One of the biggest obstacles I’ve faced in pursuit of higher education hasn’t been financial or academic—it’s been internal. My greatest challenge has been overcoming self-doubt and the fear of not being enough. When I first started college, I felt like I had to constantly prove myself—to look confident, act like I had everything figured out, and never show uncertainty. On the outside, I carried myself with composure, but inside, I was battling thoughts of whether I truly belonged in the spaces I was walking into.
College can be overwhelming, especially when you come from a background where you’ve had to rely on your own drive to make things happen. I always knew I wanted to do something big with my life—to build something that would outlast me—but the path toward that kind of purpose can feel lonely at times. I had moments where I questioned if I was truly capable of achieving what I envisioned: starting an aviation company, traveling the world, and inspiring others to expand their minds and possibilities. There were days when I would sit in my dorm room wondering if I was chasing a dream too big to reach.
What helped me begin to overcome that obstacle was learning to shift my mindset—and that process started with a few key people in my life who saw my potential even when I couldn’t. One of those people was a mentor I met through my aviation program. He had a calm but commanding presence, and one day after class, he told me something that stuck with me: “You don’t need permission to be great. You just need consistency.” That sentence flipped a switch in my mind. It made me realize that confidence doesn’t come from waiting for others to validate you—it’s something you build through daily action and belief in your own path.
Another source of strength came from my close friends and family, who reminded me that setbacks and doubt are natural parts of growth. My mother, in particular, taught me that strength isn’t about always feeling strong—it’s about showing up even when you don’t. Her words, and the examples she set, helped me reconnect with my purpose. I began journaling, meditating, and focusing on alignment—finding peace between my mind, body, and soul. That inner work helped me regain clarity and confidence in my goals.
Now, instead of seeing doubt as a weakness, I see it as part of my process. It keeps me grounded and constantly striving to improve. The same self-awareness that once held me back is now something I use to fuel growth and resilience. I’ve learned that higher education isn’t just about earning a degree—it’s about developing the mindset and discipline to keep evolving, even when things get uncomfortable.
This obstacle taught me how to believe in myself on a deeper level. It reminded me that greatness starts within, long before it’s recognized by others. And as I continue to pursue my aviation career and build toward my vision of merging flight, wellness, and human connection, I carry that lesson with me every day: that confidence isn’t something you find—it’s something you create.
Hector L. Villarreal Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, I have always been fascinated by the boundless sky. The idea that something so vast and open could also represent discipline, precision, and purpose drew me to aviation early on. Now, as a sophomore aviation major at Hampton University, I see aviation as far more than a career path—it’s a gateway to impact, connection, and global transformation. I feel deeply called to this industry because it combines my passions for exploration, leadership, and human understanding. Through aviation, I can bridge cultures, uplift others, and create experiences that expand people’s sense of what’s possible.
My ultimate goal is to build an aviation company that goes beyond transporting people from one destination to another. I envision an enterprise that merges aviation, wellness, and global discovery—offering flight training, luxury concierge services, study abroad experiences, and wellness retreats around the world. I want to create something that mirrors the spirit of exploration found in cruise lines like Carnival, but in the air. I see aviation as the core vessel through which people can travel, heal, and reconnect with themselves and the world.
What draws me most to aviation is its balance of technical skill and human psychology. Planes don’t just fly—they require trust, teamwork, and emotional intelligence to operate safely and efficiently. As someone interested in behavioral sciences, I aim to integrate human factors and emotional awareness into aviation spaces. I believe that understanding human behavior—how people react under pressure, how they communicate, and how they connect—is just as important as understanding aerodynamics or navigation. My long-term mission is to use this knowledge to help shape safer, more empathetic, and more innovative aviation environments.
This scholarship would not only relieve financial pressure but also allow me to invest more deeply in the experiences that will shape me into the leader I aspire to become. It would help me pursue advanced flight training, attend aviation conferences, and engage in study abroad programs that expand my global perspective. Every hour in the cockpit and every connection I make brings me one step closer to realizing my dream of creating a company that blends aviation with wellness and personal growth.
Beyond the technical skills, I want to redefine what aviation represents for young people—especially those who look like me. Representation matters, and I want to show young Black men and women that aviation is not just an industry for pilots and engineers, but a field where we can lead, innovate, and create new paths. I see myself as part of a new generation of aviators who not only navigate aircraft but also navigate the human spirit.
Receiving this scholarship would affirm my commitment to excellence and service. It would empower me to continue breaking barriers, building my leadership skills, and pursuing my dream of using aviation as a tool for empowerment and connection. For me, the sky isn’t the limit—it’s the beginning.
