Bio

As a dedicated Honor Roll student passionate about fostering connections and serving my community, I have honed exceptional communication skills through diverse experiences. Serving as the Editor-in-Chief of my school newspaper, volunteering with senior citizens, and tutoring war-affected Ukrainians in English have strengthened my ability to connect with people from different backgrounds. Additionally, my work as a support specialist and teacher's assistant has equipped me with valuable organizational and leadership skills. Despite facing challenges due to my hearing disability, I have persevered with determination, fueling my ambition to pursue a career in law, where I can advocate for those who need a voice. I never let my disability get in the way of my goals.

My Savta (grandmother) was one of the kindest women I had ever known. She showed her love through baking and cooking: making the tastiest culinary creations. Ever since I was little, she showcased nearly endless patience for my games. We lived 6,000 miles apart: with her residing in Tzaft, Israel, and me in New Jersey. Despite the distance, I knew she always had my back. Every birthday, she would spend hours crafting the perfect card, and the most creative gift. The last summer that we spent together was special to me. I had begged to sleep over at her house, just the three of us: her, my grandfather, and me! I didn't want my little brothers to intrude on my time with my grandma. It's one of my most cherished memories of her: we cooked, we baked, and she even let me in on her super secret recipe for "Ugat Shmarim" or yeast cake. We played card games, and read books together. We even drove out to buy plants- she had the greenest thumb. My grandma kept her house littered with potted plants. One thing you should know about me and my Savta is that we both are hard of hearing and have cochlear implants. One of the things that made my grandma so special to me was how she embraced her disability. When I was with her, I felt special and strong. We were in this together. She passed away suddenly later that year, the weekend of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We didn't see it coming, she had sudden internal bleeding. The last time I saw her was 6 months before that. I was devastated. For the next month, I cried every single day, because she was gone. There would be no more birthday cards or plants, no more card games or yeast cake. Summers in Israel would not be the same without her. The following summer was my Bat Mitzvah. My chest felt tight when I realized that my Savta would not be there. Little did I know that she prepared her very last birthday card for me way ahead of time. At my service, my aunt Daphna surprised me by reading the letter from my Savta. It was just like her to write me a special blessing ahead of time. It was a bittersweet day, filled with both grief and happiness. My grandma was a person who inspired others. She dedicated her life to building accessible structures for people in wheelchairs. She was smart, kind, and formidable. My grandmother could make everyone in the room stand up a little straighter with her presence. Today, I miss her so much. When I think of the kind of adult I want to be, I instantly think of the traits that my Savta embodied: courage, responsibility, kindness, patience, and dedication. I want to make a difference in the same way she did, through advocating for others. She left her mark on the world, trying to make it a better place. As her granddaughter, I hope to continue her legacy and make the world a better place.
