Bio

Hello there! My name is Nardos. I enjoy dancing, listening to music, drawing, playing volleyball, and hanging out with friends and family. I dream of becoming a family therapist once I graduate from college. When I was a child, I didn't have many friends other than my mom. Since she always believed communication was important, she always listened to everything I had to say. I want to lend an ear to those who need it most, as my mother did for me. When communicating, listening is just as essential as talking. Because of her and, most importantly, God, I have become the person I am today. In the long term, one of my goals is to start a non-profit organization in Ethiopia and spread across the globe. The organization will provide people in need with housing, food, money, jobs, education, and other opportunities. My goal is to help pick up those living on the streets and give them a better start in life. Everyone deserves a chance at a better life. I want to make a difference in the world and inspire people to look out for others and be the change they want to see in the world. I would also love to travel and explore various cultures. I am trying to learn Spanish on my own using the Duolingo app, and I also took ASL 1 during my sophomore year. I hope to learn about many different cultures and share mine with people. I cook other cultural foods by watching YouTube videos, and I even go to restaurants to try different cultural foods.

    Yan Scholarship
I am motivated to attend college and further my education because I understand that the only way I can reach where I want to go and accomplish my objectives is by better preparing myself with the knowledge I need. Even though I didn't have strong study habits when I was younger, I wasn't the type of child to stay after school to complete homework and then study; instead, I preferred to eat snacks and watch movies. This is not to suggest that I was constantly on it and that I always placed between 11 and 15th out of a class of, say, 30 youngsters. I would recall what I had heard in class and take notes to pass these quizzes. It was founded only on that. As time went on, I continued to study day in and day out, but the day I moved to this nation was when I was accepted into the sixth grade. Everything was different, even the learning atmosphere. I concluded that I would need to have the opportunity to be someone else and seize the possibility that was presented to me. Because I had poor study habits and the method I was receiving instruction was quite different, it was difficult for me to adjust. I suffered in middle school for a variety of reasons, but I took a better chance in high school, and I'm continuing to learn and develop to become a better student so I can keep going for my dream and please my mom, my family, and myself. In the end, it's all to help me have the influence I want to have on the world and to assist more people.
    Bold Listening Scholarship
I actively listen to those around me by my body facing towards them, we meet at an eye-level, and as well as making sure not to interrupt. Listening can mean many things but for me listening require more than hearing the sound of the voices but to paying attention to the words and feelings that come with them and having an appropriate reply meaning it has to be on-topic of what the other person is saying and an honest opinion on what they are saying. I think talking is a part of listening for me because it would be like talking to a wall without the person putting in an input. Sometimes there might be no need for a response but at some point in listening, you should also be giving. In general, listening isn't giving your ear to someone it is also about body language, emotion, and responses you put back out there.
    Bold Simple Pleasures Scholarship
Culinary arts give me an immense sense of pleasure. Cooking allows me to experiment with many types of ingredients and recipes. I enjoy learning about various types of food. It makes me feel like I'm appreciating different cultures and traveling around the world to gain a glimpse into each one. Moreover, cooking is a crucial life skill that is needed to stay healthy. I also enjoy showing others how to take care of themselves in the same way. Listening to music is another thing that gives me pleasure. I listen to a variety of music types, so there's no limit to my tastes in terms of genre. Music allows me to explore multiple genres and it is a way I can express my emotions. I feel even a simple walk around the neighborhood or looking out the window into the world to see how beautiful nature is and appreciate my surrounding is even enough to make my whole day. These are the simple things that give my life pleasure and make me happy.

First and foremost you have to know that you’re a human being who does and will make mistakes but that doesn’t mean you could just roam free without taking responsibility for your action and trying to be the best version of yourself. It’s good to keep an open mind about anything and that doesn’t mean you have to follow what is given to you but just listen as well as give your honest input. Don’t ever be scared to own up to your mistakes and be yourself. Always think about others perspective because the world doesn’t evolve around you. These things will keep a growth mindset because you need to be outside a bubble you create yourself that keeps you from your fullest and best potential. It’s not as easy as I have written it out and it’s not all the things you could possibly do because different methods word in different ways for everyone. So as long as you keep on searching the best way to be your best self you are on the right path to accomplishing a growth mindset.
