I Can Do Anything Scholarship
My dream self is capable of anything, strives for balance, and has limitless potential.
Colby R. Eggleston and Kyla Lee Entrepreneurship Award
Growing up in an impoverished area has given me a world of perspective. I have seen firsthand the struggles that my community faces. Unemployment, crime, and lack of resources are some of the issues that plague my neighborhood. That's just the tip of the iceberg. You hear about these on social media and see them in movies, yet none of it compares to seeing it in real-time. I won't lie, it can be really discouraging when trying to better the circumstances of the collective. However, I believe that we can make a change and create a better future for ourselves. One way we can do that is by starting our own businesses.
An example of a business that could be started in my community is a small grocery store that focuses on providing fresh and healthy food options. Many people in my neighborhood do not have easy access to nutritious food, and often have to rely on fast food or convenience stores. This can lead to health problems like obesity and diabetes. By opening a grocery store that sources its produce from local farmers and focuses on affordable prices, we can provide a healthier option for our community. This not only benefits individuals' health, but also contributes to the overall well-being of the community.
To develop this business idea, I would first conduct research to assess the feasibility of the idea. This would include researching the demand for healthy food options in my neighborhood, identifying potential suppliers for fresh produce, and determining the necessary startup costs. I would also reach out to local community leaders and organizations to gather support and build partnerships. This could include working with community gardens to source produce, partnering with local schools to offer nutrition education programs, and collaborating with local health clinics to promote healthy eating.
Once I have a solid plan in place, I would seek out funding opportunities to help finance the business. This could include applying for grants or loans from government programs or seeking out investors who are passionate about promoting healthy food options in underserved communities.
Overall, I believe that starting a business in my community can have a positive impact on both individuals and the community as a whole. By providing healthy food options, we can promote better health outcomes and improve quality of life. Additionally, creating job opportunities can help reduce unemployment and poverty in the community. I am excited to take on this challenge and work towards creating a better future for myself and my community.
Healthy Eating Scholarship
As someone who has struggled with unhealthy eating habits in the past, I can attest to the importance of maintaining healthy eating habits. Eating a balanced diet not only has physical benefits but also has a significant impact on mental health.
Ever since I was a kid, I've always had a sweet tooth. I remember there was a point for a least 2 years where I had a bag of Flamin-hots at least once a day. As I grew older I was really unhappy with my body. All of the chips and cakes I had consumed over the years really took a toll on my body. Eventually, I began working out. When I started practicing healthy eating habits, I immediately noticed a difference in my physical health. I felt more energized throughout the day, and I no longer experienced the midday slump that I used to get after eating a heavy lunch. My digestion improved, and I no longer suffered from bloating or stomach discomfort. Furthermore, my immune system strengthened, and I found myself getting sick less often.
However, the changes in my mental health were even more noticeable. I was not always the most mentally healthy. A large part of that was due to what I put in my body. When I ate a balanced diet, I found that I was better able to manage stress and anxiety. I felt more focused and alert, which helped me be more productive and efficient in my work. I also noticed that my mood improved, and I felt happier and more positive overall. On the other hand, when I ate unhealthy foods, I would often feel sluggish, irritable, and anxious.
Maintaining healthy eating habits has also influenced the way I treat myself and others. When I am eating well, I am more likely to prioritize self-care and make time for activities that make me happy and fulfilled. I also find that I have more patience and empathy for others when I am feeling healthy and balanced. On the other hand, when I am not taking care of myself through healthy eating habits, I am more likely to feel burnt out and resentful, which can lead to negative interactions with others.
Overall, practicing healthy eating habits has had a profound impact on my physical and mental health, as well as my relationships with myself and others. It has allowed me to feel more energized, focused, and positive, and has given me the ability to better manage stress and anxiety. By prioritizing healthy eating habits, I am able to take care of myself and show up as my best self for those around me. I believe that everyone can benefit from making small changes to their diet to prioritize healthy eating habits and improve their overall well-being.

