A significant hurdle I encountered was failing the fourth grade. The setback was disheartening and made me question my abilities. However, rather than allowing it to define me, I used it as a learning opportunity. Repeating the grade gave me a chance to strengthen my academic foundation and develop effective study habits. I learned the value of hard work and the importance of asking for help when needed. This experience fostered a growth mindset, reminding me that failure is not the end but a stepping stone toward success.
Currently, I am navigating the challenges of online schooling, which presents its own set of obstacles. The lack of in-person interaction can be isolating, making it difficult to stay motivated and engaged. However, I have adapted by seeking out online study groups and leveraging digital resources to enhance my learning. This experience has taught me valuable lessons about self-discipline and time management, skills that will serve me well in college and beyond.
Despite these challenges, I am determined to pursue higher education and make a positive impact on my community. My experiences have ignited a passion for helping others, particularly those who face adversity. I plan to study medicine and the natural sciences, focusing on how I can harness my knowledge to improve the health and well-being of others. I believe that access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right, and I am committed to working toward that goal.
In the future, I envision giving back to my community by establishing programs that provide mentorship and support for at-risk youth. I want to create safe spaces where young people can learn essential life skills, just as I have done at the youth center. By sharing my story and the lessons I’ve learned, I hope to inspire others to overcome their obstacles and pursue their dreams.
In conclusion, the obstacles I have faced on my journey to higher education have shaped me into a resilient and determined individual. My experiences with loss, failure, and adaptation have equipped me with the skills necessary to succeed in the future. I am committed to using my education not only to advance my career but also to uplift my community and empower the next generation.

The incarceration of my biological father just one week before I was born and the subsequent incarceration of my stepfather in 2019 for stealing equipment to provide for our family have profoundly shaped my life and perspective. Growing up without my biological father has left a significant void in my identity. His absence meant that I had to navigate the complexities of my family dynamic with the understanding that I would never know him or the potential support he could have provided. This loss has instilled in me a deep sense of resilience and determination to create a different path for myself and my family.
When my stepfather was incarcerated, it was a difficult time for our family. He had resorted to stealing to put food on the table, a decision that, while desperate, highlighted the harsh realities many families face. His actions were driven by the need to provide for us, but they also demonstrated how circumstances can spiral into situations that lead to incarceration. Witnessing this cycle of incarceration and its impact on my family has made me acutely aware of the choices we make and the consequences they carry.
To avoid repeating the same circumstances that have affected my loved ones, I am committed to building a positive future for myself through education and personal development. I understand that the choices I make today will shape my tomorrow. My goal is to focus on my studies and pursue a career in medicine, which not only offers stability but also allows me to give back to my community. By investing in my education and surrounding myself with supportive mentors and peers, I aim to break the cycle of hardship that has touched my family.
Self-care is essential for coping with the emotional weight of my family’s incarceration. I prioritize maintaining a balanced lifestyle by engaging in activities that nurture my mental and emotional well-being. Writing serves as an essential outlet for me, allowing me to process my thoughts and feelings. Additionally, I spend time volunteering at the youth center, where I teach children valuable skills. This work not only keeps me grounded but also reinforces my commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others. I also practice mindfulness and take time for self-reflection, which helps me stay focused on my goals and aspirations.
In conclusion, my experiences with my biological father’s and stepfather’s incarceration have profoundly influenced my life. They have motivated me to strive for a better future and to support others in breaking free from the cycles of hardship. I am committed to making choices that will lead me away from the circumstances that have affected my family, and I will continue to practice self-care to ensure I remain resilient and focused on my journey. Through education, community involvement, and a commitment to self-improvement, I aim to build a life that reflects my values and the lessons I have learned from my past.
Michael Rudometkin Memorial Scholarship
Selflessness is a core value that I strive to embody in my daily life, whether through my work in the community or through spontaneous acts of kindness. My commitment to helping others is reflected in my role at the youth center, where I teach children essential trade skills and ethical home skills. This work goes beyond merely sharing knowledge; it’s about empowering young individuals to build a brighter future for themselves and their families. By equipping them with practical skills, I aim to foster their confidence and self-sufficiency, ultimately encouraging them to give back to their own communities.
