I am a high school student and a first-generation college student who is motivated to build a successful future while also giving back to my community. Throughout high school, I have balanced academics, work, and extracurricular activities, which has helped me become more responsible, organized, and independent. I have been involved in Club Rec, where I worked with kids and helped create a positive and supportive environment. This experience taught me patience, leadership, and how to communicate with people of different ages. I also work as a food service worker at Northwestern Medicine, where I have gained real-world experience in a professional setting and developed a stronger interest in the healthcare field. My interest in nursing comes from both my work experience and personal situations that showed me how important it is to care for others. One moment that stood out to me was when my grandma was given the wrong medication, which became a very stressful and emotional time for my family. It made me realize how important it is to have healthcare workers who are careful, compassionate, and truly focused on their patients. Because of this, I want to become a nurse who not only provides medical care but also makes patients and their families feel safe and supported. After high school, I plan to attend college and major in nursing. My goal is to work in a hospital setting where I can make a direct impact on patients’ lives during some of their most important moments. I also plan to continue my education so I can grow in my career and expand my knowledge in the healthcare field. I want to build a long-term career where I am constantly learning and improving. Outside of school and work, I value being involved in my community. Whether it is helping younger kids, supporting my family, or simply being there for others, I believe small actions can make a big difference. Being someone others can depend on is something I take seriously, and it is a quality I will carry with me into my future career. If I could start my own charity, it would focus on supporting families who are dealing with medical challenges. My mission would be to provide emotional support and basic resources so families do not feel alone during difficult times. I would serve families who may not have strong support systems or who are struggling while managing healthcare situations. Volunteers in my charity would help organize care packages, visit patients, and support families in hospitals or at home. They would also help connect people to resources such as food assistance, transportation, and community programs. Overall, my goal would be to create a strong support system that helps people feel cared for both physically and emotionally.

I didn’t always know I wanted to be a nurse, but that changed the night my grandma was given the wrong medication and everything felt uncertain. During Christmas break, what should have been a happy time turned into a very serious situation for my family. We were scared and didn’t know what was going to happen. That night, my entire family came together and prayed for her, hoping she would make it into the new year. Thankfully, she did, but that experience stayed with me. It showed me how important nurses are, not just in giving care, but in making sure patients are safe, heard, and treated correctly. That situation made me realize that I want to be someone who people can trust during their most difficult moments. I want to be a nurse who pays attention to detail, advocates for patients, and makes sure mistakes like that don’t happen. It also showed me how emotional and stressful healthcare can be for families, and I want to be someone who brings comfort and reassurance during those times. Through my career, I hope to achieve more than just a job. I want to build a long-term career where I can grow, continue learning, and possibly advance my education in nursing. I plan to earn my BSN and eventually pursue a higher degree like an MSN so I can expand my opportunities and knowledge. I also hope to work in a hospital environment, specifically somewhere like Northwestern Medicine, where I can be part of a strong healthcare team and make a real impact on patients’ lives every day. Beyond my career goals, I want to be someone who makes a difference in my community. Being a nurse is not just about medical skills, but also about compassion, patience, and understanding. I want to treat every patient with respect, no matter their background, and make sure they feel cared for both physically and emotionally. I also hope to be a role model for others, especially as a first-generation college student, showing that hard work and dedication can open doors. The values and traits exemplified by Cindy J. Visser, such as compassion, dedication, and service to others, are qualities I plan to carry throughout my career. I understand that nursing requires strength, responsibility, and a genuine desire to help people. I am committed to putting patients first, staying focused, and always doing my best to provide safe and effective care. Becoming a nurse is not just something I decided randomly. It comes from real experiences, challenges, and a strong desire to help others in meaningful ways. I know the path will not be easy, but I am ready to put in the work to achieve my goals and make a difference in people’s lives.