I've always had a passion for martial arts. Ever since I was a young child, I was fascinated by the way martial artists moved, the grace and precision of their techniques, and the discipline and mental toughness required to become a skilled practitioner.
As a child, I begged my parents to enroll me in a martial arts class, and finally, they gave in. From my first class, I was hooked. I loved the feeling of pushing my body to new limits, the rush of adrenaline during sparring matches, and the sense of accomplishment that came with mastering a new technique.
Over the years, I've trained in a variety of martial arts, including karate, taekwondo, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Each style has its own unique challenges and rewards, but what they all have in common is a focus on discipline, respect, and perseverance.
As someone who has struggled with depression, I know firsthand how debilitating it can be. Depression isn't just feeling sad or down; it's a persistent and overwhelming feeling of hopelessness, despair, and emptiness that can consume every aspect of your life.
For me, depression often feels like a weight that's pressing down on my chest, making it hard to breathe or move. It's like there's a fog that's descended over my mind, making it hard to concentrate or find joy in anything. Even the simplest tasks, like getting out of bed or taking a shower, can feel like insurmountable challenges.
There have been times when my depression has been so overwhelming that I've felt like there was no way out. I've felt isolated and alone, like no one could possibly understand what I was going through. I've struggled with feelings of guilt and shame, wondering why I couldn't just "snap out of it" and be happy like everyone else.
But over time, I've learned that depression is an illness, just like any other. It's not a weakness or a personal failing, and it's nothing to be ashamed of. With the help of therapy, medication, and a supportive network of family and friends, I've been able to manage my depression and find ways to cope when it feels particularly overwhelming.
There are still days when my depression feels like too much to bear. But I've learned to be gentle with myself and to take things one step at a time. I've learned to reach out for help when I need it, and to surround myself with people who love and support me, even when I don't feel like I deserve it.
I’ve found that returning to martial arts was a pivotal point in my healing journey. Martial arts not only provided me with a physical outlet for my emotions, but it also gave me a renewed sense of purpose and direction in my life. But perhaps the most significant impact that returning to martial arts had on my depression was the sense of personal growth and achievement that it provided. As I progressed in my training, I gained confidence in myself and my abilities.
If you or someone you know is struggling with depression, I would encourage you to consider martial arts training as a potential tool for healing and growth.
Learner Education Women in Mathematics Scholarship
I have always found joy in the endless possibilities and complexities of numbers and formulas. To me, math is like a language that allows me to communicate with the world in a unique way, providing me with a deeper understanding of the patterns and structures that exist all around us.
One of the things that draws me to math is the way it challenges my mind to think logically and systematically. When solving a math problem, I am forced to think critically about every step and decision, which helps me develop my problem-solving skills in other areas of my life. I also enjoy the feeling of satisfaction that comes with finally cracking a particularly difficult problem, as if I've accomplished something truly remarkable.
But more than just being a fun puzzle to solve, math has given me a deeper understanding of the world we live in. By studying the principles of math, I have come to realize that everything in our world is connected, and that patterns and structures exist everywhere we look. From the way a leaf is shaped, to the way a spider's web is woven, to the trajectory of a rocket ship, math helps us understand the underlying principles that govern everything in our universe.
One of the most important lessons that math has taught me is the value of precision and accuracy. In math, every single digit matters, and even the slightest mistake can throw off an entire calculation. This has taught me to be meticulous and careful in everything I do, whether it's writing an essay or conducting an experiment. It has also taught me to value the importance of getting things right, even if it takes a little extra time and effort.
Math has also taught me the importance of abstraction and generalization. By abstracting concepts into symbols and formulas, we can more easily manipulate and understand complex ideas. This has helped me in other areas of my life as well, as I have learned to break down complex problems into smaller, more manageable pieces.
Perhaps most importantly, math has taught me that there is always a solution to every problem, even if it isn't immediately obvious. By breaking down complex problems into simpler parts, we can eventually arrive at a solution that makes sense. This has given me a sense of optimism and resilience, as I know that no matter how difficult a problem may seem at first, there is always a way to work through it.
Ultimately, math has helped me develop my problem-solving skills, and has given me a greater appreciation for the complexity and beauty of our world.

SmartAsset High School SmartStart Personal Finance Scholarship
The best piece of financial advice I have ever received was to live below my means. It sounds simple, but it has had a profound impact on my financial well-being.
When I first heard this advice, I was in high school and didn't have much money to spare. I didn't have a job at the time and was acquiring money largely through my parents and my elders. But as I started my in-home career ( chores ) and my income increased, I realized how easy it was to fall into the trap of lifestyle inflation. I would get paid and immediately start thinking about all the things I could buy or do with the extra money. I have a passion for legos so a lot of my money went toward that.
But living below my means has taught me to be more intentional with my spending. Instead of spending money on things I don't really need or want, I focus on the things that bring me the most joy and value. I prioritize experiences over material possessions and invest in things that will have a lasting impact on my life, such as education or learning new crafts. I recently began learning how to install drywall. My home is pretty old so I'd like to contribute in regard to making renovations.
Living below my means has also helped me build a solid financial foundation. By saving and investing my money wisely, I have been able to build an emergency fund and start saving for long-term goals like getting a car. Of course, living below your means doesn't mean you have to deprive yourself of everything you enjoy. It's about finding a balance between your needs and wants and making conscious choices about how you spend your money.
One of the most important things I've learned about living below my means is that it's not a one-time decision. It's a mindset that requires constant attention and effort. It means being mindful of my spending habits and regularly reassessing my priorities to make sure I'm staying true to my values.
As a soon-to-be college student, living below my means is an essential part of my financial strategy. While it can be tempting to spend money on things I don't really need, I know that making conscious choices about how I spend my money will have a big impact on my financial future.
One of the ways I plan to live below my means is by creating a budget and sticking to it. I will track my expenses and income to ensure that I am not overspending in any category. I will also prioritize my spending to focus on the things that are most important to me, such as education and experiences while cutting back on unnecessary expenses. Another strategy I plan to use is to look for ways to save money on everyday expenses. This might include cooking at home instead of eating out, taking advantage of student discounts, and using public transportation until I have enough money to buy myself a car.
I also plan to be mindful of my debt and use my credit responsibly. I will avoid taking on more debt than I can handle and will make regular payments to ensure that I am not accruing unnecessary interest.
Living below my means is not just a strategy for college, but a lifelong mindset. As I start my career and my income increases, I will continue to prioritize my spending and avoid lifestyle inflation. I will invest in my future by saving for retirement, building an emergency fund, and continuing my education.
Ultimately, to me, living below my means is about finding a balance between my financial goals and my values. By being intentional with my spending and making conscious choices about how I use my money, I can live a fulfilling life while also building a secure financial future.
Overall, living below my means has been the best piece of financial advice I have ever received. It has allowed me to live a more intentional and fulfilling life while also building discipline. Whether you're a college student or are well into your career, I believe this advice can benefit anyone who wants to improve their financial well-being.