One poignant example of my selflessness occurred during a family trip to the store. Armed with my parents’ money to buy items they needed, I noticed a homeless man standing by the entrance as I walked out. He looked tired and hungry, and despite my initial hesitation, I felt compelled to act. I had $50 left in my hand, a sum that felt significant to me at the time. In that moment, I decided to give him the leftovers from my purchase. I was nervous about how my parents would react, fearing they might be upset that I had given away money that belonged to them.
When I returned home, I braced myself for their response. To my surprise, my parents were not angry; instead, they expressed admiration for my generosity. They revealed that they had been about to tell me I could keep the leftover money for myself, but I had already left. This moment taught me that selflessness can lead to unexpected joy, both for the giver and the recipient.
Through these experiences, I have learned that selflessness is not always about grand gestures. It can be found in the small, everyday actions we take to help those around us. Whether I am mentoring children in the youth center or sharing my resources with someone in need, I strive to approach each situation with empathy and compassion. It is important for me to create an environment where others feel valued and supported, especially those who may not have the same opportunities that I have been given.
In essence, embodying selflessness means recognizing the struggles of others and choosing to act in a way that uplifts them. It involves putting the needs of others before my own, whether in a structured setting like the youth center or in everyday situations that call for kindness. I hope to continue this journey of selflessness throughout my life, creating a ripple effect that inspires others to do the same.

Tamurai's Adventure Scholarship
As I sit down to reflect on my journey so far, I am reminded of the rich tapestry of experiences that have shaped my identity. My name is Jahzi Jayquan Nazareth Collins, but I prefer to be called Nazareth. Growing up in a large family with eight siblings, I learned the value of community and support at an early age. My mother’s tireless work to provide for us instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and responsibility. These early experiences fostered my desire to make a difference in the world, particularly through the field of medicine.
From a young age, I found myself fascinated by the intricacies of the human body and the healing process. I spent countless hours reading about how different plants could be used for medicinal purposes, nurturing a dream of one day becoming a healthcare provider who not only treats ailments but also emphasizes the importance of holistic care. I envision a career where I can integrate my interests in nursing and plant-based medicine to develop a more comprehensive approach to health and wellness. I aspire to help individuals recognize the power of nature in healing and promote healthy lifestyles within underserved communities.
During my time volunteering at a youth center, I encountered various challenges faced by young people today. Many of them struggled with access to healthcare and education, which deeply resonated with me. It became clear that I wanted to advocate for those who often lack a voice in the healthcare system. By pursuing a medical career, I aim to bridge the gap between traditional medicine and community health education. I want to empower individuals with the knowledge they need to take charge of their health and well-being, especially in marginalized communities where resources are scarce.
One of the most impactful moments in my journey occurred during a community health fair I helped organize. I witnessed firsthand the disparities in healthcare access and the lack of understanding about preventive care. I saw families who had never received proper medical guidance and young people who had never been taught the basics of health and nutrition. It was a wake-up call for me, reinforcing my commitment to not only pursue a career in medicine but also to engage in community outreach. I plan to work closely with local organizations to create educational programs that focus on preventive care and wellness, ensuring that everyone has access to the information they need to live healthier lives.
Moreover, my interest in cultivating the earth and understanding how to use plants for healing will play a significant role in my approach to medicine. I believe in the power of integrative health, where traditional medical practices and natural remedies coexist. This perspective is particularly relevant in today’s world, where many people are seeking alternatives to conventional treatments. By combining my knowledge of nursing with herbal medicine, I hope to provide patients with a more holistic view of health, one that honors both their medical history and their individual preferences.
In conclusion, my journey toward a medical career is driven by a passion for healing and a desire to serve others. I aim to make a positive impact on the world by advocating for health equity and empowering communities through education. I believe that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare and the knowledge to make informed decisions about their health. As I continue on this path, I carry with me the lessons learned from my family, my experiences, and my commitment to nurturing a healthier world for future generations.

