For much of my childhood, mental health was something I experienced without having the words to describe it. I understood what it felt like when someone I loved was struggling, but I did not understand why. I understood hurt, confusion, anger, and absence long before I understood trauma, addiction, or mental health. As I have grown older, those experiences have shaped the way I understand other people, the relationships I value, and ultimately the career I have chosen to pursue. Growing up, my mother struggled with addiction. As a child, I saw her choices primarily through the way they affected me. I did not understand the experiences, trauma, or mental health struggles that could exist underneath addiction. I only knew that I was hurt, and for a long time I carried resentment because of it. It took years for that perspective to change. I joined the Army at eighteen and spent four years serving in the military. During that time, I met people from different backgrounds and learned that we can spend every day beside someone without fully understanding what they are carrying internally. After leaving the military, I eventually returned to school and earned my bachelor's degree in Human Services. That education finally gave me language for experiences I had lived with since childhood. Learning about trauma, addiction, mental health, and human behavior caused me to look at my mother differently. For the first time, I could separate understanding someone's behavior from excusing it. I could acknowledge that her choices had hurt me while also recognizing that she was a whole person with her own pain and experiences. That shift allowed me to forgive in a way I had not been able to before, and it changed our relationship. Today, I can recognize my mother's strength and resilience while still being honest about the impact addiction had on our family. That has become an important part of how I understand the world. People are rarely as simple as the worst decision they have made or the hardest period of their life. We can hold people accountable while still having compassion for what brought them to that point. My own experiences with anxiety have strengthened that understanding. I have learned how important it is to acknowledge difficult emotions instead of believing we should simply push through everything alone. Writing has become one of the ways I process my emotions. It allows me to slow down and put words to things I might otherwise keep inside. Through that process, I have realized how powerful it can be simply to admit that something is difficult. That is one reason destigmatizing mental health matters so much to me. When people believe struggling is something to be ashamed of, they may hide it until they are overwhelmed. Asking for help should not be viewed as weakness. Talking about anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, or any other mental health challenge should not change whether we view someone as capable, valuable, or deserving of compassion. These beliefs have also shaped my career goals. During my Human Services education, I completed an internship in child welfare and saw families navigating complicated situations involving trauma, relationships, resources, and mental health. That experience reminded me how easy it is to judge someone's life from the outside when we only see one piece of their story. This past spring, I graduated with my bachelor's degree in Human Services as a first-generation college student. I am now pursuing my Master of Social Work at George Fox University, with the goal of becoming a licensed clinical social worker. I am especially interested in mental health and healthcare social work because I want to work directly with individuals and families during some of the most difficult and uncertain periods of their lives. I want the people I eventually work with to know they do not have to present a perfect version of themselves before they deserve help. I want to create space for honest conversations about the things people are often afraid to say out loud. Sometimes the first step toward healing may simply be realizing that another person can hear your story without reducing you to it. When I look back at my childhood, I realize that mental health has shaped my life in ways I could not understand at the time. It affected my family, my relationship with my mother, and eventually my understanding of myself. Education helped me put words to those experiences, and understanding helped replace some of my resentment with compassion. Now I want to use that understanding for something meaningful. My goal is not to pretend that mental health struggles are easy or that compassion alone fixes them. My goal is to help create a world where people do not feel that they have to struggle quietly. If bringing difficult experiences into the light can make even one person feel less ashamed of asking for help, then those conversations are worth having. As a future social worker, I hope to spend my career helping make those conversations a little easier.