The holidays are supposed to be a time of joy, but for my family, Christmas break turned into one of the most terrifying moments of our lives. My grandmother was given the wrong medication, and what should have been a simple mistake quickly became life threatening. Watching her condition worsen and realizing we could lose her is something I will never forget. In a moment that was supposed to be filled with celebration, my family was filled with fear, uncertainty, and helplessness. That experience changed the way I see healthcare. It showed me how critical accuracy, communication, and attention to detail are in every part of patient care. One mistake does not just affect a patient, it affects an entire family. I remember feeling powerless, wishing there was someone who could step in, recognize the error sooner, and protect my grandmother. In that moment, I realized I did not just want to work in healthcare. I wanted to be someone who prevents situations like this from happening and stands up for patients when they cannot do it themselves. Since then, I have taken steps toward building a future in healthcare. Through my studies in medical assisting and central sterile processing, I have learned the importance of responsibility, precision, and patient safety. These experiences have strengthened my understanding that even the smallest details matter. Whether it is preparing instruments or assisting with care, every action plays a role in protecting a patient’s life. This has confirmed that I belong in this field and that I am capable of handling the responsibility that comes with it. As a woman entering the healthcare field, I hope to bring compassion, awareness, and a strong voice for patients. Many patients feel unheard or intimidated, especially during stressful medical situations. I want to be someone who listens carefully, advocates confidently, and treats every patient with dignity and respect. I believe that being both knowledgeable and compassionate can make a meaningful difference in how patients experience care. In the future, I plan to become a nurse and later a legal nurse consultant. I want to combine my clinical knowledge with the legal system to investigate medical errors and ensure accountability. My goal is to help prevent mistakes like the one my grandmother experienced and to support families who are going through similar situations. I want to be part of improving the healthcare system by holding it to higher standards and making patient safety a priority. As a first generation college student, this journey means everything to me. I am not only working toward my own goals, but also setting an example for my family and proving that it is possible to overcome challenges and create a better future. I am determined, motivated, and committed to making a difference. This scholarship would support me in continuing my education and getting one step closer to becoming a healthcare professional who truly makes an impact.

The movie that has had the greatest impact on my life is The Princess and the Frog. To a lot of people, it’s just a Disney movie, but to me, it represents hard work, faith, and staying focused on your goals even when life gets difficult. What stood out to me the most was Tiana’s mindset. She didn’t sit around waiting for opportunities or expect someone else to fix her situation. She worked long hours, stayed disciplined, and made sacrifices to get closer to her dream of owning a restaurant. That really connected to me because I’ve grown up seeing how financial struggles can affect a family. There were times when things weren’t easy, and I saw how much hard work it took just to stay afloat. Because of that, I learned early that if I want something, I have to go after it myself. Watching Tiana reminded me that success doesn’t come from luck—it comes from effort, consistency, and not giving up. I also connected to the fact that her journey wasn’t perfect. She had a clear goal, but things didn’t go as planned. She faced setbacks, unexpected challenges, and moments where she could have given up. That reflects my own life. There have been times where things didn’t work out the way I thought they would, especially when it comes to school, finances, and planning for my future. But instead of quitting, I’ve learned to keep pushing forward and adjust along the way. Tiana’s story showed me that setbacks don’t mean failure—they’re just part of the process. Another important lesson I took from the movie is balance. Tiana was so focused on working that she didn’t always allow herself to enjoy life or accept help from others. That made me realize that while being independent is important, it’s also okay to lean on people and take a break sometimes. You don’t have to carry everything on your own to be strong. This movie also connects to my future goals. I plan to go into nursing, which is a career that requires dedication, patience, and compassion. It’s not an easy path, and there will be long hours and stressful moments. But Tiana’s determination reminds me that staying committed to my goals will be worth it in the end. She kept going even when things got hard, and that’s the same mindset I want to have as I work toward my career. Overall, The Princess and the Frog has had a lasting impact on me because it shows a realistic version of chasing a dream. It’s not always easy, and things won’t always go your way, but with hard work, faith, and persistence, you can still achieve what you set your mind to. That message continues to motivate me as I work toward building a better future for myself.

Education is important to me because it represents opportunity, stability, and the chance to change the direction of my life. Growing up, I did not always have a stable environment. My mom, a single mother of three, worked hard to support us, but there were times when we had to live with grandparents and other family members. Moving from place to place taught me how quickly life can change, and it showed me how important it is to build a future where stability is not something you have to struggle for. Because of this, education is more than just going to school for me—it is my way of creating a better life. As a first-generation college student, earning a degree means breaking a cycle. It means turning challenges into motivation and proving that where you come from does not define where you are going. Education gives me the tools to build a career, support my family, and create opportunities that were not always available to me growing up. I plan to pursue a degree in nursing because I am passionate about helping others. I want to be someone who brings comfort and care to people during difficult moments. Nursing is not just about medical knowledge—it is about compassion, patience, and being there for people when they need it most. My experiences have taught me how to be strong, understanding, and empathetic, and I want to use those qualities to make a difference in the lives of others. The legacy I hope to leave is one of strength, growth, and impact. I want to be the person in my family who changes what is possible. I want my siblings and future generations to grow up seeing that success is achievable, no matter what challenges you face. I want to create a life where stability and opportunity are the norm, not something that has to be fought for. Beyond my family, I want my legacy to be reflected in how I treat others and the difference I make in my community. Through my career in nursing, I hope to leave a lasting impact on the people I care for by making them feel seen, heard, and valued. Sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness can mean the most, and I want to be remembered as someone who always chose to help others. Education is the foundation for everything I hope to become. It is not just about achieving personal success—it is about creating a future that is bigger than myself. My journey has not been easy, but it has given me purpose. I am determined to use my education to build a legacy that reflects resilience, compassion, and the desire to make a difference.

