The First song that came to Mind was ‘i’ by Kendrick Lamar, from the album ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’. The Album consists of many themes ranging from Depression, Materialism, Sex, Racism, Spirituality, Identity Crisis and Redemption. However ‘i’ is a very powerful song, the message being that even through trial and tribulation and Tests from Satan himself, Kendrick Lamar is going to stay positive and choose Self-Love to pull him through Obstacles and Negativity. It’s meaning is the polar opposite of another Track on the album Titled ‘u’. Where Kendrick is having an Emotional Breakdown, a conversation with his own self where he drunkenly Spews many things that he Hates about himself, or times that he Failed his Loved Ones. The Song ends abruptly at a Hint at Suicide, revealing that he actually was talking to himself the Whole time. I honestly respect Kendrick Lamar for not only his Amazing Musical Skill but to be so vulnerable and display his raw emotions to the World in order to reach those in Need is Admirable. It shows people that Even a Rap God like Kendrick Lamar goes through Darkness in Life! And when we go through times like that we must evaluate ourselves and hold ourselves accountable in order to improve. ‘u’ shows us the Negative manifestation of this while ‘i’ encourages the listener. The chorus of the song “I Love Myself” being recited by the listener is empowering within itself. The transformation between the Two Songs encourages us to not Succumb to negativity, paranoia and self doubt but to Stand Close to God and Push Forward in Life.
