Bio

Hi! Thanks for reading my profile. I'm proud to be a first-generation college student and the child of an immigrant mother from Laos. My Laotian heritage is a significant part of my identity and a source of immense pride and inspiration. I aim to be a trailblazer for Laotian Americans, breaking barriers and setting new precedents. I'm a rising freshman at Georgia Tech, majoring in Computer Science. Throughout high school, being one of the few Asian-American students exposed me to the realities of discrimination. These experiences have only strengthened my resolve to promote diversity and celebrate differences. I aim to combat discrimination and ensure that future generations do not face the same challenges. I am proud of my Laotian heritage and bilingual abilities in Laotian and English. From a young age, I've had a knack for creating things, particularly in coding games, graphic design, and architecture. I am particularly interested in astronomy and various branches of computer science, including artificial intelligence. I aspire to use my skills to drive innovations that create new opportunities for everyone, honoring my heritage by contributing positively to society. Outside of school, I enjoy developing video games, listening to music, cooking traditional Laotian dishes, and reading novels. I am currently building my bookshelf, seeking inspiration from others' creativity to fuel my own. By staying connected to my roots and embracing new ideas, I hope to inspire others in my community to pursue their dreams and make a difference in the world.

My fingers moved instinctively, without a thought. They move with ease and elegance across the keyboard, pressing each button in succession. After almost 6 years of utilizing my laptop, I have grown diligent in typing as my my fingers accessed the bright screen before me- opening my eyes to the vast open world known as the internet that had become home to my learning adventures. Ever since I received my first laptop at 10 years old, I have always had a knack for anything technological. I'd spend all my time on the internet watching videos on how to fix things and how to develop programs on the internet. Even in my household, my close family would come to me for tech support because I could always somehow solve it with my quick problem-solving skills. I find myself at the crossroads of two seemingly divergent worlds: the complex field of computer science and the limitless possibilities for positive change. I am motivated by a single goal: to use technology to spark a worldwide revolution of goodwill and creativity in this digital age, where individual lines of code have the power to completely transform societies and interactions between people. Fascinated by the endless applications of technology, I aspire to be a software engineer, solving challenges and enhancing lives through innovations like advanced applications and AI for social good. My goal in entering the field of software engineering is to use technology to make a noticeable difference in the world, not just to further my knowledge. One of my projects that exemplifies this philosophy is the creation of a mobile application to combat food insecurity in underprivileged communities. Through the use of geolocation technology in Atlanta and collaborations with community food banks, this app will link those in need with resources in the area, guaranteeing that fewer people go hungry in our communities. In addition, I have been planning an educational software suite that aims to transform how teachers instruct students and students learn, motivated by my experiences as a tutor and student. This platform will support a variety of learning styles and enable teachers to customize instruction by integrating interactive simulations, exercises, and adaptive learning algorithms. Ultimately, this will create a more engaging learning environment for students from all backgrounds. Furthermore, I am also working on a program to teach computer science to kids from my home country of Laos, realizing the transformative power of education and giving them opportunities and future skills. Using my passion, I hope to enable these kids to succeed in a world that is becoming more and more digital. My love of technology and commitment to utilizing it for social good make me the strongest applicant for this scholarship. My work on projects like educational software and fighting food insecurity with a mobile app illustrates my dedication towards coming up with practical solutions. This scholarship will help me advance academically and increase my capacity to create innovative technologies that promote a more equitable future.

When I went to the telephone in our one-bedroom house one day after school, I noticed that it was flashing a red light. My mother's voice was heard suddenly as I clicked PLAY. "Natalie!" she said with excitement. "How are you doing? Have you had anything to eat? When you can, give me a call back. My mother and I used to speak on the phone every day, which helped me stay connected during her numerous business travels. It was a lifeline that fostered connection despite physical distance; it was more than just communication. When I consider how technology has affected my life, one innovation in particular comes to mind: video calling. Our relationship was completely transformed by this invention, which turned lifeless sounds into engaging face-to-face conversations. No longer limited to words on a phone, I could see my mother’s smile and the sparkle in her eyes, and feel as if she was right next to me. Video calling not only bettered our connection but also broadened my understanding of how technology has impacted empathy and connection on a global scale. Video calling may bring families divided by oceans together, link students with mentors on different continents, and allow physicians to treat patients in remote communities in an increasingly connected world. It improves cross-cultural collaboration, expands knowledge access, and promotes the exchange of cultures. I've always found communication art to be fascinating, and I want to be a part of the generation that realizes its full potential. I aim to explore how emerging technologies like virtual reality and AI can amplify human connections and tackle global challenges. Witnessing the evolution from a simple telephone call to immersive video communication from my own eyes has deepened my belief in the transformative power of technology. With further innovations, we can intersect people from all locations on a more personable level. This inspiration fuels my aspirations to be at the helm of technological advancements that will define our future, driven by a commitment to harnessing technology for the betterment of humanity. As I answer a FaceTime call, I realize its transformative power in the way we connect with loved ones but also its ability to fundamentally alter our daily lives. From the clunky machine in my dining room to the sleek device in my hand, the journey of communication technology reflects a broader narrative of innovation and human progress.