Mark A. Jefferson Teaching Scholarship
My name is Naim Muhammed, and I have always been driven by a desire to inspire, uplift, and educate others. From a young age, I recognized the importance of guidance, mentorship, and understanding, especially for young Black men in my community who often face unique challenges and pressures. These experiences have shaped my goal of becoming a life coach, motivational speaker, and educator, focusing on fostering emotional intelligence, self-respect, and personal growth. I want to use my platform to create opportunities for others to realize their full potential and embrace their worth.
My vision as an educator goes beyond traditional academic instruction. I am passionate about teaching young Black men how to navigate life with confidence, resilience, and self-awareness. I want to help them develop emotional intelligence, which I believe is one of the most powerful tools for success in any area of life. By learning how to manage their emotions, communicate effectively, and build healthy relationships, they can break cycles of self-doubt and negative behavior and step into their purpose with clarity and determination.
I also aim to promote the concept of Black excellence in everything I do. I want to inspire young men to recognize the value of their culture, history, and identity while pushing them to aim higher than society might expect. This is not just about professional success; it’s about developing integrity, self-discipline, and a mindset that embraces growth and responsibility. I want my students and mentees to walk away not only with skills but with a belief in themselves and the confidence to create meaningful change in their own lives.
Through motivational speaking and life coaching, I hope to reach a wider audience and provide guidance to those who may not have strong support systems at home or in their communities. I want to share my experiences, lessons learned, and strategies for overcoming challenges, showing them that setbacks do not define their future. My goal is to create programs and workshops that empower young Black men to respect themselves, make positive choices, and become leaders in their communities.
Ultimately, my career as an educator, life coach, and motivational speaker is about more than teaching—it’s about transforming lives. I want to inspire a generation of young Black men to recognize their potential, embrace their worth, and contribute positively to the world. By equipping them with the knowledge, mindset, and confidence they need, I hope to leave a lasting impact that extends far beyond the classroom or the stage.
Craig Huffman Memorial Scholarship
My name is Naim Muhammed, and I am currently a second-year Aviation Management major with a deep passion for flight and a drive to excel both academically and professionally. Growing up, I was always fascinated by airplanes—the way they move through the sky, the technology behind them, and the freedom they represent. That fascination grew into a genuine interest in aviation as I learned more about the industry, from flight operations to management and safety protocols. I realized that aviation is not just about flying; it’s about connecting people, cultures, and opportunities, and that inspired me to pursue a career where I could contribute to this dynamic field.
My interest in aviation isn’t just fueled by curiosity—it’s also guided by a desire to build something meaningful. I aspire to create my own aviation company that combines luxury flight services with wellness programs, educational opportunities, and global travel experiences. I see aviation as a platform where I can innovate, inspire, and offer people unique experiences that go beyond traditional air travel. This vision motivates me to dedicate myself to mastering the skills, knowledge, and discipline that the aviation industry demands.
I believe I exemplify leadership qualities through both my academic and community experiences. One of the most significant ways I’ve demonstrated leadership is through my mentorship program with the IAMKING FOUNDATION. Since 8th grade, I have worked with young Black males in my community who struggle with behavior challenges, academic setbacks, and lack of guidance. Mentoring these young men has taught me how to lead by example, communicate effectively, and motivate others to recognize their own potential. I take pride in creating an environment where they feel supported, heard, and encouraged to make positive changes in their lives.
In addition to mentoring, I demonstrate leadership by taking initiative in academic projects and extracurricular activities. I strive to bring people together, organize efforts, and ensure that goals are achieved efficiently and effectively. I believe leadership is not just about directing others but about inspiring them, being consistent in your actions, and maintaining integrity even when faced with challenges. These are qualities I practice daily, and they align perfectly with my aspirations in aviation, where teamwork, decision-making, and responsibility are critical.
Ultimately, my passion for aviation and my commitment to leadership are intertwined. I aim to excel in my studies, pursue entrepreneurial opportunities in aviation, and continue making a positive impact in my community. My experiences have taught me the importance of vision, dedication, and resilience, and I am ready to carry those qualities forward as I grow in the aviation industry.

I Can and I Will Scholarship
There was a time when my mental health was at its lowest point, and it felt like the weight of the world was pressing down on me. I struggled with anxiety, self-doubt, and feelings of unworthiness that made even small tasks feel overwhelming. During this period, I found it hard to connect with others or see a clear path for my future. Relationships became strained, and I often questioned my purpose. I felt lost and unsure of myself, which made it difficult to pursue my goals with any real confidence.
It was during this dark period that I discovered spirituality and a connection with God. That discovery didn’t magically solve all my problems, but it gave me a foundation and a sense of purpose I had been missing. Through prayer, reflection, and learning to trust in something greater than myself, I began to see that I am worthy, capable, and deserving of success and happiness. That shift in perspective transformed the way I view myself and my life. I started to approach challenges not as insurmountable obstacles, but as opportunities to grow and strengthen my character.
