Overcoming Adversity - Jack Terry Memorial Scholarship
Jack Terry’s story is inspiring because it shows how determination and perseverance can help someone overcome challenges and still make a positive impact on others. His story reminds me that adversity does not have to define a person in a negative way. Instead, difficult experiences can shape who we become and motivate us to grow stronger and help others. Stories like his encourage me to face my own challenges with strength and use those experiences to guide my future. One of the most difficult experiences I have faced in my life was the loss of my grandmother. She was someone who meant so much to me, and losing her deeply affected my life and my perspective. My grandmother was someone who always showed love and care to everyone around her. When she passed away, it was extremely painful for my family and me. It was one of the first times I truly understood how fragile and precious life is. Losing her made me realize how quickly things can change and how important it is to appreciate the people we love while we still have time with them. Her death taught me a very important lesson that has stayed with me ever since. I learned that it is important to tell the people in your life how much you love and appreciate them before it is too late. Because of this experience, I try to be more intentional about expressing my gratitude and love to my family and friends. I never want to miss the opportunity to tell someone how much they mean to me. Although losing my grandmother was incredibly difficult, it helped me grow emotionally and appreciate the importance of relationships, compassion, and support. This experience has also influenced my future career goals. I plan to pursue a degree in health science and biology so that I can become a diagnostic medical sonographer. Working in healthcare will allow me to help patients and families during important moments in their lives. Whether it is helping doctors diagnose medical conditions or allowing families to see their baby through ultrasound imaging, I want to be someone who can provide care and comfort to others. Through my education and future career, I hope to give back to society by helping people receive the medical support and answers they need. Inspired by my grandmother’s memory and stories of perseverance like Jack Terry’s, I want to use my experiences to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

My relationship with Jesus has played an important role in shaping my faith and the way I view my life and future. Through my faith, I have learned the importance of compassion, humility, and serving others. Jesus teaches us to love and care for those around us, and this has influenced the way I treat people and the goals I have for my future. My faith gives me strength during difficult times and reminds me to stay hopeful and trust that God has a plan for my life. Growing up with faith has helped guide many of the decisions I make. When I face challenges or uncertainty, I often turn to prayer and reflection for guidance. My relationship with Jesus reminds me to stay patient and trust that difficult moments can help me grow. It also encourages me to treat others with kindness and understanding, even when situations are stressful or complicated. These values have helped shape my character and the person I want to become. As I continue my educational journey, I plan to implement my faith by staying committed to values such as kindness, honesty, and hard work. College will bring new responsibilities and challenges, but my faith will help keep me grounded and focused on my goals. I want to approach my education with gratitude for the opportunities I have been given and work hard to make the most of them. My faith also connects closely with my passion for pursuing a career in healthcare. I hope to become a diagnostic medical sonographer, a career that allows me to help patients during important moments in their lives. Whether it is helping doctors diagnose health conditions or allowing families to see their baby for the first time, this career provides opportunities to bring comfort and care to others. I believe that serving others in healthcare is one way I can live out the values that Jesus teaches. Throughout college, I plan to continue growing spiritually by staying connected to my faith through prayer, reading scripture, and being involved in a church community. These practices will help remind me of my purpose and encourage me to stay focused on living a life that reflects my faith. Overall, my relationship with Jesus has shaped my values, my goals, and the way I hope to impact others. By carrying my faith with me throughout my education and career, I hope to make a positive difference in people’s lives while staying true to the principles that guide me.