Selected Passage (Proverbs 3:5–6): “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” True strength comes from trusting God, even when life does not make sense. Proverbs 3:5–6 teaches that faith is not about having all the answers, but about choosing to rely on God instead of only depending on ourselves. The deeper meaning of this passage is that we are not meant to control every part of our lives—rather, we are meant to trust that God is guiding us, even when we cannot see where we are going. The verse begins by saying, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” This shows that faith is not meant to be partial or conditional. It is easy to trust when everything is going well, but real faith is shown during difficult and uncertain times. Trusting with “all your heart” means letting go of fear, doubt, and the need to have everything figured out. It requires believing that God has a plan, even when life feels confusing or overwhelming. The next part, “lean not on your own understanding,” challenges the idea that we can figure everything out on our own. As humans, we often rely on what we can see, what we feel, and what we think is best. But our understanding is limited. We do not always see the full picture, and sometimes what we think is right is not what is best for us. This part of the passage reminds us that God’s wisdom is greater than our own, and that trusting Him means accepting that we do not have all the answers. The verse continues, “in all your ways submit to Him,” which means that faith should be present in every part of our lives, not just when we are struggling. It is about including God in our decisions, our goals, and our daily actions. It shows that faith is not just something we believe—it is something we live out. When we truly submit to God, we allow Him to guide our direction instead of trying to control everything ourselves. Finally, the verse says, “He will make your paths straight.” This does not mean that life will be easy or without challenges. Instead, it means that God will guide us in the right direction. Even when we face obstacles, we will not be lost. Our path will have purpose, and our struggles will not be meaningless. God’s guidance gives direction, even in difficult moments. This passage shows that faith is not weakness—it is strength. In a world where people are taught to rely only on themselves, trusting God requires courage. It means choosing faith over fear and believing in something greater than what we can see. It is not about giving up control completely, but about understanding that we are not meant to handle everything alone. To me, this passage is a reminder that I do not have to have everything figured out to move forward. It teaches me to trust God’s plan, even when I do not understand it yet. Life can be unpredictable, but faith gives me confidence that I am being guided in the right direction. Instead of worrying about every step, I can focus on trusting God and continuing to grow. In the end, the deeper meaning of this passage is that a meaningful life is built on faith, not just understanding. When we trust God fully, we allow Him to lead us toward a path that is greater than anything we could plan on our own.