This experience with mental health has influenced my beliefs in a profound way. I now believe that self-worth isn’t something we earn through external achievements—it’s something we recognize within ourselves, and spirituality taught me how to see that in me. It also showed me the importance of resilience, patience, and trust in the process of life. These beliefs have become the lens through which I approach everything, from my relationships to my career aspirations.
In my relationships, this transformation has made me more compassionate, understanding, and present. I am more aware of how others may struggle in ways similar to my own experiences, and I am more willing to offer support without judgment. I have learned to set healthier boundaries and cultivate relationships that are rooted in respect and mutual growth.
In terms of my career, my mental health journey has aligned me with my goals in ways I never expected. I now approach my ambitions in aviation with clarity, determination, and a deep sense of purpose. Knowing my worth and trusting in my abilities has pushed me to aim higher and pursue opportunities I might have once thought were out of reach. My spirituality has not only helped me heal, but it has given me the discipline, focus, and alignment to chase my dreams with confidence.
Ultimately, my mental health journey has shaped me into someone who values self-awareness, growth, and faith. It has strengthened my belief in my potential, enhanced my relationships, and driven me to pursue a career that reflects both my passions and my purpose.

since I was young, I’ve been fascinated by the idea of flight. Watching planes take off and land sparked a sense of curiosity and wonder in me that never went away. There’s something about the combination of precision, technology, and the freedom of the skies that pulls me in. That curiosity eventually turned into a passion, and now pursuing a career in aviation feels like the most natural path for me. I want to be part of an industry that doesn’t just move people and goods but also connects cultures, ideas, and opportunities. Aviation represents possibility, and I want to be someone who contributes to that in a meaningful way.
Beyond the technical aspects, I’m drawn to aviation because of the challenge it presents. I thrive in environments where focus, discipline, and continuous learning are essential, and aviation is exactly that. Every flight, every aircraft, and every scenario offers a new challenge. I like the idea of being part of a profession where excellence isn’t optional—it’s necessary. That drive for precision and mastery motivates me to push myself, learn faster, and grow stronger both professionally and personally. I know that being successful in aviation requires not only technical skills but also the ability to adapt, think critically under pressure, and constantly refine your knowledge. Those are skills I enjoy developing, and aviation gives me the perfect opportunity to do that every single day.
My passion also extends beyond just flying planes or understanding aircraft; it’s about creating experiences and opportunities for others. I dream of starting my own aviation company one day, offering services that go beyond traditional air travel. I want to make aviation accessible while combining it with unique programs, like wellness retreats and international travel experiences, that allow people to see the world differently. Aviation, to me, isn’t just a career—it’s a platform to innovate, inspire, and make a lasting impact on the lives of others.
Finally, aviation represents a chance to challenge myself, break barriers, and achieve something meaningful. Growing up, I faced my share of obstacles, and I learned to appreciate hard work, resilience, and the importance of taking advantage of every opportunity. I want to use that mindset in a field that demands excellence, creativity, and persistence. A career in aviation allows me to turn my childhood fascination into a lifelong pursuit, while also creating opportunities for myself and others to soar—literally and figuratively. That’s why I am passionate about aviation, and why I am committed to dedicating my energy, focus, and ambition to this industry.

My name is Naim Muhammed, and I am a second-year Aviation Management major at Hampton University. My ultimate goal is to establish my own aviation charter company that combines flight training, wellness retreats, and global travel experiences. I want to create an aviation brand that opens doors for others—especially young Black students—to explore the world and see themselves as part of the aviation industry. For me, aviation represents freedom, leadership, and the ability to connect people across cultures.
Being Black means strength, creativity, and resilience. It means carrying the legacy of people who built, innovated, and persevered even when the world underestimated them. I see that same spirit in myself and in the community around me at my HBCU. Hampton has given me a space where I can grow academically and personally while being surrounded by people who look like me and share a similar drive for greatness.
I chose to attend an HBCU because I wanted more than an education—I wanted belonging, pride, and purpose. Hampton has provided all three. It has taught me that success is not just about personal gain, but about lifting others as you rise. Through my career in aviation, I plan to honor that lesson by building opportunities for future generations and showing that Black excellence has no limits—not even the sky.

My name is Naim Muhammed, and I am a second-year Aviation Management major with a drive for excellence and a vision that extends far beyond the classroom. My goal is to establish my own aviation charter company—one that blends luxury, wellness, and exploration to redefine the way people experience flight. I see aviation not just as transportation, but as a platform for connection, growth, and global opportunity. Every step I take in my education brings me closer to turning that vision into reality.
Growing up in Kansas City, Missouri, life wasn’t always easy. I faced challenges that taught me resilience, self-reliance, and the value of perseverance. There were times when opportunities seemed limited and resources were scarce, but those very conditions sparked a deeper hunger within me—to rise above, to build something meaningful, and to create a future where I could open doors for others the way I wish they had been opened for me. My background shaped my determination to make something out of every opportunity I receive and to never take growth for granted.