As I stood at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, the sheer magnitude of their presence took my breath away. Towering peaks, their jagged summits capped with glistening snow, loomed above me like ancient guardians. The crisp mountain air filled my lungs, tinged with the scent of pine and wildflowers, awakening a sense of adventure I hadn’t felt in years. This trip, a journey through the heart of the Rockies, would become one of my most cherished outdoor experiences, shaping my perspective on life and deepening my appreciation for nature's beauty.
The sun rose over the mountains, casting a golden glow that illuminated the vibrant greens of the forest below. Each step I took on the winding trails was a new discovery; the crunch of gravel beneath my hiking boots, the flutter of wings as a hawk soared above, and the distant sound of a rushing stream. With every turn, the landscape transformed. One moment, I was enveloped in a serene grove of aspen trees, their white trunks shimmering like silver against the blue sky. The next, I stood at the edge of a cliff, gazing down at the vast expanse of valley below, where the river snaked through like a ribbon of liquid glass.
One of the most vivid memories from that trip was the day we hiked to Emerald Lake. The path was steep and rocky, testing our endurance. Sweat dripped from my brow, and my legs burned with every uphill stride. Yet, the anticipation kept me going, the promise of something beautiful just around the bend. As we crested the final hill, the sight that greeted us was nothing short of magical. The lake, surrounded by towering peaks, shimmered a brilliant turquoise, reflecting the sky like a giant gemstone. I remember standing in awe, feeling the cool mist from the waterfall cascading nearby, the sound a soothing melody against the backdrop of the mountains.
This journey was not without its challenges. On our way back, dark clouds gathered ominously, and a sudden storm swept through, drenching us in icy rain. In that moment of uncertainty, as lightning illuminated the sky, fear gripped my heart. But instead of succumbing to panic, we huddled together, sharing stories and laughter as the rain poured down. It was a reminder of our shared resilience, of how we could face the storm together. When the clouds finally parted, a vibrant rainbow arched across the sky, a beautiful reward for perseverance.
This experience in the Rockies profoundly shaped my outlook on life. It taught me the importance of embracing challenges and finding beauty in moments of struggle. Just like the hike that tested my limits, life often presents obstacles that require determination and a sense of camaraderie. I realized that every summit reached is a testament to the journey taken, not just a destination.
Since that trip, I have carried these lessons with me. In school, when faced with difficult subjects or overwhelming assignments, I remind myself of that steep trail and the strength I found in the face of adversity. I approach challenges with a mindset of resilience, understanding that they are opportunities for growth. The memories of those breathtaking views and the Drive built during that trip inspired me to cherish the beauty in both nature and human connections.
My journey through the Rocky Mountains was more than just an outdoor adventure; it was a transformative experience that forever changed my perspective. As I continue my life's journey, I carry the spirit of the Rockies with me, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead, and seeking the beauty in every moment.
Illinois Pain & Spine - Excellence in Action Scholarship
During my time working with the youth center, I encountered a situation that truly exemplified the core pillars of being humble and hungry. Our youth center's mission is to provide kids and teens with essential ethical skills like cooking, sewing, mechanic work, and agriculture. We believe these skills not only prepare them for future careers but also instill a sense of responsibility and self-sufficiency. However, not everyone in the community appreciated our efforts. While we were out raising funds to support our programs, we faced racist slurs and disrespect from some individuals who did not agree with what our youth center stands for.
Despite these challenges, I remained humble in the face of adversity. I understood that responding with anger or frustration would not help our cause. Instead, I focused on our mission and the positive impact we were making on the lives of young people. I calmly addressed the negativity, emphasizing the importance of our work and the difference it makes in the community. I explained how our programs provide a safe space for kids and teens to learn valuable skills, stay out of trouble, and build a better future for themselves. By maintaining my composure and staying true to our values, I was able to defuse tense situations and continue our fundraising efforts.
At the same time, I was driven by a hunger to bring more kids and teens into the youth center. I knew that the skills we were teaching could change their lives for the better. I worked tirelessly to expand our outreach, connecting with schools, community organizations, and local businesses to spread the word about our programs. I organized events, created promotional materials, and personally reached out to families to encourage them to get involved. I also sought out partnerships with local businesses and professionals who could provide additional resources and mentorship opportunities for our participants.