I believe I should be considered for this scholarship because my journey reflects perseverance, faith, and a deep commitment to serving others. I have faced challenges that could have easily held me back, but instead, they shaped me into someone determined to grow, succeed, and make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. Growing up, stability was never guaranteed. I was raised by a single mother of three who worked tirelessly to provide for us, even when it meant we had to rely on extended family for support. There were times we lived with grandparents and other relatives, constantly adjusting to new environments and circumstances. Moving from place to place was not easy, especially as a child trying to find a sense of normalcy. But through it all, my mom never gave up, and watching her strength taught me one of the most important lessons of my life: no matter how hard things get, you keep going. Those experiences forced me to mature early. I learned responsibility, adaptability, and how to remain strong even when things felt uncertain. Instead of allowing those challenges to define me negatively, I chose to let them motivate me. I realized that I wanted more—not just for myself, but for my family. I want to be the one who changes the direction of our future. I want to build a life where stability, security, and opportunity are not things we have to struggle so hard to reach. Academically, I have remained committed to my goals despite the obstacles I have faced. There have been moments where balancing life and school felt overwhelming, but I never allowed myself to give up. I stayed focused because I understand that education is the key to changing my circumstances. As a first-generation college student, pursuing a degree means more than just personal success—it represents breaking a cycle. It means setting an example for my siblings and future generations, showing them that where you come from does not limit where you can go. My passion for helping others has led me to pursue a career in nursing. Nursing is not just a profession to me—it is a calling. I have always been drawn to helping people, especially during their most vulnerable moments. I want to be the person who brings comfort to someone who is scared, who listens when someone feels unheard, and who provides care with compassion and patience. In a world where people often feel overlooked, I want to be someone who makes others feel seen and valued. My personal experiences have already prepared me for this path. Growing up in an environment where I had to navigate uncertainty has given me a deep sense of empathy for others. I understand what it feels like to struggle, to feel overwhelmed, and to need support. Because of that, I know I will bring genuine care into my work as a nurse. I will not just treat patients—I will connect with them, advocate for them, and support them in ways that go beyond medical care. In addition to my personal and academic experiences, my faith has played a major role in shaping who I am. My belief in God has been a source of strength during some of the most difficult times in my life. When things felt uncertain, my faith reminded me that I was never alone and that there was a purpose behind every challenge I faced. It has taught me to remain hopeful, to trust the process, and to continue moving forward even when I cannot see the outcome. My faith also guides how I treat others. I believe that we are called to serve, to love, and to support one another. That belief is what drives my desire to go into nursing and to live a life that reflects compassion and purpose. I do not just want a successful career—I want a meaningful one, where I can make a difference in the lives of others every single day. Beyond my future career, I am committed to giving back to my community and being a positive influence on those around me. I believe that impact is not always about big actions, but about consistency—showing up for people, offering support, and being someone others can depend on. Whether it is through my work, my relationships, or my involvement in my community, I want to leave a lasting impact. This scholarship would not only help ease the financial burden of pursuing my education, but it would also invest in someone who is determined to use every opportunity to give back. I am committed to using my education, my faith, and my life experiences to serve others and create positive change. I carry my past with me not as something that holds me back, but as something that fuels me to move forward. I am not defined by where I started. I am defined by where I am going, and I am determined to build a future that reflects strength, purpose, and service.

Growing up in a single-parent household has played a major role in shaping who I am today. My mom has always been my main source of support and strength. Watching her handle everything on her own taught me what it truly means to be resilient. She worked hard to provide for me and made sure I had what I needed, even during difficult times. Seeing her push through challenges without giving up inspired me to develop that same strength within myself. Because of my upbringing, I learned independence and responsibility at a young age. I understood that I had to stay focused, work hard, and take my future seriously. There were times when balancing school and responsibilities felt overwhelming, but I pushed myself to keep going. I learned how to stay disciplined, manage my time, and not give up when things became difficult. These experiences helped me grow into a stronger and more determined person. One moment that led to a new understanding of myself was when I had to step up and take on more responsibility during a stressful time in my life. I realized that I was stronger than I thought and capable of handling more than I gave myself credit for. Instead of feeling discouraged, I learned to stay calm, focus on what I could control, and keep moving forward. That experience showed me that resilience is not about avoiding challenges, but about facing them and continuing to push through. It also gave me a new understanding of others. I began to realize that many people are going through struggles that are not always visible. This made me more compassionate and understanding toward others. I learned the importance of being patient, supportive, and kind, because you never truly know what someone else is dealing with. These lessons have influenced my goals for the future. I plan to pursue a career in nursing, where I can use my strength and compassion to help others during difficult times. I want to be someone patients can rely on and feel comfortable with, especially when they are at their most vulnerable. My experiences have prepared me to handle challenges with a calm and determined mindset, which I know will be important in the healthcare field. Overall, growing up in a single-parent household has shaped my values, my mindset, and my determination to succeed. It has taught me resilience, independence, and compassion. The challenges I have faced have not held me back—they have made me stronger. I am committed to continuing my education, achieving my goals, and using everything I have learned to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

