The movie that has had the biggest impact on my life would have to be the 2014 academy award-winning classic, Whiplash by Damien Chazelle. Whiplash follows the young, ambitious, Andrew Neiman (played by one of my favorite actors, Miles Teller) who is committed to giving everything to his passion, and willing to sacrifice anything for his goal of becoming the absolute best jazz drummer he can be. His talent gets him into the best jazz music school in the country, which leads to the main conflict of the movie, Andrew's relationship with his teacher at this school, Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons). Fletcher pushes his students way harder than human beings can withstand, committed to unlocking their greatest potential. Andrew is pushed harder than he ever has been and pushes everyone out of his life including family and girlfriends. So how does the movie apply to me? Why does it have such a tremendous impact on me every time I watch it? Well, we have things we've worked hard for, we have all had things that we have been devoted to. But to give 100% that's rare, that's what separates people from just a hobby and from having success. I think my enjoyment and love for this movie come from the jealousy I have for Neiman. I'm jealous of the amount of love he has for his passion, no matter how much pain he has to go through no matter how much he has to sacrifice nothing takes him away from his passion. It's amazing. Neiman has that Kobe Bryant drive, the kinda drive that makes you commit, that makes you disregard all reason or logic and only come out on top, the kinda motivation where winning is the only option. I think part of what makes this movie so amazing is Neiman's relationship with Fletcher, his teacher, and his maestro. He's such a toxic man, in the movie pushing one of his students to commit suicide. But is that what it takes? Is every amazing person who has great success only as good as their teacher? That seems harder to do, it seems harder to find someone to truly take you to that next step. I don't know how Andrew Neiman does it, all I know is I wish it was me. I don't know how to care that much, to love something that much, I hope to find it one day. I hope to find my whiplash.