Later, I returned to school and pursued a bachelor's degree in Human Services. As I learned about trauma, addiction, mental health, and human behavior, I began looking at my childhood differently. I started to understand that my mother's addiction did not exist in isolation. I could recognize the experiences surrounding it and begin seeing her as a whole person rather than only as the person whose choices had hurt me. That did not erase what happened, but it changed our relationship. Understanding gave me room for forgiveness. Today, I can recognize my mom's strength and resilience in ways I could not when I was younger. I can appreciate the relationship we have now without pretending the past did not hurt. It has shaped one of my deepest beliefs about mental health: understanding someone's behavior does not mean ignoring its impact. It means recognizing that people are more complicated than the hardest moments of their lives. My Christian faith has also shaped the way I understand those experiences. My faith has taught me the importance of grace, compassion, forgiveness, and service. It has challenged me to look beyond judgment and consider what someone may be carrying that I cannot see. I do not believe faith means mental health struggles simply disappear if someone prays hard enough. Instead, I believe caring for people means being willing to walk alongside them, listen, and help them find the support they need. For me, faith and mental health care do not have to compete. Both can help someone find hope during a difficult season. My experiences have also changed the way I view my own mental health. I have experienced anxiety and learned how important it is to have healthy ways to process difficult emotions. Writing has been one of those outlets for me. It gives me a place to slow down and express things that can sometimes be difficult to say aloud. Learning to acknowledge my own emotions has made me more aware of how damaging it can be when people feel like they are supposed to handle everything alone. There should not be shame surrounding mental health or needing support. These experiences eventually began shaping my career aspirations. During my Human Services education, I completed an internship in child welfare, where I saw families experiencing incredibly complicated circumstances. That experience reinforced something my own life had already taught me. It is easy to look at someone's choices from the outside and decide what they should have done differently. It is much harder, and more important, to understand the trauma, relationships, resources, and mental health challenges surrounding those choices. I also learned that compassion does not mean removing accountability. Sometimes helping someone means supporting them while also allowing them to take responsibility for their choices. That balance matters to me because I have experienced both sides of it within my own family. People can cause real harm while they are struggling, and they can also be capable of healing, growth, and rebuilding relationships. I want to carry that understanding into my work with future clients. This past spring, I graduated with my bachelor's degree in Human Services as a first-generation college student. I am now pursuing my Master of Social Work at George Fox University with the goal of becoming a licensed clinical social worker. I am particularly interested in mental health and healthcare social work because I want to work directly with individuals and families during times when life feels uncertain, overwhelming, or painful. As a future social worker, I do not want people to feel they have to hide the parts of their lives they are ashamed of before they are worthy of help. I want to build relationships where people feel heard and respected while also being supported as they work toward change. I want to be someone who asks what happened in a person's life before assuming I understand why they behave the way they do. My family taught me how deeply mental health and addiction can affect relationships, but also that understanding and healing can transform them. When I think back on the child who could only understand her mother's addiction through the hurt it caused, I realize how much my perspective has changed. Education gave me language for experiences I once could not explain. Faith helped me make room for grace and forgiveness. My relationship with my mother taught me that understanding someone's pain does not erase your own, but it can change what you choose to do with it. I cannot change the experiences that first introduced mental health and addiction into my life, but I can decide what they mean for the life I build from them. I want to use what I have experienced, what I continue to learn, and the faith that guides me to become a social worker who sees the person beyond the struggle. Success in this career will not simply mean earning my degree or becoming licensed. It will mean sitting with someone during one of the hardest periods of their life and helping them believe that their story is not over, that they are still worthy of compassion, and that healing and change are possible.

When I think about serving my community, I do not think of one specific volunteer event or organization. Service has been a common thread throughout my adult life, even though the way I serve has changed over the years. At eighteen, I joined the United States Army. I spent four years serving in the military, and that experience taught me early in adulthood that being part of a community means being responsible for more than just yourself. It taught me how important it is to show up for other people, work alongside individuals from very different backgrounds, and contribute even when the work is difficult. After leaving the military, my desire to serve others began taking a different direction. I returned to school and eventually earned my bachelor's degree in Human Services. During that education, I completed an internship with Oregon's child welfare system. That experience gave me the opportunity to see community service from an entirely different perspective. I saw families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives and learned how complicated helping someone can actually be. Sometimes helping means connecting a family with resources. Sometimes it means listening without judgment. Other times, it means advocating for someone while still holding appropriate boundaries and recognizing their right to make decisions about their own life. Those experiences are a large part of what led me to continue my education. I am now pursuing my Master of Social Work at George Fox University. I eventually hope to become a licensed clinical social worker and continue working directly with individuals and families. I am especially interested in healthcare and mental health social work, although I am keeping an open mind as I gain experience in different areas of the profession. I have also learned that making a difference in a community does not always happen through a large organization or a major project. Some of the most meaningful forms of service happen between individual people. It can mean noticing when someone needs help, connecting them with a resource they did not know existed, advocating for someone who is struggling to advocate for themselves, or simply treating a person with dignity during a difficult time. My idea of service has grown with me. In the Army, it meant serving my country and supporting the people beside me. In human services and child welfare, it meant learning how to support children and families. Now, as an MSW student, it means developing the knowledge and skills I will need to make helping others my career. I do not expect my education to be the end of that commitment. I see it as preparation for the next stage of it. My goal is to build a career where service is not something I occasionally do, but something that remains at the center of the work I choose to do every day.

