As a single Mexican American mother of five children, ranging from the ages of 9 to 18, my life is a constant balancing act of family, faith, work, and education. My oldest just started college—a proud milestone that reminds me of how far we’ve come—and my youngest is still in elementary school. Between them are three other incredible children, each with unique personalities and dreams. They are the reason I wake up every morning determined to push forward, no matter how difficult the road becomes. Pursuing my nursing degree is not just about changing my own life—it’s about breaking generational cycles and building a foundation of strength, faith, and opportunity for my family.
Education was not always viewed as an attainable goal in my family. Growing up, I often focused on surviving rather than dreaming. I want my children to know that they can achieve more—that through hard work and dedication, they can create the life they imagine. By returning to school, I am showing them firsthand that it’s never too late to follow your calling and that their mother refused to let circumstances define her future.
My passion for nursing stems from both personal experience and a deep desire to serve others. Throughout my life, I’ve been the caretaker—whether tending to sick kids in the middle of the night or comforting friends and family during hard times. I’ve seen how nurses can make a difference in a patient’s life not just through medical skill, but through compassion and strength in moments of crisis. I am especially drawn to critical care and anesthesia nursing, where knowledge, calmness, and precision can mean the difference between life and death. My long-term goal is to work as an intensive care nurse, eventually continue my education to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). This path will allow me to work at the highest levels of patient care, combining science and compassion to bring comfort and stability during the most critical times.
Balancing school, motherhood, work, and church has been a tremendous challenge, but I’ve learned to plan every day with purpose. Mornings begin early getting my younger kids to school, and heading to work. Evenings are filled with homework help, family dinners, and quiet study hours after my children have gone to bed. My older kids help care for their younger siblings, together we operate as a team.
Faith plays an essential role in our journey; our involvement in church gives us strength, community, and the reminder that perseverance and gratitude go hand in hand.
This scholarship would relieve a significant financial burden, allowing me to focus more on my studies and clinical training without worrying about how to cover expenses like tuition & books. It would also give me the ability to provide more stability at home while I continue working toward my degree. More than anything, this scholarship represents belief. Belief that parents like me can rise above adversity and build better futures for our families through education and hard work.
Becoming an intensive care nurse and eventually a nurse anesthetist is more than a career goal—it is a calling. It’s about giving back, breaking cycles of limitation, and showing my children that with faith, discipline, and perseverance, they can achieve anything. I want them to know that their mother never gave up, even when life felt overwhelming, and that through education, we can change not only our lives but the generations that follow.
Thank you for considering my application and for supporting single parents like me who are pursuing their dreams while raising the next generation to dream even bigger.
Community Health Ambassador Scholarship for Nursing Students
Life has taught me many lessons, but none greater than the importance of resilience, faith, and purpose. As a single parent of five children, my journey has been far from easy. After spending three years living in Mexico, I found myself having to return to the United States and start over from scratch—with no job, having to live with family, and no clear roadmap forward. What I did have was a fierce determination to give my children a better life and a belief that education would be the key to our future.
Returning was not just about relocating; it was about rebuilding. Every day since has been filled with challenges, from managing a household alone to working multiple jobs and trying to make ends meet. But through it all, one dream has stayed close to my heart: becoming a nurse.
My desire to become a nurse is deeply personal. I want to be in a position where I can care for others, bring comfort during their most difficult moments, and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. The medical field has always inspired me—not just because of its stability, but because of the compassion, strength, and skill that nurses bring to their communities. I want to be that source of strength for others, just as I’ve tried to be for my children.
Returning to school as an adult learner and single mother of five has required grit, discipline, and relentless hope. I study late at night after my children are asleep. I attend classes while managing doctor’s appointments, school drop-offs, and everything else that comes with parenting alone. But I continue to push forward because I know that achieving my goal of becoming a nurse will change the future for all six of us.
My greatest motivation is my children. I want them to see that no matter how difficult life becomes, it is always possible to rise above circumstances. I want them to know that they are not limited by their environment or their challenges. They are watching me rebuild my life, and I hope they learn that hard work and education can open doors that once seemed closed.
This scholarship would be a tremendous help in relieving some of the financial stress that comes with going back to school while raising a large family. More importantly, it would allow me to stay focused on my long-term goal: earning my nursing degree and becoming a role model not only for my children but also for others who are struggling and feel like giving up.
Thank you for considering my application. I am committed to turning my trials into triumphs and using my future nursing career to serve and uplift others. I may have had to start over, but I’m building a future that is stronger than anything I have ever known—and I am doing it not just for myself, but for the five amazing lives that depend on me.
