WinnerSince my freshman year, I have been involved in the Arroyo High School music program. This journey, which has sparked my passion and drive to pursue music, began when I picked up the trumpet as a complete beginner. I had literally no experience, but I was inspired by videos I had watched and was determined to learn.
By my sophomore year, I had become good enough for Mr. Massaro to entrust me with the role of Concert Band section leader. This role marked a turning point for me, as it showed me that I was capable of becoming a strong player, was being recognized for it, and now had a leadership role that pushed me to not only focus on my own improvement but also take responsibility for supporting and guiding others. It was during this time that I began to understand the importance of leadership from our trumpet section leader, and I worked to improve as a leader by implementing strategies to help the concert band students I was in charge of.
After that, and for the past two years, I have served as the high brass section leader, which has allowed me to contribute even more significantly to the program. I have worked closely with my trumpet and horn players to refine tone quality, improve balance, and develop stronger musicians overall. Through consistent effort (and sometimes yelling), I believe I have helped the high brass section grow immensely, which in turn has contributed to the overall excellence of Arroyo’s ensembles.
In addition to my contributions to our band’s high brass, I had the opportunity to perform as one of three lead trumpets for the Academy Drum and Bugle Corps last summer. This experience challenged me greatly, demanding precision, endurance, and excellence both physically and musically. Performing alongside talented musicians from across the country and learning from incredible instructors helped me grow as a musician and gave me a broader perspective on what it means to perform at an elite level. This experience translated back to Arroyo, where I was recognized as a highly proficient musical and visual performer. I was also asked by our coaches to write choreography for the brass section’s feature and frequently contributed ideas for additional choreography to enhance the complexity of our visual performance.
That said, I recognize that this past semester I have been somewhat lackadaisical in fully upholding my responsibilities as a section leader, particularly when it comes to maintaining discipline and structure within my section. Moving forward, however, I am committed to making a stronger effort to support my section and, through my continued love for this program, plan to help them improve over the summer so they are better prepared for the upcoming year.
I have been deeply inspired and changed by my experience in band and by Mr. Massaro, and I plan to pursue a degree in music education at California State University, Northridge. My goal is to carry forward the same passion, dedication, and commitment to excellence to young music students as a high school band director. Through teaching, I hope to give students the same opportunities for growth and inspiration that I have received.