My efforts paid off as we saw an increase in participation and support for the youth center. The kids and teens who joined our programs not only learned valuable skills but also found a safe and supportive environment where they could thrive. Many of them shared how the youth center had positively impacted their lives, giving them a sense of purpose and direction. This experience reinforced the importance of staying true to our values and being persistent in the face of challenges. By embodying humility and hunger, I was able to make a meaningful impact on our community and help shape a brighter future for the youth we serve.
This experience taught me humility and perseverance are crucial when facing adversity. It also showed me the power of being driven by a purpose greater than oneself. The positive changes we brought to the lives of many young people and the support we garnered from the community were testaments to the importance of our mission. This journey not only strengthened my resolve but also deepened my commitment to making a difference, no matter the obstacles.

The Impact of Loss: A Journey of Resilience and Growth
The loss of my biological father has been a defining experience in my life, shaping me in profound ways. His absence has left a void, but it has also been a catalyst for personal growth, academic determination, and financial resilience. This essay explores the multifaceted impact of his loss and how it has driven me to overcome challenges and pursue my dreams with unwavering resolve.
On a personal level, the loss of my father has been a journey of navigating complex emotions. His absence created a sense of incompleteness, as if a part of my identity was missing. The few memories I have of him are fleeting and bittersweet, filled with a mix of curiosity and longing. Despite the emotional void, I have learned to find strength in my journey of self-healing. This experience has taught me the importance of empathy and understanding, as I have had to navigate my own feelings and those of others around me. It has also instilled in me a deep sense of resilience, as I have learned to cope with the challenges that life has thrown my way.
Academically, the loss of my father has been both a challenge and a motivator. Growing up without his presence meant that I had to rely on my own determination and the support of my mother and other family members. There were times when the emotional burden felt overwhelming, but I channeled my grief into my studies. I became deeply involved in school activities, such as student council and the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), and pursued my interests in medicine, science, and environmental activism. These pursuits have not only provided me with a sense of purpose but have also been a way to honor my father's memory by striving for excellence and making a positive impact in the world.
the loss of my father has presented significant challenges. As a single-parent household, my mother has had to work tirelessly to provide for us. This has meant that I have had to be resourceful and proactive in seeking opportunities to support my education. I have taken on part-time jobs, applied for scholarships, and utilized my skills in web design and AI to earn extra income. These experiences have taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and financial responsibility. They have also fueled my determination to succeed academically and professionally, so that I can one day provide a better future for myself and my family.
The loss of my father has undeniably shaped my life in profound ways. It has been a journey of navigating grief, finding resilience, and striving for personal and academic excellence. While his absence has left a void, it has also been a source of motivation and strength. I am determined to honor his memory by pursuing my dreams and making a positive impact in the world. From a young age, I have been driven by a passion for education, medicine, and helping others. As a 16-year-old bookkeeper and Ambassador for my nonprofit Youth Center, I have had the privilege of working closely with Board members to create financial documents and secure government grants. This experience has not only honed my organizational and leadership skills but also solidified my commitment to making a positive impact in my community.
My ultimate goal is to pursue a career in medicine, with a focus on bacteriology and microbiology. I am fascinated by the microscopic world and the potential it holds for improving human health. To achieve this, I have immersed myself in various subjects such as math, science, medical science, biology, and anatomy.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I have actively participated in extracurricular activities that align with my goals. As a school peer mentor, I have had the opportunity to guide and support my fellow students, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. My involvement in the High School Student Council and the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) has further developed my leadership and teamwork skills.
However, the path to achieving my goals has not been without its challenges. Balancing my responsibilities at the Youth Center, my schoolwork, and my extracurricular activities requires careful time management and unwavering determination. Beyond these logistical challenges, I have faced personal hardships that have tested my resilience. Struggling with depression and the emotional turmoil of running away from home have been significant obstacles. Additionally, I have had to navigate the complex process of self-healing after losing a father I never truly had, which has been a profound and ongoing journey.
Despite these hardships, I remain steadfast in my pursuit of a college education and a career in medicine. I am inspired by the potential to make a difference in the world through scientific research and medical advancements. My experiences have taught me the value of perseverance, resilience, and the importance of giving back to the community.