    VNutrition and Wellness Nursing Scholarship
As a future nurse, I believe I will play an important role in improving people’s nutrition and overall health by not only providing care, but also educating and supporting patients in making better lifestyle choices. Many health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, are closely connected to poor nutrition. Because of this, I want to be a nurse who helps patients understand how their daily habits impact their health and how small changes can make a big difference. One of the main ways I plan to improve people’s nutrition is through education. As a nurse, I will take the time to explain the importance of balanced meals, proper portion sizes, and staying hydrated. I understand that not everyone has the same access to healthy foods or the same level of knowledge about nutrition, so I want to make sure I communicate in a way that is simple, realistic, and easy to follow. Instead of overwhelming patients, I will focus on small, achievable changes, such as adding more fruits and vegetables to meals or reducing processed foods. Another step I plan to take is leading by example. I believe that practicing healthy habits myself will allow me to better encourage others to do the same. Maintaining a balanced lifestyle, staying active, and being mindful of what I eat will help me connect with patients and show them that healthy living is possible. When patients see that their nurse genuinely values health and wellness, they may feel more motivated to make changes in their own lives. I also plan to provide support and encouragement to patients as they work toward healthier habits. Changing eating patterns can be difficult, especially for people who have followed the same routines for years. As a nurse, I want to be patient, understanding, and supportive. I will encourage patients to set realistic goals and remind them that progress takes time. Even small improvements should be recognized and celebrated, because they can lead to long-term success. In addition, I want to help connect patients with resources that can support their nutrition goals. This could include recommending dietitians, providing information about healthy meal options, or sharing resources available in their community. I understand that some patients may face financial or environmental challenges, so I want to help them find options that work for their situation. Finally, I want to focus on prevention, not just treatment. As a nurse, I believe it is important to help patients avoid health problems before they begin. By educating people early about nutrition and healthy habits, I can help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses and improve overall quality of life. Overall, my goal as a nurse is to make a positive impact by promoting healthier lifestyles and helping patients take control of their health. Through education, support, and leading by example, I hope to encourage better eating habits and contribute to a healthier community.

Faith plays a very important role in my life and has helped shape who I am today. Believing in God and Jesus Christ gives me strength, guidance, and a sense of purpose. During difficult times, my faith has always been something I can rely on. It reminds me to stay strong, trust God’s plan, and keep going even when things feel uncertain. No matter what I face, I know I am not alone, and that gives me comfort and confidence. Growing up, I faced challenges that tested me, but my faith helped me stay grounded. It taught me patience, perseverance, and the importance of having hope. When I feel overwhelmed or unsure about the future, I turn to prayer and remind myself that everything happens for a reason. This mindset has helped me stay focused and continue working toward my goals, even when things feel difficult or stressful. My faith has also influenced my academic path. I plan to attend a Catholic university, where I can continue to grow not only academically, but also spiritually. Being in an environment that shares my values will help me stay connected to my faith while pursuing my education. I want to be surrounded by people who encourage both personal growth and strong moral values, so I can continue becoming the best version of myself. In the future, I plan to pursue a career in nursing. My faith plays a big role in this decision because I want to help others, show compassion, and care for people during difficult times. I believe nursing is more than just a career—it is a way to serve others. One time I helped someone in need was when a family member of mine was going through a difficult health situation. They were in a lot of pain and needed help with basic daily tasks. At first, I didn’t realize how much responsibility it would be, but I stepped in to support them in any way I could. I helped with things like making sure they took their medication on time, preparing meals, and assisting them with moving around safely. There were moments when they felt frustrated or discouraged, and I made sure to be there not just physically, but emotionally as well. I would sit with them, talk to them, and try to keep their spirits up. Even small things like keeping them company or making them laugh made a difference. At times, it was challenging balancing this responsibility with my own schoolwork and daily life. However, I knew they needed support, and that motivated me to stay committed. This experience taught me patience and how important it is to be dependable for someone who is going through a hard time. It also showed me that helping someone is not always about doing something big—it’s often the small, consistent actions that matter the most. Through this experience, I also learned how to pay attention to someone’s needs, even when they don’t say them out loud. I became more aware, more understanding, and more compassionate. I realized how important it is to treat people with kindness, especially when they are at their most vulnerable. This moment had a strong impact on me and helped shape my future goals. It confirmed my desire to pursue a career in nursing. I want to be able to care for people not just physically, but emotionally as well. I want to be someone patients can trust and feel comfortable with during difficult times. Helping my family member made me realize that I have the ability to make a difference in someone’s life. It showed me the importance of compassion, patience, and responsibility. That experience is something I will carry with me as I continue my education and work toward becoming a nurse