I once thought helping someone heal meant finding the right words. Through my education and experiences in the helping profession, I have learned that sometimes healing begins when we stop requiring words at all. My path did not begin with art therapy specifically. I earned my bachelor's degree in Human Services and am now pursuing my Master of Social Work at George Fox University. My goal is to eventually become a licensed clinical social worker and work directly with individuals and families, particularly those experiencing trauma, mental health challenges, or difficult life transitions. As I have moved further into my education, I have also become more interested in the different ways therapists can help people process experiences that may be difficult to explain through traditional conversation alone. One of the things I enjoyed during my undergraduate education was being introduced to different therapeutic theories and activities. I remember learning about Gestalt approaches and participating in activities that felt very different from simply sitting and talking about a problem. It made me think more deeply about how therapy can create opportunities for people to express things in ways they may not have expected. That experience helped spark my interest in therapeutic approaches that go beyond words, including art and other forms of creative expression. That interest has continued as I have entered my MSW program. I am still early in my graduate education, and I know I have many theories, modalities, and interventions left to learn. Rather than already having one specific approach decided, I want to remain open and continue building a toolbox that allows me to meet clients where they are. Art therapy is one of the areas I would like to continue exploring as I develop as a social worker and eventually pursue clinical licensure and additional training. What draws me most to art therapy is the idea that a person does not always have to explain exactly what happened to them in order to begin expressing how it affected them. Trauma can be complicated. Sometimes people do not have the words for what they experienced. Children may not yet have the vocabulary to describe their emotions, and even adults can struggle to put pain, fear, grief, or complicated memories into words. Creative expression can offer another way to communicate those experiences while giving the person more control over how they share them. In my future career, I hope to work with people as individuals rather than expecting every client to respond to the same therapeutic approach. For one person, healing may happen through conversation. For another, it may begin through drawing, creating, writing, movement, or another form of expression that feels safer and more natural. My education has taught me that helping people heal is not about having one perfect technique. It is about continuing to learn, listening to the person in front of you, and being willing to meet them where they are. I hope art therapy and creative therapeutic approaches can become part of how I do exactly that.

Instead of asking, "Why did she make those choices?" I began asking, "What happened to her?" That single shift taught me the importance of compassion, trauma-informed care, and treating the whole person rather than judging the symptoms they present. Those experiences led me to earn my bachelor's degree in Human Services, and this fall I will begin my Master of Social Work at George Fox University. My long-term goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, providing mental health services to individuals and families, especially in underserved rural communities where access to care is often limited. What motivates me is the belief that mental health care should never stop at treating a diagnosis. People deserve to be heard, understood, and treated with dignity. Too often, individuals facing mental illness or addiction encounter stigma instead of support. They are viewed as their worst decisions instead of as people carrying stories of pain, trauma, resilience, and hope. Throughout my career, I want to help create a mental health system that is more compassionate, accessible, and trauma-informed. I want to advocate for earlier intervention, strengthen connections between mental health and substance use treatment, and help individuals recognize that asking for help is a sign of courage rather than weakness. Every person deserves the opportunity to receive support before reaching a crisis point. My mother's journey taught me that recovery is possible. It also taught me that one person's compassion can change the trajectory of another person's life. As a future social worker, I hope to be that compassionate presence for individuals and families navigating some of their darkest moments. If I can help even one person feel seen, supported, and hopeful, I will know I have honored both my education and the experiences that led me to this profession.