“I Matter” Scholarship
One of the most rewarding experiences in life is helping others on their journey toward self-love. There was a time when I helped a close friend through a difficult period in their life, and it was a truly transformative experience for both of us.
My friend Shanel had always struggled with low self-esteem and a negative self-image, and it was clear that it was impacting every aspect of their life. They were constantly seeking validation from others and putting themselves down. I knew that this kind of behavior was not sustainable and that it was time for them to learn to love themselves.
My role in their life was that of a supportive friend who listened and offered guidance when needed. I encouraged them to seek professional help, which they eventually did. Through therapy, they were able to identify the root causes of their low self-esteem and work on developing a more positive self-image.
I also made a point to remind my friend of their strengths and positive qualities. I encouraged them to focus on their accomplishments and to treat themselves with the same kindness and compassion they would offer a friend.
As Shanel began to make progress, I could see a noticeable change in their behavior and attitude. They became more confident and self-assured, and their relationships with others improved as a result. Seeing this transformation was incredibly fulfilling and it taught me the power of kindness and support in someone's journey toward self-love.
Moreover, my experience helping Shanel also impacted me in a positive way. I learned the importance of treating myself with the same kindness and compassion that I offered her. I realized that I was often my own worst critic and that I needed to work on developing a more positive self-image as well.
Helping my friend on their journey towards self-love taught me that kindness and empathy are not only beneficial to others, but also to ourselves. It has made me a kinder, more compassionate person toward others and myself. It has also helped me develop a deeper appreciation for the power of human connection and the impact that we can have on each other's lives.
Helping someone on their journey toward self-love is a truly transformative experience. My role in Shanel's life taught me the importance of kindness and support in someone's journey toward self-acceptance, and how it can ultimately impact both the giver and the receiver in a positive way.

@normandiealise #GenWealth Scholarship
Growing up, I've seen how financial stability can make all the difference in a family's life. It means having the ability to pay for college without taking out loans, afford a down payment on a house, and have a safety net in case of emergencies. However, for many black families, generational wealth is hard to come by due to a long history of systemic racism and inequality in this country. Therefore, it's up to us, the next generation, to break the cycle and create wealth that can be passed down for the generations to come.
Firstly, I plan on educating myself and others within my community. I was always told that knowledge is power. But what I did not know is that financial literacy is crucial in building wealth. Once I get to college, I plan on taking finance courses along with the courses required for my major. By investing in black-owned businesses and supporting local entrepreneurs, we can create a self-sufficient economy within our community. I also plan on starting my own business one day, as entrepreneurship is a proven path to creating wealth.
Finally, I plan on using my financial success to give back to my community. This means investing in education, healthcare, and other vital services that can help uplift the black community. I believe that financial success should not only benefit me but also those around me. By creating a cycle of wealth and generosity, we can ensure that future generations will have access to the resources they need to thrive.
Generational wealth is essential because it means creating a better future for myself and those around me. Through educating myself and others within the black community, investing in black-owned businesses, and giving back, I believe that I can create wealth that will benefit future generations. It won't be easy, but I'm committed to breaking the cycle of poverty and creating a legacy of financial success.

Future Is Female Inc. Scholarship
Intersectional feminism is a term used to describe a feminist approach that acknowledges the interconnectedness of different forms of oppression, including race, gender, class, sexuality, and ability. It recognizes that these identities are not separate but are intersecting and that individuals can experience different forms of discrimination and oppression simultaneously.
For me, intersectional feminism is important because it highlights the fact that the feminist movement must be inclusive of everyone, regardless of their race, sexuality, or socioeconomic status. It recognizes that some women may face multiple forms of oppression and that the fight for gender equality cannot be separated from the fight for racial justice and other forms of social justice.
Authors Bell Hooks and Toni Morrison have been particularly inspiring to me in my understanding of intersectional feminism. Hooks’ writings on the intersectionality of race and gender, and Morrison’s exploration of the complexities of black womanhood, have both helped me to see the world in a more nuanced way. Reading their works has impacted my view of intersectional feminism by helping me to understand that my identity as a black queer woman is complex and multifaceted and that my experiences are shaped by multiple forms of oppression.
I have had to face discrimination and marginalization based on my race, gender, and sexuality, and have had to navigate spaces that were not designed with people like me in mind. This has fueled my desire to contribute to the feminist movement and to work towards a more just and equitable society. In my school, I am contributing to the feminist movement by working to create safe spaces for marginalized groups, including women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people of color. I am also involved in organizing events and discussions around feminist issues, and I am working to bring intersectional feminist perspectives into my classes and extracurricular activities.
As a passionate advocate for feminism, I plan to further the movement by actively working toward equality and equity in all aspects of life. This includes advocating for policies and laws that protect lgbtq+ rights, speaking out against gender-based discrimination and violence, and supporting initiatives that promote women's empowerment and leadership.
I believe that my efforts, along with those of countless other feminists, will have a significant impact on future generations. By fighting for gender equality now, we can create a more just and equitable world for young people to grow up in. We can inspire them to continue the work of feminism and to strive for a future where everyone, regardless of the ways in which they identify, can live their lives to the fullest.

Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship
The death of my grandmother hit me hard. I had never experienced such a loss before, and I didn't know how to cope with it. My grandmother was like a second mother to me. She was always there for me when I needed her, and she never judged me for my mistakes. Losing her felt like losing a part of myself. After she died, I found myself spiraling into a deep depression. I didn't want to do anything or talk to anyone. I just wanted to be alone with my thoughts. I felt like there was a big hole in my heart that nothing could fill. I missed her so much, and I couldn't believe she was gone.
But as time went on, I began to realize that my grandmother's death had taught me a valuable lesson. Life is short, and we should make the most of it while we can. My grandmother had lived a long and fulfilling life, but there were still things she wanted to do and places she wanted to go. She never got the chance to do them because she ran out of time. Her death made me realize that I didn't want to waste my life. I wanted to make a difference in the world and help others. I wanted to spread love and knowledge wherever I went. I wanted to be a better person.
So, I started volunteering at a local charity. I spent my weekends helping out at a soup kitchen, serving meals to the homeless and less fortunate. I also started tutoring kids after school, helping them with their homework, and encouraging them to pursue their dreams. It felt good to be making a difference in their lives, even if it was just a small one. I also started reading more and learning about different cultures and perspectives. My grandmother had always been curious about the world and had a thirst for knowledge. I wanted to carry on that legacy and learn as much as I could. I read books about history, philosophy, and science, and I watched documentaries about different countries and cultures.
As I immersed myself in these new experiences, I felt my depression lifting. I still missed my grandmother, but I knew that she would be proud of me for trying to make a positive impact on the world. Her death had given me a new purpose in life, and I was grateful for it.
I'm at a point now where Im eager for my story to continue. She would've wanted me to live my life to the highest degree possible. There will never be another like her, but I'm grateful for the gift of love she's left to the world. I'm not 100% sure what I'll do with it but, I know it'll be something good.

While many may assume that growing up in a black community would be a positive experience, it can actually be quite complex. On one hand, there is a strong sense of community and culture that is celebrated and embraced. However, there is also the pressure to conform to certain stereotypes and expectations that can be limiting and harmful.
For me, attending an HBCU is a way to celebrate my culture and connect with others who share similar experiences and struggles. It's a way to escape the pressures and expectations of the outside world and find a sense of belonging and empowerment. Furthermore, attending an HBCU provides a unique educational experience that focuses on the history and contributions of black people to society. It's an opportunity to learn from professors and peers who understand the nuances and complexities of the black experience, and who are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
In the face of ongoing racial injustice and discrimination in our society, attending an HBCU is also a way to take a stand and fight for equity and justice. It's a way to support institutions that have been instrumental in promoting social and political change throughout history.
Overall, my decision to attend an HBCU is rooted in my desire to celebrate my culture, connect with others who share similar experiences and fight for equity and justice in our society. I believe that attending an HBCU will provide me with the tools and support I need to thrive academically and personally, and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.

As a high school student, I have faced many setbacks, but one, in particular, stands out as a major challenge. It was during my junior year when I received a diagnosis of cystic fibrosis that would significantly impact my daily life and ability to participate in school activities.
At first, I was devastated. I felt like my life was over and that I would never be able to achieve my goals or enjoy my high school experience. It was a difficult time for me emotionally, and I struggled to cope with the changes that were happening in my life. However, I knew that I couldn't give up. I had to find a way to overcome this setback and continue working towards my goals. So, I began researching my condition and speaking with medical professionals to find ways to manage my symptoms and maintain my health.
In addition to taking care of my physical health, I also made a point to stay engaged in school activities and maintain my academic performance. I reached out to my teachers and guidance counselor for support, and they were incredibly helpful in providing me with accommodations and resources to help me succeed. I also found support from my friends and family, who were always there to listen and offer encouragement. They helped me stay positive and motivated, even during the toughest times. Over time, I learned to adapt to my new circumstances and find ways to make the most of my high school experience. I joined clubs and activities that I was passionate about, and I found new ways to pursue my interests and hobbies.
Looking back on this experience, I realize that it taught me a lot about resilience and perseverance. It showed me that even in the face of major setbacks and challenges, it's possible to keep moving forward and achieving your goals. I also learned the importance of seeking help and support from others, whether that means medical professionals, teachers, or loved ones.
In terms of sharing my knowledge and experience, I plan to be an advocate for others who may be going through similar challenges. I want to raise awareness about cystic fibrosis and the impact it can have on young people, and I want to offer support and resources to those who may be struggling. I hope that by sharing my story, I can inspire others to keep pushing forward and pursuing their dreams, no matter what challenges they may face along the way.