Earning a college degree will change the path of my life by giving me opportunities that my family did not always have. Growing up, I saw how hard my parents worked to support our family and manage financial challenges. Those experiences helped me realize the importance of education and building a stable future. A college degree would allow me to pursue a career that I am passionate about while also creating more financial security for myself and my future family. It would represent hard work, perseverance, and the ability to build a different path for the next generation. For me personally, a college degree means independence and opportunity. It means being able to rely on my education and skills to build a successful career and contribute to my community. I want to pursue a degree in health science, focusing on biology, because I am interested in the way the human body works and how healthcare professionals help diagnose and treat patients. My goal is to become a diagnostic medical sonographer, also known as an ultrasound technician. This career allows me to combine my interest in science with my desire to help others during important moments in their healthcare journeys. I am especially passionate about healthcare because it gives me the chance to make a positive difference in people’s lives. Ultrasound technicians play an important role in helping doctors diagnose medical conditions and monitor patients. Whether it is helping expectant parents see their baby for the first time or assisting doctors in detecting health issues early, this career allows me to contribute to meaningful moments in people’s lives. To pursue my passion for healthcare, I have taken steps to become involved in opportunities that help me learn more about the medical field. I participate in HOSA, an organization that helps students explore healthcare careers and develop leadership skills. Through this involvement, I have been able to learn more about different healthcare professions and build confidence in my career goals. By earning a college degree in health science, I hope to create a stable and successful future for myself while also setting a positive example for future generations of my family. My education will not only change my life, but it will also show my future children that hard work, determination, and education can open the door to new opportunities. A college degree would represent the sacrifices my parents made to give me a better future and the commitment I have to making the most of those opportunities. I want my future family to grow up seeing the value of education and understanding that goals can be achieved through dedication and perseverance. It will also give me the ability to support my family and create more opportunities for them in the future. This degree will be a symbol of the goals I set for myself and the determination it took to achieve them.

Growing up, I realized that life is not as simple as I once thought it was. Not everything is handed to you, at least not for me. I grew up around friends who seemed to get everything they wanted and never had to worry about money or working for the things they had. As a child, I often felt confused about why my life looked different from theirs. I sometimes thought it was unfair and wondered why my family struggled more than others. When I came home from school, I would sometimes see my mom frustrated and stressed about paying bills. At the time, I did not fully understand what that meant. I assumed that every family had the same financial stability as my friends’ families. As I grew older, however, I started to understand the responsibilities and pressures that my parents were dealing with. I realized how hard they worked to provide for our family, even when things were difficult. Seeing my parents work through those challenges helped shape the person I am today. Their struggles motivated me to work hard in school and focus on building a better future for myself. I realized that if I wanted a different life financially, I needed to stay dedicated to my education and pursue a career that would allow me to be successful and stable. Because of this, I decided that I want to work in the healthcare field as a diagnostic medical sonographer. This career will allow me to help patients while also building a stable future for myself and my family. My parents have always encouraged me to work toward goals they did not have the opportunity to pursue themselves. Their support and sacrifices inspire me every day to keep pushing forward. By continuing my education and following my career goals, I hope to create a life where I can support my future family while also helping others through healthcare.

When I became cheer captain, our team faced a difficult season because we had coaches who were often disorganized and not very supportive. Many teammates felt frustrated and unmotivated, and it made practices challenging. Instead of feeling excited about cheer, some girls started to lose confidence and questioned whether the season would go well. As captain, I realized that even though I could not control everything happening around us, I could control the way I supported my team. I knew that stepping up as a leader would make a difference. One of the biggest challenges was keeping everyone motivated when practices felt unproductive. Sometimes our routines were not clearly explained, or practice time was not used effectively. This caused confusion and frustration for many teammates. Instead of letting the negativity spread, I tried to create a more positive environment. I encouraged my teammates to stay focused and reminded them why we all joined cheer in the first place. I also helped review routines with teammates after practice and answered questions when people were unsure about parts of the routine. Another important part of being a leader was listening to my teammates. Many girls came to me when they felt stressed or upset about the situation. I made sure they felt heard and supported. I reminded them that our team was stronger when we worked together and supported each other. By staying positive and encouraging teamwork, our team began to rebuild confidence even when things were difficult. I also worked hard to stay organized and prepared so I could set a good example. I made sure I knew the routines well and helped lead warm-ups and practice drills when needed. By showing responsibility and commitment, I hoped my teammates would feel motivated to keep pushing forward as well. Over time, our team began to improve not only in our routines but also in our attitude. We learned how to rely on each other and work as a team, even when circumstances were not perfect. This experience taught me that leadership is not just about being in charge—it is about supporting others, staying positive, and helping people through challenges. Becoming cheer captain during such a difficult season helped me grow as a leader and showed me the importance of resilience, teamwork, and determination. It also taught me how to stay calm under pressure and find solutions when problems arise. I will carry these leadership skills with me in future challenges, both in school and in my career.
