Native Heritage Scholarship
I am from the Shinnecock Nation in New York, I am 23 years-old and Native American Women who is also a single mother to a one-year-old son. Currently, I attend an online school as well as work a part time job. So, getting awarded this scholarship will help me continue to get the education I am well deserved. A little background story about me is I have been working with children since I was 14 years-old. I started off as a summer camp counselor working for my local high school for about 4 years. As well as an after school program on my reservation helping school aged kids with homework for about 2 years. Eventually, I wanted to further my career in the childcare education field. I started working for daycare centers within my local community which is about 10 minutes from the reservation. The reservation I live on does have a pre-school but, at the time I applied they were not hiring. So, once they were hiring I applied to work as a teacher assistant and I got the job! While working for the pre-school I wanted to do more than be a teachers assistant I wanted to be a lead teacher in the classroom. I to be able to provide cultural education, as well as help with child development with the children who go to the pre-school. While working at the Shinnecock pre-school I got pregnant I decided to stay until I was 8 months. In this mist of being pregnant I decided to also resign from working as a teacher assistant on the Shinnecock reservation. This is because I want to dedicate my time to becoming the best Native American pre-school teacher. So, I can give the next generation of Native American children the best education possible. As well as expand the cultural curriculum so the children can understand where they come from as Shinnecock Native Americans. I want the children to know that they can do anything they set their minds to. As well as provide a safe, secure, and compassionate environment for the children as well as their caregivers. Becoming pregnant was a wake up call for me to continue to further my career in the field of childcare that I have been working in for 10 years. I am to graduate in December of 2027 with a associate degree in early childhood education. I cannot wait to see the future of education for Native American children.