Every day I live my life as a queer black woman with autism. My lived experience has been one of constantly navigating multiple marginalized identities and the challenges that come with them. However, I have also been able to use my experiences and personal advocacy to contribute to positive change for myself and others in similar situations.
Growing up, I often felt like I didn't quite fit in with my peers. I struggled with social interactions and sensory processing issues, which made it difficult for me to make friends and participate in activities that my neurotypical peers enjoyed. I also felt like I was constantly navigating the intersections of my blackness and queerness, which often left me feeling isolated and misunderstood. However, as I got older and began to understand my identity more fully, I also became more comfortable advocating for myself and others like me. I started attending events and meetings for queer people of color and individuals with disabilities, where I could connect with others who shared similar experiences.
Through these connections, I began to see the ways in which systemic oppression affected not only myself but also other marginalized individuals. I realized that my experiences with discrimination and exclusion were not unique and that there were larger systems at play that needed to be addressed. So, I began to use my personal experiences and my platform as an advocate to push for change. I became involved in local activism, working with community organizations to provide support and resources to other marginalized individuals.
One of the key areas where I have focused my advocacy is education. As someone with autism, I know firsthand how important it is for schools to provide support and accommodations for students with disabilities. I have worked with my school and educators to help them better understand the needs of neurodivergent students and to advocate for more inclusive and accessible education policies. Through my personal advocacy and lived experience, I have been able to contribute to positive change not only for myself but also for other marginalized individuals. I have seen the impact of my work on the lives of those around me, as they are able to access resources and support that they may not have had access to before.
Ultimately, my experiences have taught me the importance of advocacy and using our voices to make a change. While our experiences may be unique, we are stronger when we come together to advocate for ourselves and others like us. And as we continue to push for change, we can create a world that is more inclusive, more just, and more welcoming to all.

Elijah's Helping Hand Scholarship Award
As a queer person, my journey to self-acceptance has been a rocky one. Growing up in a conservative family, I was taught that being gay was wrong and sinful. This belief system was reinforced by the society around me, which often treated LGBTQIA people as outcasts or deviants. As a result, I spent many years struggling with my identity and feeling like I didn't belong. The impact of these experiences on my mental health cannot be overstated. I battled anxiety and depression as I tried to reconcile my feelings with the messages I received from my family and community. I felt isolated and alone, as though no one could understand what I was going through. My self-esteem suffered, and I often found myself questioning my worth as a person.
However, over time, I began to find solace in a community of other queer people. These were individuals who had faced many of the same challenges I had, and who could offer me support and empathy. Through this community, I was able to find a sense of belonging and acceptance that I had never experienced before. One of the most important things I learned from this community was the power of self-love. I came to understand that my worth was not determined by the opinions of others, but by my own sense of self-worth. I began to prioritize my mental health by engaging in activities that brought me joy and relaxation, such as reading and meditation. I also sought out therapy to help me process my experiences and work through any residual trauma.
As I immersed myself in this community of other queer people and embraced self-love, I found that my mental health began to improve. I felt a sense of peace and acceptance that had eluded me for so long. I was able to let go of the shame and self-doubt that had weighed me down, and embrace my identity with pride and confidence. I've never felt more like myself. As a queer person, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate a society that often doesn't accept or understand us. However, by immersing ourselves in a community of other queer people and practicing self-love, we can overcome these obstacles and thrive. By embracing our identities and surrounding ourselves with love and acceptance, we can find the strength and resilience we need to navigate life's challenges. I live in hopes that one day I can touch others the way that the community's love has touched me.

As someone who struggles with bipolar disorder, achieving mental peace has been a long and arduous journey for me. There was a time in my life when I hit rock bottom and realized that I needed to make some significant changes in order to overcome my struggles.
The first step I took towards achieving mental peace was seeking therapy. I had always been hesitant to share my thoughts and feelings with others, but I recognized that I could not continue to suffer in silence. Through therapy, I learned a variety of techniques to manage my mood disorder, including mindfulness meditation, deep breathing, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. My therapist helped me to identify the negative thought patterns that were contributing to my mental state and taught me how to reframe them in a more positive and realistic way. This would also help me gain something of a routine.
Another strategy I employed was making lifestyle changes. I started practicing yoga and going for walks in nature, which helped me feel more grounded and centered. I also made a conscious effort to eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep, and take the time to pay attention to myself, which I found exacerbated my bipolar disorder. I feel much more connected to my body and my sense rof self I feel is more secure.
One of the most important skills I learned was how to challenge my negative thoughts. I realized that I was often fueled by my own negative self-talk and catastrophic thinking. This would often lead to me spiraling. I worked on identifying these thoughts and questioning their validity. For example, if I found myself thinking "I'm never going to be able to handle this situation," I would ask myself, "Is that really true? Have I ever handled a similar situation before?" This helped me to reframe my thoughts in a more positive and realistic way.
Finally, I found it helpful to practice gratitude. I started keeping a gratitude journal, where I would write down three things I was grateful for each day. This helped me to shift my focus from the negative aspects of my life to the positive ones, and to cultivate a sense of appreciation for what I did have.
Achieving mental peace is not an easy feat, and there were many times when I wanted to give up. However, I realized that the only way to overcome my struggles was to keep pushing forward and trying new strategies. I learned that with the right mindset and support, anyone can achieve mental peace.