    Bold Patience Matters Scholarship
Being patient is really important to me because without it I would be blinded by my impulse to do things and maybe sometimes having a fast reaction might be good and better or rushing things could be good but I think by having patience you should be able to see things way past than it presents itself which could lead to being a good problem solver. It’s keeps me going and smiling. I feel like it’s also make people feel safe around me because they don’t have to feel like I would get mad or annoyed and I like being resourceful to people. There’s a saying “Good things comes to those who wait” and it’s true because in my life I have always prayed for the things I want and it took time and work so my patience paid off because I didn’t try to rush it, I took it step by step. So it’s is really important to me for these reasons.
    AMPLIFY Immigrant Students Scholarship
My unique story of immigration is when I was 6 years old my mom left to come to the USA. She left me with Her uncle and his family to look after me until she built a stable life here for us for me to go there. It took about 5 years until the day came for me to reunite with my mom. Before that day came though I went through something so traumatic, I was mistreated by my mom's uncle's wife and her daughter as well as the wife's siblings. I went through physical and mental abuse. It caused me to be suicidal and I was always angry with myself but since then I have come as a person and that experience has made me so strong. But it also has caused me to be defensive around people and independent. When I came here I took a test for school and had to take several vaccines. After all that I was set and I went to school after missing about 3 days because I had to get the right documentation so since it was the 4th day of school when I started. Everyone seemed to already have found their group friends and I felt out of place because I didn't the language well and a lot of other factors. I even got made fun of by some kids for my accent which looking back those kids were in the same ESOL class. I sat alone at lunch. A lot of people were surprised that I knew English and understood it. A lot of time has passed now and I am looking forward to achieving my dreams and goals as well as using my experiences to inspire others. I hope to be the change I want to see in the world. I want to make the world a safe and better place. I wish to inspire others to be the better version of themselves. I want to achieve my dream of opening an organization to help those in need in many ways such as giving housing, the education they want, job opportunities, and other necessities they need. This scholarship will help me support my dreams as well as my mom's. It would be a really big help on my step towards achievement to my dreams of everything from going to college to working up to my goals of opening up the organization.
    "If You Believe..." Scholarship
When I was about 6 years old, my mom left to come to the USA for a better life for us so she has to leave to some family members so she left me to her uncle and his wife and their daughter since they were close family members and I grew up with their daughter who is 5 years older than me. Everything was normal and fine up until the moment my mom's foot left the country. Everything changed. Her uncle's wife mistreated me so much, I became practically a servent around the house from cleaning to going out to shop groceries alone, and more. She physically and mentally abused me. Her uncle was unaware of everything going on and he practically was like a father figure but he spent all day work so he never knew what went down and I was so scared to speak out because his wife siblings lived nearby and I was scared she would have taken all the anger out on me after he found out and I couldn't exactly tell my mom whenever she called either because she would always have her daughter listen in my conversations with my mom. I did get along with the daughter, it's kind of like we were sisters but it was a fake bond nevertheless toxic because I was belittled by her. I didn't cope very well with all this so I have suicidal thoughts and used to blame myself for all the situation and I used even beat myself up for it literally with things. I held on to my life and hoped for better days by praying whenever I went to church. After 5 years of going through all of that and more my mom finished up my process and I arrived at the USA. I told her very little parts of what went down and she was furious but I begged her not to say anything to her uncle because I didn't want to cause a tear in their family. I learned from all this experience that you must always keep fighting no matter the circumstance and all the odds against you always push through until you get to the results and place you want to be in. Inspiring others is really important because you could make a big impact in someone's life that could set them from happiness and success for life. Helping others is the most important thing to me in life because I want to change someone's life and make their dreams come true. I also want them to get the fair shot at life that they deserve so one day they can fulfil their dreams or even help others themselves.