One situation that stands out to me was when I witnessed a nurse show true compassion to a patient during a routine medical visit. I was accompanying a family member who was feeling extremely anxious about their health. They had been dealing with ongoing symptoms and were worried about what the results might be. It was clear they were overwhelmed, not just physically but emotionally, and they were afraid of what they might hear. During the appointment, the nurse immediately noticed their anxiety. Instead of rushing through the visit, she took a moment to slow down and connect with them. She pulled up a chair, sat at eye level, and spoke in a calm and reassuring tone. She explained each step of the process in simple terms and made sure my family member understood what was happening. She asked open ended questions and gave them time to respond without feeling pressured. Her patience made a big difference. What stood out the most was how she treated them as a person rather than just a patient. She listened carefully, maintained eye contact, and responded with empathy. When my family member expressed fear, the nurse did not dismiss it. Instead, she acknowledged those feelings and reassured them that it was okay to feel nervous. She reminded them that they were there to help and that they would get through the situation together. Even small actions, like her tone of voice and willingness to listen, created a sense of comfort. By the end of the visit, my family member seemed much calmer and more confident. The situation had not changed medically, but emotionally, everything felt different. That experience showed me how powerful compassion can be in healthcare. It is not always about doing something big, but about being present and treating people with kindness and respect. This moment had a lasting impact on me. It made me realize that compassion is a key part of being in the healthcare field. It inspired me to be more mindful in how I treat others and reinforced my desire to pursue a career in nursing. I want to be someone who can provide not only care, but also comfort and understanding. This experience continues to motivate me to make a positive difference in the lives of others. It reminded me that kindness can truly change someone’s experience. This is something I will always carry with me.

Resilience has always been a quality I try to demonstrate, especially when others look to me for guidance. One of the ways I have done this is by encouraging my little sister to pursue higher education. Growing up, I noticed that she sometimes doubted herself and worried about whether college was truly an option for her. I knew I could help by showing her that obstacles and self-doubt don’t have to hold her back, and that persistence and planning can turn her goals into reality. I began by sharing my own experiences, including the challenges I faced in school and the effort I put into achieving my goals. I reminded her that setbacks are normal and that success often comes from working hard, staying organized, and refusing to give up. I helped her set small, achievable goals, like researching colleges, preparing for applications, and exploring programs that matched her interests. Whenever she felt overwhelmed or discouraged, I offered encouragement, reminding her of her strengths and celebrating every step forward. By staying patient and consistent, I showed my sister that determination and resilience can overcome doubt and fear. I also modeled problem-solving and time management skills, showing her how to balance school, extracurricular activities, and responsibilities without losing focus on long-term goals. Over time, she became more confident in her abilities and began taking initiative in preparing for college herself. Seeing her excitement and pride as she explored colleges reminded me how impactful encouragement and example can be. Beyond just giving advice, I encouraged her through action — sitting with her while filling out applications, helping her study for tests, and sharing resources about scholarships and programs. I wanted her to see that I was fully invested in her success and that her goals were achievable with persistence. My resilience in managing my own challenges inspired her to approach hers with the same mindset, and together we celebrated progress, even when it came in small steps. Ultimately, helping my little sister pursue college has shown me that resilience is not just about overcoming personal obstacles, but also about inspiring and empowering others to believe in themselves. By leading through example, offering consistent support, and demonstrating perseverance, I have helped her see that education is possible and that hard work and determination can open doors. This experience reinforced my belief that resilience has the power to not only strengthen oneself but also lift up those around you.