Volunteering for underprivileged children has been a transformative experience for me in many ways. Firstly, it has helped me to develop a greater sense of empathy and compassion toward others. When working with children, I have found myself becoming more patient and understanding, and I have learned to appreciate the small joys in life. I used to be a very impatient person. It was the little things that would get to me. I found myself being very insecure as well. Through my interactions with children from different backgrounds, I have developed a more open-minded approach to life, and I have come to understand the importance of diversity and inclusivity. It's helped greatly in relinquishing thoughts of shame or insecurity because well, children have little to none. I realized that all of these things were taught to me. Being around them has reminded me of the child I once was and has set me on a path to regain my sense of wonder.
Moreover, volunteering has made me more aware of the social issues that many children and families face. I come from a predominantly black community so, being around children that come from different backgrounds has opened my worldview a lot. I see the beauty in so many different cultures because of the opportunities that come with helping others. This has prompted me to become more involved in community service projects. In doing so, I have been able to give back to my community and make a positive difference in the lives of those around me. Through volunteering, I have also gained valuable skills such as leadership, communication, and problem-solving, which have helped me to develop as a person.
However, despite the many rewards that come with volunteering, it can also be financially challenging, particularly for students like myself who have limited resources. As a result, I am applying to this scholarship to help support my continued involvement in community service projects. With this scholarship, I will be able to focus more on volunteering and less on the financial strain that it can sometimes create. Eventually, I'm going to go to college and my time will be mostly dedicated to my studies. After college, I plan to get a good job in the aerospace field. They make a sizeable amount of money so, it will enable me to donate to organizations that support children and families in need, participate in more community service projects, and further develop my skills as a volunteer. Thank you for considering me!

One person who has had a significant impact on my educational journey is my third-grade teacher, Ms. DuBois. Ms. Dubois was a fantastic teacher, mentor, and role model. She made learning fun and engaging, and she went above and beyond to help me overcome any obstacles I faced in school. Her encouragement and guidance gave me the confidence to succeed academically and personally. Ms. DuBois taught me the importance of education and the value of hard work. She emphasized the importance of reading and encouraged me to explore different subjects and topics. She also recognized my strengths and encouraged me to pursue my passions. Her support helped me develop a love for learning that has stayed with me throughout my academic journey.
Looking back on my educational journey, I realize how fortunate I was to have Ms. DuBois as my teacher. She had a profound impact on my life, and I want to give back to my community in a similar way. I plan to become a teacher after I gain experience as an aerospace engineer. I want to inspire future generations of students to pursue their dreams and achieve their full potential. Education is a powerful tool that can transform lives and communities. By becoming a teacher, I hope to make a positive impact on my community by helping students reach their academic and personal goals. I want to create a learning environment that is inclusive and welcoming to all students, regardless of their background or abilities.
In addition to teaching, I plan to give back to my community in other ways. I hope to volunteer at local schools and community organizations to support students and families in need. I also plan to participate in community service projects and help promote educational initiatives that benefit children and families. The community I come from is pretty poor so the fact that Ms. DuBois made it which I didn't even realize until years later says a lot. It took a long time for me to be burdened with the knowledge of poverty so I plan to be able to provide that level of shielding for the children I teach in the future.
My experience with Ms. DuBois taught me that one person can make a difference in a child's life. I want to be that person for future generations of students. I want to inspire, guide, and mentor students to help them reach their full potential and achieve their goals. I am grateful for the impact Ms. Dubois had on my life, and I hope to pay it forward by making a positive impact on the lives of others.
Minority Students x Stem Scholarship
I'd say its been a plethora of things that's influenced me to dive deeper into the STEM field. When I was a small child I remember this show called Leverage. I'd watch it all the time. I remember wanting to be like my favorite character, Hardison. He was a hacker in a group of thieves. He was always one of my characters. Not only was he hilarious, but he was the only character of color in the group. His inventions were terrific and he had access to almost everything in the world. My desire to go into the tech field started there with him.
Fast forward to 2016. Im 11 and the TV series " The Magicians " comes out. While it is about magic, the show manages to incorporate science into the mix. There was this one episode during their third season that hit really hard for me. One of the show's protagonists betrayed their friends using a device that would change the flow of magic. The device was called a siphon. It inspired me to one day make a device that can absorb energy the way it does and direct it into a controlled area to be put to use. In my brain, this device would be able to be safe enough that it's put on the market and given to the people. I feel as though it would reduce a lot of pollution if it goes according to plan and the world would overall be healthier.
If it was up to me then I'd try my best to give more opportunities to people in low-income areas. I think it would be a good idea to hold competitions every year for children and adults in areas like this. These competitions would provide supplies to the people of these communities to build things with. In the end, the winner(s) would win full rides to schools or job opportunities. I feel as though that would make a serious change and promote creativity among these communities.
I think that if the tech industry can help all consumers then, why not? I personally am not in the business of being overly exclusive. I have an understanding that people need each other to really get somewhere in life. Not only that but, being inclusive is profitable. I'd like to think the tech industry would want all of the press it can get, that way more people will want to join. I think there is a serious future in tech but there is no future if there is no people. The more the merrier in my opinion. Hopefully one of these days I get to a point where I have the resources to help others and expand the industry.
PAC: Diversity Matters Scholarship
The world around me has changed rapidly in the last few years. I've always had many interests. I love to read, I frequently fall into wormholes learning everything I can about the characters in the stories I read. But now I have my own stories to create. The more I've looked into my identity and its intersections, the more questions I have.
As a small child, I can remember watching shows like Greys Anatomy and House. I always wanted to be like Dr. Christina Yang. My mother once told me a story that really put my character into perspective. She said that one Labor Day, I ran downstairs in a panic out of nowhere. I told her we had to get to the hospital ASAP to help the women have their babies. This situation was a clear indicator of where my future in medicine could go.
At 14 I became really interested in black history. My science teacher, Mr. Smith, would always bring our lessons back to the world around us. He made sure we knew that, because of the way we look, people would try their hardest to keep us down. At 15, I was introduced to the concept of feminism. When I was younger I took an interest in math and science, I noticed a lot of the girls around me excelled in those subjects. So when I learned that women were an oppressed group and had to fight to get jobs in fields like STEM, it threw me for a loop.
When I was 16, I met my English teacher, Ms. Smith, and she helped me open my eyes. Because of the care she’s shown me, I've furthered my research. I now understand that my life experience as a woman is very different from a lot of other women. Operating under the systems of oppression in this country has tailored my experience of womanhood severely. Being black meant that my emotions were too loud and invalid. The standards for my femininity were set for me and were unattainable. Validity wasn't something I had the authority to give to myself. It had to be earned and could be taken away at a moment’s notice. My humanity was conditional and it was up to me to change that narrative.
Since learning about things like medical racism and misogynoir, Ive made it a goal of mine to divert much of this. I understand that I wont reach everyone. But, I can most certainly try. My intersecting identities as a black gay woman will heavily impact the way I approach my work. Under my care, I intend to make my patients feel safe and help provide hope. If things go to plan then I'll be providing a bit of sunshine in my profession.

