My name is Natalie I am 30 years old and a single mother to a 12-year-old going on 21. Let me first say thank you for making scholarships like this and helping mothers because sometimes it can feel like we are alone in this world . I was a young mother a kid having a kid and trying to do the best I could for him. I myself am a child to young parents who didn’t even graduate high school and was trying to break that cycle. However, I didn’t meet up to all the expectations but I did finish high school. I got my associates from Houston community college but then began to work because I needed to support my son and couldn’t just go to school so I took a break. The break lasted longer than I would have liked, but I was just trying to survive. Besides needing money I also did not know what I wanted to do with my life. It took me a while to realize that I love baking and making people happy with food. Being from a Mexican background, I guess culinary is not the first thing that you think about in regards to a career, especially a pastry, chef! But I am glad that God put it in my head and I am now attending the culinary Institute of Lenotre. I want to become a pastry chef, and hopefully own a small business in the future. I am graduating in December of this year and currently working at a restaurant, which I am very blessed to be doing! I don’t have help from my family. My mom passed away when I was two years old and my dad has been incarcerated most of my life. My aunt raised me and did the best she could but we have to make the best out of our own future. I want to give my son a better life and hopefully inspire him to always keep going. it’s hard sometimes because I do work two jobs and having a child in itself is hard work but I try to balance it as best as I can and just remember that it will be worth it in the end. There are hard days, sleepless nights, long mornings, but we have to do what we can. I hope that you pick me to honor with the scholarship and I appreciate any help! Thank you