I grew up surrounded by healthcare, with several family members working as CNAs. Watching them provide care, comfort, and support to patients inspired me from a young age. I admired how small acts offering a kind word, helping with daily tasks, or simply listening —could make a person feel seen and valued. From them, I learned the importance of compassion, patience, and dedication, and I knew early on that I wanted to follow a similar path. These experiences shaped my desire to pursue a career in nursing, a field where I can combine empathy, medical knowledge, and hands-on care to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. My personal experiences as a patient have further fueled my commitment to healthcare. While on Medicaid, I sometimes felt I was treated differently, receiving less attention or urgency than the other patients. Waiting longer for care, being brushed off, or having my questions go unanswered was frustrating and disheartening. Experiencing this firsthand made me aware of the challenges many people face in accessing quality healthcare and strengthened my resolve to become a nurse who treats every patient with respect and dignity, regardless of their background or insurance. It also inspired me to use education as a tool to gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to make a real difference in patients’ lives and advocate for those who may feel overlooked or unheard. Pursuing higher education is essential to achieving these goals. By earning my nursing degree, I will gain the advanced training and expertise needed to provide comprehensive care, educate patients, and address disparities in healthcare. Higher education will allow me to grow professionally, take on more responsibility, and open doors to opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach. I am committed to learning as much as I can so that I can serve my community effectively, responsibly, and with always with compassion. Ultimately, I hope to use my degree to give back to my community and improve the quality of care for all patients. I want to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health while providing compassionate and equitable care. I have been surrounded by healthcare for as long as I can remember. Several members of my family worked as CNAs, and I often watched them provide comfort, care, and support to patients who could not care for themselves. It strengthened my desire to become a nurse who treats every patient with respect, compassion, and dignity, regardless of their background or insurance. These experiences also shaped my long-term vision for nursing, motivating me to work toward a system where all patients feel heard, valued, and cared for equally. Beyond providing care, I hope to use my career in nursing to educate and empower patients. Growing up, I was always surrounded by healthcare. Several members of my family worked as CNAs, and I watched them provide care, comfort, and support to people who often couldn’t care for themselves. Seeing their dedication inspired me from a young age. I admired how they could make a patient’s day better, even in small ways, like offering a kind word, helping with daily tasks, or simply listening. From them, I learned that being compassionate, patient, and attentive can make all the difference in someone’s life. Those moments made me realize that nursing is not just a job — it’s a calling, a way to impact people’s lives directly. My desire to become a nurse was also shaped by my own experiences as a patient. While on Medicaid, I sometimes felt I was treated differently, with less attention or urgency compared to other patients. Waiting longer for care, being brushed off, or not having my questions fully answered was frustrating and often discouraging. Experiencing this disparity firsthand made me more aware of the challenges many patients face, especially those with limited resources. It also strengthened my determination to enter nursing — I want to be the kind of nurse who treats every patient with respect, empathy, and the care they deserve, regardless of their background or insurance. These experiences taught me the importance of listening carefully, advocating for patients, and always providing compassionate care, because even small actions can profoundly affect someone’s experience. I also wanted to further my education and take on more responsibility in healthcare. While CNAs play a vital role in patient care, becoming a nurse allows me to contribute in broader ways — administering treatments, educating patients, advocating for their needs, and being a more active part of the healthcare team. Nursing combines hands-on care, medical knowledge, and patient advocacy, and I am drawn to all three aspects. Ultimately, I hope to use my experiences to give back to my community. I want to ensure that everyone, no matter their circumstances, receives compassionate and equitable care. Nursing allows me to honor the example set by my family, address disparities I have personally witnessed, and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Every step I take toward this goal reminds me why I started: a desire to help, to care, and to make healthcare accessible and respectful for all. Through nursing, I can turn the challenges I’ve faced into motivation to improve the experiences of others and create a more compassionate healthcare system.

Financial stability is often talked about in terms of income and savings, but it affects much more than just money. I realized this when I was on Medicare and still did not receive the proper care I needed. That experience showed me how closely finances are connected to health and overall well-being, and how systems that are meant to help people do not always work the way they should. My personal experience with finances and financial education has been limited. Growing up, money was usually discussed only when it came to paying bills or making sure basic needs were met. There were no conversations about saving, budgeting, investing, or planning for the future. I was never taught how credit works or how interest can either help or hurt you over time. Because of this, I felt unprepared when I had to start making financial decisions on my own. Learning about credit scores, loans, and managing expenses felt overwhelming at first, and I realized how many people my age are in the same situation. My experience being on Medicare without receiving proper care further shaped how I view finances. Even though I technically had health coverage, it did not guarantee access to quality or timely treatment. This made me understand that financial systems can limit choices, especially for people who depend on them the most. It also showed me that knowing how systems work can make a difference in how well someone is able to advocate for themselves. Without financial and system knowledge, people can feel stuck or powerless, even when they are trying to do the right thing. As I continue learning about finances, I plan to use this knowledge to build a more stable future. Budgeting skills will help me track my spending, save money, and prepare for emergencies instead of living paycheck to paycheck. Understanding credit will allow me to build a strong credit score, avoid unnecessary debt, and make smarter choices when it comes to major purchases like a car or housing. Financial education will also help me plan for long-term goals, including continuing my education and maintaining financial independence. Overall, gaining financial knowledge will give me confidence and control over my future. It will help me make informed decisions, reduce stress, and avoid common financial mistakes. Most importantly, it will allow me to create a life where I am not limited by a lack of financial understanding, but empowered by it.