In conclusion, my goals for the future are rooted in my passion for education, medicine, and helping others. Through my academic achievements, extracurricular involvement, and dedication to my nonprofit work, I am actively working towards these goals. While the journey may be challenging, I am confident that my determination and commitment will lead me to success. And, yet I have a dream that If I can't get into college as planned, I want to travel the world from Ocean to mountain and live the best life I have available.

Walking to the store to get groceries for my family should have been a simple, uneventful task. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, this routine errand turned into a moment of intense anxiety and humiliation. As I walked with my mask on, trying to stay safe, I noticed a police car following me. My heart began to race, and a knot formed in my stomach. The presence of the police car filled me with a sense of dread, a feeling all too familiar to many African Americans who have experienced racial profiling.
The officer eventually stopped me and asked where I was going and what I was doing. Despite my calm and respectful explanation, I could see the doubt in his eyes. It was as if my words were not enough to convince him of my innocence. This encounter was not just about being questioned; it was about being judged and suspected simply because of the color of my skin. The humiliation I felt in that moment was profound. It made me feel like an outsider in my own community, a place where I should have felt safe and accepted.
This experience was a stark reminder of the racial prejudice that still exists in our society. It highlighted the challenges that African Americans face daily, especially during a time of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic itself brought about a new set of fears and uncertainties, but for many people of color, it also revealed existing issues of racial profiling and discrimination.
Despite the humiliation and fear, I refused to let this experience define me. I focused on my studies and my role as an ambassador for my nonprofit Youth center "Touched by T&A", which determined to make a positive impact on my community. I sought support from my family, friends, and mentors who reminded me of my worth and potential. Their encouragement helped me to persevere and stay true to my goals.
This adversity shaped me into a stronger and more resilient person. It taught me the importance of perseverance and the power of education. I realized that my experiences could inspire others facing similar challenges. To anyone going through similar circumstances, my advice is to stay true to yourself and never give up on your dreams. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and support you. Remember that your worth isn't defined by others' perceptions but by your actions and character. Use your experiences as fuel to drive you forward and make a positive impact on the world.

My name is Jahzi, and this is my story.
From a young age, I felt the weight of my father's absence. He was involved in a violent gang, and one night, he was killed in a planned gang revenge car wreck. I was just a child, but the impact of that night stayed with me. My father never wanted me, and that rejection left a deep scar. I grew up hating myself, feeling like something essential was missing, for 8 years I dealt with this.
To cope with these feelings, I immersed myself in my studies and extracurricular activities. I surrounded myself with achievements, hoping that if I excelled enough, I might finally feel worthy. I became the top student in my class, won numerous awards, and was admired by my peers and teachers. But no matter how much I achieved, the emptiness inside me remained.
One day, the pressure became too much. I ran away from home, hoping to escape the pain that seemed to follow me everywhere. Alone and scared, I broke down on the intersection by the Highway. For the first time, I allowed myself to cry, to feel the weight of my grief and anger.
In that moment of vulnerability, I found a small glimmer of hope. Later I would find myself meditating in nature, finding a weird peace in the quiet and beauty around me. I started telling myself that I was enough, that I was worthy of love and happiness. Slowly, I am beginning to heal.
My journey of self-transformation is not easy, but I find strength in my faith. Through prayer and reflection, I feel a connection to God that gives me the courage to keep going. I realized that my worth was not defined by my father's rejection or my achievements, but by the love and grace of God. His love of me and expectation of what he created me for is enough for me.
As I continue to meditate and affirm my worth, I am seeing myself in a new light. I am no longer the boy who felt incomplete and unworthy. I am a young black man on a journey of healing and self-discovery, guided by my faith and the beauty of the world around me.
My story is a testament to the power of resilience and self-love. Despite the pain and challenges I faced and am still facing; I have found a way to let healing transform my life. And in doing so, I discovered that I am always enough, just as I am.