I think one of my more prominent unique attributes is the way I think. Ever since I was a child I found myself being the oddball out. I've always had many interests. I love to read, I frequently fall into wormholes learning everything I can about the characters in the stories I read. But now I have my own stories to create. The more I've looked into my identity and its intersections, the more questions I have.
I was 12 when I began inquiring about my own existence. The questions and ideas were endless. This led me to collaborate with anyone who cared to listen. Bouncing ideas off of other people and being introspective has certainly changed how I interact with others. I’d say now I can be more understanding when people decide they want to be vulnerable with me. The world is not black and white, having the perspective of the many different shades of gray makes me appreciate life much more and what it has to offer me.
At 14 I became really interested in black history. My science teacher, Mr. Smith, would always bring our lessons back to the world around us. He made sure we knew that, because of the way we look, people would try their hardest to keep us down. That sparked something in me. In time, I learned my history spans farther than the 400 years of slavery in this country. Eventually, I came to the conclusion that being black, while it sometimes can be a hindrance, is one of the best things I can be. It’s more than just an identity, it’s an experience. An experience that continues to affect the world beyond me. In learning my history I have realized that while being black is a part of me, it is not all that I am, but it will follow me for as long as I live.
Currently, at 18, I'm utilizing all of my resources. I have many teachers in my life. My main focus has been trying to learn more about myself and what I want. I know for sure that whatever happens, I will prevail. Truthfully, my best teacher right now has been life itself. The human experience, while common, is unique indeed. Life is always changing and teaching me something new. I'm always going to be a lifelong learner. In my mind, growth is limitless. I live in hopes that wherever my life takes me, I never lose the audaciousness it takes to inquire.
In regards to my community, I want to start community organizations. It would be amazing to periodically clean up and plant flowers where I live. I think having assemblies about emotional intelligence at the respective schools in my community would effective as well. Eventually, Im going to leave this place and travel the world. I plan to bring everything I learn back to where I grew up in hopes that it changes things for the better.