Coming to college has been one of the biggest turning points in my life. It gave me the space to expand my knowledge beyond where I’m from and to surround myself with people who share my ambition to make an impact. Through my courses, I’ve been learning about the business, safety, and logistical sides of aviation—each of which fuels my long-term goal of entrepreneurship in this field. I’ve also begun exploring how aviation can be integrated with other disciplines, such as behavioral science and wellness, to create travel experiences that prioritize both physical and mental well-being. This combination reflects not just what I study, but who I am: someone who values purpose, innovation, and people.
However, pursuing higher education comes with financial challenges. Despite my work ethic and focus, the cost of tuition, materials, and flight training can be overwhelming. That’s why this scholarship would mean so much to me—it would not only help me complete my degree, but also give me the stability and peace of mind to stay fully committed to my academic and professional goals. Every dollar invested in my education is an investment in a future aviation leader determined to give back to his community.
I don’t just see this scholarship as financial support; I see it as a partnership in potential. It represents belief—belief in students like me who come from humble beginnings but dream on a global scale. It would allow me to keep pushing forward, continue developing my leadership skills, and ultimately build the foundation for my aviation company—one that will create jobs, empower young people, and inspire others from places like Kansas City to dream beyond their surroundings.
In everything I do, I carry my upbringing, my ambition, and my gratitude. This scholarship would not only help me finish strong, but also bring me closer to fulfilling my purpose: to fly higher, lift others, and leave a lasting mark on the world through aviation.
Undergraduate Minorities in STEM Scholarship
My ultimate career goal is to start my own private aviation charter company. I’ve always been fascinated by aviation, not just the mechanics of flight, but the freedom, precision, and responsibility it represents. As I’ve advanced in my education and gained more exposure to the industry, I’ve come to see private aviation as more than just a luxury service. It’s a space filled with opportunity for innovation, customer-focused experiences, and leadership.
Starting my own charter company is not just about flying planes, it’s about building something that reflects excellence, efficiency, and trust. I want to create a company that offers clients more than just transportation. I aim to deliver a premium, personalized experience that redefines convenience and reliability in the private air travel industry.
Beyond the business side, I’m passionate about creating career pathways for others in aviation, especially for young people of color who rarely see themselves represented in this field. Through my company, I plan to create internships, mentorship programs, and career development initiatives that open doors for the next generation of aviation professionals.
To reach this goal, I’m focused on completing my degree, gaining hands-on experience in aviation operations and business management, and building a strong professional network. With determination, discipline, and vision, I’m confident I can turn this dream into a reality.
Starting my own aviation charter company isn’t just a career goal, it’s a mission to lead, inspire, and elevate both my industry and my community.
Private (PVT) Henry Walker Minority Scholarship
If given the opportunity, I will use the completion of my degree to be a symbol of possibility and progress for younger Black men in my community. Too often, we grow up without seeing people who look like us achieve academic and professional success. That absence of representation plants doubt—it makes it harder to imagine success as something within reach. My goal is to challenge and change that narrative by giving my community a face they can relate to, and a story they can believe in.
I want young Black boys to look at me and see that success is not just something reserved for others. I want them to know that someone who walks like them, talks like them, and comes from the same streets they do, was able to push through the challenges, stay committed, and earn a college degree. Not because it was easy, but because it was necessary—not just for personal advancement, but to uplift the community that helped shape who I am.
Growing up, I saw firsthand how a lack of guidance and opportunity can lead even the brightest individuals down a destructive path. Many of my peers had dreams, intelligence, and potential—but they didn’t have the resources, the mentorship, or even the belief that their dreams were attainable. I’ve been blessed to have made it this far, but I know I didn’t do it alone. I had encouragement, role models, and people who believed in me when I doubted myself. I want to be that person for someone else.
With the support of this scholarship, I would not only complete my degree—I would use it as a tool to reach back and lift others up. I plan to create mentorship programs that connect college students and graduates with high school students from underserved areas. I want to speak at local schools, organize workshops, and work with community leaders to build a stronger bridge between education and empowerment. I believe real change starts with connection—when young people see someone they relate to making it, it lights a fire inside them. That fire can lead to ambition, and ambition can lead to action.
This is important to me because I understand how valuable that spark can be. I’ve lived through the doubts and the setbacks, and I know how powerful it is to finally realize that your dreams are valid. My success is not just mine—it belongs to the people who helped me get here, and it will serve as a roadmap for others to follow.
In short, I don’t just want to earn a degree—I want to be a source of pride, hope, and proof that greatness is possible with the right amount of drive and support. If given the opportunity, I will use every ounce of it to pour back into my community and be the example that someone else needs to see.