Growing up, I faced a lot of challenges that could have easily knocked me down. My father walked out on us when I was young, and my mom had to work multiple jobs, so she wasn’t around much. It was tough, and I often felt alone. On top of that, some family members didn’t believe in my dreams of going to college. They thought I was aiming too high and would never make it. But I didn’t let that stop me. I found solace in learning and discovered a passion for healing people through food and medicine. Cooking became my therapy, a way to channel my emotions and create something positive. I also immersed myself in my studies, determined to prove everyone wrong. Despite the negativity around me, I pushed through my depression and focused on my goals. Coping with depression during those tough times was incredibly challenging, but I found a few ways to manage and eventually overcome it. First, I turned to cooking. It became my therapy, a way to express myself and find some peace. Plus, I got to learn how to whip up a pretty bomb Bean Pie and Fried Fish Spaghetti Dinner, creating meals allowed me to focus on something positive and productive, which helped lift my spirits. I also started learning about the healing properties of different foods, which deepened my passion for nutrition and medicine. Second, I leaned on my studies. School became a sanctuary where I could escape from my problems and immerse myself in learning. Achieving high grades and awards gave me a sense of accomplishment and purpose. It was a reminder that I could succeed despite the odds. My hard work paid off. I started achieving high awards and got into the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). Being first in my classes was a huge accomplishment, and it showed me that I could overcome anything with determination and resilience. In the future, I want to use my knowledge and passion to help my community. I dream of becoming a nutritionist or a doctor, someone who can heal people with both food and medicine. I want to create programs that educate people about healthy eating and provide access to nutritious food. My goal is to build an inclusive environment where everyone feels empowered to take control of their health and well-being. The whole point of my story is that, even though what you may experience may be painful, if you let that motivate you for the better. You can Become ANYTHING DESPITE YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES.

Hey there! My name is Jahzi Collins, and I’m a 16-year-old high school student. Growing up, I’ve always been passionate about learning and helping others. I believe that education is a powerful tool that can change lives and communities, especially for people who look like me. That is when we take it out of the hands of other people and mold our learning techniques to suit our own desires.
As a future educator, I plan to make a positive impact by creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment where every student feels valued and heard. I envision a space where students have access to endless resources to achieve their dreams. I want to inspire young minds to dream big and reach their full potential, regardless of their background or circumstances.
One of my goals is to incorporate more diverse perspectives and histories into the curriculum. I think it’s important for students to see themselves represented in what they learn and to understand the contributions of people from all walks of life. By doing this, I hope to foster a sense of pride and belonging in my students. Representation matters, and when students see themselves in their studies, it can ignite a passion for learning and a deeper connection to the material.
Additionally, I want to use my platform to advocate for educational equity and access. This means working to ensure that all students have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed, whether that’s through after-school programs, mentorship, or community partnerships. If this means removing social and political barriers to reach into the untapped greatness in each striving soul, then that's what I shall do. I believe that every student deserves a fair chance to succeed, and I am committed to fighting for that.
I also plan to integrate technology into the classroom to enhance learning experiences. In today’s digital age, technology can be a powerful tool to engage students and provide them with new ways to explore and understand the world. By incorporating interactive lessons, virtual field trips, and online resources, I aim to make learning more dynamic and accessible.
Furthermore, I want to focus on social-emotional learning (SEL) in my teaching. SEL helps students develop essential life skills such as empathy, self-awareness, and emotional regulation. By prioritizing SEL, I hope to create a classroom environment where students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. I believe that when students are emotionally healthy, they are better equipped to tackle academic challenges and succeed in life.
Ultimately, I believe that by empowering the next generation with knowledge and confidence, faith and hope, truth and the ability to understand reason, we can create a more just and equitable world. I cannot wait to be a part of that change and to help shape the future through education. My journey as an educator will be driven by a commitment to inclusivity, equity, and the belief that every student has the potential to achieve greatness. Together, we can build a brighter future for all.

