I grew up with several learning disabilities. I started going into resource class in 2nd grade and up until I graduated, I had an IEP. All my core support and resources teachers were wonderful. While I was getting older, I realized how much they do for us. They go into countless meetings, a bunch of paper work, figure out what accommodations are best for us, and more. I just loved how much they put in for us. Because I learn differently I was always put in easier classes and thought differently then others. My brain doesn’t fully mature until the age of 35. I had always been told that I act way younger than I am. And I have always been great with kids. I realized that my mind is not too far from them. I have a lot of creativity and imagination like younger kids and that’s why I can connect with them. All my core support teachers who have had to deal with us kids who aren’t as mature as we should be really do a great job. They inspired me to work with other kids. In elementary, in 5th grade, I was told by the special education teacher that she noticed I was great with working with others and a girl named Jenna, had down syndrome. She wanted me to look after her and be her buddy. That’s what I did. I helped her with her homework, made sure she had someone to eat with, made sure people didn’t bully her, But it was then when I realized I liked helping younger children or special education. I was also in the YMCA program all of elementary and when I got to my 4th grade, I started helping out taking care of the kindergarteners and the 1st graders. Each year, I would look after the younger ones, and they would look up to me. I have always had a way with kids but it’s the teachers who had to deal with kids like me who truly opened that up for me. I see the world differently and working with children is easier for me than others because I have a less developed brain than most people. I have my own methods of getting kids to do what they are supposed to do in a fun way. I can get kids to listen to me when they don’t listen to others. I can make it so that they are silent when needed but can also ask questions and feel comfortable with asking. That is why I want to become a teacher.
