Mark A. Jefferson Teaching Scholarship
My name is Nasir Wilson, and I’m currently pursuing a career in the HVAC trade. I was drawn to HVAC because it combines hands-on problem-solving with the opportunity to make a real impact on people’s daily lives. Whether it’s heating a home in winter or improving air quality in a building, HVAC professionals play a vital role in keeping communities safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient. I want to be part of that—someone who not only understands the systems but uses them to serve others with skill and integrity.
To master my trade, I’m committed to continuous learning and hands-on experience. I plan to complete a certified HVAC training program, earn my EPA certification, and stay current with energy-efficient technologies and smart systems. I believe in learning from experienced professionals through mentorship and apprenticeships, which will help me build the skills and confidence needed to excel in the field. I also plan to attend industry workshops and training sessions to stay up to date with evolving standards and innovations in HVAC technology. My goal is to become a technician who not only installs and repairs systems but also understands how to design and optimize them for long-term performance and sustainability.
But my goals go beyond personal success. I’m passionate about using my skills to give back to my community in Camden, New Jersey. I’ve seen how important reliable HVAC services are, especially for low-income families and seniors. I plan to offer affordable services and volunteer for local projects that improve living conditions—like renovating community centers, helping with emergency repairs, and supporting nonprofit housing initiatives. Everyone deserves a safe and comfortable home, and I want to be someone who helps make that possible.
In the future, I hope to start my own HVAC business that not only provides excellent service but also creates job opportunities for others. I want to mentor young people who may not see college as the right path and show them that the trades offer a stable, rewarding career. By investing in others, I can help build a stronger, more skilled workforce and contribute to the growth of my community. I also want my business to reflect values like respect, teamwork, and generosity—creating a workplace where people feel supported, empowered, and proud of the work they do.
This scholarship would be a huge help in reaching these goals. It would ease the financial burden of training and certification, allowing me to focus fully on learning and gaining experience. More importantly, it would support my mission to use the HVAC trade as a tool for service, leadership, and positive change. With your support, I can take the next step toward becoming a skilled HVAC professional who leads with purpose and gives back to the community that raised me.

Track to the Trades
From the moment I first picked up a tool and helped fix a broken pipe in my family’s home, I knew the trades were more than just a job they were a calling. The satisfaction of solving real world problems, working with my hands, and seeing the tangible results of my efforts inspired me to pursue a career in the trades. Today, I am committed to building a future in plumbing and HVAC, with personal goals that extend beyond technical mastery to leadership, community impact, and innovation. This scholarship represents a crucial step in helping me achieve those goals.
One of my primary aspirations is to become a highly skilled and certified tradesperson, specializing in plumbing and HVAC systems. I want to be known not just for doing the job, but for doing it with excellence, safety, and integrity. To reach this level, I need access to quality training, tools, and mentorship. The trades are constantly evolving with new technologies and regulations, and staying ahead requires continuous learning. This scholarship would ease the financial burden of tuition, certifications, and equipment, allowing me to focus fully on my education and hands-on experience.
Beyond technical skills, I aim to become a leader in the trades—someone who mentors others, advocates for the profession, and helps raise its profile in society. Too often, the trades are overlooked or undervalued, despite being essential to modern life. I want to change that narrative by showing young people, especially those from underserved communities, that the trades offer a viable, rewarding career path. With the support of this scholarship, I can participate in outreach programs, apprenticeships, and community workshops that promote vocational education and inspire the next generation of tradespeople.
Innovation is another key part of my vision. As the world faces growing environmental challenges, the trades have a unique opportunity to lead the way in sustainability. I’m passionate about learning and applying green technologies whether it’s installing energy-efficient HVAC systems, using eco-friendly plumbing materials, or designing smarter water conservation solutions. I want to be part of the movement that makes buildings more sustainable and helps reduce our carbon footprint. This scholarship would allow me to attend specialized training and industry conferences where I can learn about cutting-edge practices and bring those ideas back to my work.
Equally important to me is the impact I can make in my community. Tradespeople are often the backbone of local development, and I want to use my skills to give back whether it’s volunteering for housing projects, helping seniors with home repairs, or supporting disaster relief efforts. I believe that success isn’t just about personal achievement; it’s about lifting others up and contributing to something greater. With financial support from this scholarship, I can dedicate time and resources to community service without compromising my educational goals.
In the long term, I hope to start my own business, creating job opportunities and fostering a workplace culture built on respect, generosity, innovation, and teamwork the core values of G.R.I.T. These values resonate deeply with me. Generosity means sharing knowledge and resources to help others grow. Respect is treating every client, coworker, and apprentice with dignity. Innovation is staying curious and open to new ideas. Teamwork is recognizing that success is a collective effort. I strive to embody these principles every day, and this scholarship would empower me to build a career and eventually a company that reflects them.
Ultimately, my journey in the trades is about more than just fixing pipes or installing systems. It’s about building a life of purpose, service, and growth. It’s about using my skills to solve problems, support others, and create a better future. This scholarship would not only help me achieve my personal goals it would amplify my ability to make a meaningful impact in the industry and in my community. I am ready to work hard, learn continuously, and lead with heart. With your support, I can take the next step toward turning these aspirations into reality.
Slater Miller Memorial Scholarship
WinnerChoosing a career in the trades was a decision rooted in my family passion. From a young age, I was drawn to hands-on work fixing things, building projects, and understanding how systems functioned. The trades offered a clear path to develop these interests into a meaningful profession. Unlike many careers that require years of schooling before entering the workforce, the trades provide opportunities to learn while working, gaining real-world experience and earning a living at the same time. This blend of education and application appealed to me, especially as someone who values tangible results and the satisfaction of seeing a job well done.
Beyond the practical benefits, I was inspired by the impact tradespeople have on everyday life. Whether its ensuring homes are heated safely, buildings are structurally sound, or systems run efficiently, trades professionals play a vital role in keeping communities functioning. I wanted to be part of that, contributing to something essential, reliable, and respected. The sense of pride that comes from solving problems, helping others, and mastering a skill is deeply fulfilling. It’s a career that challenges me to grow, adapt, and continuously improve.
In addition to my professional goals, I care deeply about several social causes, particularly those related to environmental sustainability, education access, and community development. Working in the trades has made me more aware of the environmental impact of construction and energy use. I believe in promoting sustainable practices—whether it's installing energy-efficient systems, reducing waste on job sites, or advocating for green building standards. Climate change is a global issue, but tradespeople have the power to make a local difference through smarter design and responsible choices.
Education access is another cause close to my heart. I’ve seen firsthand how trade careers can open doors for people who might not thrive in traditional academic settings. Supporting vocational training programs, apprenticeships, and mentorship opportunities is essential to helping others find their path. I believe everyone deserves a chance to succeed, and the trades offer a viable, rewarding route for many. By encouraging young people to explore these options, we can build a stronger, more diverse workforce and empower individuals to take control of their futures.
Community development is also a major focus for me. Tradespeople are often at the heart of local projects—renovating schools, improving infrastructure, and supporting small businesses. I’m passionate about using my skills to give back, whether through volunteer work, participating in local initiatives, or helping neighbors with repairs. Strong communities are built on collaboration, and I see my role not just as a worker, but as a contributor to something larger than myself.
Ultimately, my career in the trades is more than a job—it’s a platform to make a difference. It allows me to combine technical expertise with social responsibility, and to align my work with the values I care about. Whether I’m installing a system that reduces energy consumption, mentoring a young apprentice, or volunteering on a community project, I know I’m part of a profession that matters. And that’s why I chose this path—not just for the skills or the stability, but for the opportunity to build a better future, one project at a time.