One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that compassion begins when we stop asking, “What is wrong with this person?” and instead ask, “What happened to them?” That shift in perspective changed not only how I viewed my mother, but also how I wanted to live my own life. That realization inspired me to earn my bachelor’s degree in Human Services and to pursue a Master of Social Work at George Fox University this fall. My goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker so I can support individuals and families navigating trauma, addiction, and mental illness. I want to be the kind of professional who sees the whole person, not just the symptoms, diagnoses, or circumstances they present. Mental illness does not affect only the person experiencing it. This fall, I will continue my education by pursuing a Master of Social Work degree at George Fox University after being accepted into two MSW programs. I have also secured a practicum placement with Asante, bringing me one step closer to my goal of becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. While the journey was challenging, each obstacle strengthened my determination to succeed. One of the areas where I have excelled is academic perseverance. Despite the challenges of being a nontraditional student, I successfully completed my bachelor's degree in Human Services. Throughout my studies, I developed strong skills in research, academic writing, critical thinking, and community advocacy. I completed projects focused on mental health, suicide prevention, social services, and community outreach. These experiences strengthened my passion for helping individuals and families overcome barriers and access the support they need. My dedication to education has continued beyond my undergraduate degree. I was recently accepted into two Master of Social Work programs and chose to attend George Fox University. I have also secured a practicum placement with Asante before even beginning my graduate program. These accomplishments represent years of hard work, persistence, and a commitment to personal growth. My field of study is social work. After graduating with my Master of Social Work degree, my goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Personally, I hope to continue breaking generational barriers through education. Earning a bachelor's degree was a significant milestone as the first person in my family to do so. Pursuing a master's degree represents another step forward. More importantly, I hope my educational journey demonstrates to my children that higher education is attainable and valuable. They are growing up watching their mother attend college, complete assignments, pursue graduate school, and work toward a meaningful career. My hope is that education becomes an expectation rather than an exception for future generations of my family. I understand that meaningful change requires commitment, sacrifice, and persistence. I am willing to dedicate the time, effort, and energy necessary to achieve my goals because I know the impact they can have on others. Every class I complete, every practicum hour I earn, and every challenge I overcome brings me one step closer to serving the communities that inspired me to pursue social work in the first place. My "awkward" thing is that I don't seem to fit neatly into any one category. I'm a veteran, a mother, a graduate student, a writer, a gardener, and an aspiring social worker. Depending on the day, I might be discussing trauma-informed care for my Master of Social Work program, baking sourdough bread, helping my children with school, tending sheep on our property, or writing chapters of a dystopian novel. People often seem surprised by the combinations. When I tell someone I'm a veteran, they don't expect me to also be an author. When I mention that I write books, they don't expect me to be pursuing social work. When they learn I'm a social work student, they don't expect me to spend my free time gardening, raising animals, or obsessing over perfecting a loaf of sourdough bread. For a long time, I thought I was supposed to choose one identity and stick with it. It felt like everyone else had a straightforward answer to the question, "What do you do?" Meanwhile, my answer always seemed to require a paragraph. Over time, I've realized that being a little difficult to categorize is actually one of my greatest strengths. My experiences in the military taught me discipline and resilience. Motherhood taught me patience and adaptability. Writing taught me creativity and empathy by allowing me to see the world through different perspectives. My Human Services education taught me how to understand people, systems, and communities. Each part of my life contributes something valuable to the others. As I prepare to begin my Master of Social Work program at George Fox University, I have come to appreciate that the things that make us different are often the things that make us effective. My diverse experiences allow me to connect with people from different backgrounds and approach challenges from multiple perspectives. So if I have an "awkward" thing, it's that I don't fit into a single box. I am a collection of experiences that don't always seem like they belong together. Yet those experiences have shaped who I am and who I hope to become. I've learned that standing out isn't about being the loudest person in the room. Sometimes it's about embracing the unique combination of interests, experiences, and passions that make you who you are. In my case, that means being a veteran who writes novels, a mother pursuing graduate school, and a future social worker who still enjoys spending time with sheep and sourdough starter. It may be a little unusual, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
