First Generation College, First Generation Immigrant Scholarship
My life taught me responsibility early. I come from a refugee background. When my family arrived in the United States, everything was different. The language. The culture. Even the little rules in school. None of it was familiar. My mom worked long hours, so I had to step in. School. Work. Babysitting my younger siblings. Keeping things running at home. Some days it felt like too much. But I kept going. Those experiences showed me what purpose really is. Life doesn’t wait for you to be ready. You have to act. I learned to manage my time, stay consistent, and stay calm when everything feels like it’s too much. Showing up matters more than waiting for someone to notice. Helping others became part of that purpose. I help younger students from immigrant families with English and school rules. I help parents understand systems they don’t know. It’s nothing official. I just remember what it felt like to be lost. I don’t want anyone else to feel that way. Now, my purpose is clear. It’s not just about me. It’s about my family, my community, and using what I’ve learned to make life a little easier for others. My past didn’t define me. But it gave me a reason to push forward, to build stability, and to help others do the same.