As I stood in the concert band, my cheeks flushed with embarrassment as I played yet another incorrect note. Doubt clouded my mind, my chest grew tight, and it became hard to breathe. But an encouraging shout from the crowd pulled me out of my spiral. I looked up to see my mom with her brilliant smile, cheering me on. There was no time to cry about my mistakes—the tempo kept the whole band moving, with or without me. I took a deep breath and pressed on, grimacing as I struck my mallet on the keyboard again.  After the concert ended, I sat in the backseat of the car, wondering what the point of practicing was if I couldn’t play one piece right after two years. My parents tried to comfort me, but their words barely registered. This struggle extended beyond just playing in a concert band—it crept into my everyday life, affecting everything from presenting to the way I spoke. I was utterly anxious with every breath I took. They couldn’t understand my despair at feeling left behind, and I didn’t want them to. The relentless tempo of the concert band mirrored real life—nothing stops moving, and it’s up to you to keep pace. But in my case, I was spiraling into the confines of my own mind. As my dreams grew bigger, so did my anxiety.  After four long years, I looked at my 10th-grade self and realized I was not happy with who I had become. The person I saw wasn't me. It was a shell of my existence. My experience with my mental health had trapped me in my mind, ultimately becoming a cage that restricted my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. And before anyone else could help me, I had to want to start helping myself first. That night I looked at myself in the mirror was a turning point. It made me realize if I didn’t change, the tempo of life would leave me behind. Determined to overcome this, I used techniques from the band in my academic and personal life. I sought help from a school counselor, Annie, who introduced me to breathing exercise techniques, similar to the deep breaths I took to steady myself during band performances. I began breaking down my goals into smaller, manageable tasks, much like mastering a difficult piece by practicing one section at a time. This approach made challenges seem less daunting and allowed me to celebrate small victories. From the time I spent with Annie, I realized that mental health isn't something that can be solved like a math problem. It is complex, rooted, and never truly leaves you. I realized that my anxiety would never disappear, I just learned ways to navigate it. But being able to navigate the complexities of my mind made solving the labyrinth of my anxiousness a whole lot easier. After being in a cage for so long, I realized that my journey with relationships was as barren as a wasteland. I decided to try to become more open about my struggles with close friends and family. It wasn’t as easy as I thought and it came with trials and tribulations of its own kind. But in the end, not only did I realize that they cared for me to the point where they would support me even if they didn't understand, it taught me the importance of empathy. This openness extended to how I perceived others; I became more compassionate, realizing that everyone has their battles, often unseen. People on the internet make it seem like it's a bug on their shoulder they can flick off, but for most people it’s a heavy burden that latches onto your back, weighing you down with every step you take. As for me, I felt that heavy burden crush me for years of my life. But breaking free from my cage, I now have people who help make that burden lighter and make it just a little easier to breathe. Now, as I prepare for the final concert of my high school career and enter my first day of college, I close my eyes and remember the past. I see the anxious child who was too afraid to strike a chord and the chaos in her head as she tried to stop overthinking. When I open my eyes, I see the exact opposite: confidence and calm. The journey from that hesitant musician to who I am today has been challenging but transformative. With the lessons learned from both band and my experiences with mental health, I feel ready to face new challenges and make my mark on the world.

From a young age, I was inseparable from my mother. We’d go almost everywhere together, whether it was laughing at her jokes or visiting the homes of the elderly. As I accompanied her, trip by trip, she became my inspiration to do good in the world. No matter where she went, she always had a kind smile and went out of her way to help strangers and community members alike. It didn’t matter who you were; if you asked for help, she would offer a hand regardless of the situation. As I’ve grown, I’ve taken inspiration from her good deeds and spread kindness to everyone I meet, gradually creating a ripple effect of compassion and leaving the world a little better than I found it. I can only hope to live up to her legacy. To elaborate, throughout high school, I’ve taken the initiative to create community service projects in our area. Apart from my academic pursuits, I am deeply committed to community service. As the president of my school's community service club, I have spearheaded efforts to address community needs. These include planning food drives, volunteering at homeless shelters, and organizing instructional workshops for underprivileged areas. These experiences have instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility to use my abilities and resources to improve the lives of those around me. In addition to my community service, I work as a coach and mentor. As the Percussion Mallet leader of my band, I teach younger students music theory and technique, helping them develop their skills and passion for music. Similarly, as a Varsity tennis player, I coach aspiring athletes, emphasizing the importance of discipline and teamwork. I hope to continue these initiatives and mentorship activities in college by tutoring children at a local school, working with homeless shelters, and taking the initiative to give back to those who support the campus. My certainty about what career I want to pursue has fluctuated, but one constant has been my desire to make a positive impact on the world. This has led to my interest in Computer Science, as the world is increasingly reliant on technology. Technology, especially the growth of AI, is becoming a key part of our daily lives. I want to be at the forefront of this technological evolution, guiding society toward the most optimal use of technology. In the wrong hands, technology can be a deadly weapon, which is why I am passionate about cyber security. I aim to protect and secure our future through this field. My goal in entering the field of software engineering is to use technology to make a real, noticeable difference in the world, not just to advance my technical knowledge. One project I’m working on that embodies this philosophy is the creation of a mobile application to combat food insecurity in underserved communities. By using geolocation technology in Atlanta and collaborating with community food banks, this app will connect those in need with resources in their area, ensuring that no one goes hungry in our communities. My academic and professional goals are deeply connected to my commitment to community service and mentorship. Inspired by my mother’s example, I’ve dedicated myself to helping others and making a positive impact. Receiving the Sunshine Legall Scholarship would not only help me overcome financial barriers to achieving my academic goals, but it would also allow me to continue my mission of using technology and service to change the world. I'm appreciative of the chance to apply for this scholarship and excited about the chance to positively influence the world on a local and international level.
