandmother and her devotion to service young children in times of turmoil. I want to help the generation of kids still affected by the war to grow from the adversity placed on them at birth. To continue the work of helping my community locally or nationally, I strive to help every kid have the opportunity of an education that can change the course of their lives.

The summer of 2019, the summer before I enter high school, the last summer of normality, the last summer I could look at my father with warmth. A father and daughter’s relationship is everlasting, a bond that can not be shaken; a figure that adds stability to the daughter’s life, a comforting presence that is always dependable. That was my relationship with my dad. He was my role model and I always sought him out. I did not live with my dad, but when he visited or called, my world brightened. He was like a perfect figure to me. I idolized the idea of him and I could not see any faults in his character. But that facade started to slowly disappear when I got older. Growing up is a process of realizing people are human and that they can change, no matter how much childhood admiration one has for someone. My father is a Kenyan man who immigrated to America in 2002, seeking a better life for himself. My dad was in my life sparsely, only visiting me when he was not deployed. The times when he would visit me were some of my most fond memories. My dad then married a woman from his high school- my stepmom- who was a sign of a relationship changing. My father has always been a devout Christian and instilled his Christian values in me since I was young. A moment when my dad’s presence became uncomfortable is when after dinner he sat me down and he went on a rant about homosexuality. He went in-depth about how it is homosexual agenda to corrupt young kids. Since I was preparing to enter an all-girls school he noted that it was especially dangerous for me. While this wasn’t his first tirade, this was the first time since I started to discover more about myself and thinking about my own sexuality. When he quoted the Bible about the abomination of homosexuality, I felt like he was talking about me- that I was an abomination and because of who I am, I will disgrace him. That night, I went into my room and cried. All of my negative emotions came to a full head and I truly couldn’t think of him as a comfort anymore. Even when my dad would make me cry, I would still seek his validation. That's the irony of familial relationships- even when the rose-colored glasses are taken off, you just can't erase that nostalgic feeling of the past. I learned an important lesson about balance and realistic expectations. I can hold in my heart the desire for a father's relationship and not let his views define how I feel about myself. You try to justify all their actions even when they actively hurt you or others. In father-daughter relationships, even when the daughter grows up and no longer sees her father as perfect, she still remembers his warm embrace–the way he would call her his baby girl and make her feel like the most important person in the world. That can never go away even when the father causes her distress. Always in the back of her head, a voice keeps telling her “He’s doing it for you.” Because she is her father’s daughter.

I have multiple people in my educational career who have supported me. From my family to adult supervisors who have encouraged me to indulge in my dreams. But the person who has helped a great deal that I don’t show enough gratitude to is my best friend. Having a friend who is willing to go above and beyond to help you achieve your educational goals is a true blessing. I am lucky enough to have such a friend who made a selfless decision that impacted my life greatly. We first met in school in 5th grade when for a brief period of time we were in the same class. We rode the same bus together getting off at the same spot. Though if you ask her she would say she had no recollection of this happening. We didn’t become inseparable until 6th grade when we became friends because of the misconception that I was cheating on her during a test. After that moment we were attached together to the hip always finding a way to spend time together. During our time in school together we did fairly well, every semester always getting on the honor roll. In our last year in middle school, there was an exclusive program application that was given to select students to attend. It was meant to help low-income students of color prepare for high school and college. As many students of color from rough backgrounds are disadvantaged in their education compared to their white counterpart. My best friend was one of those students selected. But she was not able to do so as her tumulus family circumstances made it difficult for her to attend. She graciously gave me her application and now looking back on it years later this changed the trajectory of my life. The program helped me enroll in my current high school and soon-to-be college. Without my best friend, I wouldn’t be given the opportunity. Thanks to her selflessness, I was able to participate in the program and gain valuable skills that helps me excel in high school and college. The program provided me with opportunities to attend college fairs, meet with college representatives, and learn about the college application process. Not only did the program help me academically, but it also gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams and set high goals for myself. It was an invaluable experience that I will always be grateful for, and I wouldn't have had the opportunity to participate in it without my friend's sacrifice. Having a friend who is willing to put your needs before their own is a rare and special thing. My friend's decision to give up her spot in the program so that I could have it was a true act of kindness that I will always cherish. Her selflessness has had a profound impact on my life and has helped me achieve my educational goals. I am forever grateful for her friendship and the example she has set for me.

An unspoken hero in African American history is the activist Audre Lorde. Audre Lorde was a prominent Black feminist, poet, essayist, and civil rights activist. She was born in New York City on February 18, 1934, to Caribbean immigrant parents. Lorde's childhood was marked by racism and discrimination, and she used writing to escape and self-expression. She attended Hunter College and earned a bachelor's degree in library science and a master's degree in literature from Columbia University. Lorde's poetry often addressed themes of race, gender, sexuality, and identity, and she became known for her powerful and moving readings. She published several collections of poetry, including "The First Cities" (1968), "Cables to Rage" (1970), and "The Black Unicorn" (1978).