Growing up I've always had varying interests. Makeup, gardening, cooking, chemistry, and even espionage at one point. The only issue with this was the fact that I didn't have much nurturing for my academic desires. During my freshman year of high school, I made a new friend who was really into all things STEM-aligned. At the time I wanted to be a hacker for the CIA, I was very idealistic and watched a lot of spy movies. He entertained the idea with me which further pushed my drive to live out the
dream I had at the time. All year I had been learning binary code and learning how to code on Khan
Academy. It got to the point where we'd sometimes communicate in binary code. Fast forward a
year and now I'm a sophomore in high school. My interests have changed drastically.
By this time I had been feeling really dry in regard to my aspirations. I needed something stimulating to keep my attention. I start doing research on things that will keep me occupied and I came across the aviation field. I found it interesting because of it's complexities. The interest I have in the aerospace field comes from my love of challenges. I know it's going to be difficult but I have a lot of faith in myself. On top of that, spaceships are really cool. It may sound childish but I have a genuine interest in all things fantasy and sci-fi. So getting to be part of that story is somewhat about living out my childhood dreams. To add to that, I love the idea of exploring space. I'd consider myself a serious Rick and Morty fan. While they are terrible people, the multidimensional exploration in the show is really cool. If I got to see the things they've seen I don't even know what I'd do with myself.
In regard to my community, I spend a lot of my time interacting with the kids here. I've always found myself being a good influence on the people I'm around. At my school, I participate in a group called Peer Mediation. The school I go to is a troubled one, to say the least. Because of this, Peer Mediation operates as something like therapy for the students. We call them into our offices and we talk to them in order to de-escalate issues before they get physical. Last year there was a child we couldn't get to and he died so I'd like to avoid that with the time I have left there.
After I get my degree Im going to get a good job that pays the bills and hopefully get another degree. I'd like to do research on space exploration eventually but I need the funds first. Im going to do something great and I cant wait to start. Thank you!

Recently I wrote a paper that discussed black men's transition from slavery to modern times. The paper surrounded narratives around their varying characters and how it's impacted their ability as a collective to create and maintain intimate connections. In writing the paper I came to realize just how important it is to have good representation. A lot of the men I know, they believe that they are incapable of having healthy relationships with people. I've concluded that this Is due to the harmful narratives about these men's personhood. Many of them have internalized these messages and the negative effects are seen in their day-to-day lives.
The school I attend you could say is a troubled one. The kids fight all the time. Most of the people there treat each other so badly and the adults do nothing to stop it. My junior year of high school was one of the worst pertaining to the school's environment. There was a fight almost every day. While this sounds very out of the way, a child died last year due to all of the fighting. In regards to representation, the last video of him seen was of him getting jumped on the school grounds. Later that day he was caught in a drive-by shooting. He died at the hospital that same day. What's worse is things kind of just went back to normal as if nothing happened. The principal of the school just barely acknowledged his death.
The summer after this happened I found myself taking a college course at a local community college. I remember telling the class where I went to school and the reaction I got was very telling, to say the least. Out of all of the schools in my district, mine is known as the bad one. The kids already have a bad reputation because of where we live. Most people expect us to either end up pregnant before 18 or dead before 25. Due to this, my drive to change things feels almost unstoppable.
This is why I believe representation is so important. Especially when it comes to people who look like me. I think if more diverse voices were in places of power then the collective would be more empathetic. I feel as though because many of the popular voices of today are largely hegemonic, it hinders our world view as a society. I'd like to live in a world where "choice" is more than an idea. I need it to be attainable. Once that goal is reached then I think we'll all be better off. Nobody would get to tell me or anyone else who they are and what boxes they fit into. My story would genuinely be my own and I plan to be the one to tell it.

As a child, I used to be afraid of the dark. My brain would take me on stories to numerous places. You could say I was a child full of whimsy if you will. But sometimes, I didn't find myself in safe spaces. I'd often worry that figures like Freddy Krueger or some horrible monster I made up would be waiting for me once I turned my lights off. I used to share a room with my siblings. It helped me feel safe for a while. They'd watch over me and I felt protected. Eventually, they got older and went off to college. I was left to fend for myself against the monsters living in my home's shadows. I can recall a few times when I ran to my mother for help. She never believed there were monsters in my room, 8 year old me knew better.
So for a while, I'd dread the nights when they came. I wasn't allowed to sleep with my TV on because of school. That never stopped me from turning it on. On top of that, I was instructed to keep my door open when I slept. The hallway between my parent's room and mine was absolutely mortifying. Not only was it pitch black, but there was also a closet in the hallway between our rooms. It never stayed closed for some reason. It always creaked and would open spontaneously. Imagine trying to sleep with that taunting you. Eventually, I was moved into my own room. For the first time, I was really by myself. My room got really dark at night. I didn't have a TV then, so I'd use nightlights as a light source. There was one time I didn't have a night light. But, I had a candle and a bottle of water. Luckily the bottle was clear and crisp. I set the bottle up in a way that would absorb and reflect the light from the candle. My room was lit and the next day I got a nightlight.
I find that America's infrastructure isn't the best. I come from a low income neighborhood and the power frequently goes out. I'd like to develop technology that absorbs sunlight on mundane items like kitchen utensils, doors, banisters, etc. Maybe create a machine that collects the light energy at the end of the day. That way we decrease pollution ( hopefully ) and now energy is accessible to almost everyone. If I had the money I'd invest in the research and then patent the technology. I'd get it built, test it, and eventually I'd get it out to low income neighborhoods. If it works and I make a decent amount of money from it then I'd likely start investing in communities like mine. There's a lot of open space here I'd like to utilize.
