Bio

I am a first-generation college student currently earning my B.A. in Political Science at CSU San Bernardino. After taking time away from school, I came back with a clear sense of purpose and a drive to finish strong. When I transferred into the CSU system, my GPA was 2.36. Through hard work and straight A’s over the past year, I’ve raised it to a 2.81. I’m on track to graduate with a 3.0 or higher. I work full-time in public affairs and have been active in political leadership and community advocacy throughout my academic journey. My interests include national security, diplomacy, and civil rights, with a particular focus on how these issues impact marginalized communities. I plan to pursue a master’s degree in National Security Studies after graduation and eventually build a career in public service. Outside of school and work, I’ve held leadership roles in local political clubs, contributed to campaigns that support reproductive freedom and LGBTQ+ rights, and stayed deeply engaged in issues that affect real people. I believe public policy should be shaped by both knowledge and lived experience, and I bring both to the table.

My best friend is Nick Shepard. We met while working on a Congressional campaign all the way back in 2006. He was the Field Director, and I served as Deputy Communications Director and bodyman to the candidate with the comical name of Charlie Brown. Campaign life can be intense, and the long days & constant pressure tend to bring out both the best and the worst in people. But from the very beginning, Nick and I clicked. We had the same work ethic, the same weird (and sometimes dark) sense of humor, and the same belief in responsibility to the mission at hand. We were often the first people to open the office in the morning and the last ones to lock up at night. In that kind of environment, bonds are formed quickly, and ours only grew stronger as the campaign went on. After the race ended, we both got hired on to the same presidential campaign in New Hampshire. Even though we were assigned to opposite ends of the state, we stayed in constant contact. We talked through staffing issues, joked about the chaos of field life, and kept each other sane during one of the wildest campaign seasons of our lives. When our candidate won the New Hampshire primary, Nick and I drove cross-country together from Manchester, NH back to Sacramento, CA. That road trip was filled with bad food, great music, hours of conversation, and the kind of unfiltered honesty that only happens between best friends. It solidified everything I already knew about our friendship. Since that time, our lives have taken very different paths. Nick stepped away from political life and went to law school. I stayed in the world of public affairs and continued working in advocacy and legislative operations. But through every chapter, we’ve stayed close. I encouraged him to go on his first date with the woman who would later become his wife. I was honored to stand beside him as his best man. He returned the favor by helping me through one of the lowest points in my life when I was struggling with doubt, fear, and uncertainty about my future. We have seen each other at our best and at our worst, and that has only made our friendship stronger. Nick is the kind of friend who never forgets to show up. He listens without judgment, tells the truth even when it is hard to hear, and has always believed in me even when I did not believe in myself. We still talk nearly every day. Whether it is a quick check-in or a long conversation about life, politics, or the absurdity of the world, we always find time for each other. What makes Nick special is not just that he's a good friend. He's a good person in the way that matters most. He is thoughtful, loyal, and deeply committed to doing the right thing. He's the friend who will stand by you when things fall apart and celebrate you when things go right. He has been one of the most constant and supportive people in my life, and I know I would not be the person I am today without him. Everyone deserves a friend like Nick, and I am lucky to have him in my life. This friendship has given me a sense of stability, confidence, and belonging that has carried me through more than one rough season. He is not just my best friend. He is my chosen family, and I am proud to call him my brother.

I am a first-generation college student currently earning my B.A. in Political Science at CSU San Bernardino, with plans to pursue a master’s degree in National Security Studies. After years away from school, I returned with clarity, discipline, and a renewed drive to complete my education and serve the country in a meaningful way. Since returning, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA and raised my overall academic standing from a 2.36 to a 2.81, with a 3.0 within reach by graduation. These numbers are more than just statistics: they represent focus, resilience, and my commitment to becoming a public servant. My goal is to work for the United States Department of State or Department of Defense, ideally in a role that helps rebuild trust in our government and restores the foundational belief that public service can be a force for good. Whether through international diplomacy or national defense strategy, I want to be part of the work that strengthens our institutions and protects the values that define this country. I believe that honesty, inclusion, and transparency are critical to our national security, and I hope to contribute to a public service culture that reflects those values. I have spent the last three decades working in political advocacy, communications, and legislative affairs. I have fought for reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ rights, and racial equity at the community level, but I know I can do more. I want to do that work at the federal level... and more. My life experience, including my identity as a gay man living with diabetes, gives me a perspective that is grounded in both compassion and clarity. I want to be the kind of federal employee who serves with integrity, listens to others, and never loses sight of the people behind the policies. In politics, it seems as though we've lost commonality and vision, playing tit-for-tat games instead of striving to do the work of serving the people's best interests. This scholarship would directly support my path forward. It would obviously ease the financial strain of pursuing graduate school while working full time and it would allow me to continue building the skills and knowledge I need to thrive in a public service career. More importantly, it would represent an investment in the kind of leadership I hope to embody: practical, principled, and committed to country above ego. Public service is not a fallback for me. It is the goal. I am ready to serve, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be considered for this scholarship.

Returning to school as an adult has been one of the most challenging decisions of my life. My journey towards higher education hasn't followed a straight path per se, but every step along the way has deepened my sense of purpose. I'm a first-generation college student currently pursuing a B.A. in Political Science at CSU San Bernardino, with plans to earn a master’s degree in National Security Studies at my soon-to-be alma mater. I came back to school after a long absence to work political campaigns at the congressional and presidential levels, now determined to finish what I started. Since re-enrolling, I have raised my GPA from a 2.36 (dropping out without enrolling is a life lesson best told at another time) to a 2.81, with a 3.0 in sight by graduation. Much of my professional and personal journey has taken place outside of the classroom. I have worked for nearly thirty years in the world of politics and public service, from reproductive rights advocacy to LGBTQ+ leadership, and now in legislative operations at a respected public affairs firm here in Sacramento. These roles have given me insight into how government functions on both the inside and the outside. They have also shown me the importance of creating space for people who are often pushed to the margins. As someone who is LGBTQ+, Scottish-Irish, and living with diabetes, I have learned that identity is not a barrier to success: it is a source of strength in my life. My values are shaped by my lived experience. I believe in equity, dignity, and the responsibility to leave things better than I found them. My commitment to community service runs deep. I've held leadership roles in local political clubs, mentored younger advocates, and stayed actively involved in campaigns and candidates that hold similar values to mine. I see education as a tool for public impact, and I intend to use mine to help shape policies that protect civil rights, strengthen democratic institutions, and uplift underserved communities. Graduate study will help me sharpen the tools I already use in my daily work. It will also give me the academic foundation to pursue higher-level positions in government or diplomacy. My long-term goal is to serve as a public official in either the USB Departments of Defense or State, bringing both policy expertise and lived perspective to the table. I want to help restore trust in public institutions and ensure that more people feel represented, respected, and protected by their government. This scholarship would help relieve the financial burden of returning to school while working full time. It would allow me to stay focused on my academic goals and complete my degree without unnecessary delay. More than that, it would serve as a meaningful recognition of the road I've traveled and the future I'm working to build. I am so proud of the progress I have made, and I'm even more excited about what lies ahead.
