Hello there! My name is Nelly and I am currently a junior at Boswell high school. I enjoy Science, reading, baking and wrestling. I want to attend college to become a plant geneticist! Through my education and career I hope to make food crops more available to those in less fortunate communities and countries. With that I hope to inspire POC and women to participate in STEM based careers.

Vegan Teens Are The Future Scholarship
Veganism is not merely a passing trend or a fashionable choice adopted by influencers to enhance their personal image or lifestyle. Rather, it is a deeply rooted ethical commitment and a conscious way of living that significantly benefits both human health and the well-being of animals. Embracing veganism is about more than just avoiding animal products; it is a reflection of the desire to create a kinder, more sustainable world where the exploitation of animals for food, clothing, and other uses is minimized or eliminated entirely. By choosing a vegan lifestyle, we contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment, reduce the demand for animal agriculture, and take a stand against cruelty towards animals. For me, this commitment began after learning some hard truths about the food industry, which motivated me to make a change that I believe can have far-reaching impacts.
I became a vegan after discovering a shocking statistic that forever altered my perspective. In 2022 alone, over thirty million cows were slaughtered for meat in the United States. These animals are not just numbers in a report; they are living organisms with the capacity to feel pain, fear, and suffering. The conditions in which most of these animals are raised and eventually slaughtered are often appalling. Cows, chickens, and other farm animals are frequently kept in environments that are cramped, uncomfortable, and unsafe. For dairy cows and chickens, which are often seen as a resources for milk and eggs, the situation is not much better. These animals endure constant suffering throughout their lives, often being confined to small spaces, deprived of natural behaviors, and subjected to cruel treatment.
My decision to become vegan is driven by the desire to advocate for better treatment of animals and to help lower the demand for animal products, which in turn reduces the number of animals slaughtered for food. While individual choices may seem small, collectively, they can lead to meaningful changes in industries that rely on animal exploitation. The fewer people who consume meat, dairy, and other animal products, the less pressure there is on industries to breed and kill animals to meet consumer demand.
However, veganism is not just about eliminating animal products from our diets. It also opens the door to reimagining the way we approach food production altogether. One of the major issues we face globally is access to nutritious, affordable food, especially in regions where resources are scarce. I want to use my passion for veganism and plant-based living to address this problem by focusing on the potential of plant genetics. By improving the quality and yield of food crops, we can make plant-based foods more readily available and nutritionally complete, providing healthier options for those who may otherwise struggle to access balanced diets. The aim is to create crops that are not only more resistant to disease and environmental stressors but also more affordable and widely available to people in need.
This commitment to improving plant-based food systems ties into the broader idea of sustainable living. Animal agriculture is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and water consumption. By shifting towards plant-based diets and enhancing the quality of plant-based foods, we can reduce the environmental impact of our food systems.
In conclusion, veganism offers a pathway to living in alignment with values of compassion, sustainability, and health. For me, it represents a commitment to making a difference not only for the animals who suffer in industrial agriculture but also for the planet and the people who live on it.
Stacey Vore Wrestling Scholarship
Growing up, I struggled to form genuine friendships. When I was younger, I would find myself constantly shifting from one friend group to another. Each transition left me feeling unsettled and unsure. Some friends were too harsh, causing me to feel anxious and hesitant to speak up, while others were overly dependent, leaving me with little room to interact with new people. It felt as though I was constantly searching for a place where I truly belonged, but I never quite found it.
Everything began to change when I entered high school and joined the wrestling team. Stepping onto the mat for the first time marked a turning point in my life. The wrestling mat became more than just a physical space, it became a sanctuary where I felt a genuine sense of belonging. Here, I met a community of people who, regardless of win or lose , stood by each other with constant support. This newfound support system was unlike any I had experienced before, offering encouragement and compassion in equal measure.
As the wrestling season progressed, so did my skills. My performance improved steadily, and I found myself positioned between the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. By junior year I became girls captain. These achievements was more significant than I anticipated, it provided me with the boost of confidence I desperately needed. The progress I made on the mat was not only about my physical abilities but also about my growing self-assurance. Each practice, each match, contributed to a gradual but eventually profound transformation in my character.
With each passing day, my stance became more confident, my voice grew louder, and I began to develop a clearer sense of self. The sport demanded not only physical strength but also mental fortitude, teaching me valuable lessons about dedication, discipline, and perseverance. These lessons extended beyond the wrestling mat and began to influence other aspects of my life. I became more focused, more committed to my goals.
Wrestling's influence on my personal development was profound. The sport required a level of dedication and discipline that I had never experienced before. Practices were rigorous, pushing me to my limits and demanding that I continually strive for improvement. This dedication translated into other areas of my life, fostering a stronger work ethic and a greater sense of responsibility. The discipline I developed through wrestling helped me tackle academic challenges with renewed vigor and approach personal relationships with a newfound maturity.
Reflecting on my journey, I realize how transformative wrestling has been for me. The sport provided me with more than just physical fitness, it offered me a community, a purpose, and a sense of identity. The friendships I formed on the mat were genuine and supportive, differing vastly from the poor connections I had previously experienced. These relationships were built on mutual respect and shared goals, creating a bond that extended beyond the months of the wrestling season.
In conclusion, wrestling has been an extraordinary experience that has shaped my life in ways I could not have anticipated. It offered me a place where I felt I truly belonged, and in return, it gave me a sense of confidence, dedication, and discipline. I am incredibly grateful for the positive impact wrestling has had on my personal growth and development. The lessons I learned and the community I found through this sport have left an indelible mark on my life, and for that, I am profoundly thankful.