Jennifer and Rob Tower Memorial Scholarship
I will not lie I have not been a very compassionate person but, I think that in a way others learning how to deal with my pain and struggles has produced in me a great empathy to feel the pain that I bring to others. One instance is that I was falling into depression last year, and before I ran away from home, I remember telling my mom that " I have been trying to live and be everything you want me to be but I can't" In my head, no one could tell me I was wrong. And my mom, as I learned later, wanted to tell me and show me how to get the best out of life without going through what she went through. But my emotions held me from seeing that. I saw the expression on her face after I said those things. And I could see deep sadness and anger, but love. Why love? Because she saw so much of herself in me. And it scared her. What might this have to do with compassion you might ask? well, It was the first moment in my life where my consciousness gave me a glimpse into the true way Someone felt, dealing with me. The first time someone's feelings seemed greater than my own. It was in that moment that I quickly apologized and realized what I had said. I had unknowingly felt compassion for her emotions. Nonetheless, that night as I remised over how I consistently made her feel, it struck me as the type of son I was acting to be. So eventually I ran away from home. Knowing In my heart that I was not good enough for my mom. While all she could think of was "where is my baby? where is my son?" What does this have to do with compassion you might also ask? It shows the moment where I felt the pain of someone through their thoughts and feeling for someone was unusual for me at that time. I always thought I was the victim of everything. Because my biological dad left me, my mom always at work, my family letting people do anything to me and telling me not to tell my mom. It was a hard time for me. But when the social worker brought me back to her, All I could think of was what have I done? I realized the effects of my decisions on her. It was the first time in my life where I felt like Seeing someone Elses pains. Why bring this moment up when asked to write about something compassionate, it's because it was this time in my life where I was not the center of attention, where I gave someone else some of my broken heart, where I learned love, pain, anger and hate, and how they came from me to others. I born witnessed to my actions and put forth my every actions after for my mother. I never let a day go by without giving her my love. We are all we have in this world, and I am so thankful for her. And with all the love I have given her she has been able to heal from all her pains and traumas. She reconnected with my grandmother, Fixed issues with my father's parents (because he is dead). And she has grown up holistically. She is now beautiful inside and out. And now you see why I said, " I think that in a way others learning how to deal with my pain and struggles has produced in me a great empathy to feel the pain that I bring to others." And now she has started a non-profit youth center dedicated to the improvement and help of the children who struggle to cope with life like me. And slowly it has been growing.
Black Leaders Scholarship
The Honorable Elijah Muhammad is a pivotal figure in Black History. As well as one who truly and deeply has had a major impact on my life. Born in 1897 in Sandersville, Georgia, Elijah Muhammad emerged from humble beginnings to become the leader and co-founder of the modern-day Nation of Islam (NOI). This religious movement was more than just a spiritual organization; it was (and still is) a beacon of hope and empowerment for Black people during some of the most dispiriting times in American history.
Elijah Muhammad's leadership not only shaped the course of the Nation of Islam but also produced extraordinary figures such as Malcolm X and Minister Louis Farrakhan. Malcolm X, under Muhammad’s mentorship, transformed from a disenchanted young man into a powerful voice for justice and equality. Minister Farrakhan, too, emerged as a dynamic leader, continuing the legacy of empowerment and advocacy that Muhammad had championed.
What makes Elijah Muhammad’s contributions so remarkable is the way he resurrected and uplifted a community struggling under the weight of systemic oppression. He didn’t just talk about change; he acted upon it. Muhammad established banks, schools, housing projects, and agricultural movements, providing tools and institutions that nurtured self-reliance and economic independence. He created restaurants and wellness programs that encouraged healthier living.
Beyond these achievements, Elijah Muhammad instilled a sense of spiritual and mental resurrection among his followers. His teachings provided a counter-narrative to the destructive forces of slavery, police brutality, white supremacy, and Jim Crow laws. He offered not just a path to personal upliftment but a vision of collective empowerment, urging African Americans to reclaim their identity and potential.
It’s crazy that his contributions are not more widely discussed or taught in schools. Yet, my admiration for Elijah Muhammad remains consistent. His ideas challenged the status quo and encouraged a profound rethinking of African American identity and self-determination. He stressed the importance of education and health, advocating for better educational opportunities and dietary changes that promoted overall well-being.
Even after his death in 1975, the legacy of Elijah Muhammad endures. His teachings and the institutions he founded continue to inspire and influence new generations. The Nation of Islam remains a significant force within the African American community, a testament to his enduring impact. Elijah Muhammad’s life and work offer a powerful example of leadership, resilience, and vision, demonstrating how one individual's commitment to change can uplift an entire community and reshape history.
