One issue in the current U.S. aviation industry that frustrates me most is the lack of consistent accessibility and dignity for passengers with disabilities, especially wheelchair users and passengers with limited mobility. As someone who is paralyzed and pursuing aviation management, this issue feels personal because air travel should provide freedom and independence, yet for many disabled travelers it becomes stressful, unsafe, and unpredictable. The biggest problem is how mobility equipment and disabled passengers are handled throughout the travel process. Wheelchairs are frequently damaged during loading and unloading, and passengers are often left waiting long periods for assistance after landing. In some cases, travelers are even injured during transfers between their wheelchair and the aircraft seat. For a disabled passenger, a wheelchair is not just luggage. It is mobility, independence, and daily life. Damaging it can leave someone stranded for days or weeks. This issue also affects airline operations and customer service. Delays in boarding assistance can slow departure times. Poor training or communication between gate agents, ramp crews, and contractors creates operational inefficiencies and increases complaints, liability costs, and negative public attention for airlines. As the aviation industry continues growing, accessibility failures can damage customer trust and expose airlines to legal and financial consequences. My aviation management education would help me approach this problem realistically from both the operational and leadership side. First, I would push for stronger standardized disability-assistance training for airline and airport employees, especially for ground crews and contracted wheelchair-service providers. Training should focus not only on procedures, but also on communication, safety, and respect for passengers. Second, I would advocate for better tracking and handling systems for wheelchairs and medical equipment, similar to baggage-tracking technology already used by many airlines. Improving accountability would reduce damage and improve passenger confidence. Third, I would work toward operational improvements such as earlier coordination between gate agents, cabin crews, and assistance teams to reduce boarding confusion and post-flight delays. Small process improvements can make a major difference in both customer satisfaction and on-time performance. Finally, I would support investment in more accessible aircraft cabin designs and boarding technology. While large changes take time and money, aviation managers play an important role in pushing airlines and airports toward long-term improvements that benefit both passengers and operations. Accessibility in aviation matters to me because air travel represents opportunity, education, work, and connection. Disabled passengers deserve the same level of safety, efficiency, and respect as everyone else. As an aviation management student, I want to help create an industry where accessibility is treated as an operational priority instead of an afterthought.
Frank and Patty Skerl Educational Scholarship for the Physically Disabled
Being part of the disabled community has significantly shaped the way I view the world and the way I approach my future goals. Living with paralysis has given me firsthand experience with the physical, emotional, and social challenges that many people with disabilities face every day. It has made me more aware of how important accessibility, inclusion, and understanding are in society. Simple things that many people take for granted, such as transportation, building access, or daily routines, can become major obstacles for someone with a disability. Experiencing these challenges personally has taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of perseverance even during difficult situations. At the same time, being part of the disabled community has also shown me the strength and determination that people develop when they are forced to adapt. I have learned that disability does not define a person’s value, intelligence, or potential. Instead, it often builds qualities such as problem-solving, discipline, and mental toughness. As a full-time college student studying aviation management, I have had to balance academic responsibilities while managing the realities of living with paralysis. That experience has strengthened my work ethic and taught me how to remain focused on long-term goals despite setbacks or limitations. My experiences have especially influenced the way I think about the aviation industry and the role I hope to play in it. Aviation is an industry centered around connecting people, but for many individuals with disabilities, traveling can still be stressful and inaccessible. Airports, airlines, and transportation systems do not always fully consider the needs of disabled passengers. Because I understand these challenges from personal experience, I believe I can bring a valuable perspective into aviation management. I know how important accessibility, communication, and respectful treatment are for passengers who may already feel vulnerable while traveling. In the future, I hope to use my experiences to positively impact the aviation industry by helping improve accessibility and customer service for all travelers. Whether through leadership, operations management, or policy development, I want to contribute to creating environments where disabled passengers feel respected, included, and supported. I believe my perspective can help organizations better understand the needs of people with disabilities and encourage more inclusive practices throughout the industry. Being part of the disabled community has also made me more empathetic toward others in general. It has taught me not to judge people based on appearances because many struggles are invisible. I have learned the importance of compassion, patience, and advocacy, and those lessons will continue to guide both my personal life and professional career. Rather than limiting my ambitions, my experiences with disability have motivated me to work harder, overcome obstacles, and pursue a career where I can make a meaningful difference for others.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Living with paralysis while being a full-time college student has shaped my understanding of mental health in ways that go far beyond stress or temporary hardship. It has taught me that mental health affects every part of a person’s life, including motivation, relationships, confidence, and the ability to imagine a future for yourself. There have been moments where isolation, frustration, and feeling misunderstood made everyday challenges feel heavier. At the same time, those experiences forced me to develop resilience, patience, and a deeper sense of empathy for people whose struggles are not always visible. My experiences have strongly influenced my goals. Instead of only focusing on success in a traditional sense, I value independence, stability, and making an impact despite obstacles. Being in college while managing physical limitations has shown me that perseverance matters as much as talent. It has motivated me to pursue goals in aviation management not only for personal achievement, but also to prove to myself and others that disability does not eliminate ambition or potential. Mental health experiences have also changed the way I approach relationships. I have learned the importance of surrounding myself with people who are supportive, understanding, and genuine. Challenges taught me that real relationships are built on patience, trust, and emotional support rather than convenience. They also made me more compassionate toward others because I understand how easy it is for people to hide what they are going through internally. Most importantly, these experiences changed my understanding of the world. I now see how often people are judged without anyone knowing the battles they face privately. It made me more aware of issues surrounding accessibility, inclusion, and mental health awareness. I have learned that strength is not always visible and that asking for help is not weakness. Overall, my experiences have shaped me into someone who values resilience, empathy, and determination, and they continue to influence the person I want to become.