    Second Chance Scholarship
The change is I want to make in my life is I want to be independent, a good listener, has more self-love and confidence. I have always struggled with the image of myself or the confidence I have in what I say and do. I have always felt like I wasn't enough no matter what I do so I always try to be someone who fits in an image of what the person wants me to be like but even then I felt as if no matter what I do I was a burden people and I wasn't enough. As time went on after many struggles I started to realize it's this voice in my head holding me down and I couldn't let it get to me so I decided to work on myself. It wasn't an easy process and it is still something that I am working on but looking back I have come so far and made so many improvements. The way I got some results was by building a close relationship with God which helped me realize that life isn't just learning then getting a job than just having a family then you're done. There's so much to live more to life than the eye meets. I also started to work out which didn't work out but that's okay because not everything is meant for everyone. The whole trick of making improvements in your life is stepping out of your comfort zone. You can't wait to feel like you want to do something, you just got to go for it and do it. It takes time and effort, you can't just snap your fingers and get to where you want so it's fine to take it one step out of time. I always tried to reassure myself of all this and talked myself into it so that way that negative voice that is holding me back doesn't get the chance. This scholarship will help me towards my goal of saving up money to go to college. I plan to pay it forward by becoming a therapist who is affordable so that everyone can get the help they need and after getting set in my career I plan to create an organization full of opportunities and safety for those in need and it will be a completely non-profit organization. I hope to make a difference in someone's life even it's 1 person.

Martin Luther King Jr. is someone I admire from history. The reason was that He fought what he believed to be right and for the rights and equality of colored people. No matter how dangerous it was he made sure he didn't back down until his last breathe. I strive to stand by what I believe to be right and fight for it until the end of my life because it would inspire generations to come and have an impact on someone even If it's just one person. He was courageous, devoted, passionate, and determined. He led a march and even gave the famous "I have a dream" speech in front of hundreds if not thousands of people. His speech changed the world forever and was one of the reasons segregations were over. His movement and approach to the issue were so admirable. It was brave of him to fight for his own and people like him rights. He led his fight in peaceful never led to a conflict which make him so wise. He was full of wisdom. He changed the world in more than one way. He was a symbol of hope and change that was to come in the future. He didn't just fight for colored people but he fought even for basic labor rights and civil rights. These are many of the reasons why Martin Luther King Jr. is someone I drive as well as someone I hope to be in the future because I want to impact people's lives as much as he did.
    Louise Speller Cooper Memorial Scholarship
At the age of 17 or 18, my mom became pregnant with me. As a result of being shocked, she fled her house without telling anyone. Then, she proceeded to live with her aunt, who mistreated her, and at that time, my dad refused to accept me. As a result, she had to put up with her aunt and stayed there until I was born. After she gave birth to me, she went back home to her family, who were fortunately understanding and forgiving. She finished high school but college wasn't in it for her. As a result, she worked multiple jobs to support me. Despite our difficulties, God led us to the United States, whereby at that time my mother has become head of the household. To this day, she continues to work non-stop to support everyone. I have learned from her that you can turn things around at any time and that you can be your own person quite independently. Her sacrifices all came so I would be able to have a better life. I hope to live out her dream so she can have a fulfilling life. To make her proud, I hope to be the first college graduate in the family. I want to give her the life she gave. She always made sure that I always felt enough and that I always had the best of everything. One day I hope to do the same for her and get her to retire so she can live her dream life where she travels and everything she ever needs and want I want to be able to provide for. My goal is to obtain a Master's Degree in Counseling to become a family therapist. As a child, my mother taught me that communication is key to everything. The way she saw it, that's how everything gets sorted out. Every time she talked to me, she made sure to listen to me. Always knew what to say at the right time. Someday, I would like to be able to give someone the same thing my mother gave me. As a child, I watched my mom donate clothes, food, or money every time she got a chance. When we lived in Ethiopia, we used to go out on holidays and give away clothes, money, or food. I've always admired her kindness and spirit of helping other people, so one day I hope to open my own organization where people who are in need can go for help and regain some of their lost lives. Helping people is important to me, as well as giving back to the community. In more ways than one, my relationship with my mother has influenced my decision. She has made me the person I am today, so I am driven to fulfill her dreams.
